Edge Bevels: Goniometer shows roughly 8 degrees for the secondary bevel. The bevel is mostly even except near the tip where it becomes very uneven. After sharpening the Goniometer still shows 8 degrees but a shiny secondary bevel has shown between 18 and 25 degrees. I’m not sure I am using the too right.

In my experience and according to my research on Honshu/United Cutlery the weak spots of their blades are:
-The butter knife edge their swords come with.
-On most of their single edged swords: the grip design, that draws your hand away from the cross guard/disc guard/oval guard/whatever guard.
-their tang design.
-on their newer swords: bad steel choice (D2).
D2 with a piss poor heat treatment, glad it didn’t cost you an injury man.
Cheers Mr.J. thanks for your reviews. Saves me time and money on knowing which brands are good or bad. Hope you are healing up well. God bless you and yours. ☘️
Thanks Shawn. Hope all is well with you too.
Sick...i LOVE the katana they make...handles heavy and the forms different but a perfect design concept in my egotistically humble opinion. Love your videos bro
The diamond pattern you refrence is called checkering. As I'm sure you know, it's a classic pattern for adding traction/texture on firearms and tools. Sorry for being pedantic but I just thought you might like to learn a new word today lol. Your channel is great and the Legacy of Anathar series is better than network television.
Commenting to boost this
Thank you for the education. It is appreciated.
It's always so wonderful when I see someone drop these little bits of info while being cool and humble. Hats off my guy.😊
This is a common problem on all their models with this pommel. I had the regular tactical wakizashi and my pommel fell off just from swinging it around. Looked like it only had a little bit of crappy glue on it just like yours. This pommel holds back what would otherwise be a really good budget beater option. I fixed my tactical wakizashi by removing the blade from the handle and filling the tang, the Chicago screws, the guard and the entire handle with G Flex epoxy. Like, the bottom end of the hollow rubber handle is completely made from solid epoxy and it now is much more durable and the balance of the sword is also more natural and not too handle heavy without the solid metal pommel. Wish I could show pictures. The stick tang piece broke off with the pommel so it's no long an issue either. I also messaged United Cutlery about this and their response was something like "we have many customers who are very happy with this design so it's not a problem" even tho I've seen many people in groups and on reviews say this exact same thing happened to them.
Damn make a vid and send the link
@@watevr4evr I got you. I can't do a video, this was two years ago and I only took pictures and my house burned down a few months after this. But let me know how I can send you pics. Email, Facebook messenger, etc. idk how to DM in youtube
I've been curious about this brand for a while thanks
I have the karito axe and I really gladi have it. Came very sharp and even after dropping the edge on a metal frame it's still fine but with maybe 1mm rolled edge. Got it only from the Cool factor. It's tough and feels very good when you hold it. I'm currently debating the Saber or seax they offer.
Great review, as always!!!!!!!!!!!
I appreciate that
Sardaukar office says "That is so useful in field."
If people were to ask me: "Shane, what sword would you choose to defend yourself during the apocalypse?"
I would say: "Sword? Nope. I'm going to swipe the Croquet Stick of Doom from Matt's house. That thing is indestructible. If anyone comes at me with a blade, I'll just whip out the Croquet Stick of Doom."
The fake full tang is such a sleazy move
Awesome review. Thank you. It’s a very nice looking sword. Design is very pleasing to the eye, but quality isn’t there. IMO the grain structure is a bit too grainy. While not terrible it could be more creamy. Thin Tang is a weak spot though ironically not as weak as where it broke lol.
I did not push my katana version (sans the sub hilt) anywhere near as far as you did, but I was genuinely impressed. I was not expecting the steel to be of such quality. Here are my thoughts on mine... ruclips.net/video/mjVjJmBEcD4/видео.html It's definitely a fun sword.
Oh no. The dreaded PING!!! That's a dealbreaker.
Dang. I was eyeing this for a minute. That pommel coming off and the blade breaking was too much for me. Even if I never used it as aggressively as this, it'd always be in the back of my mind. It's a shame though. It hits all the right spots for me as a tacti-cool me-in-high-school awesome looking sword. Maybe if it goes on sale.
I wouldn't recommend United Cutlery. With just about every sword they make, they do something wrong. Actually there aren't much tacticool blades i would recommend. Maybe the apoc line up by angus trim, but certainly not anything made by united cutlery.
There's always Zombietools if you have money and time to wait.
