  • The Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet is a school of classical ballet in St Petersburg, Russia. Established in 1738 during the reign of Empress Anna, the academy was known as the Imperial Ballet School until the Soviet era, when, after a brief hiatus, the school was re-established as the Leningrad State Choreographic Institute. In 1957, the school was renamed in honor of the pedagogue Agrippina Vaganova, who cultivated the method of classical ballet training that has been taught there since the late 1920s. Many of the world's leading ballet schools have adopted elements of the Vaganova method into their own training.

One thing the future primas seem to have in common, (apart from the higher than average extensions!) is musicality. They stay with the music and fill out the movement completely to the music. By comparison, some of the others just seem to be marking the steps.

Their musicality is all phenomenal. Obviously technique but their musicality is exquisite and is really what sets each prima apart from the rest of the class. I couldn't get enough of Viktoria Tereshkina and Olga Smirnova drawing out each movement so perfectly.

Wonderful collection of highlights from some of the best primas in the world! They all stood out in their respective classrooms doing some crazy hard combinations. Yes, that last combination from Lopatkina was killer! ❤️❤️❤️❤️👏👏👏👏

Мои фавориты Уля Лопаткина и Олеся Новикова. Лучшая Лебедь и лучшая Аврора.

И мои. Но для себя я бы ещё третью добавила - Викторию.

Looks like the iconic classroom got a 2011 update with a gray marly floor, chandeliers, fresh yellow paint and white double doors.

Honestly, it badly needed an upgrade and I think it looks better, more natural light.

I have no trouble identifying Lopatkina, Vishneva, Zakharova, but I am not sure where to look for the others. Do I look in the front line of the first group each time?

      Pretty much always front center
