Anyone who thinks this film is too mature for kids must not have seen Hocus Pocus reference 'virgins' about 100x, and ritual killing. Society has become so desensitized, yet US kids movies have gotten infantalized in the last 20 years to an alarming degree. It's weird!

I mean they didn't linger on those moments that long, if anything you look at this film and they pause on periods, pads, and unnecessary emotional moments that drag the film. Hocus Pocus had the context that witches did dark magic so no shit about the virgin dark aspect its to build suspense at whats at stake which it did a better job than this movie failed miserably at.
What was at stake in this movie? I'm being serious unless there is an example of an accident that shows what happens when the red panda isn't sated there just isn't enough for me to give frankly a damn about.

All the hate I saw was adults complaining about how this film covers the topic of puberty and people thought that was inappropriate… what??? It’s puberty, kids really need to know that stuff, this is the dumbest reason to complain. I mean, I guess parents have the right to completely shelter their children. IMO puberty should never be seen as inappropriate, I got mine when I was 9 and I thought I was dying and I thought there was something wrong with me, that’s exactly why this film is important. I don’t want anyone to hide in their room and cry for hours or feel like they’re feeling gross ways like I did. I felt ugly and I hated my body I thought all eyes were on me and I felt absolutely disgusted with myself. Because no one ever told me that everything I was going through was normal. Children should never feel that way.

Something interesting I noticed with the two latest movies by Disney and Pixar(Encanto & Turning Red) is that they both deal with intergenerational trauma. A lot of moms seem to fail to see the aspect that the movie is also about a mother trying to protect her child but failing pretty badly. Seen a lot of mom comments saying they think the movie is teaching kids to be rebellious because of a boy band. This isn't the case because if you think your child is gonna get money by who knows how and sneak out to a concert you're probably doing something wrong as a parent.
Other points I've seen complaining about is the periods talk as if that's the whole movie? It's a natural thing as is puberty in general. The movie isn't your educational video you watch in school, it portrays a moment where a mother sort of overreacts, caringly, to the fact that her daughter may have gotten her period. Some people think it's disgusting this was even mentioned in the movie but what other options is there for a mother to react that way? Probably none.

I can see the validity of the complaints. These kids are 13 and look like literal kids.
It's telling that the other mothers largely put limits on their kids, too, so the whole "you can't go to the concert" is not an unreasonable boundary to set. One of the biggest criticisms I keep seeing is that it is not appropriate for children because of references to menstruation, rebellion against parents, etc. They've missed one of the film's strongest messages that was aimed at them and not their kids, that children are not possessions for their parents to mold and shape as they see fit. Parents certainly need to serve as guides and protectors but they also need to encourage and support their children; otherwise you become a monster. I've yet to see anyone explain to me how Encanto is perfectly fine (Abuela's harsh expectations for her family literally destroys their home) but Turning Red (Ming Lee's strict insistence on who her daughter is leads to her becoming a Kaiju and wrecking Toronto) isn't?

Besides, everyone I've known personally who started rebelling against their parents had parents who were either exactly like Mei's mother, or were the type who were more interested in being their kid's friend. But even then the type of rebellion was a lot different.
The ones with strict parents tended to be the type to sneak out, drink, and not do their schoolwork. They also tended to be the types who because they were never allowed to actually be responsible for themselves, were irresponsible as hell. Ie: they types who couldn't manage their money. Also they tended to not really know how to think for themselves because they never got the chance to, and they tended to be pretty selfish.
The kids with parents who had no rules also grew up to be irresponsible and did a lot of the stuff kids with tiger parents did, but there was also the added fact that they tended to just be massive assholes who didn't really care about anything in their life, and had no semblance of what they wanted to do with their life, as if they just didn't have any hobbies.

