HEY THEATRE FRIENDS! It's been a minute since I've told an embarrassing #MusicalTheatre fail #Storytime on the internet, so I thought I would be a Good Little Theatre Actor™ and talk about the ABSOLUTE Worst Musical I have ever been in.
I know that might come as a little bit of a surprise, but hear me out. I try to be a very positive and I try to live by the “if you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say it all” rule. But I think it might have seemed like I’ve only had incredible, beautiful, #Broadway -worthy experiences and that I’ve never had a tough time in a show
    Which is simply not true
I think everyone in this industry has had experiences that were better than others and in that case I think you A) hopefully get to learn from that experience & B) Get to look back and laugh about it.
I want you guys to know that if you have a bad day at rehearsal or a bad performance, or just a bad production- it’s okay! I’ve had that too! So that’s what we’re doing today! In fact, QOTD: Whats the worst show you’ve ever been in? Tell us about it in the comments below!

When I was in a production of Shrek, the fire alarm went off during "I Know It's Today". When the cast, crew, and audience were sent outside to wait for the all clear, the cast decided to sing "All Star" while everyone was waiting to go back in. Slowly, the crew and audience joined in and we were all just screaming the song near the side of the building. At first I was upset when the fire alarm went off during the show, but now it's one of my funniest theatre moments!

Something similar happened when my brother was in Shrek. It was in the middle of Freak Fly when the fire alarm went off. When we got back into the theater, the show went on as usual. The best part was when Farquad had his speech in the wedding scene he referenced the fire alarm, I think he said “We have the loudest and brightest fire alarms in the land”.

Worst show: In theatre camp we did West Side Story. Well let’s just say the director and stage manager thought it was a good idea to pit the kids playing Jets and Sharks against each other for real. It was to have us “do our best” and “make the feud realistic”. All it really started was real fights and lots of people in tears and a fist fight. The worst show for me was a production of a play called The Ever After (basically, it's a talk show with Disney princesses/characters). I joined in about a week before the performance since it was a grade wide thing, everyone in the grade had to do it, and I transferred there late in the year. I had a couple lines, which I got memorized in a couple days. The leads, however, were working on the show since December (the performance was in early June) and still didn't know their lines. And to top it all off, the Host (the main lead with the most lines) didn't even show up along with other leads so the actors from the other performance had to grab a script and fill in the missing roles. That was about four years ago. And it was my first time being in a show.

This in small-town Minnesota, where there were zero black people and a small number of Hispanics. Like Hairspray, that musical uplifts the worth of black people and has an anti-racism message embedded. I have since learned that the unacceptability of blackface doesn't depend on context. It sounds like your Amber, in real life, was a lot the character Amber.

My entire senior year of high school was HORRIBLE. Three shows:
    Show 1: Marley and Scrooge
Never heard of it? Yeah. It was a version of A Christmas Carol written by a local writer who had no business writing a musical. The songs were horrible and some were nearly impossible to sing in a way that sounded good. Not to mention the lyrics. It was all just horribly written. The cast was good for the most part, but Scrooge couldn’t sing and then Belle had to drop due to a concussion and there was understudy drama. THEN the school’s choir was forced into the show but didn’t attend rehearsal until dress rehearsal. Non of them wanted to be there, they couldn’t remember blocking and couldn’t learn any choreo so they were like a bunch of dead lumps on stage who didn’t act and on top of that, our chior was t even good so they didn’t help the music in any way. Awful.
    Show 2: Alice in Wonderland
It would have been fine... except for the fact that one of my friends had told everyone for over a year that our director told her she would be alice... and then she didn’t get alice... that was was A THING. Everyone was awful to our alice, I was the only one in her corner (odd because I played the Queen of Hearts). Plus it was a boring show to be in because everyone except for the Cheshire Cat and Alice were only in one scene so it felt pointless. I literally wouldn’t start my makeup until places and still had 15 minutes to chill before I went on, and I was one of the larger characters!
Show 3: As You Like It
Drama and essential tantrums lead to this show being double cast. I was A Cast Rosalind, my favorite role ever, so it really sucks that the experience was so bad. B cast had a bad attitude throughout the production and didn’t put in any effort, the way the performance dates were split was unfair (we drew straw for who would get opening and who would get closing. My cast ended up with the opening. So we got a Thursday and a Friday. B cast got a Friday and Saturday. Attendance was so uneven and it was upsetting). B Cast constantly talked about how they hated the show and were bored by the characters and those of us in A cast were working our butts off and loved the show. B cast Rosalind and Cecilia never got off book and skipped major portions of their monologues. The casts were in constant toxic competition and the director realized he made a mistake and ended up taking a hands-off approach to the whole show, so we almost ended up self-directing.
It was such an awful year.

