I just finished watching a video where a beauty creator I trust reviewed makeup. I made a mental note when she mentioned how she "unfortunately" didn't like a product, how she "really wanted to like it," and how she "felt bad" criticizing them because they sent her the whole shade range. She then mentioned all the other products this brand has that she likes. Actually, I hear this sentiment in a lot of review videos. So, when people say they aren't influenced by sponsorship or PR, I think maybe they don't recognize it.

TikTok influencers don't wanna disclose their ads because they know EVERY video is an ad.
No one would follow them if they knew they were being sold to 100% of the time.

I wouldn't say EVERY video is an ad but some people take the greedy path and ONLY make content if it's monetizable. They don't actually want to share any authentic viewpoints or personal stories. Completely draining out the whole "relatable" goodness influncers used to have.

Interesting point about Fundie Fridays’ viewers being more forgiving about sponsorships than beauty channels. I agree!
Here’s why for me: I don’t know what the revenue model is for FF besides sponsorships & AdSense. And I suspect their YT revenue isn’t super high given the topics they cover (probably frequently demonetized).
In contrast, I do have some idea about revenue models for beauty channels: tons of free product, events and trips for some, and the large potential in affiliate links, plus the overall ad-friendly environment they work in. And sponsorships on top of it (sometimes hidden), for the same category of products they’re also reviewing.
So if I want to enjoy something, the creators have to have a way to make money doing it. With FF, I don’t feel like I’m the vehicle for them to be able to make a living doing something I want them to keep doing. So I’m not bothered seeing a Hello Fresh sponsorship.

It’s also quite annoying that, since I’ve opted for RUclips Premium, it means I am willing to pay the 16,99€ per month to stop being bombarded with advertisements, however, on almost any video I click, the content creator stops the flow of the video to advertise products or services completely irrelevant to the channel topic.

    • @erensalias
      @erensalias Месяц назад +4

I was just thinking about this! It’s one reason I dont have premium. If youtube is gonna offer to get rid of ads if we pay money? Then they should take that money and pay the creators a living wage so we Don’t Still Get Advertised To. Or at least implement a premium feature where a creator has to mark the timeframe a sponsorship is included in and that section is automatically skipped or something. You’re right on the money with this comment

I had to stop watching Cinema Therapy, because a licensed therapist promoted his own practice for a while directly on videos. That thew me off, as a licensed therapist myself, because their channel is about reviewing movies/shows from a film and therapeutic perspective and NOT legitimate therapy. I considered it unethical that he was using his audience’s connection with him as an entertainment channel to funnel them in part to his and his (now ex) wife’s practice.
Then I unsubscribed when for years they chose to be sponsored by BetterHelp despite so many reaching out to the channel about its abuse of patients, working therapists, and therapists who didn’t even work there having their information used to get more customers.

