Candy cane syrup for honey bee feed

We have 55 gallon drums of ground up peppermint candy canes. The summer heat has caused them to melt and become hard. We then add water to the barrel to allow it to soften and use them for bee feed.

Ive used candy canes for years with my bee's. I place a 2 inch spacer on the hIve and place the candy canes directly on the frames. I do this the first week of January after the candy goes on sale after Christmas, people say not to use the hard candy because the bees can't go out to empty themselves and get water, but I've never had that problem. I've kept bees for 49 years and do a lot of things with them that people say you can't do.
