My mother and my grandmother were born in the region where this gem was discovered. They both unfortunately died prematurely, around 40 years, of breast cancer. I am now an Oncologist and I love jewelry and gemology. For obvious reasons, Paraíbas are my favorite colored gemstone. If you knew what it means to have a gem so beautiful and precious - as beautiful as the purest sea waters - rising from the depths of a land so dry and suffering ( not so long ago Paraíba people used to suffer from hunger and misery due to the lack of water and resources, my ancestors included), you would see that perhaps it is worth even more. If it is copper bearing + stronger saturation it is considered a Paraiba. But if you find some from the Brazilian mine, then you will pay a premium (they are also often higher quality).

Paraiba pricing is ridiculous, but apatite is a great recommendation for a replacement. Not only it can have the same colour, but it has very similar luster for less than 1% of the Paraiba price. The other thing is, that people tend to call every copper-bearing tourmaline a Paraiba. I've even seen yellowish green stones sold as Paraiba. They are much more affordable, and they have the same electric glow as blue ones, so it might be something to consider.
I have such a "Paraiba wannabe" apatite on my shelf. Even though it's not a top tier stone (it's cut too flat and has some visible inclusions), it's very shiny and very pretty. But apatite is quite soft. If you wear it as jewellery it will lose some of its luster with time due to micro-scratches caused by dust particles.

Yes labs will test the origin by using a sample from the specific mines and if it's the same as your stone. However if it's positive it is always positive but if it comes out negatives it's inconclusive and not a definite no. Does that make sense?
