I’m pleased to announce after a test drive that the annoying rattle has at last completely disappeared throughout the rev range thanks to your advice and a cycle inner tube bodge job!!! I can’t thank you enough. All I have to do now is order some heater hoses and a pair of grommets for the firewall. If you were here in Europe I’d buy you a beer 🍺 or some French wine 🍷 THANKYOU !!
Just to let you know I changed my hoses and grommets today. It’s a WIN. Thanks again for the tip. No more noise and (I hope!) no more leaks. The hoses looked pretty tired and one of the copper tubes from the heater core was flattened out of shape at the end. Easily rounded back to its correct diameter which I guess was enough for the small leak which wasn’t visible as I guess it was evaporating rapidly from the heat from the exhaust manifold. 👍👍👍
Hell yeah so glad you have all this info, I have done this job on my girlfriend 92 to switch the heater core to a NB heater core and lines, and replaced the grommets in the firewall, absolutely a pain because it took me and my dad 6-8 hours but it just took a lot of patience and marking the bolts that we took out so we did not forget what went where. You are being more useful than all the pages on Facebook combines those places are just cesspools of part changers not mechanics
Very useful! I’ve got an annoying rattle in my 1995 UK spec 1.8iS. I’ve checked loads of things but I’m pretty sure it comes from under the dash, or is a loose fixing somewhere. With this video and a free weekend I’ll be able to have a look. Thanks mate.
Hi Robin, have you checked to see if the heater core pipes are rattling against tether firewall? They pass through rubber grommets on the firewall. They sometimes wear-out and cause the pipes to rattle.
@@MiataMan Now there’s a thought which never occurred to me! It starts up at about 2200rpm and goes on to about 3000. It seems more prevalent on deceleration. I tightened all the dashboard bolts I could get to today according to your video plus any others I couid see underneath while I was at it. It seems a little better, but that might just be the placebo effect. Thanks for this tip I’ll check it out tomorrow and let you know. Are they easy to find without dismantling everything ? Can I get to them from the engine bay? PS just in case you haven’t already covered the subject, I fixed my pop ups this weekend by redoing all the solder joints on the retra relay PCB. Really easy to do, I found a tutorial on the Mx5nutz forum and so ended 4 years of frustration ! Great little cars though. I love mine to bits.
Thanks for your replies Miata Man. I just checked under the bonnet. You were of course absolutely right! Both grommets look pretty rough and I can reproduce the rattle by gently shaking one of them. I think I’m going to have to order some new hoses and grommets and do a temporary fix probably with some rubber from a cycle tyre inner tube as a temporary fix. A massive thanks for this tip! All the best from France. Robin PS i just shoved an off cut of inner tube in between the heater core outlet pipe and the grommet. I’ll take her out for a test drive later to see, but I took her up to 2500rpm from idle and on to 3000 and there’s no sign of that rattle! So it certainly looks like we’re on to something. I’ll see how she behaves later on when she’s up to operating temperature, but it looks like a win to me!! I’ve had that rattle ever since I got the car 4 years ago and it drives me nuts… I’d better get back to work…
At 8:04 in the video, there are 2 larger connectors on the left side. Big green one and big white one both with about 18pins. What did they go to. Im restoring my 90 and I deleted the airbag system but when i put the dash back in im not sure what those 2 went to.
I think I questioned my own answer. I looked at a picture the rear of the dashboard online. Looks like it goes to the dash harness. Its probably hungup somewhere on my dash after installing
Huh the rare guy who likes the 90-93 dash over 94-97. Honestly the only reason I don't like that one is because the coloring is not a good color balance. When you get tan interior with that dash I find it the most ugly thing in the world.
I've got a cracked dash on my 91. I'm looking at removing it, gluing it together and using it to make a mold with fiberglass, then using the mold to make the dash out of carbon fiber. Is there a way to separate the upper and lower portions ofnthe dash, with more disassembly
Turned out to be the coil pack rubbing against the fire wall. The noise was much louder inside the car vs the engine bay. Glad I found it before removing the dash. Love your videos.
Hey Miata man I don’t know if this’ll get to you but my latest project is putting the OEM fog light switch into that empty port by the steering wheel and I’m wondering how much of this is necessary to just simply get those wires to that port? I noticed the wiring is behind all the heating and vent stuff but I’m wondering if I can get it through that or some thing else
Are you looking for a way to run the fog light wiring from the switch, through the firewall and down to the fog lamps? If so, you can simply pop a hole in an unused firewall grommet and run the power wire to the engine bay.
OK this is a stupid question...my 96 was stolen and I got it back. They cut every wire underneath the wheel and hollowed out where the key goes..what exactly do I need to replace? 🥺
Sorry to hear that. You will for sure need to locate a new steering wheel lock assembly and key set. EBay is likely the most economical option and you can likely get a full matching set of locks. As for the wiring, you should be able to repair and reconnect everything. Good luck with everything.

The body of the dash is one piece.
The only way to separate it would be to cut it.
Do you have a carpet removal and stuff behind the seats? I took mine apart months ago and I’m confused now and don’t want to miss anything

I have a Rattle inside the dash that seems to be coming from just to the right of the heater core tubes.. Any suggestions?
It could be that the heater core pipes are rattling against the firewall.
The grommets are likely worn out.
I will try to find you a part number.

While not a deal breaker, they are not Phillips screws but JIS. A sticky one might be stripped by a well meaning Phillips wielding individual.
