Girl I really enjoyed this video. Your teaching style is so much like mine. Yes, I am going to steal this, just so you know. Students will be watching it tomorrow and I will repeat it at Open House, so that EVERYONE is on the same page. Love love love your behavior management system. I've been teaching 6th grade ELA for over 15 years and i have to give you props, you've got it together.
Bus doesn't usually arrive right as the first bell rings. Most kids are at the school 15-30 minutes before class starts. Plenty of time to use the bathroom. My district has a policy against students leaving the classroom in the first or last ten minutes of a period.
Girl!!!!! I am loving how you teach the students and care at the same time. The way you let them know using words that they can understand and also being a tad sarcastic for them to know the expectations of the classroom! It helps me a lot because I am thinking of switching from elementary to middle school. From your video, I am feeling WAY better about switching up. I want to make relationships with my kids sort of the way you have. Being firm but also letting them know how to better manage their behaviors and teaching ‘em them how to be life long learners of themselves and academics.
Behavior is voluntary and so is defiance. Teachers, in too many kid’s minds are background noise and all too often they aren’t interested in thinking things through since lockdown. All the best to you. Save them if you can.
Something my teachers used to/still do is when the teacher or a student is about to speak is they say "Orient to me." That expectation means that your whole body is facing them,.It personally benefits me as a student because orient is kind of an expensive (or high quality) word.
Thank you. I’m a homeschool mama to my three sons. Two in middle school. I always have to remind them that they wouldn’t be able to do these things in public school (the tend to act like there would be more freedom in public school) Thank you for this video. Actually going to share this video in class with them.
Omg a video for secondary teachers! I teach the same grades this year and I’m nervous. Thank you for this information, I need the giraffe meme! I love your videos, please don’t stop creating content for us! Thank you so much!
Great tips, thank you! Love the Behavior Reflection sheet. I'm going into year 11 of teaching- set your expectations HIGH with behaviors and with grading! Then you can relax a little after the first quarter. It's much harder to go backwards and try to set expectations later on.
I'm not a teacher, but coming from a student in the 11th grade, we had a teacher right after lunch who said that if we needed to go after lunch we can, main reason was that when your process your food it takes time, and that time comes right after the bell rings unfortunately. We also had a teacher that said that going to the restroom when we first come in, in the morning, was also fine because most of us have 2, 3 hours of travelling, and even if you go at your house, it will come again. But other than that, can't see why you can't wait for 40 minutes.
Super helpful Megan. Thanks so much. Creative, firm... You are so right and no one would tell me this. Your videos are making me feel why was I sending thank you notes to all principals that have interviewed me... I answered all their questions, plus shared all awesome ideas of mine; they wrote and nodded a lot, sometimes said: yes, very good.... but when did anyone volunteered this is a good way to set up behavior expectations... etc... And when i heard you say no colleague will be there sharing his/her findings from years past.. oh.. so nervous. Megan... I was a long term substitute of French and Spanish. Have degrees... etc and used to teach at the university.... During the last two years all I did was working as a substitute teacher (I traveled, had surgery, had an accident, a death in the family,, choose other things.... but more or less). HUGE QUESTIONS... I go to interviews saying... or rather, replying to the Principal's questions: What percentage of your class you feel you should be using the target language? I happen to know that realistically or not I should answer 100%. Awesome. I also know on the first days you set the tone for class. I also know from my experience covering for other teachers and for the long assignment that YOUR RULES, ARE A MUST.... I know you will start on a Wednesday and just for 25 minutes but you showed us your syllabus in a visually attractive landscape formatted page for day one, the scavenger syllabus questions for day two... if they brought it signed by parents, you raffle a notebook on each period. Then behavior expectations start... DO YOU DO THAT ON DAY ONE TOO OR STARTING THE FOLLOWING MONDAY? How do I get not to break the 100% target language usage and setting expectations on the first week to minimize disturbances and maximize learning????? please suggest an answer. Merci beaucoup M
I use Vanilla Ice for my classroom management. When I say "Stop," the kids say, "Collaborate and listen!" They stop whatever they're doing and give their attention to me. It's always fun when they finally figure out where I got it.