I don’t think I’ve ever been in a “worst” show. I think that are definitely good things and bad things in each show. If I had to pick one that truly tested me it would be my high school production of Guys and Dolls. It started off great; I had auditioned and ended up getting a call back for the lead (my first call back ever), and while I didn’t end up as Sarah, my choir teacher had said she and the director had cast me as a missionary member because they like my vocal strength. Two weeks in I sprained my ankle and had to be on crutches, which worked surprisingly well with my part. But I excluded me for being in the Havana scene as well as “Sit Down, You’re Rocking the Boat.” I had done makeup for all of our shows and had to stand for long periods of time on one foot with just my crutches to support me, and I ended up cleaning up the green room every night as I hopped on one foot. On our very last performance, my friend Craig suggested that we add a new category to our end of year Drama awards. He decided he wanted to add the category for “Most Dedicated Cast Member” and promptly put the girl who played Adelaide as the only person to vote for in the category. I was so shocked and offended. Of course, I worked hard and pushed myself even with my injury out of the goodness of my heart and my dedication to the production, but I was at hoping for a thanks at some point. No one every did. I learned that I don’t need to work my self to the bone to please people who won’t appreciate the thought and effort I put in.

    • @alexwishoun9077
      @alexwishoun9077 4 года назад +18

Also, during that show there is the moment where Sarah and the missionary members (one of which I played) were supposed to come out and sing “Follow the Fold.” There were 3 other missionary characters and because I was on crutches, I had been relying on my fellow members to let me know when our scene was coming up so I could rest and I’ve my ankle.
At some point, as me and the two other missionary members were in the green room signing posters for the rest of the cast, the director slams open the door and proceeds to tear us a new one because we had just missed our scene. She was screaming that K (who played Sarah, and A (who was the other missionary member not with us) were the only ones on stage, singing follow the fold with two voices instead of the five that were intended. She also says that A waited for 5 minutes for the rest of us to show before she proceeded to go on by herself. I tried to explain that I had asked the other missionary members to let me know when we were supposed to go on because of my ankle. The director refused to listen. She went on about how she was so proud for A for doing her part.
From that I learned not to rely on anyone else but myself to know my cue. Also, to know when to stand up for myself. I had quietly tried to explain what happened and got dismissed right away. I wish I had stood up and demanded to know why A didn’t bother to come get us if she knew it was close to our cue. Why did she instead choose to go out by herself when she knew it would make the show look bad if there was only one missionary member out on stage. If she truly cared about the production she would have noticed how close it was getting to our cue and let us know so we could all go on to perform, instead of using the opportunity to make us a d the show look bad.

Hazeltuft No, thankfully my dad’s job got relocated and we moved. I tried to keep in contact with the friends I had made, but I quickly found out that they weren’t my friends. That “friend” Craig got mad at me about something and sent me a two page letter about how I was “a soul sucking leech” and explained that nobody actually liked me, they just thought I was going to commit suicide (I had depression in high school but never to the point where I had thought about or planned to do that), and I asked another person I thought was my friend she explained that it was “kind of” true. I realized that I was in such a toxic environment and never really spoke to anyone from the school again. I’ve made it a goal of mine to avoid anyone I went to high school this. I definitely regret not standing up for myself, but in hindsight I don’t think they would have ever have taken the time to listen.

