Well, if you want to empty a symphony hall real fast, this'll do it. Unrelentingly grim and harsh, It's almost a parody of atonal music: slam, crash, bang, repeat. No bliss to be found here, but I suppose such is what it was to be a woman in early twentieth century Soviet Union.

Ustvolskaya is using blocks of sound here and tone clusters to create a dirge of sound. It's actually quite painful to listen to this work, but displays the further development of her unique style of composition.
If you go and watch a film containing gory violence, you don't expect to see Julie Andrews singing songs from Mary Poppins. When you listen to Ustvolskaya's music don't be surprised if the same niceties fail to appear.

Música apropriada para filmes do Boris Karloff ou como complemento a cenas de Hitchcock

I dare say the piece is a little gimmicky and short on musical inventiveness. Her first Piano Sonata is a work of young genius. This much later piece lacks inspiration.
