I didn't like the XPS touchpads at all. They felt mushy when clicking, and yet shallow at the same time.
But I tried your touchpads on the HP Spectre 14, and they were really good. So Dell must have gotten the bargain bin models...

XPS 16 is a very capable laptop but $3.5K for that configuration is not a good bang for the buck. I'll wait to see how the Ultra Core 9 fares in terms of performance vs battery life. This model would be a good option if priced between 2.6K to 3K range for those 32GB RAM/4070/4K OLED option.

Great laptop! Great review, as always! I just wish the brightness on this was 500+ instead of 400+. Though it does come with that anti-glare, anti-reflection coating, so maybe fine. Thoughts on this? I do like to take my laptop mobile during the days, at times outside, though generally sitting in my suv. I'd get the i7, 4k screen, 32MB RAM, 1T SSD, rtx 4070 graphics, and likely the darker grey color.

I miss the RAM slots. I know they take up some space. But Dell can use their own smaller, more advanced CAMM module.
When a manufacturer does support its own standard, it still might not take off. But when it doesn't, the standard will not take off at all.

I have an XPS 15 and I think its a great machine. The new 16 seems to have some odd choices. Also if you look at the pricing some of the same things cost more, like Win 11 Home -> Pro is $60 vs $50, if you want 64 GB RAM, you HAVE to get the RTX 4070. Pricing this vs the 15, it comes out to $960 more.
Losing one SSD slot for some isn't a big deal, but I can understand the complaints IF you need two slots.
I had a touchbar MacBook Pro and while it didn't bother me as much, at first glance seeing what Dell has here, not sure I like it. The keyboard seems like a step backwards as well.
I would like to see one in person, but for me, the XPS 15 is where I am staying.
I think I saw that you are in Vegas! Maybe see you around sometime.

Personally, the 2023 XPS is a better device. The escape and function keys should be physical keys, not only is it worst for typing, the 'peace of mind' knowing that when I press a key, I know it was pressed is a big deal. The fact that the RAM is not upgradable and there being only one m.2 slot is also pathetic. Repairability and upgradability should be standard at this price. The screen being 90hz is great but why is it not 120hz, at this price that's not acceptable (the 2023 model is in the same boat.. 60hz... really?). I am glad that in Canada, Dell was selling the XPS 15 9530 at a nice discount, and I am very glad I picked it up at that price.

This is SO close to being an AMAZING laptop. Don't get me wrong, they've definitely made a pretty darn good 2024 XPS - but it could have been amazing with just a few minor things.
The screen should have an option for 120-Hz. Even though it may not be needed all the time and it would play a factor in battery life, it should be an option.
1080p webcam. While this is a huge improvement over the 720p that's been on XPS models in past years (for which there's no excuse why they weren't already 1080p), it still falls a bit short. Given that this is 2024, this should have AT LEAST a 5 MP webcam (similar to several Lenovo models) or 9 MP (as some HP models have). At the price point of the XPS, there's still no excuse for the webcam to be what would have been considered great 5 years ago.
    Full size SD card reader.
Just my thoughts. It's good. It's just not great.

The 2024 Dell XPS 16 (9640) is a stunning machine that unfortunately is not without some negatives. It's expensive, do not like the lack of available ports, not crazy about the separate USB dongle since that can get lost, speaker sound quality while good does not compare with the Apple MacBook Pro's speakers as well as some improvements in some areas but not in others with this year's processor. Positives are the gorgeous screen, battery life, faster RAM albeit soldered in as opposed to upgradeable. The 1080p webcam is a solid improvement Finally over 720p quality and the internal mic array was clear as well. Having said that, I think there are other brands out there with better performance that will also give you a bang for your buck! Excellent review as always Andrew!! 👍😁

UNfortunatelly I must say I think they did kill off the XPS line. The touch function keys and ESC key which I must say is a separate problem. Also I liked so much their carbon fiber feel of classic XPS line.... They do need to preserve it somehow. The only good thing I think is that they may have discounts on last year model you still can get the best windows laptop for some time.

    • @butchdeadlift7551
      @butchdeadlift7551 11 месяцев назад +4

Yeah, the escape key, lack of carbon fiber (I love the look and contrast it gives a silver laptop), downgrade to one M.2 slot, and soldered RAM just make it a no-go for me. Not to mention how the performance difference is negligible. Also, I've got 6TB of storage in my 9500 across two drives - they don't even make NVMEs over 4TB so I'd have to downgrade. I luckily picked up a 9530 i9/4060 motherboard for cheap off ebay so I'll have almost the same performance as this for less than 1/4 of the cost (incl. the 9500!).
Seems like there are far better options unless you want to flex how much money you can blow on gadgets.

Can't wait for the 14' review
My only 2 complaints my XPS 13 Plus have been piss-poor battery life, and a 60Hz Refresh Rate.
If Dell has managed to fix that, then I might get one.
Tho you'll have to acknowledge just how crazy Apple's M-Series and A-Series SoCs have been.
My 14'1 MBP lasted for more than twice the time my XPS 13 did, with the exact same things running. Office apps, Slack, Outlook, Chrome, Edge, YT Music, WhatsApp, and a few other random and work apps, at 100% brightness and maximum Refresh Rates.
The 13 Plus with a 60Hz Refresh Rate [as compared to 120Hz on the MacBook] collapsed so quick, whilst my MacBook lasted me an entire workday. Just insane.
On the other hand, Qualcomm's SnapDragon 8 Gen 3 is still behind the A17 Pro in terms of raw performance and efficiency.
    Just wow.
    Nice review anyways bud.

