Welcome to Long Lane Honey Bee Farms' Beekeeping Video Institute. Today, certified master beekeeper David Burns shows us the benefits of his Winter-Bee-Kind candy boards that insulates the top of the hive, provides pollen and candy for a good winter food source, and it also allows ventilation at the top along with an upper entrance and exit. Using sugar water in the winter works well in warmer climates. If the temperature is below 50 degrees, you want to use hard candy because sugar liquid will make the bees need to defecate, which they will only do outside of the hive. If it's consistently too cold, they will not leave the hive and they will eventually die from not being able to relieve themselves. The hard candy that comes with our boards will stay in the bees' gut and not create the urge to go like drinking liquid would.
Looking young David 😉
Throwback baby 😍🍼
For sure!
I have candy boards ready to go ...it is sort of cold out already. Is there a temperature point that one would NOT want to add the candy board to the hive - I currently have the inner flat wood piece on top with the cover over that. It is going to be getting really cold here within a week ( down to 2 F ) - and wish to get these on. Also I have the hives wrapped in installation with the reducer in ... am thinking they need to top ventilation soon that the candy board will give them. Thanks !
Should I add a little bit of propolis in the candy board
Great video. As a newbie I was wondering if having two entrances makes the colony more prone to invaders/robbers? It just seems they end up with two entrances to protect?
What depth is the frame? Also, you have 1" of insulation, what do you place in between the insulation and candy? Thank you
Some questions:
- Can these candy boards melt by too high temperature?
- Which month do you place them?
Thanks in advance.
This is something what i don't understand regarding "CANDY BOARDS".I feed my hives with sugar syrup, and that's it -bees will go through the winter nicely as always. What is the advantage of CANDY BOARDS? looks like a lot of work
