I have to say the patina finish on the Ratback is fine! probably the best I've ever seen. When you get the bed to roll, you could fabricate a 2 or 3 foot extension to the bed for the longer loads that snaps in place with some hooks and slots. This way you can have the long bed when you need it, but keep the shorter length that you were looking for.
Louvers would be a sweet addition to the radiator. Block all the airflow til it reaches temp then open em up. Lots of newer trucks have that from the factory
Cardboard is awesome for working under cars and trailers. Even use it at home. If you can find the plastic Cardboard that is even better doesn't get wet and brek down. Use it in snow or wet surfaces
@@Dougtroutfisher.4046 it would if the bed was longer. It would help alot for loading if the axle was as far back as possible but it would beat the hell out of you to drive it. I'm sure Paul has or is making a plan. Pretty sure he's going to make it an actual roll back and that's going to solve the loading problems.
I have had several Cummins and never had a problem with heat in the cab. I live in Wisconsin and used mine all winter. Check your flow to your heater core . Great truck and can't wait for the upgrades. Please keep up the great videos and doesn't stop giving the boys the business for being cold .

I was traveling through Orderville Saturday morning around 7:30 on my way home to Idaho from Arizona deer hunting and passed you guys heading out on this recovery. Cool to see the rat back in action!
I grew up on a family dairy farm in central Michigan. Used to go out on freezing mornings to start chores with Grandpa and Dad. Nothing made me smile more than the smell of diesel exhaust on a cold morning, then warming up next to the cows in the milking parlor!
Here ya go. Some extensions that lay backward on the bed and swivel back when needed. Also, some frame type rails that slide back to support the extensions. Everything pinned when in use. Also, a small compact foldable limb saw under the seat for next time.
STIHL GTA 26 4 in. Battery Garden Pruner is a must have.. My grams bought one....iv been using it for a few yrs now around her house. My buddy keeps his in his camper!
We used to block off part of the radiator with cardboard it helped our diesel to warm up more used multiple pieces so could adjust to keep engine happy
Diesel engines are fairly cold blooded. If you watch class 8 tractors running across MT, ND, MN, WI, etc .... they all run winter fronts (radiator covers) during the cold weather (below 0F), so they can stay warm. These covers have flaps, so you can close (or open) as needed.
That was a good problem for your first recovery run, not too crazy and it showed you where the Rat Back's problems are. It'll be interesting to see how the tilt-back is going to become a roll-back.
Thank you, Mr. Paul Cox. You’re a positive Male role model at a time where they’re far and few between. It was great to see you. Call your child a big wuss and then give him your thin gloves so he can keep his hands warm. I love yall! “Hillbilly misfits” from Corpus Christi Texas.
Not just semis lol. I put cardboard in front of the radiator in my Silverado every winter so it'll warm up in a timely fashion. It's not restricting enough air to cause it to overheat, but gets warm air through the vents in about half the time.
The gun in the window just reminds me that its time to clean/oil mine, thanks alot, lol, those were some awesome dunks Jace,👍, great video guys, thanks for sharing.
Hey PAUL, I’m not gonna know at all, but I come from many years of towing experience back when they first started building. They used to build the first that really short days so anytime you load something with the heavy weight in the back it always made it hard to handle. I would suggest with your short wheelbase you try and always load heavy in the front. It’s a cool truck.
Maybe some rails that slide into the bed parallel to the frame, but can be pulled out the back to extend the bed a couple feet if needed. But then can slide back in and not make things too long when not needed.
I had a cummins and the water pump failed in the middle of nowhere. Had to drive it 40 miles to the next town. Luckily, as you see here, they run cool. It was 19 degrees outside. I popped the hood to the safety latch to create a gap to let more cold air in. Made it back with only stopping once.
Reminded me of dumb and dumber, i cant feel my hands harry, you want these extra gloves, my hands are sweaty, you had an extra pair this whole time, yeah were in the rockies. 😂
Michelle,,,thank you 4 the 'Tyler n Jaime' adventure (ad),,,watched it to the end then back to Paul and Jase and another successful recovery,,,thank you
A Big HELLO from Wisconsin where it was +1 degree F this morning and will be colder next week! Good Job Paul and Jace. I love the finish of the cab of the Rat Back - great look.
6:00 I was thinking?? You COULD spin the back tires into the dirt, similar to what is done for "winch anchoring", ... to put the ramp tail, another 6 or 8 inches lower!
I have a 1993 12-valve that, when it was a daily driver, I would leave plugged in below 45°F so it wouldn't take as long to heat up. Though It would start down at 0⁰ you would freeze.
Great work guys, you'll learn about those diesels. Next time leave the rollback running while you're loading up your tow vehicle. Two you may have to put some cardboard in front of the radiator to create more heat. But you'll have to be careful and watch your temperature gauge you may have to reduce the size of the cardboard to make sure your engine stays cool but creates more heat in the cab. But keep up the great work and you will learn about those diesels... 👍
I'll tell you paul. my 93 Cummins with the 5.9 even after back flushing the heater core 5 times (mud came out the first) it still only puts out barely any heat and that is towing a 12000 fifth wheel ..the only way I found is by blocking about 80% of the radiator with a cardboard..still dos not get hot but at least I don;t freeze inside of it!
Gotta ask, how many scouts have been knocking on Jace's door? That kid is a BALLER! Get a winter cover for the radiator, that will boost your cabin heat.
Oh my goodness...I thought for sure when the Ratback right rear wheel slid down into the hole on the sharp uphill corner (with weight of the load) would cause a disaster. But, with the EXPERT driver at the wheel & locked hubs, all went well!!! Super recovery!!
I like your idea Paul of having a short, fold up/under extra bed length extender for the occasional long load! But even lacking the extra bed length, you still made it to civilization!
Welcome to 5.9 diesel world. Warms up about the time you get there. I've had mine almost 20 years, doesn't seem to matter if it's 20 degrees or 20 min. It'll get warm later lol
Nice to see the Ratback pressed into service. I see two upcoming mods for it shortly, side mounts for storing the ramps and lock-in pins at the back for the ramps.
Paul, install a 190 degree thermostat in that beast, you will have all of the heat you need. Use a piece of cardboard to block part of the radiator to help build heat in the cab.

Cut some pieces that fit, we alweays stored them behind the seat! Cold diesels are not fun!
When you cut the length of the roll back I wondered if it was a mistake.
I don't think it was a mistake. Paul never planned for it to haul 4 door trucks. He'll come up with some mods and it'll work just fine.
If it was any longer, the truck would do a wheelie before it leveled out. It's got to slide/roll back to work.
Yes
Personally i think its needing an extra axle on the back.
