It sounded to me, like something else like something deeper than a relationship and knowing what I know when I hear this song when she says you seem to move uneasy, I cry because the way that she got an abortion. We all know that this song was about Justin not wanting their baby now. Britney was young. She wanted to keep the baby and have a family with Justin. Everyone around her, including Justin, wanted her to get an abortion. She got the abortion and then regretted it. Her soul was shattered. Then Justin cheated on her. He also broke up with her over text. Then he made everyone believe that she was the one that cheated on him. She never said a bad word about him. I am happy she is able to finally have a voice.

This song is not directly a response to cry me a river, but it is in fact about Justin. Britney wrote the lyrics and the piano riff in 2002, along with many more songs about their breakup that were unreleased. The label thought this one would keep her good girl image, some of the others are, rightfully so, more angry. Britney’s main ask for this video was that she wanted to die in it, which says a lot about how she felt at the time. MTV thought it was about suicide and wouldn’t show it unless she was alive in the end, so that’s why she comes back out of the water. Britney never beefed with Justin, HE on the other hand had many negative things to say about her and the end of their relationship. All of which speaks volumes as to what kind of people they both are. He did publicly apologize for basically turning the media against her in 2020, and for profiting off of their breakup to make his solo career, as Britney was huge at the time. Britney is overlooked as a pop Princess, which she is haha but theres a lot of depth and extreme creativity to her albums, lyrics and especially production. Britney was offered multiple songs that did take that "angsty" route. Rachel Stevens' "Sweet Dreams My LA Ex" was written as a direct response to "Cry Me A River" - it basically said something along the lines of "Stop playing that awful song putting me on blast, because you were no angel either". Britney also has an unreleased track called "Guilty" that also taps into that anger, where she says basically something along the lines of: "If I even was guilty of cheating, you drove me to it, with the way you were being all distant and everything". However, she decided to be the grown-up in the situation and take the high road with this song and refuse all the angsty songs. I think the song is dealing with two topics. One is about her public life, dealing with paparazzi and bad media press, as more shown in the video and a bit less in the lyrics: „everytime I try to fly I fall, without my wings I feel so small“. Literally, whatever she was doing during that time, it was never good enough for the media and the public view. She always fell. The other topic more present in the lyrics, is the relationship with Justin. The media & paparazzi made her start acting crazy, the way they were on her would make anyone go insane & she was never mentally I’ll until the conservatorship & having her life taken away basically, she needed permission to even own her own cell phone & permission to have some money to go shopping, she wasn’t allowed to have any credit cards or cash on her person for 12yrs plus she was forced into therapy & forcefully put into mental health facilities by the police & security, sometimes they would storm her house in the middle of the night & take her & ANYONE forced to take psychiatric medication for conditions that didn’t exist would end up with issues after a while of taking them because they change your brain chemistry & can cause other mental health conditions, especially “Lithium” which she was forced to take…. That’s a last resort drug to put someone on who is extremely mentally ill & no other medication has helped their condition but she was just put on it without even having a mental health diagnosis except for anxiety & depression, Lithium can do SERIOUS DAMAGE to someone who doesn’t need to take it. After everything she’s been through I’m surprised she’s still even here… everything that was done to her.. abuse, medical abuse, not having basic human rights, making money for everyone else & you can’t touch it, institutionalized against her will, no privacy, feeling like a child, your kids used against you if you didn’t comply with something, your kids being taken from you, being declared incapacitated or incompetent yet your competent enough to work & provide employment to many, many people, paparazzi on top of you at all times basically, being ripped apart by the media, etc. etc….. ANYONE WOULD FALL APART AS A PERSON & be truly suicidal I believe… it would make you have mental breakdowns, be so petrified that police are just gonna bust in your house to take you away… it’s ABSOLUTELY AMAZING she came out of this intact, she’s EXTREMELY STRONG. Yeah you might wanna read her book that came out actually. There's a reason that the ending focuses on the baby at the end. Its about the abortion she had of Justin's baby that she was carrying and later regretted it. He manipulated her into getting an abortion and did it at home. No medical care whatsoever to make sure she was safe and healthy back in 2000. That's what the song is really about. So it's more about regret for the lost than about Justin.

