Same also party bc of my actual age and the fact that I look younger than I am. With most theater places around my city it’s rare that I get anything other than ensemble. I look like a teen and could pull it off but I’m older and most the time they try to choose teens to play teen characters
I get frustrated with that, because I want to bust out and prove I can handle the responsibilities of a bigger part - just to understudy and go on would be equally satisfying. That's what happens with me a majority of the time is I'm in the ensemble - fine for some shows, tough for others.
I finally realized my cast type was “hot and dumb” after playing Karen in mean girls and many people asking me if I was dumb in real life after playing so many bimbo characters so well.
Very unsubtle as a humblebrag. I would call it a straight up brag to be honest. "My casting type is that I'm hot :)" okay, you seem like an unsympathetic person
Even though I love acting, I think this making me realise my biggest problem is I just don't like my casting type because I already feel like people see me as that in the first place i.e. chubby, slightly naive, cutesy and eccentric. With that being said, it does help my self esteem because I now don't think I'm as untalented as I previously did.
I’ve been a stage manager for a youth production that tries to do a yearly production. They have done 3 performances they brought me own for the last 2. Since the 2nd one they needed a stage manager who was close to their venue. I lived close so it worked. I was stage manager again this year. It can be a lot sometimes but it is also very rewarding in its own way.
@@maem7462 I 100% agree about stage managing being rewarding but a lot. I did all three of my shows productions last year, and it was definitely a lot, but I have no regrets
I would say I’m a “quirky ingenue” but a lot of people tend to cast me as “the child.” One of the last roles I was called back for was Columbia in Rocky Horror and I did get cast in that show but not as that. A lot of people would cast me as Carrie in Carrie, Little Sally in Urinetown, and Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. I’ve definitely grown a lot since the start of my journey as an actor and I hope I can grow more into my type as well as see what type I grow into in the future.🙌🏻🙌🏻
I don't even live in the same continent as Backstage, so it doesn't work for me, and yet here I am not skipping and watching EVERY ad Kat makes about them bc she makes them fun and entertaining
this video is so encouraging and SO helpful, I just wish I didn't struggle so much with like. Actually objectively viewing myself and yada ya because figuring out my casting type is so wild bc like. I do a wide variety of projects and struggle to notice any particular trends in any of the pieces I do aside from in shakespeare I play a lot of yappers(my first big Shakespeare role was Helena in a midsummer nights dream)
I would love to play Helena. One year for class one assignment was to do a soliloquy. The teacher said you can either choose one yourself or I can choose for you just let me know. I had her choose for me and she chose Helena’s for me. I really like how she’s written. I did read and watch a movie version of that story long ago and remember some stuff. I should probably re read it or something. I want to fully remember.
It seems my casting type is “Dumb tall man,” or “Evil King of the Fairies”. I had a lot of fun with the latter….funny enough, I’m a baritone, but I always get cast in Tenor roles, which poses a problem when it comes to having to hit high tenor notes. My voice very much prefers being lower
This is super helpful! I'm 38 but I'm generally cast as 25-35 (I think because of my scrawny build?), I identify as female, and my roles have never been unintelligent, poor, or maternal. So that's something! But otherwise, I really struggle with figuring out my type. I've been cast as reserved or outgoing, good or evil or somewhere in between, comedic or dramatic, and many different professions. My last 4 roles were a stepsister in Cinderella, Elinor in Sense and Sensibility, Vera in And Then There Were None, and Cinderella in Cinderella (and these were not the only two times I did that show, haha). These are four very different types. I can belt or sing legit, I can sing mezzo or low soprano roles, and I'm not a strong dancer. I'd love any guidance about types, because again, I'm 38 and I have absolutely no idea :)
just getting back into theater for the first time since high school (20+ years ago), I'm average height but I'm a power lifter, I have a friend who's first reaction to me when we met was "you look like you could rip someone in half" other friends see me as a protective dad/ teddy bear, personally I've always wanted to be a villain, I think they have the best songs. Have no idea what that paired with a strong bari-tenor voice will get me but I'm ready to find out once auditions start up in my area. Thanks for your content, it's really informative.
The roles I have always wanted to play are the female leads, the ingenues. But as I've actually started getting called back for roles in recent years, it's almost always character parts. I've been called back but not cast as Wardrobe in Beauty and the Beast, Mrs. Phelps in Matilada, Alice in The Adams Family, Lucy and the voice teacher in On the Town, Scuttle in Little Mermaid (they were playing around with gender on some of the roles- also sang for Chef Louie and the eels), and Mrs. Winthrop in The Secret Garden. I've played a maid 3 times! Twice as Mrs. Brill in Mary Poppins and then Brigit the maid in Ragtime. I was also called back but not cast for both Golde and Fruma Sarah in Fiddler on the Roof. And I've actually played Grandma Tzietel in another production several years ago. My biggest challenge right now is struggling to accept that at nearly 43 years old, I've aged out of most of my dream roles. 😩
I’ve mostly have ensemble roles but the one role I got was a character that is a little mischievous but kind. With callbacks if I am called back for a specific character it’s usually either a somewhat mischievous character or a more mature and responsible one. Sometimes the mature ones have a bit of cockiness to them.
My casting type is a mom or a villain. I realized that cause I noticed all the roles I've ever played were villains/brats or mothers. I'm auditioning for Ida in honk! in a week and I'm soooo exited.
