Prince has written some of my favourite songs, and some songs that I just didn't care for... But speaking as a multi-instrumentalist, I am IN AWE of his talent. I have seen him play a "bass battle" with his session bassist at the time (might have been Ida Nielsen, but I think it was Nik West - either way an astonishingly good bass player!) and I wouldn't say he was quite as good as them, but considering the bass player had devoted their entire life to the instrument and for Prince it was just something he played every now and then as needed for composition or fun... damn. That guy could play. And he wasn't just using guitar techniques on bass, he was using "proper" electric bass technique, and executing it pretty much flawlessly. Just a legendary musician. Chronically under-rated - when you look at multi-instrumentalist musicians, VERY few come close to his level of proficiency.

@@jakejakec5977 I don't think, personally, that Prince was rude. I saw him a lot, and he was always quiet and soft spoken, even when asking for a favor. He never had huge bodyguards unless he was going out, because so many people stalked him, threatened him and wanted to meet him. I know that there are a lot of people who probably felt insulted because he didn't want to talk to them, but he was very used to being stared at, and just ignored it. He and his entourage always dressed up when going out, because they were always on show out in public. If they didn't, they would never hear the end of how they "didn't make an effort", or "looked terrible in real life". I was around a ton of big stars in the 90s, and you cannot imagine the horrendous things the average person would walk up and say to them. Most people just blurt out unbelievably rude opinions on the famous persons looks, clothes, life, partners and choices. It gets old, so stars are forced to keep a distance. They are also always being stalked by unbalanced persons, which they try to keep quiet about, because stalkers LOVE to think that they are noticed and talked about. If some guy was too close and staring obsessively at Prince, want them to leave before they did anything scary. It's so easy to judge if you weren't there, but you can't imagine the awful crap they have to endure all the time. I was interested in show business when I started there, but I very quickly decided that the life, if you are successful at all, is awful, constricting and dangerous. You are never really alone, or safe. I just don't see how anyone could stand it...
In the "Andy Warhol Diaries," Warhol talks about going to a Prince concert and the after-party. Warhol was impressed with how polite Prince was, personally greeting every guest and thanking them for coming. Warhol's driver was a big Prince fan so Warhol brought him along--it was a high point of his life that Prince spoke to him, thanked him, called him by name and shook his hand. Maybe Prince changed later when he became more famous, but I'd like to think not.
I cannot even imagine what it must be like for you people in Minneapolis losing a musical magician with no peer like Prince...the loss of a genius of that magnitude surely must leave a energy void that one could almost touch....but our eternal thanks to your city for producing & sharing such an amazing artist that gave us - and still does - so much joy....

I can never understand why people say things like that. In what conceivable way was he underrated? Underrated by whom? Virtually any qualified critic of popular music of the era acknowledges as one of the greatest guitarists of all. Any musician of the time would say the same thing. If the general public don't instantly equate Prince with "great guitarist" it's because that was only part of his genius. He was also a great singer, songwriter, performer, producer. Is there anyone familiar with his music who says he wasn't also great on the guitar? Sure, there are some, probably here in this thread even, who will put him down because it inflates their own ego to trash someone whom everyone else admires. Their opinions don't count. Among those whose opinions are worth listening to, Prince could hardly be more highly rated.
Prince played under the influence of demons. Anyone could do that if they also worshipped Satan and were possessed. The little music man also allegedly had magical powers and was seen levitating more than once. Don’t pay any attention to this horrible person with his childish songs of perversion and delusion. @Nudist Trump There is no cure for that syndrome. The baby had type 2 and it's almost alwayw fatal. It's genetic disease. That refers to first child, I don't know about the second.
Nudist Trump, Dominick is right. Amiir’s genetic disorder was not something you could cure. I don’t know if his Pfeiffer’s Syndrome was Type 2 or Type 3, but both involve neurodevelopmental disorder and early death. So it wasn’t a matter of his ego, it’s that there was literally nothing that could be done. And in 1996, the disorder had only been medically identified and recognized for 32 years. I live in the Twin Cities and when Amiir’s death made the local news, we all mourned with them. He did a lot locally that he didn’t brag about. He was good man and the depth of mourning we all felt when he died 4 years ago was very real.
This is what Mayte said: “They brought the baby over to us. He was curled on his side, gasping shallow little gulps of air. Because there were no lids to blink, his eyes looked startled and dry. I caught hold of his tiny hand, saying over and over, ‘Mama loves you, Mama’s here.” There was nothing the doctors could do in his case.
You're definitely right about his range. But he didn't stick to pop.. pop stuck to him. There's signs of his diverse musical range early on but definitely started to go in different directions after Purple Rain

