  • This video really blew up for some reason. Apparently a lot of people hate what I say in this video. Yes, I was pretty critical. Even if you don't agree with all of my points, try to not be so offended. I say multiple times that it isn't a terrible sword, and I'm not claiming 90 dollars is anything crazy. I'm saying you can get better for less. Whether you like or dislike me for what I've said, thanks for checking out the video.

    I know this video is old and I hope you’ve gotten older and wiser. I’m not gonna mention the sword at all. Or your form. What I am gonna mention is that returning a gift from a friend, especially one who had it engraved for you, is a total piece of shit move. I’m not sure how you were raised, but I was taught that you accept a gift graciously as a gesture of friendship. If I was your friend and I saw this video, I’d never buy you a damned thing ever again.

    Please take notice how you are cutting - with Japanese style of swords and cuts, you only cut with the end inches of the sword, not halfway down and try to keep the cut as straight as possible - I can tell you are 'twisting' halfway through the cut and that is why you are getting a curved cut on the bottle - never draw a sword with your thumb placed on top of the near the tusba - also i can tell you might have a few cuts of the sword cutting along the inside of the saya - you must draw cleanly as over time you will destroy the saya - when you draw push the saya forward then backwards the same time as you draw for a clean draw of the sword - little small things like this can tell your opponent who you are - I practice Shinto Muso-Ryu

      Also, one MAJOR source of power for any cut will come through your hips for blade speed. Your pinky finger on your bottom hand is squeezed right before impact to help slice and follow through the cut. Do not rely solely on arms and body mechanics.

      @@hopper131 Yes I already know of this technique but you have to keep in mind of "hun mi" positioning otherwise you might not reach your target. moving the sword a fraction in time just before your feet move ki ken tai ichi. that is why yakuza used to cut off pinky fingers for punishment, other techniques the pinky finger is squeezed first depending on the situation and distance of your opponent

    Damn ....you just sold me on it! The things that you think are wrong are the selling points I like. That's a bad ass robust heavy metal monster. That sword is amazing....considering your sissy swing....most swords would fall apart just swinging it at the 90$ range. That's definitely battle ready as thick as it is. This sword is made for battle.....something you will never do.

    Man i think you expect to much. Granted I have not held this sword before, but I have been into swords for over a decade. 100$ for a sword is not alot of money. Go to any flea market in America and you will see 100+ for non functional decorative pieces. Quality swords can cost in the 100's or 1000's. I think you should get into a cheaper hobby like paint balling.

    Dude I am not going to rip into you because there is no need for that. You are young and have an awesome hobby and I think you should keep it up. I have been into sword play for 30 years so I feel the same fever you do. You don't have to be that picky about it like most of these fanboys on here will act like. The best cutting sword I own set me back exactly 18 bucks and is made of cheap stainless steel, of course I have tested it on an actual carcass (dead when I found it) of a coyote like I do all of my swords when the chance presents itself. Not to mention man if a friend is so awesome to buy you something then you need to keep it until you pass it down to your kids. I made similar mistakes about blades when I was younger but I learned through blood sweat and tears, more blood and sweat. Keep an open mind and when somebody rips into you over a video like this don't let it get you down, just learn from it. Legit training never hurt either and always be safe, eyeglasses, yeah it may make you look like a dork but when the cool one eyed guy is laughing at you just be sure to help him not trip over anything.

      Agree, though I think a variable speed set to slow is better as it doesn't risk burning the steel (which weakens the blade.

      Funny you should mention that, I did that with mine lol. Took a belt sander to it and reprofiled the blade. I cut away that ugly pommel and the rubber grip and removed the tsuba. I'm in the process of making it more traditional, just waiting on the rayskin to finish. I kept the base of the blade the same, so no habaki, didn't seem worth the effort to do all that grinding and then probably have to make a saya for it.

      I’ve always thought the design of this sword is very practical and functional. The only thing I would do away with is the pommel. The blade looks like it needs a significant regrind to bring out cutting ability. Bring the primary grind up a bit, thus lower the angle, and also dramatically thin the edge down, finish with a 12-15dps secondary bevel, blend it into the primary so there are no sharp transitions, and you should have a pretty formidable cutting sword.
      People often look to much into steel or design. 1060 steel is EXCELLENT for a blade like this, and even if it’s heat treated only half decent, with a significant thinning of the geometry, there’s no reason why it shouldn’t cut very well.

    The blade has 45 degrees per side on it's factory edge. It's quite hard to cut with it without reprofiling it. I believe they ended up with such angle to maximize the durability when people hit heavy stuff.