Thank you so much for your honest review Andrew, I am always listening the xps models from you.
I hate when the price is pumped for unnecessary things like 4k screen. There is really no reason to have such high screen resolution on such small screen, especially when it runs on battery. The same goes to the touch screen, this is a pc not a tablet, the programs we use on pc are not developed by touch controls in mind.
Another thing is that those lower ram speeds and lack of vapor-chamber cooling system on the non-4070 configuration. That new intel chip housing a very decent igpu and igpus have higher performances on higher ram speeds as they do not possess their own drams.
And one last thing is that I still do not understand why we are not able to run these machines on smartphone like chargers, just put type-c to type-c cable and a GaN charger/adapter, this would be super good on those non-discreet-gpu configurations. Imagine carrying only one charger and one cable that are compatible with both your smartphone and your laptop.

Nice PC. Camera is much better than previous year's models. It goes to show they could have put in a 1080 camera on those earlier models but they did not. Display looks excellent. Very little screen wobble which is good. Battery life appears very good. Like the fact they included three USB-C ports. This way two are available when connected to AC power adapter. HP Spectre 16 in. did not include the third USB-C port when replacing the barrel pin charging to USB-C charging. Like the fact they included a micro sd card reader. In this day and age many sd micro cards are sold with an adapter and it is really not an issue to me that it is a micro reader. Personally I do not like the capacitive function row on top and on this model do not care for the light colored keys with the backlight as they are hard to see in certain lighting conditions. Even though some specs are slightly slower than previous years' models they are still more than adequate for most users and should not be an issue. Wish it had a full size numpad. Q. Is the wifi card slotted in or soldered in? Really not an issue since this card will be more than sufficient for the life of this unit. Anyway another great review.

I don't recall if you said this here or I heard it elsewhere, but apparently the graphics card for the 16" only goes up to 60w, while other such laptops go up to 90w. Is that the case, and do you see that as an issue? I'm not a gamer, not really, but I am on the computer long hours day and night, doing loads of every day stuff, with many tabs up, streaming, youtubing, searching, with some downloaded financial desk top software always on with streaming charts and quotes, and doing lots of multi tasking, plugged in more often than mobile, but definitely some of both.

Hi Andrew, I have a question about the XPS 13 Plus 9230 2023 vs XPS 13 2024 9340 model. For 200 GBP pounds less. I can get the 13 Plus 1360p 3.5k OLED vs The XPS 13 9340 with the Ultra 5 at FHD+ non touch. I don't want to spend any more than that as the Ultra 7 is out of my budget. Out of the 2 models which one would you get and which one is worth the money. I am leaning towards last years model as it will come with an OLED and is slightly cheaper. But that's about it. How does the 1360p compare to the Ultra 5. Thanks in advance :)

If I can't have 17", I like that it's still 16.3". And with the bezels almost gone all the way around, I like that physically it's smaller overall than other 16" laptops, closer to a 15" size.

I purchased a Dell XPS back in 2016, I used it for 1 hour before coming to the conclusion that it was pretty crap, from the hardware itself to the Windows OS running at the time, and this is coming from someone who has been using a MacBook Pro since 2010. I honestly think Dell was too ambitious with the pricing, with an almost identically spec'd MacBook Pro 16" basically the same price, and the M3 Max is much better in performance than Intel's Ultra 7 if I'm not mistaken. Looks like Dell has improved a lot since 2016, but I still think it's kind of a no-brainer to go with Apple right now unless you absolutely need Windows.

For me, the biggest reason I will not buy a new Windows laptop this year is because of Intel going backwards. I can see some lags while you were using video editing app. A new chip coming out that is not as capable as the previous generation is unacceptable for me. It's my money after all and I wish Apple, AMD, and Qualcomm can just push Intel away from the competition. For so many years, heat is Intel's best friend. When it's not an issue, less performance than other competitors. I have run out of patience for Intel.
PS: this is a great video! Thank you!

Not a fan of those keys - they might have worked with some type of sculpted keycaps, but the all flat keys with hardly any spacing is a recipe for disaster when it comes to typing accuracy. Only the 155H processor? What’s going on with the 165H and 185H? They’re supposed to offer much bigger performance, but intel has been totally silent on them and nobody has mentioned it. I see some sites list them as mid-March availability, but with no benchmarks at all even leaked it seems like they’re missing in action. For laptop like this, where performance is key they seem like the better processors, will be interesting if they even offer the 185H as isn’t it supposed to be a higher TDP at 45W? Can a laptop effectively be designed for two different TDP’s?

Would've liked some gpu power limit testing for the different power modes as well as timespy scores and fan noise in each. Can it even achieve or maintain 60w outside of screamer 50db mode? I am not very impressed with this laptop. It's rather thick for a laptop with only usb-c ports, thicker than both the zephyrus g16 and galaxy book4 ultra. Heavier by almost a pound too. And has the weakest gpu performance. G14 can reach 115w and book3 ultra can get 80w. And we have the other compromises like it being more expensive than those two, questionable keyboard and touchpad usability, and slower display.
