One would want to know, did these two great personalities discuss Torah together? Did Rav Kook speak Yiddish? Surely he must have 25 years previous to 1957. How amazing to have a recording of their conversations together.

With all due respect to Rav Soloveitchik, I do not believe that his condescending insistence that Rav Kook was "a great religious personality" but "not a philosopher" adds honor to our sense of Rav Soloveitchik's own depth of insight. While it may be true that Rav Kook's thinking was not formally systematic (he had no training in systematic philosophy), I wonder whether this should be the sole criterion for whether or not someone is "a philosopher," especially when the point is being made so emphatically (how many times did he repeat it?) to an audience of college students, the implicit message to seemingly diminish the intellectual depth of Rav Kook's thought. Rav Kook's thinking was remarkably innovative, sophisticated, influential, and complex (perhaps far more so than Rav Soloveitchik's -- on ALL these counts). One need look no further than the sheer number of academic citations, doctoral dissertations, master's theses, college-level courses, and peer-reviewed academic articles. Or one can look to the great excitement (within Academia) with which news of previously-unpublished writings by Rav Kook are greeted even today, almost one hundred years after they'd been written. Along with the intense, ongoing, and widespread study of Rav Kook's thought within the Jewish religious world, is there another Jewish thinker of the past 125 years whose "philosophy" has been more widely-discussed (within academia) and whose thoughts have had more academic citations?
You completely missed what Rav Soloveitchik meant by that. I should add that despite the fact that he repeated it so many times, you still missed the great compliment he was lavishing on Rav Kook. Classifying Rav Kook as a philosopher even a great one would relegate him among a long list of even Jewish philosophers. What Rav Soloveitchik did was A) say that Rav Kook was so vast that he could not be defined as one thing or another and B) by saying that his value was not just intellectual rather in the fact that Judaism permeated his senses.

I appreciate the above defense of Rav Kook Pbuh but there was a huge assault on his great teachings based on the idea that they were birthed outside of divinity and Torah and came from pure intellect alone (philosophy) and thus, foreign to the Nation. This could not be farther from the truth. So in the lay sense, he was a philosopher of Nietzschean proportions, but as the Rav said, he was not a "Philosopher".

To extol Rav Kook’s philosophy would give credence to the idea that his teachings were born intellectually. Above all else, Rav Soloveitchik revered Rav Kook as a servant of Gd and that is the pertinent point.

תודה רבה, הרב הירשפלד. אולי רק תלמיד מובהק כמו הנזיר היה יכול להבין את השיטתיות של הרב קוק באופן אספקלריא מאירה כפי התיאור שלו.
ממש מפליא, הדברים של הרב זצ"ל. ברור שלרב קוק היתה שיטה מקיפה. מה התכוון הרב שהוא אמר שהוא לא פילוסוף? שאין לו שיטה? חבל שאי אפשר לשאול אותו.
יש גם מקורות ברב קוק עצמו, שהוא אומר שאף על פי שכתביו נכתבו שלא לפי סדר, באמת חכמתו היא מסודרת ושיטתית.
גם הרצי"ה חזר על זה פעמים רבות.