I love that the producer of that show called Prince earlier in the day and asked if he was going to be OK with the rain, if he needed anything. Prince said "Can you make it rain harder?"
PRINCE was magic, true magic surrounded by unconditional love. thanks Simon. although I am sitting here crying over his loss to humanity, i am grateful that i had the opportunity to see him perform live nine times, yes nine. he was breathtaking to watch and hear and his devilish smile and eyes - my god they made all of our eggs ripen and drop collectively. No one got out of those concerts alive and the same as when they entered. Magician. Sorcerer. Mage. Druid. Magnificent. There was one and never will be another Prince Rogers Nelson.
I have never known so much about Prince before this video. I know his essential hits, but now I suddenly find myself respecting and even admiring this prolific writer. I prefer artists who write their own stuff.
I transplanted to St. Paul in ‘79 while in high school. In college, friends started talking about First Ave and seeing him there. All these years later and I’ve still never been there. I actually thought about going to the vigil there after he died. Still rather surreal. He made a hell of an impact on music.
“Everbody has their own experience. That’s why we are here, to learn, to go down those paths and eventually you may have gone down so many paths and learned so much that you don’t have to come back” Prince
Don’t forget martika he wrote her entire album martika’s kitchen. Apparently he recorded Kim basinger moaning during a sex session and used it on his batman album lemon crush.
I'm from Minneapolis and spent a summer driving his band back and forth from the hotel to Paisley Park. Such great people and amazing musicians. Never met the man but he waved at me after dropping them off. For this 20 year old, it was amazing!!!
He has been my idol since I was 9 years old in 1983. I was known at school as “that girl who loves Prince”. When he died it was like losing part of my identity. Thanks for this.💜💜💜
I was in line at a pearl jam concert in Columbia, SC when I heard about princes death. Shocking doesn't even come close to describing the feeling. One of the top 2 greatest guitar player/musicians that ever lived. RIP
I remember reading an article where Nas talked about a time he asked Prince to collab and Prince told him get his masters first and that doubled my already high respect for him and his music
I saw Prince live in 2011 in Budapest for a four hour gig with a break in the middle. Some of the audience weren't aware it would last four hours, and there was still more to come when the break hit. So after returning to the stage Prince joked: "Did you think it was over? Do you know how many hits I've got?"
A good friend of my father grew up in Minneapolis, a musician in his own right. He said that even before Prince ever cut a hit record, the guy could play the hell outta a guitar...
Thank you so much for this video! Being from Minnesota I can tell you that he's viewed by us Minnesotans as the absolute best that music has to offer this world! Most of us still believe that he's not appreciated enough for how exceptional he truly was. This video started my day off wonderfully! Thank you.
I lived 1/2 mile from Paisley Park, there was always a line out the door at weird hours for concerts he'd hold at the drop of a hat. Interesting place. Had a few car chases with the cops in his yellow corvette. Buddy of mine is in one of his videos
He once described himself like Mozart. Mozart said that his music was fully written in his head and that he just transcribed it. There’s no question that he was a musical genius.
Prince broke racial barriers, the rules of gender specific clothing, and celebrated femininity in straight black men. That's why I loved him so much!!!!!! RIP