Just a few of my thoughts:
    1. I agree that the ratio of sponsored to unsponsored videos matters to me. There are some youtubers who used to be quite popular (I'm thinking RawBeautyKristi and Hello Fresh) who seem to only (or mostly) come back to post a video when they have a sponsor. "I'm seeing this video because it seems like they have a contractual obligation to post and not because they legitimately would have made a video otherwise" definitely rubs me the wrong way as a viewer.
    2. I've seen mixed thoughts from people (mostly on reddit) about sponsorships for things related vs. unrelated to a creator's content. Some people seem to agree with you that it can be jarring to see someone who only reviews makeup do a sponsored segment for e.g. a mobile game when they have literally never mentioned that before, but I've seen some other people who say it seems to be more trustworthy specifically because they're unrelated. I think I tend to prefer when sponsorships are either related or semi-related (I feel like Thomas Flight and is partnership with Nebula is a really good example). I broadly want to feel like the person would have used/will use the item/service even if they weren't sponsored.
    3. I hate the same-y feeling about a lot of sponsored posts. You can tell Hello Fresh requires e.g. showing people the food/card with the instructions, cooking it, the person taking a bite, etc because it's in every video. Halara recently did a bunch of sponsorships and each post had someone showing the outfit for ~30-60 seconds, spinning around, etc and it's just really off-putting to see the exact same thing from multiple people when they wouldn't naturally post that way. I'd rather see some variation/let the person being sponsored do something creative.
    4. People sometimes turn off their minds when they see people they like getting sponsorships. The comments might be like, "Get that bag, queen!" and stuff like that, but it's for the worst companies lol. One ASMR channel that I watch justified a Better Help sponsorship recently after people told her about their history by saying, "If it helps one person, it's worth it!" Ok, but what if it hurts 20 more? And a bunch of the comments on that post are people saying things like, "Thank you for your transparency," "Creators should take any money they can get given how volatile the industry is," "It's the consumer's responsibility," (which it partially is, but it's also the person pushing that particular thing's responsibility too) "Girl boss!" (I can't), etc. The entire thing is just kind of ew to me. You can "get your bag" ethically and, as you say, no one is forcing anyone to be a content creator, so it's a choice through and through to partner with shady sponsors on one's content.
    5. There's a way in which beauty content creators talk about products that also rubs me the wrong way. There was someone I was watching this morning who said they really wanted to get on the PR list for a company, so they were considering making a purchase of an item they didn't really want to do a dedicated review to help spur that along. I know PR isn't quite the same as sponsored content (though it does change the relationship), but like...a) they didn't want the product they were talking about b) if they did buy it, they want to get on the PR list, so what are the chances it's going to be unbiased? c) if they end up on the PR list, they're going to want to stay there, so future reviews are now skewed. I trusted Angelica Nyqvist's reviews quite a lot when she lived in Sweden because she purchased most things herself and had to pay a lot for shipping and would receive items often much later than a lot of American/Canadian reviewers. This meant that she was invested in the item enough to want to spend a disproportionate amount to get it and yet would likely be paid less on RUclips for any review because it would come much later than people who could get the item next day.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk lol! Thanks for the great video as always.

wow, thanks so much for your great comment! I totally agree that sponsorships aren't a totally black and white issue or that they're crappy and wrong 100% of the time. I do get the' get your back' mindset or supporting creators who are able to monetize their content like that for the first time because when your adsense is low and you can get sponsorships I do understand it can make a difference. However, as you've said some brands just aren't worth it.

The information about how little TikTok pays creators really does shed a lot of light on why that platform has become one big commercial...and shows us just how wary the audience should be of what creators are promoting. It's truly wild the amount people can get for promoting a product so we should expect zero honesty (and also be aware that these paid promotions are often undisclosed).
I am not saying this to badmouth these creators, but to show how much the audience needs to think for themselves and protect their own best interests. I also think that there are many kids and young people who want to make this style of content creation their main source of income...and I'd really caution people against that. I think you can only peddle infinite products before people get get tired of it, and by that time you'll probably be just as tired of doing it.

First i want to say i really enjoy your videos! You always bring great info and thoughts!
Sponsorships have been bothering for some time. I watch a lot of commentary channels, and a lot of them make sure to voice their progressive beliefs.
So it REALLY bothered me when a channel I liked, who was very vocal about justice and morals, suddenly made a video sponsored by TEMU. I still can't believe they did that and I unfollowed their channel.
I'm talking about a channel specifically but it happened multiple times, like being sponsored by Betterhelp which is a big no.
It's just so hypocritical to make your entire channel about being pro equality and accept sponsor by unethical brands like these...

I find that it is much easier to discern between advertisement and actual content in a magazine, so I don’t really feel lied to. They also have actually good insightful articulate writers (it’s almost like they had to receive some type of formal education or something lol…). I do just find the quality of fashion magazines like Marie Claire, Vanity Fair, Vogue, etc. all in all to be much better. Just today, I watched a long video from the costuming/cosplay side of youtube, where a sponsorship thing really made sense!
The creator had a big messy pinterest board for a specific project that was getting unruly, and they created a more compartmentalised board with the sponsor's service (which I, to be completely honest, don't remember already, whoops), and made almost a walkthrough of the process, using their project as an example
And now it reminded me of how writing advice type channels sometimes got sponsorships from a service that has a similar thing, but less visuals focused, more text focused - with possibility to add information about certain spaces and characters that are easy to return to later
And in both cases it made sense (as it seemed to be something the creators genuinely liked using, and that chimed well with their content), and the tools advertised generally seem quite useful in the thought organisation process

