As an American trucker, I love how you Aussies have your equipment all set up. Half way tempted to move me and my Kenworth 800 out to you and join the fun. Would just have to get use to driving on the left side of the road. Really good video you have too.
kcirred nosrednad . Driving on the correct side of the road is not a problem if you are right handed as it is more comfortable . The reason you drive on the other side is down to a little upstart called Napoleon who was a left handed man and made all who he conquered to drive on the wrong side. Sadly when we Brits kicked him out we the mistake of not putting things back how they used to be in Europe before he stated medelling. Take a visit to Aus as it truly is the best country in the world and you would love the diving there because out of town there is sod all on the roads.
@Comrade Frang Yes, but they had horse drawn vehicles.
5 лет назад
Comrade Frang Did you think that they didn't have horses? How the fuck do you think the roads were organised back then? Its just like today, except replace the horses with cars. Jeez man...
@TheRandomgamer Technical you are right however. You can go back beyond Roman history to see that most of the people's in the ancient world including most of Asia and Japan rode on the left side because 8 out of 10 people are right handed. Therefore it is more appropriate to ride (drive) on the left. In 1792 Pennsylvania introduce legislation to ride and drive on the new turnpike roads and in 1804 New York state became the first state to make it a legal requirement to stay on the right hand side of the road. By the end of the American civil war all the state's of the Union were to have adopted the right hand side of passage on all roads. If you happen to be left handed it's good news for you because it's more comfortable as your natural line of sight which is biased from the left to right. I am right handed so the opposite applies.
When I was a nipper (13) in 1979, I was taken on an Australian holiday with my grandparents, I'm a Brit BTW. We travelled up the east from Melbourne eventually to Cairns by coach. Best holiday of my life, it wont be beaten. I recall first hearing and then seeing a roadtrain pass while I explored the scrub around the latest Hotel we were over-nighting at. I was utterly inspired and incredulous, what a memory!

80,000lbs is our highest allowed weight without a special permit. The only exception is the state of Michigan where they regularly have up to 180,000lb trucks with 7 or more axles under the trailer. I believe this is because they don't have any north/south railways in the Lower Peninsula. I'd have to check if this is still true. I left the Midwest US a while ago.

Great! For me, that I drive with a near 20 meter and 50 tons(in Norway)Truck, it´s a dream. And this fuc*ing great music from your V8 engine, I love it. Best wishes from germany to down under
I like seeing all the subtle differences in how different nations drive. Japanese flash the 4-ways to say thanks, in the US trucks will give a switch off of the headlights when your rear is clear as you pass to let you know it's safe to merge back into the lane. Small things like that are really cool. Not on any test yet you pick them up as you drive in these places.
Yeah they are a bit iconic aren't they. My favourites are sitting high on a rocky outcrop looking across a flat distant hot barren featureless landscape, seeing the dust kicked up 30 km away by one of these beasts. Or in a similar position on a star filled night and hearing their grumbling cutting through the eerie silence from miles away or the smell of diesal at truck stops. It gets in to your blood and buggered if you can get it out.
I would give anything to be able to come to Australia to drive a roadtrain. what a rush that would be. Makes our super Bs in Canada look like toys but they are a blast to run!
We have them here too - Super Bs or B-Doubles that is. They are allowed in most areas on B-Double routes only which are pretty broad. Conventional Semi can go most places but B-Doubles have to stick to certified routes as mentioned. Road Trains however are a completely different story. 2 unit ie 2x tri axle trailers and an 8 wheel dolly are allowed on more areas than your traditional 3 trailer Road Train which are mostly allowed in remote areas only. Even longer mining Road Trains are allowed on specific routes only ie from mine to loader. There are many exceptions. I occassionally see Road Trains on capital city freeways but I guess they are by individual permit.
Australian driver's licences have several different categories, but the main one with regard to road trains is the MC class, short for Multi Combination. This is different from the lower HC, which means you're only allowed to pull one trailer. If you could get a work visa, every state of Australia has a licencing schedule of how much it will cost to get a licence to drive them. You could always get a working holiday driving singles, and see if you can get an upgrade. Because you've driven something that's the equivalent of an MC class, all you'd likely need to do is brush up on traffic law and take the driving test to prove you can do it
