Sony needs to get their act together and officially release this concert on DVD and Blu-Ray, and a special edition release of “Captured” would be nice too! The Rolie/Schon/Perry/Smith/Valory line up was the best in Journey’s history.
The tempo is faster than the studio version , but it still kicks ass. For fans like myself and most of you on this page of the original era of Journey we can only blame the radio stations and fans back then for not buying enough of their albums. That is what led to Steve Perry joining.
Rocky B Yes but what an incredible addition Steve was! To think he almost quit music. Thank God for Herbie Herbert bringing him into the fold. I am still amazed & appreciative of the vocal ability of Steve & Greg plus the artistry of the whole band. It might sound melodramatic, but my life is better for their music. I am forever grateful to all the artists who have been & are in Journey.
Musicians make Music by passion in the style they want to. It's a matter of integrity. Success will come if they persist. Rush is still in the media players, while Journey is in the shelf. If they want to go for quick big sales, they do business by music. Journey part II was all about business, not bad music, but commercial, fast food music, and that was a shame, because people consuming fast food music quickly jump to the next sweet candy, so the higher they raise, the higher they fall.
Yeah it's fast but it doesn't lose its atmospheric quality. In 75/76, for example, they played it at the album version speed. By 1980, they had to fit more songs on the setlist. Still can see how awesome Schon and Rolie were together. Steve Smith and Ross Valory kicking some serious ass.

Supposedly this is last time the band performed this song live. Was added to setlist just for this one last time out of respect to Gregg Rolie. Journey is missing Gregg Rolie, which is such a key player in this amazing band! I wish Gregg would re-join the band, alongside Jonathan Cain. Cain can play a mean guitar, too (as well as keyboards).
This song ranks in the top two live songs ever, in my opinion, up there with Freebird by Lynyrd Skynyrd. Can't think of a better, more building solo than the one Schon tastefully launches into at 3:40, continues in a finger frenzy up to and through 4:37, only to build higher into the killer finish at 4:49 and denouement at 5:09. Just wish they would have filmed more of his fingers flying across the frets - LOL!

THANKS SO MUCH TO EVERLOR FOR THIS QUALITY VERSION OF (OF A LIFETIME) MY EARS ARE SO SPOILED, I LITERALLY CAN'T LISTEN TO 80% OF KILLER BAND GEMS FROM THE SAME ERA. There first album is there best hands down in my opinion. Then there second and third are incrdible as well. Sucks they werent doing as good making songs like this. And had to resort to making songs like loving touching squeezing.
As one trained in hypnotherapy, this is an ideal song, particularly its golden, repetitive rhythm and beat-the perfect song for inducing...self hypnosis or a trance state.
Diostillrocks This was in the set lists through out the tour in and out with Kohutek. In Japan, I believe both this and Kohutek were played at all of the shows for use in the video
if you play this song and Manfred Mann's Visionary Mountains back to back it will be hard to tell what song is playing, they are so similar...but, Journey were first...
I like when Perry walks off stage! He turned a Great Progressive Rock Band into a Pop top 40 band. Seen Journey live twice pre Perry era Fantastic. Both times with Ansley Dunbar on drums I am a big Steve smith fan though. Greggs voice is Vintage. What a great voice. His vocals are trademark Santana. To Bad they went the money rout. The commercial sound of Money.
If they do get inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame I hope Gregg will be onstage with them and that they do acknowledge Dunbar. Btw, Gregg will be part of that rare group that includes Neil Young, all the Beatles, the members of CSN, Eric Clapton and Ronnie Wood in that he would become a two time inductee due to his already being inducted with the original Santana lineup.
Cool. Of course, the inductees will be announced on Tuesday. If they are inducted and they do perform it will be cool to hear him sing and even join Jonathan Cain on keyboards.