I can get behind a hello fresh ad done by creators that would not have otherwise a revenue such as true crime channels. They are, as far as the audience knows, often de-monetized due to their content. You're right that the niche matters a lot, especially in niches that have a rate of demonetization or their monetization or RPM is overall low. I think because people go to some channels to learn, the viewers aren't in an interested to buy mindset, nor is the channel selling much outside the sponsorship. My TLDR is that I don't think gambling should be illegal, but the marketing is SO pervasive that it seems to heavily encourage it. Tbh I never watch spon con, I just fast forward through it. Even if it could be something I might be interested in, in theory, I just find it cringe 9 times out of ten. I just don't want to be sold to, especially when it's always such fake promotion.

I'm not on tiktok, but my patience for ad is very limited... I understand people need ads in they videos to earn more, but I like do follow creators that I enjoy they personality... When I watch a video that is a 10 minutes get ready with me or a vlog or something like that, that for me is a low effort video, with 5 youtube ads plus a sponsorship I stop watching that youtuber... also if the ad is totally random and not on brand for that youtuber, or that I know to be shady, I really stop trusting them because show me that it doesn't matter as long you pay them they will say anything...

17:30 A question I have would be what is the difference between a brand requesting for a creator to use 'collaboration' instead of 'sponsorship' and the creator 'naturally using the word collaboration?' If the word collaboration is swapped for sponsorship, and the switch is made private between the brand and the creator, does it really make a difference in its ethics? I don't really think there's a difference there- if its *really* a collaboration, fine, but if it is *actually a sponsorship* then the word sponsorship shouldn't be switched out, even if it was an 'organic choice' or wasn't meant to fool anyone since people can be tricked/confused even when it was an accident. Just a genuine question! Love your videos :)

I think - total expectation - when you hear sponsorship you associate with being paid to talk about X thing. Collaboration “implies” they worked together and both had a say on the final opinion and you can be lead to think as an organic exchange between the creator and the brand - I bet you even forget money exchanged hands… (this is how my brain interpreters it so I think it makes sense 😂)

For me personally i skip sponsored sections especially RUclipsrs who have one basically every single video it's even worse when the creator has a patreon that I know is doing well so I have no idea why they feel the need to advertise to me every single video

Personally, I prefer if the sponsorship has no relation to the content the creator makes, because otherwise I feel like they are not being honest about the brand that is sponsoring them. I am thinking of beauty creators and merit.

I 'fast forward' through the ads (I watch YT mostly on my PC, and dont do much other social media aside from FB on my phone). Theres a fashion influencer i follow who is sponsored by a game. it annoys me because theres literally no connection, but at the same time... I skip past it anyway. lol

Wow, when you mentioned Graham Stephan I had to laugh because I had completely forgotten that I liked watching his videos some years ago, particularly the “millionaire reacts” series where he critiqued people’s spending habits. In one of the videos, the guy he was critiquing said something about himself being Asian American, and Graham was like “I won’t comment on that because I don’t like to bring religion into my videos”… I absolutely could not take him seriously after that and I unsubscribed 😂 what a fool 😂

When you talk about ad revenue you dont mention demonitazation which is a especially for those whose full time job is youtube and if they cover any even silghty risky topics like queer stuff, political stuff or even some news shows, and that makes ad revenue unreliable and can make a sponsorship much more appealing and a reliable source of income. Also youtube takes a 45% cut of ad revenue which you probably already knew but you didint mention that, im not trying to hate, just pointing out the things I noticed

How do we report undisclosed advertising content?
I was just watching my favorite farm channel and she said a friend was going to evaluate her farm for what she can be doing better. He is clearly a rep for a brand of products called Redmond and saying “ we can send you this or that” to her. It totally was an ad in sheep’s clothing! No disclosure in writing or words. It was totally “how Redmonds products can correct things on your farm”. AND now I feel stupid because a week ago I found her video on a specific topic, she showed products she was using (lo and behold, Redmond) and I bought the product! I thought I was watching a real recommendation with no strings to a company… but now that I’ve watched more of her content equipped with knowledge from your channel, I realize I’ve been DUPED! 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

hmmm maybe it is because I'm not as exposed to it, but the FTX and finance stuff really went over my head... what I teally cant stand is BetterHelp sponsorships on ALL kinds of content.... everything seems to be a good excuse for saying you have mental issues these days and that is not good. I don't want to be listening to a history or politics essay or even a video about scams only for it to be interrupted by a BetterHelp ad that will mess up my head... I can tolerate anything else, but not that

