    I took this class from Prof. Witt back in 1988. Witt was *awesome*, and I still remember his first lecture because he did some demonstrations of awesome materials that behaved unexpectedly (super-durable ceramics, flexible glass, etc).
    I really liked Prof. Sadoway's talk about students versus scholars, though. That's a _very_ valuable distinction.
    It's also great that the students now get the class notes as PDF and have the lectures available online. Much easier to focus in lecture.

    Even if you're a wannabe chemist at a community college, much like myself, please do watch the video through. I would venture deep into some crazy shit just to be able to sit in classes like this. Dr. Sadoway sparked interest in me within the first 5 minutes of his introduction, he made so many interesting points that I dearly appreciate. The roller coaster of a lecture ended with a picture of Dmitri Mendeleev sitting down with his hands in his pockets, age 35. I don't know why, but the fact that Mendeleev was 35 when he introduced the periodic table swept my body with a cool rush and some goosebumps! Dr. Sadoway recognizes the men who pushed the frontier of science with a certain appreciation that is only reciprocated towards deities and shit! This is a cool guy! I want to sit in his class one day..

    • @sapio9968
      @sapio9968 6 лет назад +23

      Well, all you need is a bachelor's degree to become a teacher, plus the teacher are not allowed to teach at their own pace, everything must meet a standard whether its state or district, and they have weekly meetings to update each other on their lesson progression... so can't really blame on high school teachers, it's the system.

      Usually classes become oversubscribed because students want to secure a seat. As time passes, students drop the class as they flesh out their schedule and decide what classes they want to take. I've had classes in the 350 student range the first day than go down to 250 after a month. I also have classes that stay at 600 students for the whole semester.

      I think I would Love Professor Sadoway's Teaching Style! I seem to learn somewhat better if & when I know something about the Subject's History. Is the Professor still part of MIT'S Teaching Faculty?

      Solid State Chemistry isn't really another name for Inorganic or Physical Chemistry. It's the study of materials in a solid state (vs liquid or gas). Organic materials can be in a solid state. I hope that makes some sense. See the course description and the syllabus for a little more detail at: ocw.mit.edu/3-091SCF10.

    to be fair, as far as the Romeo and Juliette naming analogy goes, i think that Is sorta how it works, I mean, it doesn't necessarily matter what the name specifically is, just as long as it's widely enough agreed upon, right?

    What are prerequisites for this this ??????

    • @mitocw
      @mitocw  6 лет назад

      In this case, the prerequisites are listed as "a motivation to learn chemistry, basic knowledge of high school physics and math, and problem-solving skills." If you have this question about any other OCW course, your best bet is to check out the Syllabus section in the complete course site: ocw.mit.edu/3-091SCF10, which is generally where we list prerequisites. You can also browse the MIT catalog: catalog.mit.edu for more information about specific subjects.