@@jasonknippa4410 I think this budget weapon is perfect for a single use scenario, they're a weapon quality that's fine for an emergency against an attacker, not ideal for camping but that's ok it's not it's focus.
Also the pommels on those swords are extremely easily broken off though the video I did has me bitoning through a tree with the blunt end of an axe as a hammer probably had something to do with it and then also whacking on trees and hacking into trees I did a lot of tree cutting with that thing and probably did shit that I wasn't supposed to do with it
thanks Matt
55-60 HRC may be good for short blades, but for a long ones it is too brittle, especially when blade have to be "springy". So, hardness of 50-55 is more than enough for swords (even on the lower side), it will cut good thanks to carbon steel properties (that's why I don't like stainless long blades, they slice sorta "soapy").
Thank you for saving me $200 plus I was considering purchasing these to save myself a little bit of money and obviously I would’ve purchased garbage, because the way the rat tail tang is just basically glued into the end handle would’ve been a very very bad move on my part because I’ll be using these to put my life on the line so thank you. I’m going to go to scorpion swords and purchase their tactical katanas which I know work. Well again thank you it’s good to see people like you’re doing Contant like this.
This is very in depth, I wish I would have found this channel sooner
Well, good news is there is plenty of stuff to check out now that you are here.
A Nice looking sword, I like their Honshu line to a certain extent, not To be compared or called an apoc type sword, but a nice option for light To medium cutting, in this case you generally get what you pay for,
I believe the term you were looking for with this type of double bo-hi is a "futasuji-hi."
Thank you sir.
I figured somebody said it already. Glad I checked before posting.
nice video, thank you.
Interesting. i do wonder if it is a quality control issue. United seems to be hit & miss w/ such. Those heavy pommels almost always come off in my experience though.
I think the plan is to put a nut at the end. I think that will help.
I've seen at least 1 other video on this very sub hilt product where it came off, I remember he said it had a better balance without it.
Excellent review Jim Hopper 👏🏼#StrangerThings
17:48 Why seeing you chugging the sword at the tree make me laugh so hard 😂😂😂
I have probably watched every video you have posted on RUclips, even with swords that generally don't interest me. This may be a coincidence, but I noticed many blades seem to surprisingly break at the point of impact where you have wiggled the blade out of a branch when cutting wood. I remember the RK elite destruction video and the spot in the blade where you left it lodged into the tree branch while you retied the end knot looked like the same spot as the initial break. Obviously, this is also the sweet spot where you do most of your cutting, but I'm wondering if this method of wiggling the blade out of the wood is creating internal stress fractures versus trying to remove the blade at the same angle it went in. Just an observation, and thank you for continuing to push through your injury for the sake of the sword community.
The stress could have weakened the blade there. Though for the amount of cutting I did, it should have have had too big an issue. I don't think I did enough to fatigue the metal. Glad you liked the video
Oh god, its very cool.
Oh, Matty. "Han-shu", lol.
Neat.
I love that blade...
still?
Pommel shouldn’t come off easily! I own couple of Honshu products but I didn’t intend to use them for cutting, just for wall hanging but did some test on Their broadsword and Claymore sword, 1060 and 1065 steel and I was surprised that they didn’t break. Their flex were good and blade shape backed to the original. But still when you pay $200-$300 for a sword you shouldn’t expect more. I’m trying to save some money so I can buy darksword armory sword. I hope they worth the money. any suggestion here?!
In Europe the ask double prices for the Honshu swords
Nearly everything seems double tere.
So glad you did this video. I have always gone with Cold Steel for swords.
I'd love to see you test there broadsword more like hand a half sword
I would be happy to but I don't think they are in a hurry to send anything else.
Be safe with the sword tip in the snow.
gotta find it in spring
Matt, MORE HONCHU PLEASE! . Also Please take handles Apart so we can see the hidden tang and handle construction...
I don't think that will be in the future. I was not thrilled with the sword and will not likely buy one myself. I also get the impression the folks at BudK don't want to work with me after this review and the drunk version.
@@Matthew_Jensen So on Shadaversity Channel, Shad's brother stated that seemed like a consistent on a couple Honchu's that they had trouble at the hilt. They broke there. That is what ive been trying to find out. Although Shad has one of the swords he really likes that hasnt broke at hilt. Still though they dont take the Handle apart on these to look at them. Im wondering about the tangs and construction method.
@@Matthew_Jensen So I own 3 Honchu's. A D2 steel Gadious, a Chinese War Sword, and their 300 Style Blade of Stainless.. Maybe I bite the bullet and take one apart at handle to see.