For me personally, the thing that annoys me is when a video has a sponsorship and ads. I feel like it should be one or the other. I have basically never seen a sponsorship that felt genuine. Especially when it's every video - it feels very greedy.
To me there's a difference between mid roll ads, which we've had all our lives on TV, and a sponsorship. Especially the parasocial relationship a lot of people have with RUclipsrs (I hate the term content creator), it can feel like your best friend is personally recommending something to you.
Also as a person with a regular old 9-5 job, it really grinds my gears hearing people complain about how RUclips barely pays them. A decade ago people made videos basically for free, and now you have the great option to get paid! You don't have to sell out. But also, if you can't make full time videos with how much you're being paid, you're probably not ready to be a full time RUclipsr.
Sorry if I sound a bit snarky haha, I'm just so sick and tired of sponsorships!

I dont really see a problem with mobile game/online courses/streaming platforms/VPN sponsorships. I mean, yes they are still sponsorships but isnt it better than advertising **things**? Maybe not, but seems a bit crazy to me unsubscribing from someone bc they advertised june’s journey. 😂 I mean its a free to download app. I feel we can def make a scale of harm regarding the type of product that is being advertised so we can see more clearly who are the real “villains” creators - and i know this it a bit subjective, but there are some type of sponsors such as lottery/casino “”””games”” that are categorically making people lose their money to. Idk, just thinking

Last night I was watching a clean/declutter video from a creator I’ve never watched before, anyways, she said specific items were PR, then listed her Poshmark where her followers can purchase her discarded PR. I don’t know if you made a video coving that or not, and I don’t want to mention her by name (actually I would have to check my watch history because I don’t remember it now) but I totally checked her Poshmark and the PR items were there. I feel bad for watching the clean and declutter video, since that contributed to the problem, that’s not the point. I admit it! I find them relaxing! But I don’t agree with selling free PR……that’s just strange. Maybe you made a video on this prior to me finding your channel….? What are your thoughts on that?

On replay,I enjoy this channel. On this subject ,the people taking these sponsorships may be an issue however at what point do the viewers of these channels also take responsibility? If people sign up to what they believe is a banking system and do not check on security of placing money in these accounts? Even with traditional banking you need to read information provided and ask questions. As you state and have stated in previous videos we as a society do seem to over buy, however if we believe that so many people are financially struggling my question is who is buying? Sponsor"s would not be paying influencers ,or youtubers if they were not getting a benefit financially. Therefore, I am not sure this is only on content providers just like an actor on a perfume ad is not responsible for if people buy or not buy. Just my thoughts hope you have a lovely day!! From a new sub.

this is absolutely the case where creator and audience both have a role in overconsumption and buying the products mentioned in ads. I appreciate the addition as this video was geared towards discussing creators and didn't get to mention all components of the issue.

i mean i research things now, but i certainly didn’t when i was a naive 18-20 year old. i was never taught about doing things like that, i was always taught to take things at face value and trust the professionals. i wasn’t taught those skills or told that i should research things like banks or medical advice in the first place. i know better now that i’m older, but teens typically aren’t known for having good long term foresight, especially if they’re not taught critical thinking skills and discernment from the adults in their lives. we don’t know what we don’t know until we know better.

The unethical sponsorship that I still see a fair number of RUclipsrs doing (and the one that finally broke any trust whatsoever that I'd had in sponsorship arrangements up to that point) is BetterHelp.
It's frustrating because on one hand: yay, normalising therapy and making it (more) accessible and affordable! But on the other... here's a company that's had three FTC class action lawsuits brought against it and just agreed to pay millions of dollars in damages for selling their clients' mental health data (and I've heard anecdotal stories of them having allegedly outed clients who'd ticked the 'prefer an LGBTQ+ therapist', although I don't have a reliable source for that one) - and RUclipsrs are still recommending it
    😖
