    The novel Blind Sight has one of the best explanations of vampires I've read in many years. They were an offshoot of humanity's evolution with many more higher functions cerebrally and the sight of collective right angles called what they describe as 'The crucifix glitch' caused them gran mal seizures. This with the rise of humanity's architecture with it's many straight lines and right angles led to their eventual extinction. It's a very fascinating take, and a very good novel.

    I swear, the protagonists in every single one of these vampire stories are the most impressive skeptics. This and the nightmare road are the two most egregious examples I can think of. You could have God himself descend part the heavens and reorder the earth and they would ask what kind of special effects He was using to create such a perfect illusion that affects sight, touch, sound and smell.
    "Hmm, everyone in this country is talking about vampires and is keeping us out of their villages out of fear, but this one single village is accepting us wholeheartedly. Wonderful!"
    "Hmm, the eyes of these people are crimson and they all look overly happy to see us. All the jolly people in Transylvania must have moved here and they're happy to see travellers."
    "Hmm, they're avoiding me because I have a cross. They almost seem repelled by force- must not be fans of devout Christians, to the point of it being a complex."
    "Hmm, they're smiling at us like we're on the wrong side of a joke when we ask about this vampire village legend. I wonder why... it must be a funny story or something!"
    And so on, for thirty minutes. I'll remember to carry a cross when I visit Romania.

      My grandparents were Transylvanian. They would agree with you.

    • @jach99
      @jach99 2 года назад +2

      @@andreasfilis9001 Well, it used to be somewhat of a big deal. It's basically the night when all the evil spirits can roam the Earth(also there are a lot of myths about wolves and this particular day). This includes vampire-like entities of which there are several in Romanian folklore(there are dead and alive vampires, and also those that can change shape and who can't - those that can are further classified by the animal in which they change shape) - tho the term vampire isn't used and is Serbian. Some similar traditions regarding Saint Andrew's night are also present elsewhere in the region, I think even some Germans have it as well, and also Ukrainians. As far as I know however, Hungarians don't have any specific vampire-related traditions for either Saint Andrew's or Saint George's, tho any Hungarians please feel free to correct me. I would think that in Transylvania with constant contact many Hungarians would've gotten the bad connotation of Saint Andrew's from Romanians - plenty of such ideas did get shared. I don't know however of any hard proof of that and it's not really a tradition that was kept alive so that one could check.I also don't know if the Transylvanian Saxons had any similar traditions.
      In any case, many tales similar to this one are sort of ruined for me just because I think the suspension of disbelief kind of relies on Transylvania being a far off mystical land where one would suppose things would look in a certain way but as it's my homeland and I live here it's very hard to think of it that way.

    • @andreasfilis9001
      @andreasfilis9001 2 года назад

      @@jach99 Thank you for your answer. In the greek tradition, no saint is related with vampires as it would seem sacrilegious for a God's person to be correlated with evil beings. Also, there was a different perception of the Vampires. They were thought as being of limited brain activity, with no special powers. Usually they were considered to throw stones at people and if a vampire calls you by your name, you should ignore him and you woyuld be safe. They could not also cross water. The similarity with the common perception is that they could not enter a house without an invitation from within. The explanation given for vampiric activities is that couples of lovers used the superstition of the others to meet safely. So, in case that someone approsached them, they pretended to be vampires, call him by name or throw stones. It seems that it worked allright.

    • @jach99
      @jach99 2 года назад

      @@andreasfilis9001 Well, in old Romanian folk tales you find saying such as not even God can counter the power of witches so not much concern about sacrilege. In gener, Romanian folklore has the tendency of making positive characters lucky idiots, while negative characters tend to be unlucky geniuses so the limited brain capacity is also not really a factor.

    This story is OK. It was respectful of its source material, which is good, but was a little too safe and obvious. Somehow "Dracula's Guest", which is superficially rather similar, seems to add more to the genre. (Indeed, the Feast of St. George is only about a week later than Walpurgisnacht.) Maybe it was the menace -- these villagers seem to be rather slow and ineffective, spending most of the night more like conventional, if evil, ghosts than like vampires.
