    OHMYGOD HEY!
Earlier this week I was invited to the New Victoria Theatre in Woking to see the brand new UK Tour of PRETTY WOMAN the musical.
The show, which is based on the beloved 1990 film starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, currently stars Amber Davies (9 to 5, Back to the Future), Oliver Savile (Wicked), Ore Oduba (The Rocky Horror Show), and Natalie Paris (Six).
Check our today's brand new video review for my thoughts on not only the new tour and its cast but also the show and its material...

    00:00 | introduction
02:19 | what is Pretty Woman about?
05:41 | what is the musical like?
    11:29 | what are the show's flaws?
20:05 | how is the new tour cast?

I saw it with Elly Jay last week and I totally loved her. You’re right it’s not the most brilliant show I’ve ever seen but it is totally charming and fun and sometimes that’s exactly what I need when I’m at the theatre.

I saw it at the savoy earlier this year. And it’s the only show I’ve considered walking out of. 😂. But people in the audience loved it. Standing ovations. Each to their own.

How have I only recently discovered you?! PW is one of my fave films, so had to see the musical. I enjoyed it for the nostaligia but didn't LOVE it but couldn't say why exactly - you have helped me understand why. Thanks (and for making me laugh)!

Mickey your reviews are like a masterclass in musical theater. Thank you so much for your thoroughness and generosity when it comes to what works and what doesn't. Amazing to watch.

I think Pretty Musical The Musical is just OK, but I too have unexplicably seen this show 5 times. Twice on Broadway with Samantha Barks and Andy Karl as the leads, then again with Samantha Barks and Brennin Hunt before the show closed. I saw the US Tour while it was in Boston with Olivia Valli and Adam Pascal. I saw this in the West End with Aimie Atkinson and Danny Mac. And also the UK Tour in Birmingham most recently with Amber Davies and Oliver Savile. I really can't say why I keep going back to this show over and over again.

You’re one of the few creators who makes me legitimately laugh out loud- your dry wit and humour is fantastic! And of course your insights as a critic.
Being in the outer metro/somewhat regional area outside of Melbourne, Australia, it’s difficult to enjoy theatre, and very costly to see the big shows that do manage to come to Melbourne.
I hope one day to see a production of Hadestown, for example!
Thanks again for your top notch content.

I saw this with the original cast Pre-Broadway in Chicago.
My reaction was much like Mickey Jo's : fun comedy, not a classic. The desk clerk character (don't recall who played him) was definitely a stand out.
Mickey, you might consider a Chicago side trip next time you're on this side of the ocean.
Chicago has a well established theatre culture; besides which many shows stop off here on their way to NYC.

I’m going to see Pretty Woman twice, once in Aberdeen to see Elly as Vivian and the other time in Edinburgh to see Amber

Totally got the Muppets reference cause I fanboy like that. I saw the US tour with Adam Pascal (making it the 2nd tour seeing him in after RENT. Dare I say I need to see him a 3rd time in something else soon?) buying a ticket in under 3 weeks before the show. There was a random front row single that called to me & even though I wasn't a fan of the movie I said "what the hell let's do it!" I actually had quite a lot of fun at the show because in yes a large part Happy Man & also a scene stealing Alfredo were fantastic. Sure it missed at points but "I Can't Go Back" is drilled into my skull & can't escape so I consider that a win because there are some shows where you can't wait to forget the music you just heard.

I disagree with changing famous spoken lines into song lyrics. Casual audiences want the same spoken beats. Will it be as good as the original/movie version? No, probably not. But the types of audiences who would be interested in seeing something like Pretty Woman or Doubtfire on stage want those lines for connection/familiarity. I think if they're put into songs, they get lost (to a casual audience member).
Basically, I think those lines need to stay spoken lines to appeal to the masses.

Lmao I'm an American and we know what ground level means, however "floor one" is a new phrase you've created lol I think you may have meant 'first floor', but "expectations on ground level" is a phrase used here in the states.

I saw the US tour version of this with Adam Pascal who of course gave a great performance. I agree with your assessment. I think the musical is ok but it isn't the best I've ever seen nor do I really want to see it over and over. The music is ok also, but other than the Roy Orbison Pretty Woman song, I can't remember a single song from this show.

I love Pretty Woman, however I may be biased as I will be seeing it for the 18th time next week in Oxford! I love the tour version, however I do miss the lift and the bath they had in town. Also just fyi Lila is pronouned L-ee-la, I actually can't believe she's only 19 and has such an amazing operatic voice! Love all your videos, however I do have to disagree with your star rating on this one 😂

I went to College with Richard Gere’s Niece. 😊 I loved the Sam The Eagle reference.
I have not seen Pretty Woman but now think I should.

I will see it in Manchester. Natalie Paris is such a great vocalist, but it doesn't sound like this role suits here. Favourite song - Long Way Home.

I think the show sinks or swims based on the actor playing Edward. I think Andy Karl was miscast but when I saw it with Adam Pascal I thought he was excellent.

I feel like if you like the movie, you would enjoy it. I found it to be a slog to sit through on broadway as someone not a fan of the movie. I went for the leads, but I was just underwhelmed by the show

I really hope this doesn't transfer to Broadway. The last thing we need is another sub-par musical/cash grab based on a Hollywood movie. We already have "Back to the Future."

It was already on Broadway in 2018 he said. I think the UK have a soft spot for musicals of US properties that shouldn't be musicals, bless them. I wonder if because they aren't familiar with the original so the base level plot of the famous property is good to be that well known, and they're not as familiar with what has changed so it's not as eye-roll inducing.

controversial film. i hate the leading character making a stripe club gal into a pretty gal he wants. a film what the guy wants at the end of the film. broadway fans were happy to finally see Samantha Barks . later on sophie evans on a limted broadway show and danielle hope off broadway kinky boots.

I saw the US National tour last year and I had very similar thoughts. Hugely talented and charismatic leads but the shows were forgettable and there was no creativity to the adaptation.
