    UPDATE
    Viewer Eric found some other great monitors for around $50 with higher resolutions:
    Option 1: geni.us/3BVPAS
    Option 2: geni.us/kAk13UA
    Original Monitor in Video: geni.us/50monitor

      These two don't have HDMI out. What cable would you need to connect them to a Lumix G85 that only has HDMI out?

    • @NunoGomes_
      @NunoGomes_ 7 лет назад +2

      they are monitors they dont have OUT only IN so they can show the image...
      The Option 2 has HDMI in and VGA in too. The First one only has AV in as far as I got in my tiny research, for that you'll need a HDMI female to AV male adapter or a HDMI male to AV male cable ( adise to go with cable if you can get it and get the best one you can find and afford because much of the image degrade is because of poor quality cables ).

      DSLR Video Shooter will the Panasonic G7 allow me to use one of these monitors?

    • @maciejkobus
      @maciejkobus 7 лет назад +5

      Partially. HDMI feed is cut off as soon as you start recording. So you won't be able to constantly use it for focusing and framing.

    • @celsoalberti5937

      This HDMI feed cut off happens specifically to the Panasonic G7 or to other cameras as well? What about Canons? Thanks.

      DSLR Video Shooter it was probably a 1/4-28 (fine thread) since it's cheap plastic/metal china made/ usa branded or metric if it's from China/ china branded.

      @DarkJesterHead 7 лет назад +1

      whats up with the comparison?

  • @DylanTee
    @DylanTee 7 лет назад +90

    So after seeing this video, I bought 3. Caleb is right, these are extremely sharp, perfect for grabbing focus. Now let's address the blue tint. They're blue - period. I would compare it to having a 3300k white balance while shooting under daylight. That being said, I bought 3 of these for less than the price of one "cheap" name brand. For my needs, I check that the colors are correct in camera, and then just use the monitor for focus pulling and having a bigger preview. For $50, you cannot get a better preassembled monitor. And if you only have a $50 budget for a monitor, you're probably buying this for your own personal use, and not for a client to view, so just look past the blue color and buy it.
    Another few quirks of this monitor
    - It's glossy black finish is a fingerprint magnet
    - The power/volume/menu/mode buttons are touch sensitive and they are EXTREMELY sensitive, they also make loud beeps any time they are touched.
    -You cannot access menu settings unless a source is connected.
    Overall, I knew exactly what I was buying and I am very happy that I purchased.

    In the old days of video camcorders, most viewfinders were monochrome, and pretty poor resolution. The only use was for framing. Manual focusing was very hit and miss. This by comparison is excellent. Surely the colour correction should be done post anyway, and shoot in a raw or log format. Judging by eye on any monitor, even calibrated ones is not going to be accurate. Most people have a colour perception difference between left and right eye. Good find, saved most of us $50 to experiment.

    I use a 24" Dell IPS monitor for framing and focus with my a6000. Since it's so big I add the metering and other metrics to the display so I can see record time, exposure, etc. For audio, I just record separately through an AT shotgun mic and use the built-in camera mic for sync. I'm a fan of external monitors in general, and I've thought about getting a 7" for more mobile work anyway.

    Aputure, Liliput, and FeelWorld all have usable budget field monitors with features like false color, focus peaking and zebra stripes. You should be able to find a 720P IPS 7" monitor in the neighborhood of $100-$170. Last year I picked up a new Lilliput 664/O/P for $110 on ebay. I think it's worth it to pay an extra $50 or so for a proper video field monitor that has video features.

  • @theSUBVERSIVE

    I like affordable tests but with comparisons, I think it's important that you have parameters to compare with. I really liked your LED comparison exactly because of that, often we see LED tests and we watch the whole thing and still don't know how good it's for what we want.
    But more useful than just cheap stuff would be actual good stuff on a budget. Maybe some Ikan and Aputure monitors, comparing feats, what's the cheapest that you can still get false color, vectorscope, waveform, etc. maybe you can find some unknown gem, who knows?

    I bought this monitor and I love it. I just needed it for framing since I self shoot my videos. I get a nice picture and the battery plate solution works fine. However when you put on the battery, even if the monitor is off, it drains power from it. A little quirk but not a deal breaker. This is probably the cheapest solution Ill find and it works great for my needs.

