    This is my favorite MCU movie. I found Portman charming, I liked the simple story, the theatrical dialogue, and I think it has the best score in the MCU.

    Concerning the post credit scene, I guess it's supposed to mean that Loki is kind of controlling Selvig from far away in order for him to build the thing that will allow him to cross over to Earth at the beginning of Avengers, and since it's from across space and stuff he doesn't have complete mind control and can only work through suggestions.
    I know it's a stretch but it at least kind of explains the situation.

      @navy0287 7 лет назад +2

      Mental manipulation by Loki is exactly what that end-credit scene from Thor implies. He says what he wanted Selvig to say to Nick, and Selvig repeats it verbatim.
      Loki shows off his power to influence minds again in the Avengers when he use it on Bruce Banner as the guards start taking him through the Helicarrier. He makes extended eye contact with Bruce as he walks past the lab, Bruce begins showing signs of disorientation (and rubs his eyes), and then Loki turns away with a smile. I didn't really understand how important that scene was until a saw the film a few more times.
      That scene pays off later after Natasha gets Loki to reveal his plan in his cell (sending the Hulk on a rampage), and the Mind Gem in Loki's scepter induces an argument between the Avengers in the lab (and further influences Bruce) prior to Hawkeye's attack on the Helicarrier.

    I get why people dog on the Dutch angles, they are overused, but they're never used incorrectly. Dutch angles are meant to convey unease, confusion, something not being as it should be, etc.. This isn't a perfect movie, I didn't like it the first time I saw it, but I've really grown to appreciate and respect Thor. I think Kenneth Branagh directs the hell out of it, he may even be over-directing in some scenes, and he gets great performances out of a lot of the cast (mostly in Asgard).
    That scene where Thor cannot pull the hammer from the rock and Heimdahl is watching from across the stars is beautiful! The musical score is also a standout, an outlier for the MCU.

      I will agree with you on the score certainly. Doyle is always great and quite unique compared to the very standard scores of the rest of the MCU

    Disappointing to see how much respect for this film Cap has lost since his original commentary; I blame Eric. =(

    I remember reading a thor comic before marvel's recent reboot that odin's wife were discussing with him about the one God, but he says he doesn't recognize that God. So other Gods exist in marvel just in their own pockets in the mcu. Ghost rider proves angels and demons exist so God has to exist.

    • @Ren_Davis0531
      @Ren_Davis0531 7 лет назад +1

      Jason Aaron's first arc on Thor was all about Gor aka the God Butcher going around and killing all kinds of gods, and there was like a community of gods. Not to mention that Hercules proves that the Greek pantheon exists and Vishnu is also a Marvel character, so other gods have existed for a while in Marvel.

    thor is not super strong, while he's fighting the shield guards. he's human, most of the film. remember he couldn't get out of the hospital restraints.

    I waited awhile to see this movie 'cause I've never cared that much about the character.
    But this was when Marvel's magic really started to work on me, and they made me care about yet another character I never had before.
    The fantasy elements really helped draw me in as well since I've always been a big fan of that genre.

    You two say that people don't have the hype and love for Loki that they used to and I think you're right in the sense that it's died down somewhat, but I'm pretty sure people still hold him as the gold standard for Marvel villains.

    Regarding Paramount, I remember after Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk, they signed a distribution deal for "the next five movies" which was always going to be through Iron Man 3. Having their logo in front of Avengers and Iron Man 3 (and receiving a bit of profit) was really just the original contract being honored even though Paramount didn't have to do anything thanks to Disney.

    The dashing Fandral, Hogun the grim, and the voluminous Volstagg! These three should be able to carry a movie on their own.

    I'm pretty sure the concept art for Ragnarök has him wearing the helmet. Who knows if that means it'll actually be in the film, but there's a chance.

    The explaination for how they fixed Bifrost is that they used The Tesseract (If you recall Thor and Loki used that to get home in Avengers)
    to be fair I am getting this from a tie-in comic so it May not be true but I think It makes sense

    I for my part can't wait to see more Loki in the next Thor movie. I also don't think that The Dark World in any way killed the Loki hype, it just had this effect that a lot of people started to complain that he supposedly ruined the movie (which is nonsense, his presence rescued an otherwise terrible movie). I suspect out of hype backlash, because this idea that only squealing fangirls loved Loki caused the oh so manly comic book fans to go against Loki at every opportunity. I frankly got tired of this discussion, so I am now laying in wait for being all excited about whatever he will do in the next movie. I can't wait to see it. I still don't care one bit about Thor.

    This movie ended up getting ranked #12 when I finally hunkered down and did that. Ironically, I thought it went by too *fast* on my most recent viewing. Maybe it's just that the time isn't used well, but I could've used way more time spent on character stuff.

    The magic in doctor strange is scientific since it is pulling from the different dimensions

    • @Ren_Davis0531
      @Ren_Davis0531 7 лет назад

      I don't see how that makes it scientific. They talk about it in a scientific way by making it like a natural part of the universe like gravity or magnetism, but that doesn't make it any less magic, and certainly not the only utilization by a fantasy series of magic as a "science"

    • @makura5705
      @makura5705 7 лет назад

      Ren Davis the multiverse is a theory in science. That is more of a science-esque than we normally get for magic. You never hear of that in like Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings. Marvel clearly still isn't comfortable with magic by itself

    • @Ren_Davis0531
      @Ren_Davis0531 7 лет назад

      Makura That's not a convincing argument. Alternate dimensions is something from the comics, so if you have a problem with that then blame the comics. Plus the multiverse isn't a theory in science because that would mean it has been proven and tested over and over again to the point where it's basically fact. The Multiverse is a hypothetical claim about the existence of parallel universes and many prominent scientific figures claim that it's a non-scientific and unrealistic idea.
      Furthermore, Dragon Age is similar in that their magic stems from a parallel plane of existence with the only difference being that Dragon Age is a complete fictional world where the Fade (the dimension where the magic comes from) is a natural extension of the physical world whereas Doctor Strange still happens in our world with dimensions that aren't connected to our own. Simply basing magic around the multiverse doesn't explain how magic isn't magic since other fantasy series have shown their magic as a fundamental force of the universe that certain people can tap into with the proper training and the energy is called magic. Whether it comes from our dimension or other dimensions is irrelevant. The Sorceror's Apprentice movie literally talked about magic as a mutation that involved scientific processes that they happened to call magic.

    Eric has a high bar set for actresses. Natalie Portman isn't the greatest of all time but she's still a really good actress. He's said this about like 3 or 4 really good actresses but then he praises someone like Idris Elba who has a pretty spotty track record. I've seen him be pretty horrible in movies. Though I still love him lol.
