NO.The closest he came was Eclipse, and it was not a big seller. Face it, most fans loved the band when Steve was the front man. Not that this not a fantastic song, just not enough people buying it, and in the music business, it's all about the numbers.

    Months later, the band completed its most saccharine lineup with the addition of Jonathan Cain after Gregg Rolie, tired of the road and the musical direction of the band, decided to retire. Journey's next album, Escape, reached No. 1 on the charts with such "classics" as Open Arms, Don't Stop Believing, and Who's Crying Now. Perry and Schon quickly forged a musical partnership, leaning towards ballads such as Open Arms and the pussification of guitar solos such as the one in Who's Crying Now.

      Live versions on Who’s Crying Now are much better for that reason. I believe I read at one point that Neal insisted on adding that solo at the end of the song since Perry just wanted to leave it as more of a ballad. That’s really what made the song for me. Open Arms is a letdown for the lack of any instrumental portions.

    Yeah pry86, i like them to but everyone knows before Steve Perry, they couldt' get on the radio. Herbie will telll u that! With Perry as there front man it brought Journey into new dimension With Perry, Valory, Schon, Smith as a whole that's what put Journey on the map. But maybe u r too young to remember this, or u haven't done your Journey homework!1

      What did Perry do before or after Journey on HIS own dope. NOTHING...he is just another singer without those top shelf musicians behind him. The music definitely took a nose dive after Rollie left. I will take him over Perry any day of the week.

  • @randallwong7196
    @randallwong7196 2 года назад

    As far as I can tell a representative of the record company told the band the next album needed to sell better ( reach at least a million units ) or they'd get dropped. So what else could they have done?
    Then, when Rolie left he recommended to the band that they get Cain to replace him.
    Some of you people have so much anger, needing someone to blame, for stuff that happened over 40 years ago that isn't even a true tragedy.

    • @toddstevens13
      @toddstevens13 5 месяцев назад +1

      They could of done what Rush did, but then again, at least Rush's record company pushed the hell out of 2112, which Journey's reps never did, nor have them do long tours in Europe where this incarnation, could of opened for Gentle Giant, Hawkwind etc , then played smaller venues, and been in their pocket and where they would of been far more appreciated.

    Todd Stevens I was talking about the band, not individual members. I agree Gregg has gone to play great music, just not with Journey. With me, music is all about the voice, so the original 3 albums of fusion, with endless guitar solos, do not really interest me, other than the fact that Neal plays an awesome guitar. I prefer my rock music to have lyrics, and a great voice to sing them. Each to their own.

    • @toddstevens13
      @toddstevens13 8 лет назад +1

      That is not "rock" Dale, it is "pop" music, and I agree to each their own. So I take it then that since instrumentation is of no interest to you, you must enjoy the Bieber's and the Spier's then. Next, why on earth would you be seeking out anything from Journey's first 3 albums, and absolutely do not check out their Dream after Dream album, which has Steve Perry singing,. Just do not due it, it will underwhelm you, although it is Journey's finest hour with Perry involved.

    • @dalemoar3006
      @dalemoar3006 8 лет назад +2

      I have the Dream after Dream album, and I like it, although not as much as their other albums. Steve Perry has a voice that can make me stop and listen, no matter what he sings. I have nothing against instrumentation, and Journey does it very well, but as I said, it's the voice that makes me come back for more. And no, I'm not a Beiber fan, his voice is nothing special, IMHO.

    • @bfish89ryuhayabusa
      @bfish89ryuhayabusa 6 лет назад

      I don't get why the first three albums keep getting referenced as being dominated by guitar solos. There's a greater focus on instruments with less lyrics to get in the way, but much of that sounds the same to me as it would if a voice was singing the melody instead of an instrument. And there were only three songs without vocals, anyway, so it's not like very few songs had them. The song here, "Kohoutek", is one of the only ones where a song exists to serve a solo; in most cases, the solo serves the song. Pretty much any other case where it's just a solo is at the end of a song.

    • @jeffwarren4938

      What has Perry done before or after Journey? That us right..Nothing! But get fat as hell! He would have remained a nobody on the chicken farm (where Journey plucked him from) in Hanford, were it not for those world class musicians. If he was soooo great all by himself, why had he given up on music and was shoveling shit on his step dads chicken farm?