@@Matthew_Jensen Ive noticed that most Sword Channels don't take the Handle Apart to show the tang or handle construction. Even after it breaks. Not sure why that is. Seems like be a logical thing to do. Both to educate folks and see what manufacture's and distributors are selling..
Its a fair critique, I will see about getting them apart in the future.
The apparent need to repair/modify the product upon receipt to keep it from coming apart in use is what we Industrial Design Engineers refer to as a design and manufacturing DEFECT. The fact that the manufacturer sees no need to address the issue is indicative of their disdain and disregard for their customers. What would it cost them to fix the issue at manufacturing... ZERO! Nice wall-hanger at least. IMO
Be cautious with any Honshu blade. Every one I’ve seen all have the same fatal flaw. They seem to make all their blades similarly, where the width of the blade gets smaller to go through the guard, they all have very sharp 90 deg corners. Heat treat imparts a tremendous amount of stress on a blade and these sharp corners are a fatal flaw which creates a weak point where it will want to crack. It’s a shame as it would be so simple for them to just leave a small radius there instead of the sharp 90 deg corners. I have 2 Honshu blades and they both are like this.
I don’t claim to be an expert but I am a trained machinist that has worked with metal most of my adult life and had specific training on the heat treatment of metal. I won’t be buying any more now that I know about this.
That Pommel looked terrible man, very shoddy attachment. My guess is you are right about why it broke, I didn’t see any obvious occlusions or anything that would make me think the metal had a weak spot. Maybe the tempering wasn’t done properly leaving the blade too brittle. That would be my guess.
And they make it even worse by using D2 in a lot of their short sword sized blades. I mean D2!!! WTF!!! What's next? Ceramic swords??? Glass swords???
Pretty funny reaction to it breaking. Made me laugh. If it wasn't prone to breaking or falling apart, it would look good as a machete. A bit too dangerous.
Yeah, need those to hold up to slapping trees good.
I think it was the way you swung... And the angle and the way it hit the tree
I was considering getting that model but the metal piece in the center of the grip kind of turned me away from it if it wasn't for the fact that jutted out where your fingers go I wouldn't have minded
I'm pretty sure they make a version without it.
United Cutlery has always been trash. Mall ninja quality 420 & 440 stainless steel, mostly.
Also the fasteners are Corby bolts
That's the word!
That was a hell of a swing brother... I don't know man... The type of swing you did was a strong technique..
Also. It looked like it went at least 40 or 50 feet through the air... Lol..
It was a solid strike but you can see how much I am putting into it compared to when I try to cut or chop into something. I would have expected a bend, twist, or some more hilt trouble. Breaking in half is not ideal. At least in my opinion.
The Wakizashi is not meant for chopping logs, its meant for home defence. Centuries ago its perfect length was for the wall restrictions of home defence and today it is still meant for home defence. If you use it as an industrial tool it will eventually break. On an intruders head however, you may find it lasts again and again.
It may well last on softer targets but breaking where it did is still suboptimal. Its a fair argument to be made that the budget means some concessions should be made. That said, the issues could be resolved with a peen and better heat treatment. Attacking someone inside might also mean missing and hitting something hard, in this case the weapon has a high potential to fail.
@@Matthew_Jensen It is not the tool/weapon who fails but the one who wields it. Do you not believe you can cut a simple and wide target vertically ?
I think you might be missing the point of the video or at least my intended point. This is specifically a review of the sword and not the operator. Sure, a crappy sword in the hands of a skilled user can do a lot. Was that your point? If so, then we agree muchaco! Still, the objective here was to show this blade in action and how this blade operates and examine this blades pros or cons. I am not trying to die on this hill, you can like what you like, but like it for what it is. Or disagree, whatever toots your horn.
My point is these items are not made with the thought in mind that people will be using them for blunt force collision. Take one of your guns outside and start smashing them against hard objects and see how long they last. Doesn't mean they are poorly built just means they are not built for that purpose.
There are firearms that hold up better to abuse than others. Sometimes that is a factor on why thy are purchased. Also a number of them would hold up rather well to being smacked around. That is changing the subject though.
Keep in mind that my examination of the sword is intended to push it to failure. I know I am doing things that the sword is not ideal for but the point of the review is to examine how strong it is. Further to the add copy suggests that this is a durable usable product. That means different things to people.
