HP EliteBook 830 G7 Review - Upgradeable but Compact Ultrabook

  • Lisa Gade reviews the HP EliteBook 830 G7, a 13.3” aluminum clad business Ultrabook with upgradeable RAM, SSD, Wi-Fi and a 4G LTE slot. Thanks to our sponsor, FlexiSpot Soutien Office Chair (get $15 OFF) - bit.ly/3sGVvN2. The rugged yet light 830 G7 is available with a variety of touch and non-touch full HD displays, has Intel quad core CPUs, 2 DDR4 RAM slots, an M.2 NVMe SSD, Wi-Fi 6 and optional 4G LTE. Ports are plentiful given the thin 18mm chassis, with 2 Thunderbolt 3 / USB-C Ports, 2 USB-A, HDMI and 3.5mm audio. It’s a nice counterpoint to the not much smaller Dell XPS 13 that lacks upgradable components and legacy ports.

After seeing this video when looking to replace my MacBook M1 with a Comparable thin and light but upgradable Windows machine, I bought one of these used with 1TB SSD and 32 GB of RAM for $399 in 2023. I am very happy.
Thank you Lisa for another excellent review!

Lisa, given your expertise and experience, it would be awesome to see an "editorial" type video where you take a look back at some of your favorite products over the last 10+ years, or share thoughts about how the mobile/PC industry has changed and where you'd like to see it go in the future.

Absolutely love this laptop and I'm a Mac user by choice. My job got me one of these for work and I've really enjoyed using it so far. Comparable build quality to my 2019 16" MacBook Pro. It won't convert me to being a PC user outside of work, but for a PC this is pretty impressive.

After having used only ThinkPads for years now, and my last Tiger Lake based being hottish,
this time I got the EliteBook 835 G8 Ryzen 5850U and all in all I am
liking it. Was afraid that I might dislike the keyboard, but it is
really good, though I like the ThinkPad one more and I am really missing
the TrackPoint! Will wait once Zen 4 mobile comes and see what ThinkPad
will have on offer. Overall to ThinkPad lovers/users, I do recommend
EliteBook definitely, less the TrackPoint and maybe some sturdiness.

My typical use is watching video, RUclips, email and online shopping, but I want it to work and not break for as long as possible, like a Toyota or Honda. I am leaning towards Lenovo, I work for IBM and get a discount but currently have a Yoga and it the screen never works. The Yoga has the top that folds like a tablet and I hate that. Also they still don't have a middle mouse button for the pointer-stick on the 14" - what's up with that??? Can't scroll with it, honestly makes the pointing stick utterly useless compared to Thinkpads.

We used HP elitebooks in our company, but ... NEVER MORE. They are so bad. Many of them had problems with overheating, touchpads and with inflating batteries (that HP blames on customers saying that they should use notebook chargers only for charging and then disconnecting it from notebook till the battery is empty again). Oh, and the Bang and Olufsen sound is sooo bad that it even doesnt work correctly with their HP dock station.

Every HP laptop I've owned declines rapidly right after buying it. From short battery life / swelling, running hot, high-pitched fans, mediocre screen quality, etc.. etc... Every generation, I hope to see things like that improve, but they don't.

My MacBook Air from 2013 has a quad-core i7 and 4GB of RAM. You mean 8 years later you're still payin' the same price for a quad-core/4GB laptop? PC tech has really stagnated...
Edit: Oh, it starts at 4GB ram configurations but goes up. Whew. Had me worried.

    • @SebisRandomTech
      @SebisRandomTech 3 года назад

If it were a 2013 MacBook Air it would not be a quad core i7. The Pro’s at that time did have a quad-core.
Also your MacBook’s RAM is soldered on while in this HP it can at least be upgraded by the user. Say all you want about PC manufacturers but at least they don’t actively try to prevent users from repairing or upgrading their own products like Apple does...
And if we want to talk about stagnating tech, let’s talk about Apple using essentially the same design on their computers for over a decade and still selling outdated hardware for several years at the same price (trash can Mac Pro, non-retina MacBook Air, entry level iMac, etc).

Why does it look so ugly compared to the M1 Macbook Air? Don't they have good designers at HP?

It’s a business laptop and not a consumer laptop. There is a difference. You buy this laptop to do work and not sit in Starbucks to write your novel. Upgradability in a thin and light laptop is heaven.

Function over form. If you think this is “ugly” I would absolutely hate to see your opinion about ThinkPads...

If HP makes the original Elite 7 inch, I am buying.