Then again, I really enjoy the 'slow' cinema moments in animation too, films that don't necessarily have much of a villain or billions of plot strings (Kiki's delivery service for eg has no villain - just a coming of age, sweet movie). And I guess with these stories being less about overcoming a villain, and more introspective, they work well for that light-hearted 'feel good' movie style. i loved this movie! but i think a lot of those who criticize it as you mentioned in the video is also due to the fact that pixar's previous movies were usually non-humans given humanization. those deliberate choices allowed general audiences to relate to aspects of the films bc the films themselves were casting wider nets.
so when a movie that's focusing on an unapologetically 13 year old girl in the early 2000s who comes from a family of color, suddenly all the white audience members are "disconnected" from the film and thus mentally disengage with the story. it really shows a lot about their privilege of being considered the "default" in cinema (like casting white actors or designing white characters), so the moment a big animation studio creates a movie with a specific audience in mind, suddenly it's "a bad movie."
and that's really unfair for the team behind this movie, bc even if i can't "see myself" in this film, i felt the movie had strong enough characters for me to empathize with them and desiring to see how their story ended.

I have to admit that I really enjoyed the movie. It was weird and really out there, and that's what I liked about it. I really enjoy when animated projects that don't shy away from family problems, teenage drama or social issues. The characters, animation and voice acting were all done very well. They did a good job of showing how scary changing and growing up can be, but it happens for a reason.
But like any other Disney movie, the problem is mostly resolved to quickly. Forgiving and moving on is important, but its not easy (like they make it seem in their movies). Ming did the exact same thing to Mei that her mother did to her - and she didn't see that? If nothing is ever going to be good enough, you shouldn't push a child to be perfect. Healing can happen...but it takes time.
(Ming shouldn't need to apologize. She may have given her mother that scar, but it was Wu's controlling and overbearing nature that caused such an act.)
People may call the portrayal of Chinese culture in this movie racist or stereotypical; but it isn't if its all fact. Most families of Asian cultures are very controlling and pass that toxic quirk to their children. Parents shouldn't push their desires onto their children, because than the children never get to live their own lives. If your kids rebel, its most likely because you're refusing to listen to them.
If there's a sequel, I seriously hope that Disney doesn't tone down the problems and issues of growing up.

    • @nangbaby
      @nangbaby 2 года назад +1

      Spoilers....
I kind of disagree with the whole idea of Ming not needing to apologize; heck, that was one of the better parts of the film. Even if her mom "pushed" her into it, it was Ming who lost control. Her panda is something she has to accept responsibility for. Even if it was foisted upon her, Ming was the monster and scarred her mother for life.
That's why I hated why the resolution was to simply seal the panda away for her. None of the other pandas were that size or that malevolent, but given that sweeping the problem under the rug didn't work, that would be a sign that maybe forcing her to put the panda in a box isn't a good long-term solution. It would have been nicer if Mei had been able to start teaching Ming control the panda and maybe make it more manageable, giving a sense of intergenerational healing.

It's a character driven, zero villian, creative passion story. That's... The foundation of Pixar... And the animation style was introduced in Luca, it's their new thing and finally sets them apart from Disney which ya know, was an issue for awhile. What the heck. And honestly, it's one of my favourite Pixar movies. The cringe is part of its authenticity and if you keep an open mind past the introduction it gets really really good. I love the aesthetic, the lively animation, the personality, the storytelling and depth. It stands, imo, amongst some of the big Pixar movies. Maybe it doesn't have the memorable scenes that make you cry like Up, or the unique story like Toy Story, or gay sea monsters (Luca is gay, you can't convince me otherwise) but it has its own merits and those are plentiful and significant. I think people just hate teenage girls and hate change, and Pixar is changing and this movie is unapologetically about a teen girl so... But people should pull their head in cause those are stupid reasons to hate a movie. You don't have to like it but liking it isn't bad either.

I’d say it’s just as good as the other films and it had a bigger impact on me then soul did since it was something I could relate to. A good reason why I hate this film is because its message is very cryptic and so specific to female teenagers. This film had a chance to reach female teeangers and also broaden its audiences for everyone. For a good example, a message could be like being yourself, freedom, whatever. Mei could've learned who she truly is, and what her panda side really means to herself. Instead she literally profits out of it just to visit a boy band. Mei's consequences feels so underwhelming and both overwhelming in this film, like at the start she gets all of these weird embarrassments and stuff. For example her at school from her mother, or her mother again going to the store clerk to confront him, those felt so out of line, like she got shat on from the beginning, but then by the second half of the film, she's not deserving the consequences she needs. For example sneaking behind her mother's back, lying, and more. This film's execution should've been better imo, and could've reached a broader audience, which Pixar is very good at, but this film felt too specific which made a general audience dislike it. Puberty imo should be talked about a bit more often than usual, and should be more normalized. This just felt too specific for a company that makes films G rated, this felt more into the teenager zone and doesn't feel like something Pixar would bravely try doing, but good for them. The movie in general is a good idea, and I'd say it doesn't deserve as much hate as it does, it just needs to be improved to reach a broader audience imo. Also the animation hate is so stupid, I personally like the cartoony style and quirky type they're trying to do, people are just now trying to find excuses why they hate the film. If you like the movie, good for you! :D This movie is great, and you should like it. I personally do not like it because this film is overly specific imo. Thanks for reading.

