    hey y'all, in today's video I'm talking about personal responsibility narrative. If you've been online you've probably seen comments like: no one forced you to shop, it's your fault you're in so much debt etc etc. I'm sharing my opinion on this and influencer responsibility.

    As a 55 year old, I have to say this. Before social media, ALL marketing & advertising was seperate from entertainment (with the exception of ad placement in movies ie. an actor holding a can of pop). There were clear boundaries between watching a sitcom and then 2 minutes of ads. There were clear boundaries between a magazine article and an ad for say, laundry soap. And YET...even though we clearly knew what was advertising...we still got taken in.
    With social media, marketing is so woven into entertainment, we can't see where an influencers "authentic real life" and sponsorship begin and end.
    I've had to REALLY scrutinize carefully the content I watch and ask, "does this allign with MY life and MY values".
    It's getting harder, people! Be discerning!♥️🇨🇦

  • @tracyingram7939
    @tracyingram7939 Месяц назад +166

    Personal responsibility only goes so far. Putting all the responsibility on the consumer as an influencer is just an influencer not taking personal responsibility for how their job and their actions affect others. People that defend influencers by saying 'they didn't force you to do something' are confusing power and influence. But influence is incredibly powerful in getting people to do what you want them to do, it's not a gun to someone's head, it's getting into someone's head and manipulating them into thinking that they need to buy things to make their lives better.

      @@shawnaripari Just a suggestion if you want to look into it-there's a lot of really good information about power and influence in societies in anthropology books/articles. It's been about 7 years since I had to look for that stuff for an anthropology class that I used to teach, but there has to be so much more now. 🙂

      I totally agree, but I actually like to focus on personal accountability in this situation since that's the only element we have true control over....our own choices and actions. Personal responsibility is the way to take our power back. There will always be people out there trying to manipulate others into doing what benefits them, and not the people being manipulated. It's something we need to learn to identify and resist by being mindful of our choices and taking responsibility when we can see they are essentially hurting us. I see a lot of people out there denying this responsibility (and power) by saying things like "TikTok made me buy it" or justifying it as "girl math", etc.
      That said, the influencers who act like they have no part in it and shift the blame solely to those they influence are totally denying their *own* personal responsibility for the huge role they play in all this.

    • @tracyingram7939
      @tracyingram7939 Месяц назад +6

      @@maddie8415 Yeah, very true, there will always be people doing this. Putting all the responsibility on the influencer isn't going to solve much either. And we do need to be accountable for ourselves as well-can't be influenced by influencers if you choose not to watch them at all. This is a two-way street and we can only do what we can do, but it is a big part.

    Love this video! A major thing I’ve noticed as influencer marketing has just exploded is that reviews become less and less involved. It used to be that people, even when they received stuff in PR, gave those items a fair and serious try. Wearing makeup for 24 hours or a week and giving updates or using an item consistently in their life to see if it worked for them. Now the goal is to sell as many items as possible as quickly as possible. I really don’t believe influencers when they say “this changed my life you need this” because there’s no proof they didn’t just open it that day, take a video of them using it, and post it. The worst is when they do unboxing hauls and act like the clothes they literally haven’t put on yet are must-buys. It feels so grimy.

    "consume like influencers" resonated with me. I am 28 this year, so I think I'm between generations (I don't keep up with those distinctions). The types of content I've watched over the years online about collections, hauls, and best-of [x] category normalized to me having a lot of stuff because it makes you happy and/or looks nice in its organized spaces in your home. Throughout my 20s so far, I have been constantly battling with the physical limits of my space (apartment) and the desire to own variety so I have *everything* I could want. What I have realized in the last few months is that with my goal to have everything I want, I can't ever achieve it. There will always be something new or a variation that I could have. This is exacerbated when consuming influencer content. I think the relationship between influencer culture and being content could be a great discussion!

    I prefer people who review items as needed. For example, a singer or rapper who reviews a microphone they bought intentionally because they felt they were due for an upgrade rather than someone who reviews endless products.
    For example; a person with textured skin or oily skin reviewing a new foundation after finishing an old one they actually used.
    The cycle of review content can be so wasteful when you’re making content to make content rather than using content to communicate your actual product needs and preferences to those interested in the product.

The tiktok demographic preys on a very western capitalist mentality of "if you buy this you'll feel important/younger/happier/sexier/stronger". I think im kind of over it. My main priority is protecting myself and my friends from a looming technofascist government and greedy landlords/bosses at their workplaces. Like..how can i shop for cute summer outfits right now, when project 2025 could happen?! My mind is half in a fun world.. maybe the feeling of summer 2016 when we were playing pokemon go, and half preparing for ww3 and fascist militias attacking women, bipoc and lgbt folks. Like lemme touch up my winged liner while civil war 2 creeps up. 😂😅😢 It's a mindfuck right now. Being an influencer is a valid job, after all it's better that a few people review products than everyone wasting their money, however they do have to be put on a higher moral standard because they get stuff for free, it doesn't help they don't like stating what is and isn't an ad on TikTok. However us as consumers have to do our due diligence, and call out influencers who are abusing their power, as well as brands and sites that allow it. We also have to be more mindful about how we consume. I've heard too many people tell me "But it's entertaining. People are having fun." like and??? People have fun on coke does it mean they should be doing coke? No.

