Headed up to the property this weekend to spray Simazine into my frost seeded switch. Warmest winter I can remember here in WV and green up is already starting, six weeks ahead of normal. Hinge cutting is over as the sap is running like water. Glad I put the time in the last three months or I'd be severely behind the eight ball this spring.
I like to use this time of year to also get new stands or blinds assembled and ready for set up as soon as all spring planting is done. Good garage work to do while is still cold and wet out.
Still too much snow up here in northern Wisconsin to do much of anything yet. However it’s a great time to develop a good plan for the upcoming season! Looking forward to it next week! Thanks for all you do for us Jeff!
Do you think it is a bad idea to buy relatively cheaper land that doesn’t have as much timber value or hold deer and build your own from scratch? It seems to me like a good way to get things exactly the way you want for cheaper although I know that growth may take a few years. Thanks!
Have already planted my switchgrass and finished yesterday a 3 month clean up on my 5 acres. If I didn't have a grapple for my tractor it would be a year clean up.
Your videos are always so informative and helpful. I watch one of your videos that make me want to run out to make an improvement but then watch another that makes me want to be patient and plan it out more. Thank you so much for your information. It has made me think like a hunter. God bless you, your family and your team at WHS!
Thanks Jeff still 3 feet of snow here till April. Been picking logs and roots off my new food plot and marked out stand locations, cleared trails, cleared a campsite. Next step for me is spraying when green up finally comes.
I frost seeded switchgrass last spring following your system and had about 5% germination. i had a high % of hard seed. Do you think i should reseed or do you think it will come this year? Thanks for all your information!
Another great video with info Jeff! I am going to try your seed this year for switch! See you must have got something in your eye. Be careful my friend! Thanks for the info again looking forward to testing your seed.
Hey Jeff - love the channel and have learned so much. Any chance you do a video on tips to take full advantage of creeks? I have a creek that runs the entire length of my 50 acre tract.
Is there value in me frost seeding and spraying simonize into my existing first year screening switchgrass? It was no tilled drilled into prepared lanes last spring and had some descent growth
Been watching all your videos on hinge cutting can you still hinge cut If there’s buds starting on the trees or will it just kill the tree we’re in south western VA .Great I info as always Jeff! Looking forward to the chores!
I followed your advice from prior videos and already frost seeded switch and also sprayed simazine last week in southern ohio. Half of the seed was broadcast into a bean stubble field and the other half into a mowed weedy field. Will the simazine hurt the seed I just broadcast? …and can I still spray with gly and 2-4D in April?
Jeff, how can we get more information about the other WHS team members? A viewers know a lot about you and Dylan I would love to learn more about the others.
You are welcome Carlo! We are looking at a timeframe of around 2 weeks to ship to Canada. Wes and Jen had a meeting with UPS yesterday...they will make it happen 😊 In the meantime you can reach out to Wes who is our seed sales and service manager. weston.whs@gmail.com
Jeff love the content! I did some switchgrass planting last year in 2022. So this will be year 2. I have my simisine here and ready to spray my switch. My question is should I clip my switch and mow it back to like 12-18” tall before I spray with simazine or skip mowing and just spray (the stand of switch is pretty nice and thick and was like 4’ and laying over now). Thank you again!
Thanks for another great video packed with incredible information! I checked out the new seed site which is great and tried to use the contact page to send a message about a recent seed order, but it is difficult to know if the SEND button is working. It doesn't change the page at all. There is no 'message sent' page displayed.
Can I use Atrizine instead of simazine For my frost seeded switch grass? I currently use Atrizine for broadleaf control in my corn and have it on hand.
Rather than toxiv chemicals, you can till multiple times to manage weeds. Till in April, till again in August. Laying the roots out in August heat kills them nicely. I plant after the April till for spring feed and then turn under in August to improve nitrogen then plant again in August. You can get a couple seasons before you need to go through the process again.
You are destroying your topsoil, destroying soil biology, and risking wind and rain erosion every time you till. There is a way to both avoid chemicals AND no till and avoid destroying your soil (check out Carbonomics by Keith Berns) but you will need a tractor to pull a crimper to terminate cover crops. Jeff suggests chemicals because you don't need heavy equipment (read: cost) to plant foodplots/switch grass effectively. I am hoping to go to no (or limited) chemicals but I absolutely need a no till drill and crimper.
It's been working great for years. I add a fertilizer and the plots are awesome. Carcinogenic chemicals are a bad choice for humans and for the soil. Keep dumping them into aquifers and eventually people will be drinking it. Fact. Simazine is banned in Europe. Round-up is making people ill or killing them through cancer. Tilling like this has been done for thousands of years and continues to be done by farmers everywhere and we still have good soil to grow our food in. Unless you're a rep for these chemicals, your argument is quite silly. I'm done with this channel anyway after the "pick the chemical that will take the longest to kill you" comment. Pretty irresponsible. Arrogance through ignorance is what I call it.
@@tedrickabus2087 Years? Not much of a sample size. Here in Iowa we have lost almost 10 FEET of topsoil in the last CENTURY due to continual tillage, resulting in wind and water erosion. By Fertilizer, you mean the man-made (chemical processed) nitrogen? If you had an open mind and check out the many food plotters and farmers that are moving to no till/ cover crop who use minimal, if any, chemicals, you will find the best of both worlds. That is my goal. Both chemical use (including man-made fertilizers) AND tillage used for a century in agriculture is at fault for degraded and lost soil. Tillage for thousand of years? Remind me where I can find the pictures of 36 row discs pulled behind a massive tractor in the 1500's? I am with you on the chemicals and I working towards not needing them because my rotations and plantings provide it already. I would look in the mirror and drop the self-righteousness with your constant soil disruption (erosion and biological) and man-made nitrogen that ALSO runs off and creates issues.
I use cow poop. Just like the Amish and farmers have been using for thousands of years. How do you think people have grown crops before chemicals and heavy equipment. Your 36 disc comment of 1500 years ago is an embarrassment. 10 feet of topsoil? How do they even still have farms in Iowa? All of the dirt blew to Nebraska I guess, cuz they're still farming there as well. Toxic chemicals destroy soil biology more than tilling. Enjoy the cancer. I give up.
How does cow poop prevent erosion? If your not too arrogant to look up Keith Berns - carbonomics on RUclips, you will see I am not making up the Iowa soil comment. It is actually at an Iowa rest stop. My comment about the massive discing in the 1500s was clearly sarcasm that you obviously missed. Industrialization created massive machines that wreck the topsoil. Unless you are "tilling" with a horse and one plow, you have no legs to stand on. You'll look less foolish next time if you **actually** do a lick of research at all. I wont bother you with any more facts as your mind is already made up.
I really want to do the switchgrass thing, but I'm skittish about it because I don't fully understand the process or what situations/locations I'd want to plant it in and why. The far side of my property is a 10acre meadow, it's across the road from ag and surrounded on two sides by some highly diverse woods/brush. They pass through it all the time, but deer never hang out there even though I think they would if they had some cover. I'm unsure if this kind of situation is a good situation to do it.
Thanks Jeff for all the free knowledge you put out every week!!