It was a pretty great movie up until the "getting rid of the panda" part. The morals are feel jumbled and it doesn't teach an end moral. What does the panda even stand for, after 1 hour and 30 minutes of Period references, Emotions, Puberty?
It feels like a film where the main character's bad actions are excused. Meimei, in panda form, quite literally gave a boy gigantic gashes going down his face, arms, and tore through his shirt, probably scratching his chest as well. She then goes on to run away to a concert, which in real life, is DANGEROUS. As a woman in college, 13 year old children do NOT have a clue about what happens to 13 year old girls who run away unaccounted for and unsupervised at concerts or raves.
    "I'm 13, mom!"
What lesson does this teach? What's the point of this film? At the end, it doesn't hold morals for anyone of any age. It's a movie just to exist, which essentially places it on Spongebob's level. Yes, it's a film for kids/teens growing up that, for once, **isn't** about homecoming, prom, highschool valley girl drama, or anything inappropriate. That's good, and it's great, but above all, it teaches this:
    1) Despite assaulting a bully and giving him permanent scars (they were erased 10 minutes later in the film, however, that's not how it is realistically) it's ok to keep your panda, even if it's a danger to other people.
1.5) The panda was not linked directly to "Repressing emotions" or "Repressing yourself." Everyone else in the family was normal, and functioned fine without the use of it, even in the end scene. Therefore, she should still be held accountable.
    2) You can lash out and physically lunge at kids your age, and you can lie to your parents long term instead of having a healthy sit down about things that the parent do that upset the child.
    3) When you don't get what you want, lie and do it behind your parent's back. Do step 4.
    4) You can run away to a secret concert unsupervised and yell at your parents when they give you consequences for it.
    5) Magic will happen, and instead of having a huge family fight, everyone will cry and make up about it instead of remembering the child's actions.
Realistically, she could have been kidnapped, she could have gone to jail or juvenile for assault, her parents could have been sued. Possibly even kicked out of school, but this isn't about reality. It's about teaching kids the world's only about them, and there's no one else to consider when you lash out, lie, and run away.

    • @pillowscout
      @pillowscout 2 года назад +3

What movie DOES do strict parents and demonstrates the consequences of Children running away? Finding Nemo.
It shows the flaws in the parent, but also, the child. The child was lost, scared, confused, and that's the reality. Nemo could have died in a fish tank, died in captivity, essentially kidnapped, eaten, anything. Marlin regretted his actions the whole movie. There was growth, there was real substance, there was trust, and there were realistic consequences that children can understand.
You know one character in Finding Nemo, that had giant, lifelong gashes on him? Gill. His life was permanently debilitated because of it, and the scars never disappeared or magically healed. There were consequences for a character that were long lasting, even before the film started. That is how you place realism in a movie. That these things last forever.
Finding Nemo was everything that Turning Red lacked, and that's why we are comparing it. The animation quality and "Whimsical factor" both went up, while the actual writing dropped like an anchor in the sea.

This just shows that we need more movies for girls because the lack of that is making people act really insane. This is a sign that there really is a serious lack of big picture media made for little girls and that is a serious problem. When a movie depicting the lives of young girls is breaking people‘s brains, then we still got a lot of work to do for society to respect women and girls in our society.