It doesn't work for every class, but this year in my favorite class we used: Me: "y'all gon make me lose my mind! " Students reply: "up in here, up in here!"
Wow! I rarely watch instructional videos. I just don't have time. But Megan is great! Her fun and snarky attitude is so much like me. Love the suggestions.
OMG! As if I was listening to myself :D It is so reassuring! Being responsible for all the students and their education can't be done otherwise. I mean I can't do it otherwise. And watching this video (and other videos of yours) has encouraged me. Thank you so much!
I watch these videos with the child themselves and it doesn't help with my anxiety about starting middle school in 12 days but watching her really relaxes and reassures me!❤❤
I taught for 7 years in middle school. Your behavior expectations are almost exactly the same as mine. My students have to sign out and back in though, in case of an emergency. I moved to elementary school this year, and I am definitely going back to secondary next year. I miss this age group!
I absolutely loved this video! I start student teaching this coming spring semester in a high school math classroom. Your videos have been a great help to me as I prepare for the classroom. Thank you!
I'm not a teacher, but I love the "We don't borrow each other's stuff." rule. I graduated high school almost 2 years ago, but while in school, I did let someone borrow my pencil, and they chewed on it, and pulled it apart. It was a Mechanical Pencil. I never used #2 pencils unless I absolutely had to. I never let anyone borrow after that. I told them my pencil is the only one I have, even if I did have more than one pencil.
I am totally going to copy you on so many of these things. :) "Pay attention with ya face!" LOVE THIS!! I also LOVE the behavior reflection sheet. PERFECT! You may have only been teaching for 4 years but you are awesome.
I really love your videos! I will be teaching at a bilingual middle school in Shanghai in September. This is my first time working at a middle school, and I'm watching all of your teaching videos to prepare! Thank you so much for this content.
I'm interning this year and I've touched on my behavior expectations with my students. I think a PowerPoint presentation is a great visual and since my projector was finally installed I can give a more detailed run through. Love your videos. I'm glad I found your channel.
This was like hearing myself teach. Your rules are exactly the same as mine almost word for word! I teach in a primary school in England (3 - 11) and the rules work equally well. We have a saying 'Don't smile til Christmas' so I was interested in ' Don't smile until Thanksgiving'. I know all your students will like you simply because you are clearly there to teach! x
Christina B. Taking notes are one thing, it’s a whole other to be dilly dallying and chatting with billy behind you and not paying attention. Pay attention with your face! :D if the baby giraffe can do it, you can too
I'm a substitute teacher for middle and high school. There are a lot of good, helpful ideas here, thank you. I'm considering teaching 8th grade English (a position just opened up at the school where my cousin teaches), but I sometimes get exhausted with just subbing. Seeing videos like yours give me some positivity and solidity for how I could regulate my classes, simplify my processes so we can learn more. Thank you!
THANK YOU for posting this! I’ve seen it before but now that I am full time in middle school I needed to see this again! I struggle with behavior issues so anything else you can share would be appreciated!
I just made a really great presentation with our class rules with help from this, I'm sure with my funny pictures they will definitely remember it! Thank you.
Thanks. Even though I am a substitute teacher this is so helpful because I find middle school to be harder than high school and elementary and I often get the same classroom and they already know me so I’m going to have to start setting my expectations 😉 ..good video 👍🏼
I'm a senior at Michigan State in the Elementary Education program (certified K-8). I'm hoping to reach middle school after I complete my year-long internship next year and your videos are so helpful!!! I follow you on Instagram, too, and I can't get enough! Thanks for videos like this that are so so helpful!!!! :)
I just adore your sense of humor! You have to be relatable to middle schoolers and you truly are!!!! I may use the giraffe meme with my husband and kids!!!😂😂😂😂
Oh I love it! I'm also super strict at the beginning of year... seems to help the end go so much smoother... I love your slideshow. I may have to do some posters for my room this next year.... one rule I have cause in 5th pencils disappear over night.... I keep 2 boxes of pencils and only give out one for those who "forgot" there's on Monday. You better hope you keep up with it or another teacher gives you one cause we don't borrow from each other either!!!