    There is a way to fix the blue tint on he monitor, it comes with a remote so you can go into the menu and fix the contrast and saturation to make it the right colors,

    • @Lilyindi
      @Lilyindi 4 года назад

      Contrast and Saturation doesn't affect white balance... Contrast affects contrast and saturation affects saturation. If your white balance is blue and you adjust the saturation all your going to get is more blue or no blue. Making it grey.

    I saved and picked up the Aputure fine HD 7" monitor. $250. Very flexible and came with; case, magic arm, sun hood, battery, power adapter, screen rag, blah blah. I had specific needs nad htis thing fit the bill to the "T" and didn't disappoint. One of the needs was cost. To buy the $50 you got would be quite a value. Good choice if the other considerations were not an issue. For me, I know what I want and would rather save up the money then pull the trigger on something I know I won't want to replace in the future. thanks for sharing tho' Could be a good #2 monitor if needed.

BUT, it does have it's niche - I have a Overhead Camera Platform rig for filming tabletop tutorials and I have a two camera setup for this, I don't need a full-blown field monitor for my secondary camera - just a 'peeking' display to keep an eye on composition. Great to see this affordable option. I looked for it by your links below but one didn’t work and the other was $56 now. I would like to find one at a higher price point that will last more than 2 or 3 years. Also something that doesn’t mind the elements and can be seen in harsh sunlight. Also, something with image stabilization would make a good topic. Then, how about showing in about 5 or six videos how to create a movie from start to finish. From idea to final editing and distribution or just RUclips posting. Thanks for the video.

    All 7.2 volt batteries will provide 8.4 volts when fully charged. Just as the "12 volt" battery in your car actually provides about 13.8 volts when fully charged. With the Sony battery, 7.2 volts (3.6 volts per cell) is the nominal voltage. Anything that is powered from a 7.2 volt battery expects to see 8.4 volts when it is powered up.

      IUSECAMERAS oh sweet. Can you connect it from a distance so you don't have to just have it right on top of the camera?

      have you noticed any delay on the monitor?

    Yeah if you have a Canon 5D Mark 2 or Mark 3 it would be great to just have a "flip out screen" for focus, exposure.

    nice tutorial .. thank you for sharing it with us.
    I have recently learned that I can use my smart phone as an external monitor ... and yes. it would be a much better option .. especially that you dont need to spend much on getting it to work... maybe about 10 bucks for a cable (if you dont have one) and an OTG adapter.

    More hyper budget gear! Love seeing items from other target markets/purposes being used for things like this.

    I agree with others that a video series much like the LED one would be great! There are plenty of reviews out there already for high budget equipment, and the fact that it can be difficult to get good reviews for some of the budget minded gear out there, I think these kinds of videos are welcomed!

    Wow, just purchased the 10" haven't got it yet. just want to monitor iphone 6 back camera, composition only, so this looks like the money. Have large monitors & TVs for the job just too big and clumsy. This looks fantastic, thanks for the honest appraisal.

    Don't know if I'll get one, but I use an a6000 with manual lenses, so if I get back into filmmaking, I'll be considering this for sure.

    The price is right and it has to be better than the built in LCD on my camera. Thanks for this video, very helpful.

    The thing I can't seem to find anywhere is information on using a phone or tablet as a field monitor on a Nikon or Lumix. There's plenty of stuff out there for Canon gear because of the popular app that's available specifically for that line of camera - why no love for other manufacturers? My problem is that I'm about to go trekking through the Himalayas for a month and keeping weight down is all-important - hence my desire to try and simply use my phone or tablet as a field monitor rather than lug an extra piece of gear along. I don't care about all the bells and whistles like controlling the camera from the phone - I'd just like the larger image to give me a better idea of framing, composition, etc for video work.

    Yes it was very helpful. With all the gear one can use. The budget is always a factor.

    I love how there is an image of Avril Lavigne on screen on the Amazon page. I'm sure the seller definitely got the rights to that photo! lol. Good video! I pretty much always like videos on budget stuff.

    Got a Cinemartin monitor for close to the same price. Pretty damn happy. And I already own a SmallHD! Now two camera people aren't fighting over a monitor.

    Love that doesn't come with the bunch of cables, and cable that comes with battery plate looks like can be plugged directly so nothing to adapt besides color cast love the idea, I think there's one called cinemartin that costs 100 and has focus peaking and zebras, but not is not on Amazon