The video was actually directed by one of my favourite photographers, David LaChapelle, who is an absolute God when it comes to creating suggestive narratives and giving images and scenarios deeper meanings. A lot of the times, he uses symbolism to get a point across. Other times he gets to know the subject, understand what makes them special, then plays on that. He was famous for his pictures of Britney Spears which were created for Rolling Stone Magazine, which displayed Britney as a young kid, who knowingly knows her sex appeal, but he plays with that 'taboo' and it caused so much outrage at the time that the Bible Belt were foaming at the mouth and crying for her albums to be stripped from the shelves and burned! With this video, he took the concept of Britney as a pop star, and uses a snippet of something most of us dont see, and that is what happens behind the scenes. Shes clearly unhappy, feeling alienated and visibly upset. A far cry from the smiling, polished teen we all knew and loved. The swarming of the paparazi ends up with Britney receiving a bang to the head with a clash with the paparazi's camera, but unknowingly she receives a cut to the back of her head. Caught in the moment of anger, she rows with her companion till she reaches the place where no one else can see her.....the most private of places, her room. This represents her solitary space, a place away from prying eyes and is a metaphor for her loneliness where she has to deal with the hurt. Although in the video she slips under the water and drowns from the concussion of the accident with the paparazi, the original edit of the video had Britney actually taking her own life. Thankfully this was cut out and replaced with the accidental drowning. Once her companion (who likely represents justin) realises shes gone, he tries to save her but its too late. The metaphor for the scene with the baby is her re-birth, and is a symbol that shes being born again to live a new life without Justin. A new version of herself, hopefully stronger and more resilient. The song and video are one of my favourites from the entire Britney back catalogue.

Ok, so this is not a response to cry me a river. Britney said in her new memoir recently released that she was pregnant and JT didn’t want to be a father so basically he made her end the pregnancy. This song is like apology to the baby, not to JT.
Justin Timberlake situation was that his first song as a solo artist when he left NSYNC' was "Cry Me a River" where in the video he has a body double of Britney, and basically he is accusing her of cheating. At the time, he did accuse her of cheating in public and it was all over the media and it made the public turn on Britney. Last year he issued a personal apology to Britney and to Janet Jackson (for the infamous nip splip during their performance at the Super Bowl) where because of mysogony, Janet got so much hate for being a "whore" even though Justin was the one who caused the wardrobe malfunction. That aside, he also talked about their sex life on radio stations which was basically an invasion of her privacy, but essentially this is a song in response to that where she takes the higher road. When she was interviewed and asked by Diane Sawyer (the nasty woman who made Britney cry during their interview and shamed her) if she cheated and Britney basically admitted it but said there's more to the story and there's two sides to it. So yeah, Justin was nasty and used Britney throwing her under the bus for his first solo hit, obviously causing controversy, and this was her response. In the lyrics she says "I may have made it rain, please forgive me, my weakness caused you pain, and this song is my sorry". Even though for a while the media and public turned on her and her reputation was tainted, this song (which she wrote all by herself and even came up with the piano melody) shows that she was and always has been the bigger person. Britney actually wanted the video to end with her passing away and being reborn as the baby but her team thought it was too suggestive of suicide which would make people uncomfortable, so they put her waking up. Earlier in the video, she was hit in the head with a camera which is how she got the blood in her head.

She only has beef with the music video, not the song. 2) Cry Me A River was not his first solo hit, he released Like I Love You first and his album went Gold before Cry Me A River single was even released. His album was always going to be a hit even without Cry Me A River. 3) He didn’t talk about their sex life in the public, he was first coerced/pressured by older men on radio to reveal HIS sex life (he was only 20 years old). They harped on it until he got pissed off and blurted it out. He apologized soon after. And the interview later, he didn’t say shit about him taking Britney’s virginity. They asked him if she was still a virgin, he just answered “yeah, sure.” 4) The Janet Jackson thing was not a wardrobe malfunction, it was actually planned out by Janet’s team and when they got backlash on it, Justin offered to cover it up by getting his PR team to say it was an accident. Then Les Moonves didn’t like that Janet didn’t apologize ‘enough’, and banned Janet from all appearances. It has nothing to do with Justin. Janet said in her documentary to leave him alone and that they are still friends. 5) Britney and Justin have been cool with each other since 2016, when she praised him for being a musical genius and said she wants to work with him and likes Holy Grail, Blue Ocean Floor and Filthy. He also responded positively to her saying she wants to work with him. 6) Him and his mom tried to help her in 2007, wanted to offer a place to stay, he wanted to collab on a song with her in 2007, wrote her a heartfelt letter in 2007 when she was in rehab, tried to see her after the 2007 VMAs performance, supported ending her conservatorship. 7) Britney’s been posting throwback photos of her with Justin on IG, dancing to his song, all as recent as two months ago. She’s cool with him. Idk why Britney fans are still harping on 20 year old stale drama, just let it go.