I realize this is a really old video but I just found it and wanted you to know how helpful it still is! I taught 4th grade last year in an elementary school and I am teaching 5th grade this year in a middle school. I was wondering how to present expectations and this is perfect! Thanks!
Thanks so much for the ideas! I'm teaching 6th grade this year for the first time, so I love the idea of incorporating the memes with the classroom expectations.
This was very useful! I have been interviewing to teach middle school, but had my student teaching in a 1st grade class. I am going to use these! Thanks for making this video.
This was REALLY helpful. I'm moving from High School to MIddle School. ✌🏽 My classroom mgmt. basically mirrors yours. (except for raising hand before talking/leaving seat.)
Thank you so much for this video! I teach PreK-8th grade ART but only have training with the younger students. I love your specific examples and scenarios you share. I can relate to it all. Even though we are midway through the school year, I will certainly implement these ideas beginning with my 8th graders. Looking forward to trying it out!
Your videos are always sooo interesting. Keep doing this please Ms. :) I'm a kindergarten teacher in Malta (under Sicily :p) and still I find them so interesting. Keep it up!
As a former female substitute teacher, I totally agree with you about that class, class, class and yes, yes, yes that it does not work with me either....because we are women. A woman's authority is different from a man's ....a man can resort - even unknowingly - to the deterrent and this is why the kind of things that would be ridiculous in a woman's mouth, work with a male teacher.
So much good info. Thank you so much! I'm going into my 3rd year of teaching 7th graders and I just discovered your channel. Got my notepad and pen out taking down ideas from your videos!!! :)
I have to say the bathroom thing is a bit harsh. I peed myself once because my 5th grade teacher wouldn't allow me to go. It was also right after lunch, but I didn't feel like I had to go then and it didn't hit me until I got to my class. I was begging her and she was so uptight and rude and I ended up peeing myself in my seat. That incident caused me so much emotional damage that I felt like I could never trust a teacher again. If they want to go to the restroom then let them. If they take too long then deal with it after class and talk to them about.
I couldn't agree with you more on this! I'm an elementary school teacher, and I feel like this can be implemented in any classroom for any grade. These behavior issues and bad habits are starting to be seen more and more at a younger age now too, and they need to understand that they are in school to learn and not just socialize or play around.
I think that flat out denying a child bathroom privileges is a verrry fine line. Sure, some kids are irresponsible and may take advantage if they realize you are too flexible, but sometimes you can’t help when you have to go. Especially if you are a female and just learning to manage your monthly “friend” 😳 I agree with having a clear restroom policy, but also managing kids on an individual basis if they are abusing their privileges rather than going with a zero tolerance approach where everyone suffers 🤷🏼♀️
My high school was a very laid back charter school (loved it!) that gave students a lot of independent freedom, but through out my senior year I recognized that because some of our teachers allowed us to speak without raising hands or filtering our thoughts, the more quiet and sensitive students were often left out of important class discussions. After watching your video, I understand why there should be certain rules in place: a child's education is the top priority, and someone should never have the right to disrupt someone else's learning. I taught a sign language class for my senior research product and tried my best to implement some of these rules to seventh-twelfth graders! I'm going for my associates in education this fall and hope to start substituting as well. I can't wait to become a teacher and use your #iteachtoo tag! I love watching your videos, and I aspire to be the kind of teacher who understands the importance of a quality education for all. - Hannah
CLASS CLASS kinda works my nerves too, but it is effective. I believe that as children age though, this call and response technique becomes a bit worn. Thank you for the helpful video!