When I saw the thumbnail for this video my immediate thought was, "Oh f*ck yeah, Biographics did a video on Prince!" *click* By the way, Biographics, "May his reign be forever purple." Nicely stated.
I worked at a record store when Prince passed. Within two hours of the news breaking, we completely sold out of EVERY Prince album we had, new and used, CD and vinyl. My boss said the only time comparable to that was when Michael Jackson died. We were out of Prince albums for MONTHS, because all of our distributors were out of Prince. People literally bought every single Prince album from all major distributors. Gotta say though, working at that record store is what introduced me to Prince and my recent love for him. I always knew him but I'd never actually listened until my coworkers played him in the store. Fortunately, Prince had hours upon hours of unreleased and demo material, so we'll be getting Prince albums for years to come! Incredible talent and big heart, he was taken much too soon.
He wasn't "taken much too soon", he was a pathetic narcotic junkie who killed himself on Fentanyl. Fentanyl is approximately fifty times stronger than heroin. He had had pain problems from his feet which he injured by repeatedly jumping off speakers and risers in his live concerts. Just like every very successful musician for which everything comes too easy, he had too much free time on his hands, and we all know what the devil does with idle hands.
Do note Prince is an American had surgery was prescribed pain meds. American health system doctors get paid to push pharmaceutical drugs of their patients by the pharmaceutical companies. And get paid good money. When government regulations FDA approved and so forth is to keep the patient on a drug for this span of time and ween off under doctors care. If a patient isn't taking the drug or a lower dosage of the drug no more money for that doctor. So they keep the patient of the drug far more longer than the health approved regulations for the drug writing excuses in their report. Those drugs are powerful they get you hooked make you sick if you come off of them. Do you think someone takes a pain med and stop taking it and boom they are okay? Then on top of that you have a doctor with a medical license acting like a drug dealer pushing deadly drugs onto their patients so they can pocket money. Prince was in pain. His ankles/hips. He goes to the doctors asking for help and its his fault?
As a Twin Cities native with a cousin 10 yrs my senior nextdoor, I grew up surrounded by his his music throughout the 80s. First Ave is just as freaking amazing as it seems in Purple Rain. There's currently an amazing exhibit at the MN Historical Society where he heavily features. He was absolutely devoted to his hometown & we loved him back. I know more than one person who opened their front door to find him proselytizing for the Jehovah Witnesses. Apparently he was genuinely nice & soft spoken. PS- Paisley Park isn't in Minneapolis. It's in Chanhassen.
I've been in love with Prince since I was 10. I still can't believe he's gone from this earth but I feel so privileged to be alive the same time he was.
Prince died my senior year at the University of Minnesota. Before that I resented Minneapolis considering it a cesspool without culture, and then all at once the entire city went into mourning. Every light in the city that could change color was set to purple for weeks. Artists from all over the world were performing free tributes to Prince at Paisley Park. I once got on a LRT train and everyone was singing _When Doves Cry._ Prince really did go out of his way to put Minneapolis on the map as a cultural center, spending millions on local talent in numerous arts. It was bittersweet because I realized that Minneapolis actually did have culture ...and it had just died. RIP, man!
He did father a child who sadly died only days after birth. Was kind of shocked that this was overlooked here. I think it's sad that we have to lose someone or come very close to it before we truly realize the value that person brings to our lives. I will always be so grateful for growing up as a teenager in the late 80s & experiencing Prince's musical career as it unfolded. I was in awe of him then & continue to be to this day. I wish he was able to spend more time among us, but still so grateful for the time he was here. How ironic that he would write a song with a title, "Nothing compares to you" because that's exactly what I think of when he comes to mind. Rest in peace, Prince.💜💜💜
I just want to point out as someone from Minneapolis, how rare it was that he came out of this city. People here are usually less likely to do big and bombastic things, because that will get you the most disapproving side eye. People from Minnesota don't dance or openly flaunt their sexuality. Heck, we barely even make eye contact. Prince was always 100% himself though. Even when he was a Jehovah's Witness, he still stayed true to himself, and that is the most inspiring thing about him. Also, I know a few people that went to highschool woth him. They said even then he was popular and well liked while not selling out.
I spent a lot of time in Minneapolis as well as a fair number of other cities around the country. Minneapolis by far had the nicest people. It was also in my opinion one of the spots where people were more comfortable being themselves. There wasn't a glaring stereotype of what a Minnesotan was like.
Prince was a musical genius! Taught himself to play every instrument and constantly reinvented himself as an artist. He had his demons but he was truly one of a kind.
Some bad research here. Prince changed his name to that symbol to get out of his record contract. That symbol is an ancient mid-eastern symbol (I forget the culture) for.... a Prince.
Im so upset with myself, that i didnt see Prince and appreciate his amazing work until later in my life in adulthood without prejudice, unlike when i was younger. PURE genius. Prince's music and lyrics give hope. I hold him in the highest regard.. i miss him
I knew Prince was insanely prolific, but-- honestly-- was blown away by all the music, groups and collaborations mentioned in this video. Basically unfathomable. May he Rest In Peace.
To be honest, I think it would be something conceptually hard to say, to have NEVER heard something written or performed by Prince, MJ, or Elvis, while living anywhere in the last 40 years! 🤔
Up. Prince had a son. He died shortly after birth. He and his wife had produced another child but had a miscarriage and after that he decided never to have kids.
I remember buying "Sign ☮ the Times" as a freshman back in '87 and having my mind blown out of my skull. I'd been a fan since "1999" came out and this was far beyond anything he'd done before.
Incredible artist that has influenced, excited and amazed me for over 30 years, I had the privalege of going in the artists entrance after breaking my leg in Glasgow and seeing him again in Edinburgh. His music has got me through tough times and great times, his abilities and work ethic is something I could never achieve but Ill never stop trying. A great great loss to all and whether youre a fan or not his talent will have touched your life in one way or another. I still have my tickets from the gigs and one day Ill have a cloud guitar (Ive said this for 30 years) that I can play to help me through my difficulties. I finally got a tattoo (terrified of needles and anything associated) of the love symbol on my wrist and every time I play the guitar its in contact with the guitar and I hope it helps me play. Superb talent, proud to have experienced it live.
He was a genius and geniuses like Prince only come once in a lifetime. I have been a huge Prince fan for the majority of my life, since I was very young. I was devastated when he died. Prince will always be my favorite musician of all time.

