    I think the dad deserves an award for "Dad of the Year". He doesnt get a lot of screentime, but its so heartwarming to see how, while he cant relate to...well...turning into a panda, he still comforts Mei Mei, especially before the ritual. He knows and understands that what Mei Mei isnt different from Ming with what theyre going through. Ming fought with her mom so that she can stay with him, and Mei Mei is going through the same thing but with her friends.

      I think he's a good dad however I do think he kinda enabled his wife's toxic behavior towards Mei a bit. I think he should have protected her better and tried to get through to mom. But maybe I'm just talking about my own trauma from my own parents 😅😅 Idk lmao

      I thought that scene would be better if his glasses had the fog affect or the affect where you can’t see his eyes but he’s nice and all, since he hardly ever talks in the movie so in that scene it would hit harder if you could finally see through his glasses and see his eyes whilst talking for the first time

    I appreciate that the film doesn’t have the whole main character tries to hide her secret then everyone find out and they all get mad, it’s nice that everyone knows that she can become a panda. Also am I the only one who thinks Ming reminds me of Abuela from Encanto?

    I just wasn't expecting to hear "perv" and "sexy" in a Disney movie, along with talks about periods and pads. I hope more Disney stuff does this, it just makes it feel that tiny bit more mature and relatable
    Also I can't be the only one who thinks Meilin's family were the best characters right? Her mom was a great antagonist, her dad was sweet, and her grandmother and relatives were a joy to see even if they were sort of supporting characters. I found Meilin kinda boring as a protagonist, and the friends were ehh.

    Speaking as a girl, I'm glad this movie exists in general. I don’t think it's no where near a masterpiece, but if I had a daughter, I'd show her this. The film doesn't sugarcoat the nightmare that is girl puberty, and I'm glad they did so. It's not immature or uncomfortable, this is all stuff I had to go through when I was 13. In that sense, it's nice to see this topic get discussed since it's sort of rare in media.

      @@laurenduncan3084 how some*. Again these movies are not to be generalized. I loved this movie, and granted I’m not a “girl” lol but I am a teenager, and everyone’s different and unique, this isn’t something that every tween girl goes through, sure there are so many aspects that are relatable, but comparing this to every experience, (even if it wasn’t your intention) is annoying. The entire point of the whole friend group is that they’re all different, so continuing to make generalizations just regresses the progressive this movie has.

  • @everest2268
    @everest2268 2 года назад +279

    I think the simplicity of this film is what makes it a masterpiece to myself. Films like this and Luca have really embraced the ‘twist on slice of life’ from Ghibli and I absolutely adore it. There’s no need for a big villain and the drama doesn’t need to be more tear jerking than necessary. It feels relatable and super rewatchable to me, whereas with most films (especially Pixar’s) I avoid rewatching them because I’m just not in the mood to make myself feel sad. Plus, the pushing of the art style to embrace the more cartoony aspects of 2d art has been phenomenal in my eyes. I already liked turning red’s style but the way they pushed it in certain sequences to show tension, embarrassment, excitement etc was super cool. It also resonated with me in general a lot being an early 2000s kid and having an overprotective and overbearing mother, and yknow, being one of the ‘quirky’ girls growing up. Plus, it was based in my country which I very rarely see. It feels good, nostalgic, and has an accurate amount of cringey moments that I don’t see utilized in movies much but is far more realistic because of it.
    Overall, I’m glad that the majority of people at least liked the film! Not everyone loved it, and that’s totally okay and normal. But it’s nice to see that it was generally well received and people had fun with it. And let’s be honest, even if you couldn’t relate to the messages, those colours and visuals and music were so fun. Warm, vibrant and upbeat, they really captured those early 2000s moments like a memory!

She shows Colombian culture, and she really is someone people could relate to with their own families. Like meis mom, she is in no way a villain, she just wanted to keep the family safe. Though having friends to rely on does help with the emotional rollercoaster of puberty too, so there is that to kind of add onto it considering how she got her control was thinking of them. Plus the panda wasn't the only thing about puberty but the general liking boys, growing up, cringey moments, etc, and one moment meant for the story/plot progression doesn't negate the rest of the puberty stuff they DID get right.

    • @eyjay1508
      @eyjay1508 2 года назад +2

      @@potatolord8677 My issue is that this results in the movie having no stakes.
      The panda literally has no consequences or stakes, personal or interpersonal. She has control of when and how she turns in and out of the form, so the puberty metaphor fails, it doesn't "take over" so its not dangerous, and there's no risk to anyone finding out because everyone already knows and nobody cares, not the students, the teachers or any authorities. In fact its not that nobody cares, its that people love her for it.
      You can have one or the other but not both.
      Either others accept it but she can't control it making it a personal conflict. (I.e. Having trouble finding yourself)
      Or she can control it but others don't accept it, making it an interpersonal conflict because it has to stay hidden. (I.e. Being embarassed about puberty due to being ashamed and fearful of rejection from others)
      Or if you want a heavier drama with stakes, she can't control it, and others don't accept it, making her life hell. (Combination of both of the above elements).
      She in perfect control, she's never gonna lose control, and everyone knows and doesn't care. There's literally no stakes or conflict at all that relate to the panda itself, or its metaphor as puberty. It just fails on every level as a story.

