- In this video we fit an Android head unit into our Land Rover Freelander 2. Doing this means that the navigation DVD is no longer used but all other factory functions remain fully useable. We will be doing more videos on using the system shortly.

I’ve got a Mondeo and I routed my GPS cable up to the driver side windscreen pillar and hid the little aerial box under the plastic covering! Works fine, It doesn’t need to be in the centre of your dashboard 👍
As usual Simon precise, practical and simple. I’ve swapped my factory unit on an 07 TD4 for a Kenwood DDX DABS unit and removed the CD et al. Didn’t have the LR say nav screen to contend with.
The ‘connector harnesses’ can be temperamental (mine was) so required a bit more fiddling than said on the tin. But out with the old- in with the new, CarPlay, android auto and Digital Radio - all for a less than a laptop.
Fitted my Android 11 Unit today. Thank you for the excellent videos showing how to remove the fascia etc and replace the old Head Unit.

Hi, about time the freelander had a little love, fitted an Xtrons recently, absolutely brill, reversing camera, dash cam, TPMS, and OBD2 monitoring, plus loads of apps, definitely a great upgrade and of course another great video from yourselves, keep um coming..

Perfect timing gents - I've just bought a 2011 plate XS and am keen to go down this route in ditching the LR SatNav!
I made the video just for you Ian.... currently we do not sell this item... although we could but in the past have found that for the profit we need to give a lot of support..... so still unsure about stocking these...

Hi chaps I was thinking about the support issue and I agree that it can be a very significant. Perhaps the way forward is to do a series of videos - I sense this might be the plan given how this one ends - and deal with each technology, especially Car Play and Internet connectivity, I suggest this could then be supported through a dedicated support forum in which other FL2 owners could contribute.

I bought the exact same unit and installed it 2 days ago. With the basic radio the cable loom is slighthly different. Had to cut two wires and weld them together to get power on the device.
I'm having same issue, plugged all in but no power to it, what do I need to do?
@@chrism1749 what radio do you have ? The basic one or the one that look like a phone ? You have to check on which cable the power is at the moment and see on the sticker on the unit where that power need to go. The loom wiring might be wrong for you like it was for me.

A nice basic install video, great work as always simon, would be nice to see it all up and running with Carplay, Reverse cam and phone etc working and maybe even with wifi dongle, i have seen a few with a custom LR intro screen....but again nice work young man
Yes the car is not texed at the moment - so i am not driving it but i could put the trade plates on it and go for a play... Carplay is the best... i was not bothered about it until i tried it in the new Defender and its really very good.
@@L663 Simon i follow all your videos and very pleased as they are totally down to earth, no mumbo jumbo. i watched one you did with the Gap diagnostics, have you thought about doing a video on a diagnostics system thats a lot cheaper? I am not plugging anything but i purchased the AUTEL MaxiAP 200 recently for £50 and for our FL2 and that system will program your keys, damn cheaper than dealer prices, just a thought you may do a review on one.

Could you please clarify the following:
- the steering wheel controls for (1) audio and (2) for phone calls, still function as before?
- the parking sensors acoustic signal still lower the volume of the sound system and is still coming through the speakers?
- when a call is made/received, is the radio muted?
It looks like the Xonrich unit I bought. Cheaper than the Xtrons but rather laggy GPS and I could not change the launcher sucessfully. Also the "BAND" button is completely useless as the radio in the Xonrich unit cannot be used - no antenna connected.

I'm looking for an Android navigation system for my Freelancer 2 2010 L359. The original infotainment system including navigation is already installed here ex works. About 2 years ago, I tried to install an Android device from xTrons. The original infotainment system with the Land Rover navigation system was not compatible and xTrons took the device back.Can the device you installed be connected to the original performance and operated?

Hey! Thanks so much for this video, it was super helpful. I just wondered if you could help me further. I replaced the original screen because it wasn't working, it was just doing the system start up over and over but the new screen isn't getting any power either.
It works when hardwired to the battery but not from the amp. I've checked the fibre system, there are red lights everywhere there should be and I've looped out the nav at the screen as well as under the seat, as the whole system has been removed.
The amp/CD player just does the start up cycle too. So everything has power but it wouldn't seem enough to turn on and stay on. I've tried replacing the amp/CD player for a new(second hand) one and it does exactly the same thing. Just wondering if you'd experienced this before and if it might be a simple fix in the wiring somewhere?
It's a 2007 Freelander 2 with the alpine sound system, originally had nav but not since I've had it.

