    I am also entering my 5th year of teaching! One of my professors in college gave us a shoebox that she called the "Smile File," and every time I get a note from a student/parent/administrator, I put it in the box. It's perfect for rough days, when you're feeling unappreciated, I just pull out the box and read all of the notes :)
    Also, my first year of teaching I really had to learn how to "not take work home with me." It was very stressful on my personal life and my well-being to come home every day with all of my stresses from work. Yoga, not hooking up my school email to my phone, having a trustworthy friend in the building to vent to (not my spouse), were all helpful ways to learn how to stop taking my baggage home with me.

    Kids need to be taught gratitude. I had a teacher when I was in intermediate who really emphasized being appreciative of the knowledge we were getting, and appreciative of the people who guide us (parents, teachers, etc...) and I have carried her words with me until now. I'm only a substitute at the moment but hopefully, when I am a teacher I can instill the same thing in my own students.

    I'm an INFJ. My weakness is that I'm kind of reserved. I can be social but I am perfectly happy with being alone and that can alienate me from my coteachers and aides. However I'm very patient and caring and want to help my community and the future and I make other people's needs a priority!

    Hi there, I’ve been teaching since 2005, and seriously teaching gets harder every year . One of the things that I feel has helped me not quit is moving around in my career. Get other certifications, try other grade levels or schools. It helps. I do love.... my students and I know it’s worth it. Good luck 🍀.

    I actually just left my old job because of the administrators and negativity in the whole district. I am excited to start fresh and work in a better environment.

  • @haleyksvl
    @haleyksvl 6 лет назад +2

    My first year teaching last year has almost ruined me for teaching entirely. Like you said, administrators were so critical of certain teachers, played favorites, had no control of behavior, no concern for children with severe emotional issues(4 in my classroom), tried to control certain teachers, but offered zero support, only criticism & negativity. Luckily I had outside opinions from my alternate certification program who did support me as much as they could and told me what a great job I was doing. Now I am struggling to find another teaching job because I guess that principal was intent on ruining me for life. I think about giving up a lot..but this video is very helpful/eye opening.

    Great advice for teachers at any stage of their career! I was ready to throw in the towel about six years ago when my assistant principal was named principal of our newest middle school and took me with her. She revitalized my career. This year was rough because I'm the oldest teacher at my school and the younger teachers shun me a lot even though I'm willing to collaborate and learn new things. My kids showed amazing growth, though. Then I received a letter from an 8th grader that made me sob like a baby and realize why I do what I do. In August I'll begin my 19th year, and I can't imagine doing anything else. I love talking with teachers both veteran and new and sharing ideas and advice.

I think working on my weaknesses, like taking everything personally, will be very helpful! Because I really do, even if it's not meant to be taken personally. I'm an INFJ--The Advocate. The rarest personality type, apparently. :) Reading the profile fully explains why I feel at home teaching special ed.
    Weaknesses that are bad for teaching is that we're highly sensitive to criticism and are perfectionists. 😮 Strengths are really good for teaching: articulate, passionate, creative, decisive and basically good at detecting bs. 😛
    Something that helps me to curb burn out is to have a hobby unrelated to teaching, along with scheduling something on the weekend, so you have something to look forward to at the end of the week.

    Relating to this even now. I wonder how much is part of narcisstic behavior to self-impose self-sacrificing as if it's a normal part of teaching to feel like a hero to every parent and child, but in the end all the extra stuff was self-imposed. On a separate note, administration treat instructors as if it goes with the territory to have problematic students all year long.

    well I packed up my classroom all by myself this by Year and moved majority on my own. Husband moved the heavier bins. I have stuff in three different spots at my school. don't really like that but I am moving classrooms and grade levels anyway. I need to carve out time for at least plans for the first two weeks hopefully. Enjoy your time with your little one. if you don't get much in the way of school stuff done it's okay. you have another full time job being a mommy, which is super important and worthwhile.

Not sure why I am moving grade levels or classrooms but like you suggested pick your battles. I have learned that I can't control the school or others classroom. I can only do my part and assist where possible. I did say no to things more this year. I have a baby and a 7 Year old. I am not superwoman and not gonna try to be.

    Congratulations on the arrival of your baby. I came across your channel while looking for things related to teaching. I can honestly tell you as a middle school teacher (this is my 8th year) to hang in there as I also teach multiple subjects (3) and have two kids under the age of two :) I refer to years with difficult students as cyclic years and it seems like some years I get the honeymoon year, the we need marriage counseling year, and the divorce year with students (I've taught 11 years and it seems to trend that way). I will tell you that at 5 years, you peak--you get management, flow, and balance and it all just comes together. Plus with being a mom, you will have this awesome bond with your students in a way that you never did before (don't worry about getting old or moming out--they love it--I can't tell you how many times my students have called me "mom"--eek). What you are saying is so relevant about letting things go. I try to tell that to new teachers all the time (because I've also been there done that ;) ). Just like you I was very go get em' at the beginning of my career, but if you over-extend yourself, you do burn out quickly. I missed so many moments with my first child trying to do it all for school that when I had my second child this past March, I felt like I was getting a second chance at being a mom and not just a teacher. Enjoy your time with baby :) P.S. Sorry so long.

    • @toocoolformiddleschoolblog
      @toocoolformiddleschoolblog  8 лет назад

      Haha, I love that you figured out that cycle! I think it's probably true with everyone. I'm crossing my fingers for a honeymoon this year since I will be so bummed to leave the baby every day! :)

      Can I give you a mom tip if you are pumping at school? Being away from my baby, I had a hard time expressing milk. As weird as this sounds, I learned from another new mom at school to take a receiving blanket and rub it over the top of his head to get his scent before leaving him every day and then when I needed to pump...the blanket smelled like him and it made life 100% easier. I hope you get into the day care you want, I know that makes all the difference in the world for putting your mind at ease. Congrats on your new job, raise, and birthday. :)

I am SO excited for the career change, but I know I have a lot of preparation and learning to do, so I've been binge watching all your videos! Haha! I don't know if it's because I, too, am a very Type A, super organized, hardworker who is personally offended by apathy and laziness (LOL) or it its just that you're so relatable in general, but in either case, your videos are definitely helping me to mentally prepare!