As someone who has realized many of my purchases over the years have been as a result of influencing, it is helpful to hear commentary to help me deinfluence. I think a good video idea would be "Why you could NEED a product and why you may only want a product". A lot of these influencer products are frivolous and unnecessary, but occasionally they could be necessary for someone with a disability or mobility issues. It would be interesting to show how certain products may be needed by one person and why those same products may be unnecessary to another.

    I agree with this video somewhat. I do think influencing is unethical, and I think we need to hold influencers more accountable than we currently do. Very much appreciated this video doing that.
    However, I think that oftentimes when we blame the influencers we let go of all of our own personal responsibility. People going into debt / living paycheque-to-paycheque is not the influencers' fault. As someone who is older gen z and grew up w RUclipsrs, I was influenced to over consume, though I feel not to the same extent as others. There are definitely other factors at play than just influencers. I do still think we have personal responsibility. We have power and it is up to us to use it to do the right thing. That doesn't mean it isn't hard, but just because influencers exist doesn't absolve us of our responsibility.

Then when I came out of it and moved to college I swung the other way because I finally had the independence and ability to spend my own money. I also got on tiktok which didn’t help. Being in college (especially during the pandemic) and not working meant I had SO much time scrolling.
    For me being on social media at all is more of a problem than shopping. I have more of a binging mentality related to shopping. If I think about the thing that I want for too long I won’t buy it and it’s really easy for me to not spend any money at all. What is really hard for me is to buy the things that I actually want and also not buy extra things I don’t need/or really want

    The idea that it’s the consumer’s fault is a disingenuous statement and people know better than that, it’s just borderline hateful and trying to shame people. #1, we live in a society, no one lives in a silo, no one is self made, that is a myth. These influencers need other people to do what they do. I implore these hateful commentators to live on a deserted island and see how “self-made” they can be without other people to acknowledge it. #2, marketing as a vocation was developed to sell people things they DON’T need, it is literally an entire vocation to drum up people’s desire for things that are not necessary. If there were a group of us on a deserted island would you prefer to be stuck with an influencer or a chef, construction worker/architect or doctor? I’ll let people reading this be the judge of that…and #3, in a consumer based society (as opposed to “use based”), if everyone decided to be “responsible” and stop buying things they don’t need the economy would stop, why else do the politicians say “go out and shop” when there is a slow down in the economy. People are so hateful, you’re damned if you do, damned if you don’t, so it’s a disingenuous binary, “your fault” vs “their fault”. And like you said there is always someone trying to sell you something…the only social media I consistent use is RUclips but I can’t even get gas without a commercial showing, so the other hateful idea of “just turn it off” is also a fallacy. I have to get gas, I have to go to the doctor (commercials there too)

    Responsibility, when it comes to large scale or systemic issues, is almost always going to be shared-and not necessarily equally. I think it's important to hold individuals, influencers, advertisers, corporations, etc. accountable in a way that's proportionate to the role they play in perpetuating a problem like overconsumption. Certain people and groups have a much larger impact than others, and I think should be called out for it. That said, we have the most control over changing our own behaviors, so self-reflection is also quite valuable! They have been helpful when I’m looking for information and I do understand the service they’re providing by showing swatches of make up so you can decide what color is right for you or examples of good products to help you buy the one that’s right for you but the number of products you see and all the recommendations of what’s great definitely make me more inclined to buy things I don’t need.
    There’s only so many times I can hear “these are some great face sunscreens” or “here are some of my favorite face washes” before I think “well maybe that’s a better sunscreen or face wash, I’m going to try it” instead of remembering I have a face wash and sunscreen and moisturizer I really like and that work well for me. When I keep trying new things, I just end up wasting time and product because inevitably I go back to what was already working. Do you want to deal with decluttering or moving into a new home the stuff you've bought within the next year if you had to flee a disaster or if you get old or limited in your mobility? Happens to all of us, and thinking about mortality makes us appreciate the here and now. Influencers and marketing people all want us to forget that we will die, or that our bank accounts are not infinite. It's a brain numbing manipulation thing.