My casting type is 18-24,23, female, hourglass figure, dark haired, dark/light skin, and I'm 5'2, mezzo soprano, got cast as the Lady in the Box/Emily's teacher in Our Town in 2019 when I was in high school. Diana Ross is my celebrity Doppleganger, so is Chakà Khan.
Currently a High-School theatre student and my casting type is usually either comedic relief or the smarmy charming villain. I’m hopefully auditioning for Emmet in Legally Blonde soon so I might have to work on a couple of these 😭
I've been acting for a while and for a while I was just put as a bunch of different characters but now im starting to fall into the "female love interest" which tbh is always very awkward since I used to be cast as smaller funnier characters but then suddenly started getting bigger rolls and the stress began...
I tend to be cast as older people. I've played a few middle aged/very old men, as well as a number of rich people. I've also played Gaston, which isn't much like any of those other ones. I think my cast type might characters with stature, though I'm really not sure.
My casting type is apparently "overbearing Mom" - the two most recent roles I've been offered were Baptista Minola in The Taming of the Shrew, and Angie Sullivan in The Wedding Singer.
My type seems to be mischievous young child.😂 I played Louisa VonTrapp and Debbie Wilkinson from Billy Elliot in a row and know auditioning for little red riding hood in into the woods. I guess we’ll see!
I'd add to not get discouraged if your casting type aren't in your dream shows or dream roles. Directors cast against type all the time and for less professional companies they'll usually take your abilities and talents into consideration first.
My casting type is The Antagonist Jerk. I've played from age 15 to 50, though I have to wear boatloads of makeup to play the 50 year old. I'm a young and very professional academia woman, but I'm cast as the antagonist who either has strange style or proffessional style. I'm cast as the actress or the wannabe talent. Sometimes the famous producer/enterpreneur.
As a younger actor who looks more mature for my age (im 13 and curvy and stuff lol) my first audition ever i was cast as a disney princess, (wild) and then as a side main character friend character, then royalty two more times. then i played wadsworth in clue. SO, i always thought i was royalty, but taking a further look, im not sure anymore lol
Well for a while my casting type was emo’s and villains. It was all I would get casted as. Which was quite the surprise considering I’m a blonde haired, blue eyed soprano who my friends refer to as “too sweet for her own good” haha. However I played Cady in Mean Girls and I’ve now started getting cast as more bubbly happy characters. BUT NOW I’m playing a 10/11 year old brat at the age of 16/17…. So now I’m just confused haha
Well, I have played a few authority figures, such as popes, kings, and judges. I have played lower-status characters, such as servants and nameless soldiers. I have played an incompetent assassin. I have played a charming playboy. I have played a ghost pirate. I have played a frustrated playwright. And last time I played a very positive and playful pizza baker who dreamed of being a famous actor, and in the play-within-the-play I (or the pizza baker) played a femme fatale. I'm not sure I see any big patterns, but with a few exceptions, most of the characters I've played weren't very bright. Also, when it comes to look-alikes, the list of celebrities I have been told I look like includes Rowan Atkinson, Freddie Mercury, Michael Peña, and Philipp Kirkorov.
I don’t know, haha, here are the roles I’ve played: (I’m a soprano girl) Moana - Chief Ancestor 2 Into The Woods - Rapunzel’s Prince Frozen - Weselton & Anna’s Understudy Mean Girls - Cady Heron Newsies - Crutchie
My casting type is angsty teen characters. All but one of the characters I have ever played (even in youth theatre) have been teens. I’m 31, but I’m currently playing a 15 year old. 😂💀 Also, all of the last 3 roles I have been cast in are gay. So I guess angsty gay teen is pretty much the vibe. Haha.
mines been angsty teen lately. ive played janis in mean girls and percy jackson (although it was in a showcase). i also dont think my casting type is related to gender either (im a younger performer and there isnt many males in my program). i rlly thought it was mom or old lady (it was 2 shows lol) but maybe that was js because i do youth theatre and i was taller than a lot of the cast lol.
I'm at a certain time in my life when playing more mature authoritarian characters is best. The father in I Never Sang For My Father. The Bishop in Les Miz. Javert or even Val Jean even. My dream role is Tevye in Fiddler. In reality, what I am well suited for, due to recent knee surgery, would be FDR in ANNIE. Older, balding, uses a wheelchair to get around. (literally I do so the role is perfect for me!)
So here's my problem, I understand my casting type for Equity shows, but for non union shows where they are casting younger in roles that are my type, it's harder. What would you suggest I do?
I think it can be good for that. I have heard that crested your own website to showcase that can also be good. I know a lot bc ppl use stuff like wix to create their own website. I know I’ve heard of another website that’s good for actors, dancers, and singers. I can’t remember the name
Sorry, but-I don't really understand the assignment, clearly, as I see myself as an Ugggleee stepsister type, even though I've NEVER BEEN CAST IN ANYTHING LIKE THAT! xD
All of the actual roles I’ve played that aren’t ensemble (I’m a counter tenor) (ish) The little mermaid: flounder Annie: Rooster Junie b jones: Mr. Scary Beauty and the Beast: Lefou Idk what that says about me lol😭😭😭
Hey guys, does anyone have any advice for my audition for the Addams Family? I'm going for Alice Beineke and it's for my middle school play. I've been in a few performances before and I take vocal lessons so I don't mind a bit of a challenging vocal piece. Does anyone have any ideas on what songs I could sing or any advice on how to act or portray her character?

Thank you so much for this video! I think it’s amazing how encouraging to new (and experienced) performers 💕 Ilysm
Sorry a typo 😭 I meant “ it’s amazing how encouraging you are to performers”