I was just a little boy when Purple Rain blew up. My older sisters adored him and I wished I could play like him. Unfortunately (for me), his cutting room floor had more talent than my best, in-the-zone effort could ever create.

lets be honest here, when has the "Parental Advisory Explicit Content" label ever stopped someone from getting an album? I remember being in my teens and greatly preferring the explicit versions and when I would go buy a cd, I chose that and my parents didnt mind at all. It seems to me that the only people that really cared about that were the parents that were deeply religious and wanted their children kept in a metaphorical innocent bubble in the world. lol
As well: the bands who whined and complained about the explicit lyrics label on the front were whiners, sissy boys, glam musicians, and terrible lyricists, one and all... Nice comment, noted.

Prince is a local legend here in Minneapolis, we miss him greatly.

Yes!!!!
The most underrated guitar player.
Spend your precious time with Jesus, the only real Prince, and repent or you will end up with the 20-instrument demonic virtuoso tortured beyond your wildest imagination for all eternity... please!

One wrong fact: He had a son named Amiir Nelson who died one week after he was born. The boy had Pfeiffer syndrome.
With Mayte, right?
@@a_bookish_gemini Yes, they tried it even a second trial resulting in a miscarriage. It is so sad.
This is what Mayte said:
“They brought the baby over to us. He was curled on his side, gasping shallow little gulps of air. Because there were no lids to blink, his eyes looked startled and dry. I caught hold of his tiny hand, saying over and over, ‘Mama loves you, Mama’s here.”
There was nothing the doctors could do in his case.
Prince was my first true love I fell in love with his music and followed him till the day he died. The world is less of a beautiful place without him.
Prince was even better than most people knew. He could REALLY play. From classical to jazz to blues, he was a monster that stuck to pop.
You're definitely right about his range. But he didn't stick to pop.. pop stuck to him. There's signs of his diverse musical range early on but definitely started to go in different directions after Purple Rain
Prince is always and forever will be his own.

That Super Bowl performance (as well as the game surrounding it) will always be near and dear to my heart. Purple Rain in that downpour was incredible.
He sang Purple Rain in the damn rain during halftime at Super Bowl XLI!!!
That was the moment I “got it”.
I transplanted to St. Paul in ‘79 while in high school. In college, friends started talking about First Ave and seeing him there. All these years later and I’ve still never been there. I actually thought about going to the vigil there after he died. Still rather surreal. He made a hell of an impact on music.
Now if all the folks who helped destroy it only felt the same...🤔

Thank you so much for this video! Being from Minnesota I can tell you that he's viewed by us Minnesotans as the absolute best that music has to offer this world! Most of us still believe that he's not appreciated enough for how exceptional he truly was. This video started my day off wonderfully! Thank you.
I lived 1/2 mile from Paisley Park, there was always a line out the door at weird hours for concerts he'd hold at the drop of a hat. Interesting place. Had a few car chases with the cops in his yellow corvette. Buddy of mine is in one of his videos
I knew Prince was prolific but I had no idea he was THAT prolific!
He once described himself like Mozart. Mozart said that his music was fully written in his head and that he just transcribed it. There’s no question that he was a musical genius.
@@ItsJustLisa That seems accurate to me.
Good job on this biography. Very rarely do I see someone not make somekind of snide comment about Prince's height.
He was short. But he wore heels. It became his thing.
Prince broke racial barriers, the rules of gender specific clothing, and celebrated femininity in straight black men. That's why I loved him so much!!!!!! RIP

When I saw the thumbnail for this video my immediate thought was, "Oh f*ck yeah, Biographics did a video on Prince!"
*click*
By the way, Biographics, "May his reign be forever purple." Nicely stated.
Prince the devil-worshipper is in hell. Throw his awful, childish, demon infested music away and worship Jesus, the real Prince.
Prince dared to break new ground in 80s pop with his versatility.
Biographic summed up: Prince literally could do anything better than anyone

He's the reason they attempt to censor music. WHAT A LEGEND.

“Bombastic”; I love it. Lol