Hazeltuft Thank you. Things are going well. I’m working on my depression and realizing my self worth. I have a great job where I’m appreciated for the things I do. I’m working on putting myself out in social situations in the hopes of gaining true friends.
I did do theatre at my new school. The school that did Guys and Dolls was inclusive in the fact that every person who audition got in, no matter what (our production of Beauty and the Beast had 32 performers) and some shows required every person to have at least one line. The new school was much more up to par with the real world. Spots for shows were competitive and the productions were high level. I was only there for my senior year and there were only two shows I could participate in. I auditioned for both and while I got a call back for the fall play, Fools, I didn’t get cast in that or our spring musical “Les Miserables.” I did costumes though and did join in the perform when we went to the National Performing Arts conference at Walt Disney World. We ended up performing a melody of Les Mis on the main stage and took home 5 awards. We also took it to the Bobby G Awards in Denver and won several awards as well.
While I wasn’t able to perform, it was still an amazing program and I’m grateful I was able to help out in any way I could. Actually, a couple of those “friends” from my old school came to see our production of Les Mis and were blown away. It was so satisfying to see the shock and awe on their faces.

The worst show I’ve ever been in is the one i’m currently in, our final performance is tomorrow (Sunday). The show is Mamma Mia, and our director, who was great for the fall play, started getting worse for Mamma Mia. She didn’t do her research on people she hired, which ended with us having a tech director who had to be fired after one rehearsal for making inappropriate comments and also we hired someone who doesn’t do set design to do set design (they quit on us). After this, our director decided to take her frustrations out on the cast/company of the show, ie yelling at our poor drama club president and one of our Sophies (the show is double cast), not to mention various other company members. It was so bad that six separate people went to the principal about the situation.

QOTD, but with a twist: this year I was in Aladdin at my school, and we were convinced the entire season that it was going to be awful. Aladdin didn't know his lines, there were so many costume mishaps, and nobody had any faith in their ability. Nobody was enjoying the rehearsals at all, which is very counterproductive. It wasn't until opening night that we realized: Woah, this is actually really good. People really pulled it together during tech week. Closing night was about a week ago and a lot of us cried; I've never cried at one of my shows before. I met great people and had a great time. We were told by our director and our teachers that it was one of the best shows our school ever put on. So, our worst show turned into our best. Have faith and fun in your shows everyone, because they might turn out better than you think! 💕

The worst show I’ve ever been in? Buckle up, it’s rough. So I spent two years writing a script, and I finally had the chance to put it on. Then the directors decided it would be fun to not give me any credit for writing the script and treat me like garbage. Yay. To make matters worse, one of the directors decided to go on a cruise in the middle of rehearsals. Rehearsals were at her house. And then tech week hits. The crew was underprepared, and the choreographer wouldn’t stop yelling. We had three actors end up in the hospital that week, me included. I SPENT A NIGHT IN THE HOSPITAL IN THE MIDDLE OF TECH. I ALMOST DIED. One of the others was fine, and the other did the show in a wheelchair, until she got rolled into a set piece during a matinee and had to go to the hospital again and a stage manager had to step in and do her part. I was still recovering from a staph infection and performing a very demanding role (Narrator). I have no idea how any of us survived.

I wouldn't exactly call this my worst musical ever, but there were definitely some moments. Highschool performance of Les Mis. Our Marius and Valjean kept skipping classes to work in the theater building sets. As such, each of them got detentions for it but were able to get their detentions with our music teacher/conductor. So while everyone is rehearsing music, Valjean is sitting on a stool in the corner turned away face the wall. Also, we hadn't been able to fully run through our show until opening night due to weather on the night of our dress rehearsal. I missed my cue to come down a set of stairs and move a table, since we hadn't run through. So, two of my costars had to carry it without knowing where to place it. Valjean comes running from his last scene in The Docks and immediately slams into this table. We hear a slam over the mic followed by the sophmore playing him just quietly going, "Oh, shit." Opening night, Javert goes to do his suicide scene but overestimates the distance to the crash pad. He twists to the side too far and sprains his ankle, winds up using his sword a cane for the rest of the shows. We had several quick changes, which basically meant sprinting across the backstage area to the dressing rooms wearing nothing but base layers (tights, tank tops, spanks.) This is a little bit hard to not get anxious doing when the guy playing the foreman is a little too into his role and stares at every girl changing for their next scene as they run past.