Just what I was waiting for👍
Nice...enjoy it D and have a great day!
Thanks Jeff you always get me excited about the fall
Best channel on RUclips! Thank's for making my week Jeff, learned so much from you! You are a beast! (I know that name has been taken, lol)
Haha, well thank you and I hope it helps you out a lot! Love this month 😊 Really appreciate you!

Lime time 👍🏼
Great info, I better chug this coffee and get out there
Jeff, could you make a video discussion different hunting strategies and bow stand setups for different topographical features. Thanks
What do you think about red osier dog wood mixed in with cat tails? I have a 1/8 acre wet spot that is completely open to sunlight.
Thanks Jeff still 3 feet of snow here till April. Been picking logs and roots off my new food plot and marked out stand locations, cleared trails, cleared a campsite. Next step for me is spraying when green up finally comes.
Should or can I spray Simazine on 2nd year switch that has some weeds in it? Thanks for all the videos and keep up the good work.
You sure should Robert!
Lots to do, seems like I spent most of Feb. away from the farm work! Might have to burn some vacation days for some saw time
I frost seeded switchgrass last spring following your system and had about 5% germination. i had a high % of hard seed. Do you think i should reseed or do you think it will come this year? Thanks for all your information!
Thanks Jeff!
Good info. I like to shed hunt and put mineral blocks out by months end.
Another great video with info Jeff! I am going to try your seed this year for switch! See you must have got something in your eye. Be careful my friend! Thanks for the info again looking forward to testing your seed.
What about spreading mulch of woodchips over small areas and then planting?
Awesome stuff as always

My WHS Northern Switch Blend arrives tomorrow!!

We have about an inch of snow. But will be gone by the end of the day.Was going to frost seed clover🤔
I would do that at the end of the day D! Sounds really good ..

Great content. Love the way this helps build out the calendar! Q: is there ever a case for using fencing to guide deer movement?
Thanks!

Morning Jeff! When do you guys typically take your stands down? Thinking about maybe taking the stand down but leaving the steps
Soon Drew!

Can you simazine over first year switch to frost seed more seed in thin spots?
Thanks for another great video packed with incredible information! We have a heavily traveled corridor (bench) by the river. Is a waterhole appropriate at that stand?
It is if they are coming from dy bedding and the waterholes is an easier spot for them to stop at
Can I use Atrizine instead of simazine

You sure can Jason!
Anyone have advice on what product to use to lube stand screws so don’t squeak nor smell? Thks
R u a believer in spraying S/G with Quinclorac
what is the best chemical to use for hack and squirt for cedars?
Your thoughts on phragmites
Hey Jeff do yall have give aways and do yall give away bows. I've got someone contacted me saying I have won a bow from yall

Can you please make a shirt that says “The Bottom Line Is….” Lol😂
Oops I missed January/February in Northern WI 😂
Kinda have to do a lot of those chores in March/April because of the deep thick snow

Hi Dan! We have a EZ planting switchgrass video coming out on Sunday 3/12...it will help you out a lot I think!
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 I'm definitely looking forward to that! Thanks!
So easy and yet so often neglected..wear some nitrile gloves at a minimum with chemicals, especially while mixing.
First?
I think so?!
Deciding which will kill you the least fastest is not a great strategy. Natural solutions like vinegar can be as effective and non-toxic to humans.