+ThreeMan AcousticJam Oh and with the magical bottom end of Valory and Smith back, will we hear some of these first three albums even if just the instrumentals Kohoutek and Topaz. Would love this one two, but without Rollie's haunting vocals could it be the same? Can a guy dream?
+Ray Segura I absolutely understand that Aynsley was on the early albums, and a mistro himself, and also so far removed from the "now" Journey sound. Smith is a great drummer in his own right, so the best it can be at this time. Hopefully the classics from the originals can return, but sadly not holding my breath.
+ThreeMan AcousticJam Steve Smith, always respectful of other drummers plays Aynsley's version in his style, but stays pretty honest to AD's interpretation of the song. But the album version with Aynsley can't be topped. Not even with the estimable Mr. Smith who is currently one of the world's greatest drummers.
Bullshit. He didn't want to play with Journey without Steve Perry back in the day. He loved Steve's voice. He's now just collecting a pay check in his pre-retirement stage of life because he's not making much money playing jazz. Remember, he's been playing in small jazz clubs to practically no-one in the audience, and he hasn't even been doing that many clinics. I don't think he has that much money until last year when he got back with Journey, since he doesn't get songwriting royalties because he's not a major songwriter with the Journey catalog. I think he's doing it to help them out since Castranova can't tour and Steve is playing with Neal's instrumental band that can't sell any albums or get gigs on their own. He also probably needs the money and is afraid to tell his fans. Now, Steve looks bored to death on stage and he won't even look at Arnel when Arnel's on the drum riser trying to get Steve's attention. He's phoning in his parts and he's just on stage to make it look like he gives a shit. Compare videos of Steve Smith with Perry and Steve Smith with Arnel. HUGE difference. He's doing the absolute bare minimum effort a drummer can do with Journey. His heart isn't INTO it like it was.
BS to you, lol Gregg is playing with one of the most talented group of musicians in the history of the music world, the Ringo Star Band, you fool. Playing in front of a dozen people, right. When he does get his band together to play Blues Festivals, again only a handful huh? As for Steve, he adored the first three album songs, he got to stretch and evolve, from 1978-80 before Gregg left and before the Perry/Cain duo teamed up and moved them to bubble gum, and then forced them to trade Steve for a drum machine, well, tells you all you need to know about the Steve Smith/Perry era post 1980
@ellaswing Greg didn't play his keys part following the solo, and they didn't finish the song. The way the song goes is like the sexual climax and the release and pass out.
This is Journey's Stairway to Heaven...
B Baldwin You are close but I disagree. Journey's "stairway to heaven" is Look into the future, the song.

Journey is missing Gregg Rolie, which is such a key player in this amazing band! I wish Gregg would re-join the band, alongside Jonathan Cain. Cain can play a mean guitar, too (as well as keyboards).
Oh why did this group not head to Europe at the time, where artistic talent of this type was highly appreciated ( the list is too long to name)?
You could write a thesis on what Journey did to to rock music and Japanese society with this concert.
This song is quintessential journey!
THE COUNTLESS VISIONS THAT ARE DRIFTING...WE HAVE BOTH BEEN WAITING...
Neal Schon playing an Ovation UK 2. Very versatile and underrated guitar. I can tell, I've got one !
I just realized that this video is 30 years old! Damn, wished I lived through those days.
What is it with cameramen and drummers. It took these people 2:22 minutes to realize there was also a drummer on stage.
Masterful version, hard to duplicate....
Back when Journey was #1 in the SF Bay Area.
The outro is just sick sweetness!❤
I HAD BEEN SEARCHING FOR YEARS FOR THIS CONCERT HERBIE HERBERT HAD SPOKEN ABOUT . THANKS SO MUCH TO EVERLOR FOR THIS QUALITY VERSION OF (OF A LIFETIME) MY EARS ARE SO SPOILED, I LITERALLY CAN'T LISTEN TO 80% OF KILLER BAND GEMS FROM THE SAME ERA. WE ALL WHO LOVE THE FIRST THREE ALBUMS SHOULD SIGN UP WITH EVERLORD AND HAVE HIM POST
THE WHOLE SHOW. THE PERRY TUNES ARE EVEN KILLER
OFF SETLIST SELECTIONS FEATURING PERRY'S RANGE
AND TALENT W/O ANY AKAI SAMPLERS ON. EVERLORD RULES
Que música..................
both singer are great.
but nobody give a thumb up for Neil Schon ?!
in all the discussions people speak about singer only..