Pit Musician here - worst show I've ever done was somewhat recently. The show was originally an off-off-broadway show from maybe 10 years ago but was based on very famous source material. The script only called for 8 actors but they could only get 7. Lots of other poor quality things from the acting, singing, and technical elements. Was told going into this that I wouldn't be getting paid but I thought I'd be okay with that, but the show wasn't fun and I just ended up being miserable the whole time. Lesson learned - don't work for free.

Dear Theatre Community at Large. Pay your talent. That includes the Orchestra. If you cant afford the required personnel, you better be knowledgeable about Orchestration. I was in a EQUITY show that used canned music and it was so embarrassing that a women left her inheritance to the theatre to never have that happen again. I was in a production of Assassins but only 7 musicians and it didn’t work. It was thin and wasn’t appropriate. BUT I saw a production of Sweeney Todd that was just a piano and violin and really good sound design and baller musicians and I was floored at how satisfying it was. My show from hell was a production of David Ives translation of The Heir Apparent. Not only was the rehearsal period 6 WEEKS of 6 days a week. But my character isn’t even in the 1st act but the Director demanded we all be present for every rehearsal. It was non union so rehearsals aren’t paid. Then the director was a misogynist, Italian and had to be banned from coming backstage after the second night because he screamed at a woman because she stepped on a line and the timing was off, during INTERMISSION!!!!!! Like such a fucking nightmare. The Artistic Director handled it extremely well and protected us. And he would just give feed back like, “NO, Not like that”. And that was it. Like, happy sad grouchy glad bro give me an adjective to go off of to point me in a direction. THE FUCK! Not even to mention that he cut three pages of my dialogue , and bro this is licensed, you cant just cut out a whole ass scene like its Shakespeare. I was terrified of what might happen if word got out. And then it turns out that Ives is really fun to read, and it’s hilarious, but with out the script in your hand, it is so Varsity Level Vocab that the audience got lost. I had to google at least 8 words for myself. And I was reading it. Whew! But, I got to make people laugh and it seriously fills me soul.