Then a picture was leaked showing her pashing some guy and the juggernaut kept rolling. He broke it off and it got public and nasty (as they often do) . Musicians do it through their music, actors fight it out in the media, the rest of us go to court. Anyways, Justin sang "cry me a river' (not his song), Brit wrote her own song "Everytime" The song (I believe, could be wrong)?? Is about her conflict with her fame and the struggle with her relationship and also growing up. Both were quite young, they had fame at a young age, they had really only dated each other. there was a real hype about them - at the time , similar to that of the hype btw Brad and Jen So in the song she talks about both loving him and needing him but also wanting to escape and be free and enjoy herself and her fame. Their relationship was co-dependant and toxic. We never knew this about them because they were "the perfect couple'' right. So we have a glimpse into the truth of what was really going on. She tries to get him to ignore the rumours and to forget about the media but he can't . She says she is sorry for the pain and for not understanding how he is her wings etc. In the end she escapes it all by dying in the bathtub ( figuratively speaking) , she leaves everything behind and is born again, free to begin again and ultimately do what she wants to do. No more pushing and pulling from outside influences. As I said before, I think it's brilliant, because she comes across as the victim of her situation and makes him look like an ass or a dick for not supporting her.. Yes I did wrong, but hey it wasn't entirely all my fault, you didn't support me, look at what the paparazzi have done..it's ok though cause now I'm free from you all. I have a happy ending.

I know there was definitely beef between them, but I've never really been bothered by celeb gossip, so only ever caught headlines. Britney is hit and miss for me, she definitely had some bangers though. This is probably my favourite song from her. The video is good, too. The bit at the end where she's going into the ambulance and there's someone waving a pen and a magazine with Britney on the cover is a sad reminder of how fame can really be a crock of shit.

They barely were together for 3 years and during that time NSYNC were at the peak and so was Britney. They hardly were together because of that. So it ended. Fans have made it into a whole lot more of ugliness, especially about Justin, that isn't true. Britney, I'm sure now, was probably having problems even back then and would have been hard to be with. It hardly matters anymore though since he's been with Jessica for 15 years and married for 10 of it. Britney is trying to move on with her life though still having problems. I think Stephen Dorf is supposed to be more like her husband Kevin at the time. Their fight seemed to be about the paparazzi. He'd lost it and felt like he was sticking up for her (understandable). And her saying, they are bad enough, don't give them more fodder to write about. The anxiety of living in a fishbowl makes you/both of them feel pretty powerless. She'd been hit by a camera getting out of the limo. Slow brain bleed. As others have noted, MTV wanted a happy ending. I think she was trying to tell people that living like this was suffocating her, making it hard to have normal relationships, and slowly killing her.

Britney wrote the lyrics and the piano riff in 2002, along with many more songs about their breakup that were unreleased. The label thought this one would keep her good girl image, some of the others are, rightfully so, more angry. Britney’s main ask for this video was that she wanted to die in it, which says a lot about how she felt at the time. MTV thought it was about suicide and wouldn’t show it unless she was alive in the end, so that’s why she comes back out of the water. Britney never beefed with Justin, HE on the other hand had many negative things to say about her and the end of their relationship. All of which speaks volumes as to what kind of people they both are. He did publicly apologize for basically turning the media against her in 2020, and for profiting off of their breakup to make his solo career, as Britney was huge at the time. Britney is overlooked as a pop Princess, which she is haha but theres a lot of depth and extreme creativity to her albums, lyrics and especially production. Britney was offered multiple songs that did take that "angsty" route. Rachel Stevens' "Sweet Dreams My LA Ex" was written as a direct response to "Cry Me A River" - it basically said something along the lines of "Stop playing that awful song putting me on blast, because you were no angel either". Britney also has an unreleased track called "Guilty" that also taps into that anger, where she says basically something along the lines of: "If I even was guilty of cheating, you drove me to it, with the way you were being all distant and everything". However, she decided to be the grown-up in the situation and take the high road with this song and refuse all the angsty songs.
Also, this music video was originally supposed to be about Britney committing suicide and the baby representing rebirth, but the script was leaked beforehand and there was outrage, so they decided to put in the final scene and the scene of her finding blood on the back of her head (to indicate she had been hit by a camera from the paparazzi)