Found the issue for anyone experiencing the same thing...the Bluetooth module in the car was faulty, bought an additional fibre loop to loop it out and solved all the problems. Everything working fine now!
Bluetooth module is located in the boot, driver side under the plastic trim, to get to it you have to remove the trim across the bottom of the boot, pull out the little plastic lug on the right, unscrew the metal hook bottom right and then pull the plastic trim away, doesn't need to come all the way off, you can access it quite easily.

If you're happy to rely on your phone for Android Auto, plugged into these head units, do you need to bother with the GPS or microphone plug-ins? Can you just wire in the basics then plug in the phone?

Hi recently bought a freelander 2 with the xtrons system already fitted by the previous owner, it is missing the part with the USB ports that replaces the usual rubber mat, is there any way of getting hold of just that piece, thank you.

hello simon I have a problem with this android radio, every time I turn on the car, the radio turns on and the screen remains blank, about 10 minutes then it returns normal, other times it remains blank much longer, after giving it the reset button is normal again, what can it be?

A bit worrying to watch but what about cable rattles etc...will anything get hot near heater trunking etc? I don’t have a Freelander now but would have been very interested in this..many will want a system if it is not too expensive. 🙂🙂
I had something similar in my old e46, no issues at all with wiring or rattles
So I've bought this for my 2012 FR2, however because I have the fibre optic Alpine system (without the screen) the connectors don't match. Is there a wiring diagram I can follow to splice the right cables please? Alternatively I am only near Kidderminster, so if you run a fitting service that works too!

Hi, I bought the same unit and I ran into the same problem with the radio, how did you get the head unit to power on because we have tried several different things and are unable to get the unit to power on.

@@DanClarke so I have a HSE,was all of the parts required as in the video to work with it?including the steering wheel controls?
@@marktrundle7410 Steering wheel controls did not work (again it does say it comes with a CANbus box so they should work, but it didn't arrive) - volume does work though (as going into original unit). Mine is a TD4 GS so not sure if it'll count for you, but at least for me it came with everything.

Hey, appreciate all of the useful information you provide on LandRover vehicles! I have a 2015 LR4 (Disco 4) with the inControl Touch Plus Infotainment System. I’m really interested if you ever considered upgrading this system to the inControl Touch Pro found in early Discovery Sports (2016-2018)? Then the screen size is the same as the LR4’s with very similar physical shortcut buttons around the screen. The reason I am interested is because LR recently provided updates for all the Touch Pro systems to have Apple Carplay Integration. I think there are some aftermarket solutions for the LR4 but I love the idea of operating the same as stock Land Rovers. If a conversion kit was made possible I’d purchase for sure. Thanks again for all the tutorials you provide!

Greetings, have you considered to install the upgrade to a tesla type screen? I have found some android fits for Freelander 2, whit large vertical screens. I’m considering ordering one and try. It will be great to have the comparative for these Android Unit and the other tesla type android unit. I find one of 10 inches and another of 13 inches.

Saw this video, finally persuaded me to go for the xtrons unit. All cabling went together in sockets as described, great. Switched on and nothing! Discovered a blown fuse, restored to original and now radio isn't switching on beyond clock. Not impressed!
To be fair, wired in 2nd time and all working fine. Only slight gripe, have to turn the volume up quite a bit.

Trying to buy a freelander on a tight budget. Was going to get an XS but can only find GS with no screen. Can I still install this or any CarPlay unit?? Great show. Hope the fire fighting is still going well?
I have not looked at what connections are on the XS but I would hope the main power cables etc are available.

Could this system be fitted to the 2013 basic model with small screen without sat nav? I know it won't just fit, it will need some MacGyvering. But, could it be done?

Its still working OK but it can be glitchy at times

Its probably a good idea but not essential if you are careful !

They are improving these units all the time - faster processor and new versions of android etc...and improving the software. As these improve the existing units are getting more outdated so the case for upgrading get better every day !
Hi Simon, something bother me with this unit. I installed mine a few weeks ago and it seems to be always powered on. I can turn it on without the key on the ignition and the "power" button on the unit seems to only put it to sleep and not turn it off. Is it normal that it is always on? How do you turn it off? In my mind it should power on with the ignition key and power off when you take out the key.
Hi it takes the power from the original LR wiring - it may be that LR leaves power to the unit for say 5 minutes and then it goes into a "sleep" mode. Give it a go... if you get out and lock the car i think it will turn off pretty quickly.
I remember researching this a while back, the power stays on in the Freelander 2 for about 30 mins. When you are locking the vehicle you can press the lock button on the key fob twice to accelerate the power off of the vehicle. Hope that helps.

I just did a fitting video... i think it helped many people.... do your own research on what is the best unit - the spec of these units changes very quickly.