Worst musical I've ever been in: Let me just tell you that double-casted shows are NEVER a good idea, there's always uneven attendance and rivalry, it sucks. My middle school did You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown double-casted, and I ended up being in all of the shows because I was Woodstock (most disappointing role I've ever played) and the other one quit half-way because they hated it. It was like I was the frantic peace-maker, trying to get the two casts to get along. The Cast B Charlie Brown was a significantly better actor, but was super obnoxious and practically bullied the Cast A Charlie Brown. I tried to be friends with both, but it wasn't working out.
Opening night, we're 5 minutes to curtain and I find Cast B Charlie Brown threatening Cast A Charlie Brown (who is about to go onstage) that he'd better not screw anything up or everyone will hate him and the show will be ruined. Must have made him nervous, because in the lunch scene, where he has a long monologue all by himself, he freezes before the last two lines. I whisper the line from the wing, but he can't hear me, and it looks like he's beginning to panic. Which means we're all panicking. We tell the stage crew to just close the curtains, it's only two lines, but all of a sudden, Cast B Charlie Brown is there, saying to the stage crew, "Don't you dare close the curtains! *director's name* will never let you do anything again!" He then motions for the onstage Charlie Brown to come off stage, and he puts on the yellow shirt and GOES OUT HIMSELF! Idk what the heck he was thinking, the two of them look absolutely NOTHING alike. He doesn't even say the two lines, only one of them, and the scene ends. Cast A Charlie Brown is on the verge of crying, we're all telling him that it wasn't his fault and that he can still do it, and there's still the rest of the show to prove himself. I felt horrible.
Other Charlie Brown comes back, ready to scream at him, and the rest of us kind of stand around him and tell the other one to leave. "Excuse me?" he says. "I am obviously the only actual actor here, and you all are the ones who need to leave." They leave, but I stay. I'm very short, and I'm in a yellow tutu, so I probably didn't look at all threatening. He said "you're not even in the next scene, you stupid little b*tch, get out of my way. You shouldn't even be here, you're not near good enough for anything." I say, "I'm not going anywhere, I AM in this next scene!" I proceed to, in 30 seconds, recite EVERY SINGLE LINE OF EVERY CHARACTER IN THE NEXT SCENE. That was literally all I did backstage, memorize everything in case something happened. He's stunned, and I say, "You didn't even say all the right lines right there! You had no right to purposely show everyone in the audience that you're better, because you're NOT better! Making everyone feel like dirt and bullying other cast members is NOT better. So shut up, and get out of MY way, because you're supposed to enter on the other side of the stage for the next scene." He walks away. One of the proudest moments of my life. Other Charlie Brown and I become friends after that.
There were a lot of other disasters that night, such as our Cast A Schroeder throwing up backstage (he was sick but still came) and Cast B Schroeder had to do everything in a half-backstage-black half-Linus costume, meanwhile people are crying for some reason, I'm trying to force down a panic attack because I have igemophobia (fear of people throwing up, I know, very inconvenient) and suddenly Sally is saying I have to carry a blanket across the stage. Cast B Charlie Brown hid Cast A Charlie Brown's blanket, and everyone found it on the wrong side of the stage, and the curtains didn't close until later.
I take a deep breath and skip across the stage in the background during Linus's monologue, grab the blanket and skip back. I look to the audience and realize everyone is staring at me, waiting for something to happen, so I look back and forth between the blanket I'm holding and Linus's blanket, shrug, and skip offstage. I could hear my heartbeat in my ears, it was terrifying, but everyone hugged me and said that I did it perfectly! That was pretty cool.
I later nail my Suppertime dance with Snoopy and improvise a little at the end by jumping off the doghouse into a split. Director told me later I shouldn't have acted while carrying the blanket, I should've just grabbed the blanket and ran, but I disagree because I think that would have looked bad. Everyone also gets a talk that they need to be nicer to everyone, especially our lead role. I smile, thinking she's talking about the poor Charlie Brown who was hated for a while, but no, she's talking about the BULLY Charlie Brown who claimed all of us were BULLYING HIM. There were good and bad parts to that show, but I mean, it made a good story, if you're still reading all the way down here. That was fun to type, I like telling people about this particular musical. Thanks for reading! xD

Wish I could laugh about it. The first time I did Addams Family when I was 19. Was not happy or fun at all. It was a student theater company, and I played a soldier ancestor. The director made lists ranking people on talent and attractiveness, and shared it with his friends in the cast and they proceeded to make fun of me. Luckily, I did Addams again as Lucas and my best friend as Wednesday. Great experience.

Worst show: The Wiz. With barely any diverse cast members. And the lead couldn't sing or act. It was a cruel casting choice.

Technically there’s 2 but this story’s first. Beauty and the beast: Role~Narrator
Usually, the shows my theatre company do are about 30-50 people in all but in this show we had 90 people and we barley got anything done and everyone was always screaming and ditching rehearsal (to be fair, i did it once too, i hid in the bathroom for an hour so i wouldn’t have to go rehearse. I also had really bad anxiety about loudness at the time)

I don’t really have a “worst show I was in” story due to my high school director having very high standards for her shows. But, I do have a lot of “worst musical drama” stories.
    1) One supporting lead got a girl pregnant and missed a bunch of rehearsals which made us question if he was going to be there opening night or at all.
    2) People talked behind others backs during a Beauty and the Beast production to the point where the President, VP, and Treasurer had an emergency meeting to say “stop it!”
    3) During Shrek the Musical, (I was not a part of it since I had graduated but my sister’s friend was, giving her the drama) a majority of the leads didn’t feel like they needed to listen to the director and did their own thing except for my sister’s friend. Almost everyone but her was called into the director’s classroom after school and got a torn apart relentlessly for their behavior.