I think the song is dealing with two topics. One is about her public life, dealing with paparazzi and bad media press, as more shown in the video and a bit less in the lyrics: „everytime I try to fly I fall, without my wings I feel so small“. Justin & Britney both made songs about their breakup but his came out almost right away, he wrote it in just 2 hours so usually in the beginning of a bad breakup you’re angry… he did say in a tv interview that he was crying himself to sleep most nights a little after the song was released, I think that’s when the heartbreak kicked in on his end… Britney released this video almost a year later I think so she just felt the heartbreak at the time, she probably already went through the anger stage. I think there’s a lot of Justin’s songs that are about Britney but he would put something in the song to make sure nobody knew but I do think he’s got a lot of songs about her. I think if she hadn’t met Kevin Federline a couple years later & got married that Justin & Britney would have fixed things because he’s said in magazine interviews after the breakup that he’ll never love anyone like he loves her & that she knows him in ways that nobody else ever could… he’s done ALOT of interviews on tv & in magazines where he talked about Britney, you could probably find videos on RUclips about interviews where he talked about Britney but definitely listen to the lyric video of this song, she never said he was violent or had a bad temper anywhere ever though. It’s all about Justin & the baby, the suicide was a metaphor for wanting her baby & being with her baby but in her new book she said that even though she had the abortion that she truly felt that they would have a family together, just after they got a little bit older, she called him her soulmate in her book & he’s called her that in the past as well. The media & paparazzi is what destroyed their relationship & now we know destroyed her life along with her family, especially her dad who was made a millionaire by being her “conservator” because she paid him almost $20,000 a month to be her “conservator” plus there were stipulations that she had to buy him a brand new vehicle & also pay for a new house that was close to her own house so he could be with her all the time or watch her all the time & wherever else that she owned a house she would need to buy a house for her father that was near by to her house so if she owned a house somewhere then he owned one too that was close to hers… he went from not being in her life almost at all until he filed for the conservatorship & working minimum wage jobs all of his life & not supporting his family at all to Britney making him a multi-millionaire over a 12yr period in cash & real estate against her will. The media & paparazzi made her start acting crazy, the way they were on her would make anyone go insane & she was never mentally I’ll until the conservatorship & having her life taken away basically, she needed permission to even own her own cell phone & permission to have some money to go shopping, she wasn’t allowed to have any credit cards or cash on her person for 12yrs plus she was forced into therapy & forcefully put into mental health facilities by the police & security, sometimes they would storm her house in the middle of the night & take her & ANYONE forced to take psychiatric medication for conditions that didn’t exist would end up with issues after a while of taking them because they change your brain chemistry & can cause other mental health conditions, especially “Lithium” which she was forced to take…. That’s a last resort drug to put someone on who is extremely mentally ill & no other medication has helped their condition but she was just put on it without even having a mental health diagnosis except for anxiety & depression, Lithium can do SERIOUS DAMAGE to someone who doesn’t need to take it. After everything she’s been through I’m surprised she’s still even here… everything that was done to her.. abuse, medical abuse, not having basic human rights, making money for everyone else & you can’t touch it, institutionalized against her will, no privacy, feeling like a child, your kids used against you if you didn’t comply with something, your kids being taken from you, being declared incapacitated or incompetent yet your competent enough to work & provide employment to many, many people, paparazzi on top of you at all times basically, being ripped apart by the media, etc. etc….. ANYONE WOULD FALL APART AS A PERSON & be truly suicidal I believe… it would make you have mental breakdowns, be so petrified that police are just gonna bust in your house to take you away… it’s ABSOLUTELY AMAZING she came out of this intact, she’s EXTREMELY STRONG. Read her book… it’s horrific what she went through, like a nightmare or horror movie type situation that went on for 12yrs… the only way to understand her & everything is to buy the book. Sorry this is like a book itself but it enrages me that this poor girl went through all this, I have 5 daughters & I would literally kill someone who would even try to do this to one of them, it makes me so sick to my stomach. Her father should be in prison for life because he’s extremely dangerous to her as well as his family & the hell he put her through should be illegal. I can’t believe this can even happen in America. The system failed Britney twice, they failed her with the conservatorship & they failed her by not putting her father in prison. I know she still walks around in fear of him & the system because of what they both did to her. I’m gonna stop now because no comment should be this long but because I have daughters that are younger but also a 17yr old & 18yr old i automatically think about if someone ever tried to do this to one of them so I’m sorry for this comment. Yeah you might wanna read her book that came out actually. There's a reason that the ending focuses on the baby at the end. Its about the abortion she had of Justin's baby that she was carrying and later regretted it. He manipulated her into getting an abortion and did it at home. No medical care whatsoever to make sure she was safe and healthy back in 2000. That's what the song is really about. So it's more about regret for the lost than about Justin.