Conceivably in a real world scenario a sword may strike unexpected things. What I am doing could be applicable to real use case. Particularly in some kind of altercation. You first noted home defiance. Houses are full of things that are not good to hit with a sword. The people intending you harm may have object that need to be deflected or blocked. In that case, you may loose a pommel or have a broken blade.
I would also imagine they were expecting some sort of blunt impact because the blade was sold with a rather dull edge. Chopping lighter targets with the original design of the blade would be somewhat abusive. Not quite like slapping a tree but not that far off. Worth calling out that swords do more than cut. They create openings and space. They get smacked and may hit other targets that are not soft. The advertising for this did not suggest it was a filet knife, it should hold up. Also, I am not expecting it to last forever. Bending on the tree would have been fine, shattering is not good. The pommel falling off is not good. At least I don't think so. You can disagree, buy what you like and like what you buy. Happy sowrding.
9 seconds in... ...I have looked at this sword on the internet recently and wondered about it. Thank you Matthew for doing this review.
I would love to see you do a review the APOC Angus Trim designed long sword. Skallagrim did a review of the Zombie Slayer version by Valiant Armory and it seemed like a decent sword. The APOC version goes for around $200.00 and seemed to be a good option for those without a lot of cash to throw on a first time long sword. A RUclips sword reviewer posted a video about four weeks ago in which he bent the sword by hand right before the guard and it stayed that way, it had 0 spring to it. The RUclipsr that posted the video is the MYRMIDOM. Just wondering if this one was a fluke or maybe a batch of them... ...or if they are all like this!
Thank you.
Consistency is one of the larger problems for swords. There are few examples out there of a product with a Steller, consistent, and long history.
How much
I think the problem was a bubble. Air bubble. maybe two. In industry we use ultrasound cameras to find flaws in welding or cast. Maybe here it was done so-so.
Is that something you see in the cross section?
@@Matthew_Jensen yes. I just suspect, since i am not sure 100% (picture is not reality). But there are two small parts on the brake point, that look like they were empty. Air bubble.
20:18 into the video i see two suspects for bubbles. One is "correct", round, form, the second is elongated. Just a small cavities.
If you want a decent cheap sword get it it’s worth it. trees are for axes not swords no wonder it broke man.. it’s tempered steel over 2ft long with 1/4” thickness and it’s cold outside and your slapping it against a tree…
I find the music starting at 7:06 kind of distracting. It's bot... bad... per say, but it is maybe to loud and gives of a weird vibe for a technical review.
Most of BUDK's stuff is wall-hanger quality, I've ordered a few things from them many years ago, like I said, most are good for only hanging on the wall, stainless steel, overweight, crappy quality
I ended up bri security my pamel with J-B weld
Honshu seems to make weapons for left-handers because their kreigsmesser's ring is on the left side, making it Left-handed.
Hrm.. Interesting note. In Japanese arms, they are always right handed. There were no left handed swords or at least not that I have seen. All the left handers were made to use their right hands. That remains true today for the most part.
I was going to say that perhaps it's designed to wear it edge down, but that wouldn't matter on a Kriegmesser.
Another theory of mine is that they just don't pay attention to this stuff
@@helenwrong6363 Yes, I think you're right.
Pommel comes off easily. Okay: end him rightly. If one misses with the pommel, strike the flat of the blade aginst suitable tree and send the yokote at your opponent. A true sci-fi weapon.
Would be cool to see it pulled off and make an actual strike on something.
......😮..... I whas planning to save up for the wakizashi & katana from the honshu line.... but there are other models out there, without the finger hilt.... I did not know this one existed. But over here(europe) these swords go from 150€ to 200€+ .... so I whould not be happy if they fal and break. I have a john lee kill bill katana, and the tip is bent, just by resting the blade with his tip on an old chair, the wood whas not even a hard kind..... that whas such a dissapointment, because it whas a gift. And I coll knives and swords, from when I whas 15, getting 47 in a few months, so I dont use my knives and swords to test them, I keep them pretty much mint. But in life threatened situations, I whould use them. (No I dont have a large coll, because I dont buy every month a blade) but seeing this, makes a coll think.... thnx man, this realy whas great. Altough I think its due to the steel, maybe a little fault in the steel, because I have seen a few others, also tested to the limit, and they hold up good. But I think its just luck(bad luck) if you get one with a fault in the steel/material.😊😊
budget sword sounds pretty good. 100 bucks and it might break after you use it a while? Fine by me, I simply wont use it, it's a weapon firstly, tool second. I'll keep one of these around and know that they're pretty much only good after being used seriously once, which is all I need it for anyway, to work in a desperate situation only once. Not apocalypse level, but definitely home invasion level.
