When I buy a house with my fiancé, we are dedicating a back room to our future scaly child❤️. I'm super excited I found this video (by someone who seems to know what their talking about) it was very helpful to my research in owning a tegu TV show: Sanford & Sonya :)
Dude I completely agree with him. The requirements of my tegu changed when I moved throughout the states. Washington I did not have to work hard to keep her humidity up vs California and Texas. Texas is the worst of them all because I have to do so much work to keep up the humidity.
Live in Ohio. I just purchased a 3 1/2 month old blue tegu. He is being kept in a 48×24×20 glass enclosure. I have a nice deep humid hide which is under his basking spot. For substrate I am using a mixture of repti soil by zoomed, repti bark and sphagnum peat moss. Keeps the humidity level right around 65%-80% constantly. Ofcourse he has is cool side hide made of 2 bricks with a 12×12 home depot tile.
Leopard Geckos, Bearded Dragons (they get a about the size of your hand not counting tail), Box turtles, Russian Tortoise, Ball Python, Corn Snake, Crested Geckos, Crocodile Skins and Blue Tongue Skinks are all good choices for a beginner. I recommend to you the most a Leopard Gecko because, in my opinion, you can't go wrong with a first time reptile like a Leopard Gecko. If you want something a bit bigger, shoot for a Blue Tongue or a Bearded Dragon. Bearded Dragons are very good animals.
(Questions are at the end, but I had to share this!) That is how I set up my enclosure for my Iguana except way bigger! It was way more tall than flat though, (my iguana was almost 5 feet long) with a huge branch going up to the light. He had a water bowl, and a poop pool too, but we had to keep changing both all the time because he used both to poop in, lol. He would mostly bask at the top up on the branch but when he wanted out he would scratch on the door and I'd open it and he would jump on my shoulder and hang out, lickin my face, lol. Best pet lizard I ever had, except I'm really wanting a tegu now! I actually have been wanting to breed, but not on a big scale because I spoil every animal I have, and I couldn't do that on a big scale. So am I right in guessing that tegus have a large range in their clutch size from about 10- 45? That is what I've been hearing. Out of those though, what is the average percentage of eggs that actually hatch in your experience? And lastly, are they bred once a year, or every other year? (I only would breed ones I hand raised from babies, and know that takes years for them to mature, so that would give me some good experience with the species before even being able to jump into breeding.)
quick question for ya. I got a baby argentina tegu about a week ago and he stays buried in the substrate constantly. He doesn't come out of the substrate at all unless I dig him out. I have him in a 20 gallon tank with a heat bulb over one side of the tank with a uvb bulb over the center of the tank. I keep the humidity up around 65% and the hot spot is right around 95°. Am I doing anything wrong or should I just wait him out to see if he starts coming out by himself?
I notice you have a great love for tegus, what type tegu was your first and why are these lizards so special to you and your breeding projects, also is inbreed Ned smarter than a Tegu?
When ever the tegu is full grown and In a big indoor enclosure does the enclosure still need to have deep substrate or do they stop burrowing when they are adults

Tegu world is donating one to me a juvenile to replace my tegu that passed away. She was my comfort pet and friend. But I want to give her a good home. do you guys sell baby tegus? I subbed to your channel bcuz you are very informative about reptiles. Especially the reptiles I like. I'm building a reptile room but I only want 3 reptiles. A turtle(yellow ear slider), a lizard(tegu) and a snake(ball python). The only new experience for me will be the tegu. I have had a python and slider before. Any info would be appreciated greatly. Do you put heating lamp directly on mesh? Having trouble with humidity on cool side going down to 55-60 / 60 - 70's when good ...hot side basking 95 no worries but 50 humidity.. what can I do ? Also is red heating bulbs bad for tegus eyes?
can you start the baby tegu out with the size enclosure you would when it's adult (meaning keep the baby tegu in the adult setup with enough substrate for the baby to burrow in a smaller section)
how long will the 20 gallon tank last the tegu? Also, is there any substitute for mice/rats etc? I know they say ground turkey is good but most people are saying that they must have an animal with bones like mice. Is there some grocery store meat with bone that would work? My fiancé is discusted at the thought of mice/rats in our freezer.

it is safe to use the coil uvb bulbs with tegus right? i know you cant use them with beardies but just wondering about tegus