The video was actually directed by one of my favourite photographers, David LaChapelle, who is an absolute God when it comes to creating suggestive narratives and giving images and scenarios deeper meanings. A lot of the times, he uses symbolism to get a point across. Other times he gets to know the subject, understand what makes them special, then plays on that. He was famous for his pictures of Britney Spears which were created for Rolling Stone Magazine, which displayed Britney as a young kid, who knowingly knows her sex appeal, but he plays with that 'taboo' and it caused so much outrage at the time that the Bible Belt were foaming at the mouth and crying for her albums to be stripped from the shelves and burned!
With this video, he took the concept of Britney as a pop star, and uses a snippet of something most of us dont see, and that is what happens behind the scenes. Shes clearly unhappy, feeling alienated and visibly upset. A far cry from the smiling, polished teen we all knew and loved.
The swarming of the paparazi ends up with Britney receiving a bang to the head with a clash with the paparazi's camera, but unknowingly she receives a cut to the back of her head. Caught in the moment of anger, she rows with her companion till she reaches the place where no one else can see her.....the most private of places, her room. This represents her solitary space, a place away from prying eyes and is a metaphor for her loneliness where she has to deal with the hurt.
Although in the video she slips under the water and drowns from the concussion of the accident with the paparazi, the original edit of the video had Britney actually taking her own life. Thankfully this was cut out and replaced with the accidental drowning. Once her companion (who likely represents justin) realises shes gone, he tries to save her but its too late.
The metaphor for the scene with the baby is her re-birth, and is a symbol that shes being born again to live a new life without Justin. A new version of herself, hopefully stronger and more resilient.
The song and video are one of my favourites from the entire Britney back catalogue.

Justin Timberlake situation was that his first song as a solo artist when he left NSYNC' was "Cry Me a River" where in the video he has a body double of Britney, and basically he is accusing her of cheating. At the time, he did accuse her of cheating in public and it was all over the media and it made the public turn on Britney. Last year he issued a personal apology to Britney and to Janet Jackson (for the infamous nip splip during their performance at the Super Bowl) where because of mysogony, Janet got so much hate for being a "whore" even though Justin was the one who caused the wardrobe malfunction. That aside, he also talked about their sex life on radio stations which was basically an invasion of her privacy, but essentially this is a song in response to that where she takes the higher road. When she was interviewed and asked by Diane Sawyer (the nasty woman who made Britney cry during their interview and shamed her) if she cheated and Britney basically admitted it but said there's more to the story and there's two sides to it. So yeah, Justin was nasty and used Britney throwing her under the bus for his first solo hit, obviously causing controversy, and this was her response. In the lyrics she says "I may have made it rain, please forgive me, my weakness caused you pain, and this song is my sorry". Even though for a while the media and public turned on her and her reputation was tainted, this song (which she wrote all by herself and even came up with the piano melody) shows that she was and always has been the bigger person. Britney actually wanted the video to end with her passing away and being reborn as the baby but her team thought it was too suggestive of suicide which would make people uncomfortable, so they put her waking up. Earlier in the video, she was hit in the head with a camera which is how she got the blood in her head.