    I have to admit that I really enjoyed the movie. It was weird and really out there, and that's what I liked about it. I really enjoy when animated projects that don't shy away from family problems, teenage drama or social issues. The characters, animation and voice acting were all done very well. They did a good job of showing how scary changing and growing up can be, but it happens for a reason.
    But like any other Disney movie, the problem is mostly resolved to quickly. Forgiving and moving on is important, but its not easy (like they make it seem in their movies). Ming did the exact same thing to Mei that her mother did to her - and she didn't see that? If nothing is ever going to be good enough, you shouldn't push a child to be perfect. Healing can happen...but it takes time.
    (Ming shouldn't need to apologize. She may have given her mother that scar, but it was Wu's controlling and overbearing nature that caused such an act.)
    People may call the portrayal of Chinese culture in this movie racist or stereotypical; but it isn't if its all fact. Most families of Asian cultures are very controlling and pass that toxic quirk to their children. Parents shouldn't push their desires onto their children, because than the children never get to live their own lives. If your kids rebel, its most likely because you're refusing to listen to them.
    If there's a sequel, I seriously hope that Disney doesn't tone down the problems and issues of growing up.

    Personally I enjoyed EVERYTHING about this movie, I know it has some flaws but I dont know man, the cringy humor, the exagerated faces and the more adult topics worked a lot in its favor for me, if I had any complaints about it, it would be that the final climax of the movie is a bit dumb when introducing the boy band guys into it? it just felt really weird and much more surreal than the rest of the movie.

    You didn’t dodge a bullet with Encanto, it’s just the toxic side of the fanbase that paints it in a bad light. Huh. Oddly enough I see the artstyle less as homaging Ghibli films and more homaging other type of 80s/70s Anime like Doraemon. The round bodies alongside the big mouths, the more keyframe centred poses and the cartoony yet still grounded movements kind of give me more old school pre-shonen anime vibes

    this was definitely a teen girl experience movie, and I found myself relating WAY more than I anticipated. To the archetypes shown in the friend group, the boyband fever, the anime esque drawing in the notebooks, all of it hit home. Watch it with a girl and you'll see what I mean. Loved every second of this.

The art style is not so bad, I love the color paletted backgrounds and the symbolism behind this. I give it an 8 out of 10 because of how realistic approach the movie went into without dwelling on it for so long, the relationship between ming's mother and ming was very intimidating and I thought of a missed opportunity for the reason ming turned into a panda would be because her mom belittling her about not being responsible of her own daughter or bring her down to her lowest point that she gets upset and stressed to the point she desperately wants to prove she can be a responsible mother and have her mother be proud of her and ming having to use her daughter in the final act as an outlet of letting her feelings out by sheer anger and expressing how she was raised to be perfect or what not

    I absolutely loved this movie, warts and all, because it mirrored my own adolescence so vividly. The awkward, obnoxious, self-confident friend group reminded me so much of my middle school friend (yes, we were all insufferable, too). I watched Mei Mei suppress her emotions for the sake of her mother, like I did my entire childhood and teen years, and I wish I had come to the conclusion she does so much sooner. It was extremely cathartic and, in my opinion, a love letter to kids who grew up loving their families but equally loving boy bands, fluffy animals, and hair barrettes. Yes, we were cringey. But equally yes, we were deserving of love.

    To me this movie is more good than bad.
    I mean I really loved Mei Lee, her mom and Dad, her friends and everyone in the movie were so charming and cute. I’m also glad that Mei decided to keep the red panda inside of her, without it, then she and her friends wouldn’t have gained a lot of love and attention from the people or achieved on following their dreams with the 4 Tone concert boys.
    As for Mei’s mom, Ming, her character was so Interesting, and of course not only being an overprotective mother, but also a karen, like look at her how she exposed Mei by showing the drawing of a boy as a merman that Mei drew to get the entire public to laugh and make a fool out of her, especially that bully, Tyler, and Ming spying on her own daughter outside at the school with a pair of binoculars legitimately embarrassing Mei as she’s having anxiety problems when her mom is around, how she responded and treated the security guard right there gave me all the information that she was indeed a Karen woman lol
    Also, that sad emotional scene with Ming when she was young, man I couldn’t help but sympathize for her because of what she did to grandma to hurt her which explains how she got that scar on her face. Man, that scene was so phenomenal and my tears shed and made me appreciate her more l, because she gave us the reasons why she was so overprotective of Mei and didn’t want to let the same thing happen to her own daughter. That scene was so heartwarming and satisfying🥲

    Listen, as someone who didn't watch the movie but has stalked it vicariously online through clips, it makes me nervous. I live in a family where I'm worried I won't be accepted if I let out all my true feelings and colors. I feel watching this movie with my mom would strike up the exact opposite kind of conversation this movie should strike. My mom never learns her lessons from what she watches and reads. She's more likely to consider Mei "disrespectful" and a "brat" (and probably "promiscuous" for the twerking bit near the end) and then be harder on me for having my own life outside the family circle. I really don't want that freedom being taken away, and she already talks about wanting to watch this movie I am terrified that she wants to see it. It's so annoying that I'm already an adult but I still have to live with her and live in this constant fear of still being treated LIKE I'm Mei's age!!

I cant relate to growing pains girls went through puberty, but I did relate to the generation trauma Mei Mei had to go through because of the older generation. Its taxing when growing up in Asian households, you have to be perfectly pristine, especially towards your grades in school, it sucks that while they do care for you, families can be overprotective to the point where their tight grip can choke you to the point its hard to express yourselves to them.
