  • “I’d like to say it was a good fight, but it was almost disgusting!” laughed an exhausted Ondra after battling to the chains of Belly Full of Bad Berries (5.13b). Armed with the redesigned Black Diamond C4 Camalots, Ondra booted up for what he now says is one of the biggest fights of his life. The infamous offwidth pushed Ondra to the max as he fought his way up the 45-degree overhanging crack.

    Nice video but I think I will never get the point of crack climbing. To me it's about how much you can suffer having your limbs crushed by your own weight rather than a real strength challenge. But I'm surely wrong since I only tried it a couple of times. I do get the trad climbing part though, that is fun and challenging both physically and mentally. Nice job Adam!

    • @DiamorphineDeath
      @DiamorphineDeath 5 лет назад +5

      You're 100% wrong dude. Offwidth climbing is an entirely different beast than face climbing as you have to learn an entirely different skillset. Handstacks, knee jams, torquing and counter-torquing...off hands size, arm bars, etc. It is extremely technical, and also incredibly strength intensive. I learned how to offwidth climb on a 5.11d down in mt woodson, ca. Read an interview with Brad Jackson, who put up belly full of bad berries, and in it he discussed getting tossed off the very last bit of face climbing up top on that climb. The fact that a 5.11d, and ratings really do these climbs 0 justice as its incredibly physical, but the fact that he made it to the top and barely came off after the fight that is the first 3/4's says something about how difficult it can be. Considering how strong and gnarly Brad is as a climber, I took a hell of a lot of pride reading that and knowing that I had put in a hell of a lot of time into that climb to finally reach that point of just being able to make it to the very last bit. I've fought in the past, and nothing mimics offwidth climbing more than a couple rounds of sparring at your limit, its the same level of full body exertion, especially the pump factor in the hands, its brutal.
