Yes. Because I have just removed my 02 bed. And we were looking at how to easily remove the old rails. And then how to mate the 2 surfaces for the tack welds. So your video clearly addresses these issues. Plus the weld thru primer thing. Perfect. Thanks again.
Another quick method to get the bed bolts out if you have a welder is to weld a large nut on the head on bed bolt. The heat helps unseize the bolt and you can use an impact with heavy impact socket to remove bolts. The method I used and it worked great.
I literally have no interest in 1st gen super duty bed rails... but... you make some of the best no nonsense videos on the interwebs. Now I know how to fix them lol.
Awesome video, sadly without a garage i probably wont be tackling this myself now that it winter but just finding a link to the rail kit save me some massive time. I feel like I probably could tackle it with some welding brush up though (or find a friend who can) I have a 2007 that over all is still in good shape so trying to get a few more years out of it. Thanks

@@InTheShop a heavy duty dolly or some casters on the bottom pallet and you’re cooking with gas! Nice work on the video. It’s one thing to be able to do this kind of work, a whole different thing to make a nice clear video about it as well!!
Great video. I was just pokin' 'round under the F250 I recently bought on Autotrader out of Michigan. (Why, I don't know.) The rail nearest the cab is totally rusted out. I panicked a little but this video calmed my nerves a bit. The rail kit is only a couple hundred bucks. Now, just gotta ball up and pull the bed and do as you did. Thanks. Super helpful to see it done.
Was freaking out when I seen this video and another as I did NOT want to remove my bed! I noticed my bed seemed a little loose. No other videos out there for my case. Also my bottom bed rails seemed to be in good shape. Noticed 3 bolts needed serious attention and either were seized and couldn’t tighten/loosen or stripped and couldn’t tighten. So took a grinder cut the 3 bolts from the top, hammered and punched them out. Went to Home Depot and got 3 close to same size galvanized bolts with big washers for top and bottom and lock washers for the bottom. Carefully placed 2 wrenches together from the top and let it bind against the side of bed while tightening the bottom by myself. Bed doesn’t seem to move now.
WOW, Great work. Many would have simply written off that bed. Florida and Cali folks are probably amazed at that 'destruction'. Imagine if someone invented a low cost alternative to salt that would be effective! Great information and great video!
Love this video. I just did this yesterday. I used a large impact chisel (Hilti) and ended up pulling a lot of the spot welds out, meaning a lot of holes. I'll fix (most of) them, but a sharp chisel or the grinder (as in the video) would be better. The bad part is I saw the read cab mounts --- all 6 have to be replaced and that's a worse job!
Aloha Nathan, Thank you for another timeless video that will help all of us Powerstrokers. Yes...Hawaii has the rust too. I had this repair in mind but I didn't know how it was done. You give me a lot of confidence to try it. Thanks again.
My 2008 F-350 is in need of this very repair as well, and thanks to your video, I now know what is involved to complete it. I have taken my truck to a local body shop, as well as the dealer. Both told me right off the rip that I need to replace the bed, without as much as a glance underneath at its condition. In both instances it was clear that they were not interested in doing the job you showed in your video. Its replace the bed, or they can't be bothered.
Picked up a 07 ford 6leaker. Project truck for me and my 16 year old son. This video was very helpful for the bed repairs! I just ordered the new rails from your description. Might be in by the weekend! 👍
Awesome, and another great how to video. I was wondering if I should go with that Dorman short bed rail kit, but now I’m going to order it up. Nate your the man once again. I appreciate it once again.
Cool video. I would coat the insides of those rails with Fluid Film or WoolWax so they don’t rust out again. I spray that stuff on my F350 liberally every year.
I like fluid film but this truck likely won’t be driven on treated roads ever again so I try to avoid spraying it. I hate working on stuff covered in it.
Thanks for making this video. I'm in the process of doing my truck bed. The rail kit is on the way and the bed is off the truck waiting to be repaired. My truck bed is really in awesome shape but the rails were toast. I first landed on your channel with the powerstroke IPR remote oil cooler install videos which were great. The Oil cooler setup works great and I love it....thanks to your recommendations. I just wanted to say thanks for another no nonsense , great video.
You can still attach the bed rails to the bed without a welder. Simply drill holes through the rails and the bed and put bolts with washers through it. It won't be as neat but it would still work with a bunch of 1/4 inch bolts, flat washers and lock washers.
Hello! Thank you for an amazing video. We are looking for bed rails for our F-250 truck (not Super Duty). I looked at your long bed kit. In the description it says “Before purchasing, enter your vehicle trim in the garage tool to confirm fitment.” What is a garage tool?
Spray fluid film or lps3 inside the crossmembers, cab corners and rockers, you will eventually get surface rust but will never rot out, will need re application about once per year before winter
I did this to my f150 a few years ago only I bought thick square tubing the appropriate size. Much thicker and cheaper. Also I bolted them on with stainless steel bolts and large washers. The one towards tailgate I used the bed bolts and bolted straight through. The ones you purchase are thin and a lot more money. I painted the outside but coated everything in and out with fluid film. Will probably outlast truck. Just another option.
Where did you get the square tubing because i am looking for some and it’s cheaper for me to get the rail kit, i need 16ft of 2x2 square tub and it’s 80$ per 6ft
I replace 3 runners about 48” each total 12 feet. 2 1/2 square 1/8 thick Just checked price at a local supply $5.60 per foot. Buy locally if you can and check more than one place if you have that option. I took my bed off and turned it upside down.
I got a f150 with bed rails gone as well as box starting to rust through on the floor. Is putting a nice new piece of metal sheet under the body worth it? Then realigning the rails and put back together? Or just try to find a decent priced box?

I replaced my crossmembers, also had to cut out every bolt. The new bolts you get now are not the T50 but a allen drive and is so shallow that when have to drive it in, the farther the bolt goes into the nut in clip, the harder it goes and I stripped out every one. The allen is just so shallow, not get a good deep bite to turn them. Every seller I seen sells the very same style bolts. The new ones are NOT as good as OEM ones.
