The best view of Grand Canyon: Cape Royal

  • To me, Cape Royal is the best viewpoint at Grand Canyon. Photographs do not do justice to the location, which juts out into the Canyon and provides spectacular views on all sides. Cape Royal offers the widest scenic view of any overlook on the North Rim, with the gorge extending to about 270 degrees. Visitors can enjoy breathtaking vistas of the Grand Canyon, including Walhalla Overlook and the easily accessible natural arch, Angel’s Window. Standing above the window, one feels as if they’re floating over the canyon, with railings and fencing securing the area. Don’t miss the chance to explore this unique combination of stunning viewpoints and ancient pueblo ruins at the North Rim!” 🌄🏞️
    • Another attractive feature is Angel’s Window, a natural bridge that you first view driving into the Cape, and on which you can walk to view the Canyon.
    • The area has been inhabited by native people for thousands of years, and the Walhalla Pueblo, covered later in this video, is almost 1,000 years old.
    • For Western visitors, at first a trail and wagon road was built to the Cape, and in the 1920's, the National Park Service made the Cape Royal Road its first major project on North Rim, building the road over 4 years at a cost of ½ million dollars, finishing up around 1930. The road was improved again in 1959 to 1963.
    • Only 10% of visitors to Grand Canyon make the journey to North Rim, and even fewer of these make the trip to Cape Royal. The drive takes an hour each way, and with another hour on the Cape itself, it is a worthwhile but time consuming ½ day activity. But the majority of visitors to North Rim only go to convenient Bright Angel Point, which although impressive, is eclipsed by the beauty of Cape Royal.
    • To me, the best time to visit Cape Royal is sunrise, when you can often be the only group present.

    So lovely to see a viewpoint with no one else present. It looks like it’s well worth getting there at sunrise.

    This is a beautiful spot! I have found that I can never capture the true beauty of the Grand Canyon in pictures or video. It really is a place that should be seen in person to truly experience it. 😊 The ruins look like a nice area to see.
    I wonder if you are like me, I always groan a bit if I am not first to a parking lot 😅

      Yes, it is impossible to capture the scope of the place on video. Getting to be at Cape Royal alone at sunrise is very special to me, so I was disappointed it is becoming more popular, but the other two groups were very nice and interesting people. Thanks for your comment, I hope your vacation is going well.

    Are there any camp sites near that particular area? I'm going to be heading on a road trip. The grandcanyon was on my list to visit 😊

    • @RationalTalk
      @RationalTalk  2 месяца назад +1

      There is a developed campground at the North Rim (about 50 minutes away) and dispersed camping outside of the Park. I do notice that some people seem to spend the night along the road to Cape Royal, I am not sure if the Park Police patrol it at night. Also, there are some areas people park for overnight hikes where it might be hard to distinguish between a camper and a hiker.

    I think you should create a monopoly board game of the GrandCanyon like TaylortheNahamshaHiker has done 2 of for the hikes if NewHampsjire & Appalachian Trail.
    You could do such a great game & sell through the gift shops & online.?
    Also, kind of cool fact card game would be fun.

    Wow, thanks for the information on Cape Royal. We missed this during our last visit to the North Rim (back in October 2025: ruclips.net/video/AoiJ2GoYZPE/видео.html), but we'll have some time at the North Rim during our visit next May and Cape Royal is (now) on our priority list.

      I am happy to be able to provide the information. It is a bit difficult to get to Cape Royal, but I find it well worth the effort.