Steve Smith best player on stage by far. (And they are all good!)
There first album is there best hands down in my opinion. Then there second and third are incrdible as well. Sucks they werent doing as good making songs like this. And had to resort to making songs like loving touching squeezing.
😂😂😂
Really excellent...would love to see Look into the Future with this quality..............
This is such an awesome song!
JOURNEY! they are prog.masters.
When I saw Perry there at the very beginning i was like NO, HE IS NOT SINGING THIS!
Great old tune
Correction, Steve Perry came in late 78 and Steve smith came in 79 shortly after. I think Steve Perry was just back stage for this song.
As one trained in hypnotherapy, this is an ideal song, particularly its golden, repetitive rhythm and beat-the perfect song for inducing...self hypnosis or a trance state.
This was the last show with Rollie in the band and I wonder if they allowed him to perform this song as a farewell gift.
Diostillrocks This was in the set lists through out the tour in and out with Kohutek. In Japan, I believe both this and Kohutek were played at all of the shows for use in the video
Diostillrocks must be the Captured tour
Completely agree!!
if you play this song and Manfred Mann's Visionary Mountains back to back it will be hard to tell what song is playing, they are so similar...but, Journey were first...
Excelente!!!
Viva Journey y Japon
Brian Washington ITA Greg is a founding member. I checked with Neal & YES Greg will be inducted also. Rightfully so!
Cool. Of course, the inductees will be announced on Tuesday. If they are inducted and they do perform it will be cool to hear him sing and even join Jonathan Cain on keyboards.
shut up.
First heard this when out camping , 1975, bought it next day, this is the one and only Journey, not the pop crap Perry one.
Watch this and then listen to the studio version from the first album
Song is Amazing 🤘🏿
@METALkid614 I have, and was there before Steve Perry at Winterland, next to the left speaker tower. Totally awesome!
Neil Shaun is past the threshold one of the greatest of all time
Neal Schon has moves on the guitar like Carlos Santana ✌️
This is killer. the 1974 live version on youtube doesn't come close
If they slowed this down a little bit more like the original version, it would be so much better.
YEEEEAAAAH!!!
Deep Purple tiene su Child in Time.... Led Zeppelin su Stairway to Heaven... Uria Heep su July Morning y Jouney esta majestuosidad....
Steve Smith's like, "Fuck yeah, I get to rock out for once without any Steve Perry pop tunes!" lol
THE MIST IS SLOWLY LIFTING...SITTING SPELLBOUND THROUGHOUT TIME. I HOPE YOU REMEMBER WHAT YOU FIND"
This is the bomb. Are you flippin kidding me?
Neal didn’t need gimmicks to be a great player he’s just got great talent! EVH cough cough
@ellaswing Greg didn't play his keys part following the solo, and they didn't finish the song. The way the song goes is like the sexual climax and the release and pass out.
Journey with Steve Perry are great, but without him, I don't feel that i have to buy their albums!
wut?
@@Pasquali_Sergal I meant after he left Journey. I have most of their albums.
@@bobbigboss111 i like journey with Gregg Rollie :p
@@Pasquali_Sergal I like him too. He is a legend.
True to the album version and yet still better. The fact they didn't mess around with it is a tribute to the original 1975 perfect production.
With Kohoutek, the best two songs Journey ever made, they'll survive all the rest
+Tom Sawyer (2II2) and....Topaz !
And Conversations...
agreed
THE MIST IS SLOWLY LIFTING...