One of my directors (who wasvery smart and a great teacher) said "the audience will not forgive you if they cannot hear or understand you." Truer words have never been spoken.
Also I have been in a dress rehearsal when the fire alarm went off cause the fog machine was directly below it. Fortuneately that didnt happen during the show but there was a lot of confusion. My poor baby brother who was in his first show was wailing cause he couldnt find my dad (who was in it) and it was kind of cold outside cause it was a passion musical for Easter. Besides that it was a good time.

Re: Romantic relationships with cast members. I was taught by an older actor about the "8-week rule". If you feel romantically attracted to a fellow cast member, keep it a platonic friendship until the show closes or, if a film, until the wrap party. After 8 weeks have passed, call them and ask them to lunch. If the spark is still there, act on it. Most likely the spark will not be there anymore but you'll still have a friend, just not a lover.

Worst show I’ve been in was my high school’s production of 9 to 5. To start off that year was particularly bad for snow in my areas so we were constantly having rehearsals cancelled. Our leads didn’t show up half the time so we weren’t able to block so many scenes until about a week before tech week. Becuse of the office setting of the show wee had to put tables and desks on wheels and those were always braking especially during our performances. By the time out tech week came around our Mr. Hart finally showed up but didn’t know the words to the one song he had and we hadn’t fully run through the whole show yet. All of us were convinced the show was going to be a disaster but then our performance dates were snowed out and with the way my school scheduled things we couldn’t have the show until a month after it was originally scheduled. When we finally had our show each night something went really wrong. Definitely wasn’t a fun experience but it was a lesson.

about 2 years ago I was in my school's production of mary poppins jr. and it was a living nightmare
the dance choreographer was a nightmare to work with. she created choreography that required meticulous planning and coordination which was lacking in the cast and a week before the actual after all the technical aspects had been sorted out she wanted to incorporate 10 more dancers into step in time which is the show-stopping number but it would require 10 more brooms to be purchased + half the characters she wanted to use were in the next scene so the director had to intervene. she never finished dances so we'd be halfway through one and then we'd start learning another. she also was given a megaphone (god knows who gave it to her) and she would use it all the time to shout at us. she was so bad at doing anything that me and my friends were sat backstage for almost an hour because it took her so long to teach a section of a easy dance. the ensemble were at wit's end with her because it was days before the performances, no dances were properly finished and she sat the whole cast down, ranted at us for not working hard and then walked out. we literally all just sat there going wtf because we'd been working so hard that we were losing sleep and breaking down so... anyway she came back and I made a joke that she'll change all of it an hour before. this was worst case scenario for all of is and we definitely thought it wasn't going to happen but lo and behold while we all went out to get food the bumblebees for a spoonful of sugar were left behind doing new choreography o.O. there was a weird love triangle that occurred between 3 of the leads and it was so very strange. one of the ensemble fainted during rehearsals because we weren't allowed a break by the dance choreographer and I ran to the other side of the school down 3 flights of stairs to the school nurse. my friend who was playing the bird woman almost got her role stolen as the other one wanted two nights when she was clearly better and the same girl did the same to me the last year and then did the same to my other friend the next year. all in all it was okay. if my mental health was in a better place and there was different choreographer it would have been amazing.
The year before this we did Oliver! which was good but there's an anecdote too good not to share.
the guy playing the undertakers son hadnt turned up. the performance started and it was about 10 minutes before he was supposed to go on he shows up. the director has a go at him and he goes and gets changed. I go and sit in the changing room and everyone was saying he was under the influence so we go and tell the director and at this point it's too late to do anything so he goes on. problem was oliver never left the stage so we never told him before the scene. there was a fight scene between the two of them but he was so out of it that we thought he'd think it was real so we had Oliver's grandfather backstage in the wings poised to break it up if something went wrong. I stood with him and the scene ended fine and we all collectively sighed in relief. the guy was sent home immediately after and the drummer had to learn the lines in a day.