I love your "teacher style", does that makes sense, you are very practical and to the point! You have amazing ways of presenting information to middle schoolers. I hope you don't mind if I borrow your power point I love it!
I just did a long-term sub and I got the job🎉. This video is life and encompasses everything I encountered. I can't wait to implement all of these rules❤.
I love the reflection sheet and the fact that it is exactly what I just made for my summer school group of 5th graders (before seeing this 😁)! Love the memes!
This video was amazing! So much useful information. I'm starting my undergrad in English to go on to Grad school for my masters in Education, and I'm trying to find out as much as possible. I'm so glad I found your channel!
And hands and feet to yourself is very relevant in pandemic 2020! Thank you for your clear management strategies! from a returning teacher to middle school 😄 Melodie
Thank you for this! Really struggling as a first year teacher but found your tips really interesting and can’t wait to try them! I teach History for 6th and 8th grade too! ☺️
I teach second grade(15 years), and LOVE my kids, but I'm beginning to think I'm a middle school teacher deep down. I cannot cannot cannot do the "class class class" thing. I tell my kids no to the bathroom all the time, and expect them to find the appropriate time to ask. I tell my kids to "listen with your eyes". We have so much in common! Haha
+toocoolformiddleschool blog (toocoolforschoolblog) After I showed my...uh your.... PowerPoint, which strangely looked like yours (LOL ....sorry it was late at night, no originality present), I went over the Behavior Reflection Sheet. The Behavior Reflection seem to let them know just how serious I am about dealing with behavior in my class. It comes in handy because this year we are not allowed to send a student down to the A.P. office, no matter what, without contacting the parent first. Well.....if that's the case, there needs to be a clear understanding of what can and cannot happen in my class. So, I explained that they would essentially write up their own discipline and student conference, before I would even speak with their parents. If they repeat the infraction, that's when a phone call would happen. Third infraction.....you're out! By the way, this is going to look really good in my portfolio. Thanks, I enjoy your videos, you are fun to watch...Have a great school year.
+Deborah Christi That's EXACTLY what they decided with our school too! And it was getting frustrating and time-consuming to have to document every single little thing in order to prove that they had been a constant behavior issue. Literally one time a kid called me the B-word and I sent him to the office and he was back in class in 2 minutes because I hadn't properly documented his other disrespectful behavior. So yeah, I'm handing the documentation off to the kids from now on! ;)
OMG...same thing here. A teacher was called a bleep....he was sent to the office....and was back in her room the next day. The only thing that came out of it was "did you call the parent". It's obviously a national trend.
+Deborah Christi yeah, they're trying to stop the whole "school to prison pipeline" thing, but no one will admit that sometimes the behaviors and habits that get you kicked out of class when you're 13 escalate and get you arrested when you're 18. So let us actually discipline them and try to teach them how to be good citizens! And give us like 12 counsellors per school because all of those kids have some horrific family situation that I unfortunately can't get to the bottom of in the middle of a lesson because 34 other kids need an education. Uggghhh... :)
Finally, a video that's NOT about elementary level only. The struggle is real for middle school teachers. If you're not a bit of a hardass in junior high, they'll eat you alive.
True word. You have to have the toughest of skin, and patience....
i came here to say THIS. Im a future middle school teacher and Im already over the extra talking when im talking. Ok that last part is what I feel I will be saying alot lol its not true YET lol

Aww I'm so glad! Best of luck to you Loria!
I know this was two years ago, but that’s exactly what I’m think I want to do, be a middle school history teacher
Yes! Finally a video from a Middle School teacher! Awesome tips.

In what state is 5th grade in middle school? Most states 5th is elementary, 6-8 is middle school and 9-12 high school.
Thanks so much for the ideas! I'm teaching 6th grade this year for the first time, so I love the idea of incorporating the memes with the classroom expectations.
I'm so glad you don't like the call and response, either! I hate it!
This was very useful! I have been interviewing to teach middle school, but had my student teaching in a 1st grade class. I am going to use these! Thanks for making this video.