    Your videos have really helped remind me about being mindful!! I've been into thrifting/sustainability etc for a while, but haven't paid as much attention to marketing tactics (for example). Today I went to target for the first time in a while (I try to limit how many new things I buy and this was to mainly buy new bookshelves to replace rickety ones). I noticed there were multiple "summer MUST haves" and "summer ESSENTIALS" collections that kind of blew my mind. It becomes really obvious once you see it, there wasn't anything must have about any of them! Same thing with "dorm essentials! Back to school MUST HAVES". It also reminded me of how in my class on propaganda, we studied Edward Bernays, who was essentially the founder of making people feel their identity was tied to purchasing objects. He had the idea to make cars into sex symbols, for example. The history of advertising and how it ties in with capitalism and overconsumption would be an interesting video for sure! :D

    hi Shawna, I wonder what you think about this: if someone is a review-type influencer, such as an interior design influencer helping people choose furniture and decor, or a fashion influencer helping people choose clothes, or a makeup influencer helping people choose makeup, etc. - what is the most ethical way to do it? since after all people do need clothes and furniture and a lot of people want to wear makeup. how can one avoid promoting overconsumption?
    (deleted my earlier comment accidentally 😅 thank you for thought-provoking content as always!)

    • @shawnaripari
      @shawnaripari  Месяц назад +3

      I think to some extent there's a relatively small window where review channels remain (in my opinion) spaces that don't promote overconsumption. I would really consider the example the individual channel sets. Ex. Do they themselves showcase and aestheticize owning large quantities of stuff? Do they have hauls? Are they providing education (in some kind of capacity) more than they are pushing stuff? Do they review things they received in PR? I've given things I'd consider opposed to stuff I think a channel should do because these are just my initial thoughts. If I was to ever personally become a review channel I'd consider whether my channel had an overall net positive, negative, or neutral impact on my subscriber's consumption. You cannot control everything as a channel but I'd infuse that thought that with all my choices.

She is also one of the only ones I have heard saying that you can not spend a lot on kids, and it doesn’t really take much not to. I’m old, but I feel the same. We didn’t have any of the “ newfangled” baby and toddler stuff, and, guess what, the kids survived and thrived :). Our parents put a blanket in a pulled out drawer for all of their babies, true story. Now, we didn’t go that far :)

    I've noticed this with musicians, too. Mainly Taylor Swift, but I'm sure it happens with other artists. But there's this community aspect of feeling like you need to collect every variation of an album she releases or else you feel like you're missing out on content. However, if you raise points about overconsumption or the environmental issues that comes with producing and shipping these many album variants, that same community responds with "no one is forcing you to buy it." And no, no one is forcing you to buy the physical CDs or albums, but also you feel ostracized from the community if you don't have these things, and it just becomes this vicious cycle.

    Gen Z here (2000) and I feel like it really is becoming a simulacrum - even ordinary people post differently now, less casual like we did in 2012/13. Maybe different because I was a pre-teen then. I do think we are seeing some pushback though - in the early 2010s it felt like the internet was a place for the kids who didn’t fit in at school to be creative, but now a lot of the creativity is gone and it’s like the popular kids figured out they could make money off of being pretty and selling everyone stuff. But a lot of my friends who like me can’t afford to rent in London, seeing someone our age live in a big house just from selling poor quality products to the masses, we’re disengaging

    Most purchases will not solve any actual problem, or improve your life at all. But influencers often try and convince us they do with phrases like "run, don't buy" or "you have to get this new xyz", that's why it urks me. They exaggerate or lie about how much they like something (and don't provide any constructive/useful feedback about the item) because it was free or they are paid to advertise it. If it was an ad, we'd know it was fake, but they try to make us believe otherwise and most don't mention it's sponsored/free at all.

    The not watching influencers for 2 weeks is so true. I don't watch those videos anymore and haven't for years. I would shop for those things they would talk about. I did get in credit card debt. I still have some credit card debt because of medical bills. But I now see my money can go towards other and more beneficial things so I don't want to spend my money on frivolous things. I just watch informative and crime videos on RUclips now 😅

    As a gen z person, I would say my lifestyle is 1000% dependent on the content I surround myself with. Specifically, when I use tik tok more often, I find myself wanting to buy more (whether it’s makeup, books, running gels/shoes, etc. ). It’s definitely a problem because it’s the content that i like to watch but I am much better off when I distance myself from it

    I love your channel and I am happy I stumbled on it.
    I feel a bit conflicted, as a huge part if the content I consume online is based on how to sell more. I am a self employed blacksmith jeweller and have to make a living of selling the things I make, things that are not at the most essential, jewellery.
    At the same time I don't want to contribute to over consumption and take any more than I need. It's one of the reasons I never chose to expand to have my work manufactured en mass to be able to offer cheaper prices.
    My question is, that from your point of view, how can I balance the need to market and post content with sustainability and not forcing people to spend beyond their means?
    Social media seems to be the only way I can shout out "hey I exist! Please buy from me. " I would love to know if it's even possible and if you have any suggestions.
    I am Xenial, so cannot really answer your question, but I am super concerned about my gen alpha child. Their concept of ownership and buying is so different from mine.