      Yes. that’s the biggest reason it cuts terrible out of the box. Most people immediately start blaming the design or the steel, which is a mistake. 45dps means a 90 degree inclusive, which is ridiculous for a sword. Reprofiling and thinning it down to 15dps would then yield an inclusive angle that is 3x narrower. This would create a thicker edge, and at the same time drastically reduce the amount of resistance the blade sees when entering a target. That would increase the cutting ability insanely.
      Geometry determines how well something cuts, heat treat and steel determine how long that geometry keeps cutting.

    Also as far as the handle goes it is bad ass and i think it was well thought out and robust. i guess some people are harder to please than others.

    I completely respect you opinion and your right to return the product. One thing i am noticing-as a novice practitioner of Iaido- is you say you are not doing difficult cuts, but you make several two handed cuts from your left side toward your right side with your right hand at the top of the handle, your holding it right but it is a very difficult cut to make and master every time

    I dont know alot about swords but ive been looking for a samuri sword but not a traditional one and when you said it was heavy and thick thats what im looking for and with the no bending i thought samuri swords are supposed to be hard and not flex also you lr sword doesnt have to slice paper to make cuts u can take limbs off with an usharpened broad sword if you swing it right just my opinion

    Lay off the kids guys. 30 years ago had I been given this thing I might have said the same things ... although we didn't have youtube to air it on true! So ... that being said this kid speaks from a lack of experience and that's all. THAT being said ... Honshu actually made a pretty good product here for the money you're paying. I've posted this same comment in a couple other places ... but ... you ARE getting your money's worth. The fact they made this out of 1060 and are only selling it for $120-ish is actually quite remarkable. Some have even surmised that is a marketing ploy ... and that its actually stainless. I don't buy that because Honshu is put out by United Cutlery and they are not going to make a false claim like that. While this is certainly not over priced ... its not under priced either. For the kind of steel, a plastic handle, an O-K sharpened sword you ARE getting your money's worth ... not more or less. Lots have either commented or complained about the weight of the blade. While the steel is thicker then most katanas I've held, overall its not all that heavier either. That heavier blade will help with its lack of razor's edge. This is GREAT for home defense and backyard cutting. And with it being 1060 its going to take a decent pounding with blade on blade contact as well. And yes... I know ... this was about the Wakazashi ... but it all still applies.

    are you extending chi into the sword? the blade may not be as sharp but it seems to have a very sturdy robust blade one would want in a real battle.

I'm Retired Military / Combat Vet and my concern is if the sword / weapon can put down an advisary and this sword looks like it will do the trick. Many of these video reviews on swords & knives are by people who like to use them for hacking-up objects that swords & knives were not meant to be used for. All of my weapons are functional and well-taken care of so that when & if they need to be used I know they will function properly.

    It's not meant to cut bottles in your backyard. It's meant to cut bone and flesh, which is does, and thats why people like it.

    Wow, arrogance at its finest! BTW, secondary bevels in antiquity (and modern times) were quite common in swords. Almost 1/2 of all historical swords had them, especially where you’d encounter armor. It makes for a much tougher edge. It won’t slice through plastic bottles as nicely but that’s not really what a sword is designed for unless you’re a backyard warrior. They were made for flesh AND bone.

      True. Especially in the west the "saber grind" has a flat bevel and a secondary bevel to make it tougher when in blade to blade combat. Also most of the wet work both in Japan and Europe is done with the last foot or so of the blade.

      Japanese swords are a bit different. They don’t have any “visible” secondary bevels. Most have a zero grind all the way from the shinogi to the edge, insanely sharp, less durable for harsh targets. The other form is when the edge has Niku or “meat”, strength at the edge is much improved on harsh targets.
      What it essentially is, is a more obtuse angle (transition bevel or secondary bevel) is placed on top of the primary bevel and then is blended into the primary itself. What is results in is a heavier convex edge with the “Appleseed” shape.

      I'm not a fan of the secondary bevel it comes with, but you'd be okay with it for most things right out of the box.

    Nice review on that,not to sure on the honshu line up. One of the selling points is the word tactical, and some people jump on it just because it has that word in it.

    wow i have the exact same sword mine came extremely sharp, that is sad u got a bad one. i love mine i also dont try to compare it to other japanese swords, obviously its not a traditional wakizashi. also the pommel is used as a counter wieght and secondary weapon which is one of the main complaints of katana critics that the katana does not have a pommel so i think UC was trying to put the most leathality into what is a obvious tactical take on a ancient and frankly outdated design of the katana. the over all wieght of my sword feels fine to me even light but i am an adult not a child.that being said again i believe this was done on purpose to make the blade sturdier so it can with stand more back yard abuse from people who use bad technique and break there swords then make a video and complain about there product. also did u check the tang or just take some guys word for it. plus again i am an adult so i understand u might think 90 bucks is alot of money but is it really not. its actually a good blade for the money although i payed 62 for mine. i guess i just have to hope that when people watch this video they keep in mind its all coming from a teenager.