1) Justin made a song about his life, and a video about his life. Like any songwriter would do. He even asked Britney’s permission to air the music video, and Britney said ok. But she changed her mind after she saw it. She only has beef with the music video, not the song.
2) Cry Me A River was not his first solo hit, he released Like I Love You first and his album went Gold before Cry Me A River single was even released. His album was always going to be a hit even without Cry Me A River.
3) He didn’t talk about their sex life in the public, he was first coerced/pressured by older men on radio to reveal HIS sex life (he was only 20 years old). They harped on it until he got pissed off and blurted it out. He apologized soon after. And the interview later, he didn’t say shit about him taking Britney’s virginity. They asked him if she was still a virgin, he just answered “yeah, sure.”
4) The Janet Jackson thing was not a wardrobe malfunction, it was actually planned out by Janet’s team and when they got backlash on it, Justin offered to cover it up by getting his PR team to say it was an accident. Then Les Moonves didn’t like that Janet didn’t apologize ‘enough’, and banned Janet from all appearances. It has nothing to do with Justin. Janet said in her documentary to leave him alone and that they are still friends.
5) Britney and Justin have been cool with each other since 2016, when she praised him for being a musical genius and said she wants to work with him and likes Holy Grail, Blue Ocean Floor and Filthy. He also responded positively to her saying she wants to work with him.
6) Him and his mom tried to help her in 2007, wanted to offer a place to stay, he wanted to collab on a song with her in 2007, wrote her a heartfelt letter in 2007 when she was in rehab, tried to see her after the 2007 VMAs performance, supported ending her conservatorship.
7) Britney’s been posting throwback photos of her with Justin on IG, dancing to his song, all as recent as two months ago. She’s cool with him.

If you dont understand their relationship and the break up then you wont understand the song. It's very clever and I personally love it. Basically he said she cheated on him. she says not really,. Then a picture was leaked showing her pashing some guy and the juggernaut kept rolling. He broke it off and it got public and nasty (as they often do) . Musicians do it through their music, actors fight it out in the media, the rest of us go to court. Anyways, Justin sang "cry me a river' (not his song), Brit wrote her own song "Everytime" The song (I believe, could be wrong)?? Is about her conflict with her fame and the struggle with her relationship and also growing up. Both were quite young, they had fame at a young age, they had really only dated each other. there was a real hype about them - at the time , similar to that of the hype btw Brad and Jen So in the song she talks about both loving him and needing him but also wanting to escape and be free and enjoy herself and her fame. Their relationship was co-dependant and toxic. We never knew this about them because they were "the perfect couple'' right. So we have a glimpse into the truth of what was really going on. She tries to get him to ignore the rumours and to forget about the media but he can't . She says she is sorry for the pain and for not understanding how he is her wings etc. In the end she escapes it all by dying in the bathtub ( figuratively speaking) , she leaves everything behind and is born again, free to begin again and ultimately do what she wants to do. No more pushing and pulling from outside influences. As I said before, I think it's brilliant, because she comes across as the victim of her situation and makes him look like an ass or a dick for not supporting her..

I know there was definitely beef between them, but I've never really been bothered by celeb gossip, so only ever caught headlines. Britney is hit and miss for me, she definitely had some bangers though. This is probably my favourite song from her. The video is good, too. The bit at the end where she's going into the ambulance and there's someone waving a pen and a magazine with Britney on the cover is a sad reminder of how fame can really be a crock of shit.

A few things this was a response to cry me a River, more of an apology. For her part in the relationship is also rumors that this is kind of like a recreation and part of the break up and end of that relationship. Also, the last part where she comes back from the bathwater, they added in that way it wouldn’t be like glamorizing suicide, or anything like that, so it was the last measure.

Just so you know there are still fans living in some fantasy world about Justin and Britney. She cheated on him and they broke up. They barely were together for 3 years and during that time NSYNC were at the peak and so was Britney. They hardly were together because of that. So it ended. Fans have made it into a whole lot more of ugliness, especially about Justin, that isn't true. Britney, I'm sure now, was probably having problems even back then and would have been hard to be with. It hardly matters anymore though since he's been with Jessica for 15 years and married for 10 of it. Britney is trying to move on with her life though still having problems.
