I hope the students in that lecture room knew how privileged they are ! I feel so grateful to be able to watch this and virtually be in his class from the land down under .
I took this class from Prof. Witt back in 1988. Witt was *awesome*, and I still remember his first lecture because he did some demonstrations of awesome materials that behaved unexpectedly (super-durable ceramics, flexible glass, etc). I really liked Prof. Sadoway's talk about students versus scholars, though. That's a _very_ valuable distinction. It's also great that the students now get the class notes as PDF and have the lectures available online. Much easier to focus in lecture.
His lecture so amazing for me that how a great teacher has an influential voice over the class time!!! The first time I learned the level of MIT teachers and their students. All the best.
I bet so many people are enamoured of him, he seems to be such a great person! An informative lecture which makes me smile as a bonus is a good lecture.
A great professor and a good person to learn from for life skills. Everything he says that relate science and non-science is right on. I like his approach.
Even if you're a wannabe chemist at a community college, much like myself, please do watch the video through. I would venture deep into some crazy shit just to be able to sit in classes like this. Dr. Sadoway sparked interest in me within the first 5 minutes of his introduction, he made so many interesting points that I dearly appreciate. The roller coaster of a lecture ended with a picture of Dmitri Mendeleev sitting down with his hands in his pockets, age 35. I don't know why, but the fact that Mendeleev was 35 when he introduced the periodic table swept my body with a cool rush and some goosebumps! Dr. Sadoway recognizes the men who pushed the frontier of science with a certain appreciation that is only reciprocated towards deities and shit! This is a cool guy! I want to sit in his class one day..
Best line ever! "For the first time in your life you are being taught by people that are as smart as you are" Nothing like pointing out how stupid most high school teachers really are!
Well, all you need is a bachelor's degree to become a teacher, plus the teacher are not allowed to teach at their own pace, everything must meet a standard whether its state or district, and they have weekly meetings to update each other on their lesson progression... so can't really blame on high school teachers, it's the system.

Usually classes become oversubscribed because students want to secure a seat. As time passes, students drop the class as they flesh out their schedule and decide what classes they want to take. I've had classes in the 350 student range the first day than go down to 250 after a month. I also have classes that stay at 600 students for the whole semester.
Great professor, but blows my mind how these information is taught as college freshmen class back in 2010...