I appreciate that you are very clear with your expectations! Thanks for the video.
this was great! thank you for sharing.. really like the meme ideas and the behavior reflection sheet!
We can't controll our bladder but I get if your giving instructions
Wow really clever with the behaviour reflection sheet! (especially if the parents are involved and its in the student's handwriting!)
I'm a kindergarten teacher in Malta (under Sicily :p) and still I find them so interesting. Keep it up!
+121990rod How interesting, I would love to travel there someday!
:) I will take around for sure, you are the best!! We have a lot of history so....I think you'll like it
@@121990rod - I was utterly distraught when Ir Rokna closed.
Used the giraffe meme! Works so well for middle school kids!
Haha, it's my life saver! ;)
Loved this! That giraffe cracked me up!😻😂💕💖
As a former female substitute teacher, I totally agree with you about that class, class, class and yes, yes, yes that it does not work with me either....because we are women. A woman's authority is different from a man's
....a man can resort - even unknowingly - to the deterrent and this is why the kind of things that would be ridiculous in a woman's mouth, work with a male teacher.
REALLY looking forward to that classroom tour, since I wasn't sure how to decorate my 7th grade room this year!
oh, and I love the idea of using the memes!! never thought of that.
+Karen Wehling Thank God for Pinterest! ;)
I absolutely love your videos! I am an elementary education major, and your videos make me so excited to start teaching! :)
+Megan E Good luck, you will love it! :)
I couldn't agree with you more on this! I'm an elementary school teacher, and I feel like this can be implemented in any classroom for any grade. These behavior issues and bad habits are starting to be seen more and more at a younger age now too, and they need to understand that they are in school to learn and not just socialize or play around.
Yes! It's such hard work, but I think we're helping them develop good habits for years to come.
Best video I have found over Jr. High behaviors!!!!
- Hannah
Thank you very much!! I’m entering the teaching field next fall in Middle Grades English Language Arts. I’m going to use your wisdom
CLASS CLASS kinda works my nerves too, but it is effective. I believe that as children age though, this call and response technique becomes a bit worn. Thank you for the helpful video!
I respect your classroom management style.
Really glad you shared this!
love that!! so many great ideas! thanks for sharing
I like how you are to the point with the kiddos. They need clear cut instructions to follow or they are squirely. BTW, I love your background!
Love your videos! I finish my teaching degree next year and would like to teach middle school Science. You share great advice and useful tips. THANKS!
Yay for science teachers! (My dad was my 7th grade science teacher. Kinda awkward, but I could get help on the homework really easily! Haha)
Same!! I love ur videos !! 😁😁
I love your "teacher style", does that makes sense, you are very practical and to the point! You have amazing ways of presenting information to middle schoolers. I hope you don't mind if I borrow your power point I love it!
+k av Aww thank you! Borrow away, no need to reinvent the wheel! :)

I just did a long-term sub and I got the job🎉. This video is life and encompasses everything I encountered. I can't wait to implement all of these rules❤.
Middle schoolers have been in school for how many years? C'mon...they know what they are doing.
this was so helpful! I can't do the "don't smile till Thanksgiving" method either!
You must have so much patience and ability to communicate to pre-teens. They can be so difficult! Kudos to you :)
Very helpful! Thank you for making this. I can't wait to watch more of your videos. :)
Yes!! Love it!!! The meme's are good!!
+Sarah How fun! Good luck with your classes! I'm in the middle of studying for an English final right now, eeek!
Thanks, good luck!! :)
I'm a 1st year too! Teaching 6th - 8th ELAR
Haha
....and I just purchased your Behavior Reflection Sheet!
+Deborah Christi Let me know how you end up using it! I have to really make an effort to remember to use it, but then I'm always glad I did ;)
+toocoolformiddleschool blog (toocoolforschoolblog) After I showed my...uh your....
Uggghhh... :)
I can't "like" this video enough! You have so many good ideas :)
Personally, as a former teacher, we did not have time to go thru all this.