Hold up better than 3000 dollars katana
Just a comment for the algorithm
Most welcome
🙃
I would replace the handle with some really nice wooden scale with nice grain stain it like camo or purple wood burst.
Damn, I was actually interested in a tacticool Katana :/
Have a look at the A.P.O.C. Survival Katana. Looks a lot better on from what i can see in the pictures and I've seen some positive reviews about A.P.O.C. If you have the money, i'd recommend checking out zombie tools, they are supposed to be nearly indestructible.
It's a pass for me that second bevel on the edge just pisses me off as far as blade geometry goes it's crap
日本人として言わせて下さい。
これは日本刀ではなくファンタジー世界の産物です。

In my experience, BudK stuff is wall hanger quality, crappy stainless steel, bad construction, and they feel like they're gonna break if you do any hackin and whackin and smackin
Honshu is not as bad as most of their other stuff, but still, in therms of durability, you'd be way better off buying a cheap stage fighting sword from Czech Republic and sharpening that. There is a company arms and armor (website is written arms-armor, not arms-n-armor), making those for quite an affordable price.
@@sihilius, I know of Arms and Armor, Honshu, and Windlass, I think I'd rather buy from them than BudK, but I'm more of a Windlass guy myself tbh
Budy of mine has one and it never failed, but maybe thats cuz hé didnt use it in ways it isnt designed for, a sword is not designed to be thrown against a tree and to be smacked against it with the side, doing that is bad even for quality blades, its like taking an axe and throwing it against stone and then getting angry it breaks, axes are for wood, not swords, and aspecialy not katana's, sorry to say but your tests where rediculous, no one is going to throw a sword like that except if they are mentaly ill, i do agree that the pommel coming off is bad but It seemed to be a dud cuz the one my friend has has shown no signs of wear and tear, a real katana made in Japan would also get damaged if you threw it like that, these tests would be understandable for a tomahawk but not a damn katana
You are not wrong. I am doing things that the sword was not designed to do but the trick here is the sword is marketed a bit as being able to do them. Also they are not as far off what happens to swords as you might think. I explain in the video what the ad copy says. It looks a little different now than when I made the video but it is supposed to be a durable weapon. It is not a durable weapon. It is not bad for $100 but the failures it experienced are not ideal. To use your ax analogy, if you took your ax and hit a stone and it shattered, that would not be a good ax. If it dulled, bend a bit at the edge, or maybe even cracked the handle, that would be reasonable, but shattering would not. In this case, the same is true. I am pushing the sword, the pommel falling off and the blade breaking is bad. Other blades do not break doing the same activates. If nothing else it suggests that there is opportunity for improvement based on other blades on the market (even at $100). I would further note that if you need a sword it may be in a situation involving a person who is trying to hurt you and you may need to use the sword defensively or you may miss or encounter unexpected objects in whatever engagement you find yourself in. Slapping a tree is abusive but its not that different to someone hitting it with a club or bat, its not that different than a bad strike to a motorcycle helmet. Shit happens in sword fights, its fair to want a sword that can deal with a little more of the unexpected.
Raya para la suma, ésta espada es basura y solo sirve para colgarla en la pared
r/mallninjashit
funny you mention that
Yea it’s a cheap blade no wonder it broke both ends
Looks like an overpriced wallhanger that is only usable as a light duty grass cutting machete. Definitely not a post apocalyptic, SHTF, or tactical sword like it's advertised as. No way should a sword with 1060 steel break like that. You should have it tested to see what kind of steel that is. It broke like stainless.
United Cutlery = 💩
naa, they make some cool stuff. This one did not work out but no reason to paint them with such a wide and fecal filled brush.
Trash sword
Is this USA made?
no
You're risking cutting your hand off if the Palm was like that I would be careful thrusting with it stabbing with it you risk the handle malfunctioning therefore you would cut your fingers off
The "sub hilt" ones suck because of that little finger tine thing....
I did not mind it.
@@Matthew_Jensen i remember you saying something once awhile back about something like that prohibiting a reverse grip.
I could reforge the palm oil on it and then peen it with a wooden grip
how lazy. all they needed to do was drill a couple of holes in the pommel, and pin it. would be alot stronger.