I can't help but wonder if people would still hate the movie if it was about a 13-year-old BOY and his relationship with his father and the final conflict taking place at say, a baseball game instead of a girl and her mother and the final conflict taking place at a boy band concert. People tend to get weird talking about what 13-year-old girls have to deal with during puberty, ie periods, and a lot of people LOVE hating on things marketed to teenage girls, ie boy bands.
This movie was quite accurate at portraying a 13-year-old girl, thinking she's grown up, her friends and obsessions being her life, trying to find her own identity outside of her family, and the changes that come from being a girl going through puberty.
And maybe if this movie existed when I was 13, maybe I would've felt less shame at having periods. It was just something that wasn't talked about and was considered shameful to talk about even though they're totally normal.
Anyway, I think people complain that it's not Pixar enough because they don't want to admit that they're uncomfortable with a movie that deals with girls going through puberty, even though the main themes are something a lot of people could relate to.

I really loved this film. I hope they turn it into a series so we can see Mel grow more alongside the Panda. I know Pixar dosent normally branch out their movies into sequels or series. But I can picture different episodes having Mei deal with more things that kids growing up have to deal with. Like hygiene, crushes, rebellion against authority, new interests in life, etc.

I liked the art and the premise; what bothered me was the resolution. I'll need to see it again to really figure out my thoughts more fully, but on first watch this felt shallow in kind of the same way _Grease_ feels shallow. Two people are in conflict; one changes to suit the other, while the other just doubles down and gets their way. That hurts because that's not how healthy conflict resolution works - even if one person is _more right,_ there are always things we can learn from the other "side." And the movie did a good job of showing us the flaws in both perspectives, but then the ending just decided to side 100% with Mei and decide that her mother was just out of control and that Mei was right about everything.

Thank you for encapsulating precisely one of the biggest problems with this film. It leans too hard into "Mei is right and you need to let go" while ignoring how this girl got off scott free for making some horrible decisions and, yet, at the same time undercutting its own message by saying "you can choose to keep the panda or to lose the panda and both are equally valid" even though bottling it in is what caused the third act to happen. Basically, Mei got her way and no one really learned.
Heck, at least Teen Wolf had Scott Howard learn he couldn't use "the wolf" to find happiness and that movie is 35 years old.

Ofc its my opinion, but me and my mom didnt like it bc we thought it was a little boring, i thought the ending was good, (almost broke me to tears tbh bc of how i saw it, i think i would have cried if i was up in my room) anyway like yk the end where mei is in the bamboo forest? i liked that part alot, from there till the end, bc some of the things she said in the bamboo forest, i related to alot, completely different topic of she was talking abt for me i saw what she said as a transgender thing (since im yk trans wtv) and the whole movie is like based on a mother accepting her child for who they are and what they want? like ''my body, my choice'' ''my panda, my choice'' which is where my whole trans thing i could relate too with, i was talking to my friend abt it, BUT ANYWAYS, like i thought it was a little dumb? Not in any offensive way, but that pretty much the whole thing was them just wanting to go to a concert and ofc other things happened that were meaningful and everything, its just over not being able to see a concert? and idk i just found it a bit boring, it was cute for sure, but just not one of my favorites, please dont hate on me for not liking it, you will get completely ignored and i wont even tolerate with ur comment- i didnt say anything hateful abt the movie or anyone, just not one of my favorite thats all, and ig thanks? if u even bothered to read this.

It's OK for people to hate the movie, as long as it isn't for stupid reasons like "ewwww, it's too woke!!"

They’re upset about girls going through puberty. I got my period when I was nine years old, and the doctor said it was normal. I had a friend who didn’t get hers till high school. I don’t see the issues with this movie at all.

I enjoyed the movie but going into it I thought it would be worst than it actually was.

I honestly loved it. Also as a bts fan, TaeYoung of 4Town just makes me so happy. His name is based on Taehyung and his design on Jimin and I just love that so much!!!

Went into the film with a shrug and a wish that it was okay at best... left wanting more and questioning if I'm a furry. 10/10 would watch again and again

Maybe, I'm biased because I relate to the main character very much, but I think the hate is overblown. It was a good movie imo!

I dont think many PPL realise that the red bear is a metaphor for her getting her period.
So the movie is basically about what a teenage girl goes through

The answer is sexism. Its a story about a grip and girl needs. Therefore its bad.

I can't disagree that's a component. And I'm an old man. But I have a daughter, and she went through some things as an adolescent.
That scene at the bathroom door as Mei's mother initially thinks Mei's menses has started, and the father freezes in mid-step and fades backward...I choked laughing for five minutes. We had to pause the video.