    You are a very different kinda guy. Seems like you dont really get that 10 minutes of sharpening isnt any real time spent. Given that you said you can cut better with a $30 sword. Prove it. Lets see it bro. You swung that sword like you have tennis elbow. Stop blaming the sword for sub par abililty.

    Since the handle can accommodate two hands I would consider it more of a Kodachi/Ko Katana. But yes horrible product for the amount they want when there's lower priced blades that perform better if you want a good short sword add another $100 and buy the Hanwei Banshee

    So what is the weight? Give me details. I know that the average weight for any weapon, bladed or not, is about 2.5 - 3.5 pounds, historically speaking. Weight distribution is a separate matter, but the total weight needs to be known also.

      I got curious and went and looked and it is listed as 40 oz. The Cold Steel chisa katana (same blade length) is listed as 37.1oz. I'm guessing the rest of the weight difference comes from the pommel. So this is about par for the course for this blade length.

      @@Wastelandman7000 Right. This is only a bit shorter than the Chisa, dimensions are quite close. If that pommel is solid steel it would easily add 1/3 - 1/2lb of weight.

    The tang is only a quarter tang that is inserted between a piece of steel and tack welded in three places.

      No it's not there are videos on RUclips taking the handle off to replace with a traditional samurai handle and it's full tang. Don't make crap up

    if your whetstone is leaving scratches , you need to use a 10k grit and nagura stone to polish it.

    To be fair on its weight and length its not really a wakisashi. Its more properly a chisa katana which is lengthwise half way between a full sized katana and a true wakisashi.

    Within the 1st few comments he made I easily realized he has no business talking about blades at all. This thing works camping and we've shoved it through car hoods in a junk yard. You literally BUY THIS SWORD BECAUSE OF ITS SHAPE, POMMEL AND THICKNESS. THEY COULD HONESTLY CHARGE 3 TIMES THE PEICE AND THEY WOULD PROBABLY GET IT.

    $90 is a cheap price for a sword. It's not a high end katana but it should suffice your backyard cutting purposes

    ok i see u have ok skill with that sword but ur useing it wrong. i have the same sword u have an i never have a problem cutting ever hard plastic items like g2 bottles. it has the pummel to even out the weight. yes its still heavy for its size but that adds more force behind each strike. you need to learn how to use the weight of the sword correctly to have the out come you want

    Well, my man, I will be honest. I don't trust too much United Cutlery stuff. I mean, hands down, certain products are ok (e.g Honshu Tonfa sword cane; the Thumper; the Shillelagh baton) but uhm... in general said brand it's a nope, for me.
    Cold Steel (Katana) ones, on the other hand, are by far superior, but the price tag is completely different :-)
    IMO if someone is interested in this sword, which cost $90, that he/she should save $30/40 more and buy a CAS Hanwei Dark Sentinel.

    Good God that blade is thick! That looks like it belongs on a great sword not a Wakizashi! that thing is going to be WAY too heavy

      Really if you study it out you'll find its actually a chisa katana. (half way between a wakizashi and regular katana) BudK mislabeled it. Then again their katana from the same line has a 30" blade which is longer than your average katana. So, BudK's fault for mislabeling it. A short sword this is not.
      Also, its worth noting that most katanas were actually that thick when they were new. Most of the museum pieces out there have been ground and reground many many times. The originals were almost as chunky as this thing.

    That sword wasn't made to slice water bottles in half. Who cares if it's a clean cut when you're using it against an attacker.

    The way you swing, it looks like you're trying to open a lot of letters. You shouldn't publically looking a friend's "gift horse" in the mouth, and should certainly learn to swing like - like, well...pretend you're a man doing it!

    I have this wacky waki also. It is a wrist breaker. Not the worst, but it is far heavier than needs be towards the tip.
    I bought a cheap "saber" thats basically a machete. Its lenght makes it a legit wrist breaker. No taper. I took it to a grinder and thinned out the top portion and its by far, my favorite cheap sword to mess with. I will do the same with the Wakizachi because its just not enjoyable to use.
    Also, can confirm, sharpening is a pain in the ass. Ill grind in a better edge because as is, its just useless.
    I got this for messing about when I go camping, so I'm not concerned with how absolutely fked the ground down steel is going to look.
