I accidentally unlocked my torque wrench and added about 15n/m to it when tightening a suspension subframe bolt. Bolt ended up WAAAAY past yield, and had I not decided to check when I did, it would have snapped. Needless to say; the threads on the frame were f'd up. Time-sert saved the day, though. Worked perfectly. A+ product.
I have used time serts since the early 70s I think. Used them my whole career. Still have my 8mm kit. Mb had cam bearing cap issues. Their fix was heli coils. What a cluster. So with a bit of mods i was able to use the time sert kit and had no issues, no comebacks. Time sets are the best.
I put a time cert in my ford 5.4 years ago, that had been previously repaired by a another type of thread repair insert.. They offered an oversized insert. I found a big kit on ebay. Worked great.
Very nice kit looks like the professional version. For any future oil pan issues I think I'm going to update my tool box with a aluminum weld in bung. I've seen the poverty key locking thread insert version on E-bay, I might be able to pull those off with just the insert if needed but then I'd have to change the bolt size.
1.1.21. I used a Time-Cert®️ to do a repair on a GM 3400 V6, rocker arm bolt thread repair in the aluminum heads, Being stripped out because of not using the Lisle™️ 48500 rocker arm tool while doing a lower intake manifold gasket change out. They are superior to Heli coil‘s™️ they might be spendy to buy at first, but they are an investment especially if you’re a full-time mechanic.
This is the same bolt hole that is stripped in my Forester. I helicoiled it. The bolt wobbled but torqued to spec ok. I'm going to put a Bigsert in it next timing belt. This is the last pulley to be installed and the belt bears down on it. I think mechanics just run it in with the air ratchet without making sure the bolt is aligned properly. A real headache caused by a few seconds of carelessness.
funny i just bought a tensioner bracket and proper bolt for the idler pulley. went to torque idler pulley and wrong bolt was in and stripped. good excuse to put a new shiny bit on the jdm ej207 refresh.
Thank you so much for your great work. My knowledge improved and I was no longer petrified to own my dream car, which is a Forester. I just like a box on wheels with decent AWD and ground clearance :) 2020 Forester e-boxer will be delivered in December. The reason for hybrid were mostly taxes. The price is almost the same for 2.5NA and 2.0l e-boxer in higher trim because of Japanese taxes. I'll send you some photos on other social media channels :)
I’m going to purchase a time sert kit for this very same idler hole on my 03. I found the kit with a 16.2 inset length do you still recommend that length over the 20
Not sure if this information is still true today, but when one is tapping threads, you never cut the threads in one continuous rotation. Instead, you rotate several turns to cut the new threads, back out, and then cut some more, then back out, continuing this back and forth process until you are done. My understanding for this is to allow the metal chips to escape so as not to cause issues with your tapping process.
Mr. Subaru I know I’m probably a little late but I’m an 18 year planning to buy a 06 to 09 Subie outback and I have a positive feeling that the car is for me (I’m northerner in NY) but I have mixed feelings about the station wagon can you do a video on the 06 to 09 I appreciate it BTW, the Subie Train don’t stop!!!!!!!!!!! and love the content keep posting
You make me feel better about all the new bolts I buy as a preventative. Do you have any local places you source out bolts.... Say the 14mm bolts to the front cross member? Just the more basic bolts. And did you ever wonder this, why hasn't some Chinese company offer those plastic plugs for the under carriage? Subaru must get a laugh out of selling that stuff.
How do you calibrate your torque wrench? I have one my wife bought me years ago, and a cheap one I picked up from HF so I could have torque settings under 10 lb-ft. The two seem pretty distant from agreement on !mutual settings.
All due respect but always best to tap a 1/2 turn in back of & repeat. Also You’re swaging not forging when seating the sert btw. But great fix, stronger than ever and would’ve been cool if came that way new
Admit it, you love all your cars even if they don't get touched all that often lol. It's a sickness, and we are okay with it lol. Are those snowflake wheels on the left of the fozzy :) Hard to tell but those used to be in very high demand lol. Anyone who loves subarus will know what snowflake wheels are. Great video! @@MrSubaru1387 Only a discerning eye like mine would even spot and comment on something like that hahaha. Those will be timeless wheels if you ask me, keep them clean and nice :)
Hmm what's that that burgundy coupe off in the upper left of the video? Looks like a classic! Great video, I've been wrenching for many years and never heard of those inserts. Spendy but definitely look way better then the cheap alternative!
Currently doing timing water pump on my 98 2.2l OBS. Top 2 water pump bolt holes are stripped 😥 all other torqued properly but these top 2 are just snugged but can spin if i torque them lol ugh.. I'm confused how on how to proceed. Any suggestions for this area and it being a tiny m6 x1.0 Thanks in advance Made comment before i watched. I will have to try this.. only issue i see is getting to the top most bolt its really hard to see and i have the radiator out too
@@MrSubaru1387 Ok will definitely remove bracket. Curious what socket you used when tapping with the guide? I ordered same kit but obviously m6 x1.0. i would like to use ratchet aswell seeing as my regular faucet tap handle wouldn't get good rotations in that spot with cam gear next to it. The timing of this video couldn't have been more perfect.. appreciate all your tips dude always
I was gonna ask you about tuning and Sti reliability. I’ve heard tons of horror stories about them. Would you recommend the stock tune or a pro tune? if you had an Sti what would you recommend to a new sti owner that wants to get a 100,000 miles out of it problem free?
I can't comment anything about a tune, but I struck up a convo with a guy who pulled in in a 12 WRX. Bone dry stock, except exhaust, and really ran good. Makes me a believer that if you treat them right they last. And from 100% experience, people who sell aftermarket upgrades if you call them that, have no personal interest in how long you own your car or if what they offer might hurt it. Very sad, but very true.
Dunno if "rocket surgery" was intentional or not but that's all I'll be saying starting today. I'm guessing the bolt hole on the tensioner is a specific size and wouldn't allow you to tap a bigger hole into the block? That would be the cheaper repair. I'll be sure to add the time-serts to my "oh shit" list on Amazon, hoping I never actually have to buy them.
Rocket surgery was definitely intentional. Usually good for a laugh. Haha. Correct moving up to an M12 bolt would keep said bolt from fitting inside the hole in the idler.
Hey Mr Subaru wondering if you got a sec for a brain teaser... 2001 Subaru outback vdc speedo and dash illuminate don't work clock an od dim when head light are turned on but that's its?? Fuse is good no idea here's to look next
Where's the video where you mention which engines have head gasket problems? My mother was just hit head on by an 88 year old woman driving a Tundra, who turned left into the wrong lane and straight into her.... Insurance says the car is totaled and isn't going to pay much... i found a 2010 OB with 125k miles sticker says 2.5i limited (non turbo)
Now I know what the better fix is, Timesert, prior to this video, I was only aware of Helicoil inserts, thanks for the demonstration Mr. Subaru ☮️
