I met Bill in Hollywood. He used to frequent the restaurant where I was a cook. Once I brought him his salad-to-go, and when I gave it to him I put out my hand and just said, "Big fan" with a smile. He instantly put down his salad and took my hand and vigorously shook it, and then engaged me in normal conversation without pretense for a few minutes. I'm no betazoid, but I felt nothing but humble and generous human qualities from him, he was genuinely happy to talk to some random chef in a restaurant for no reason at all. All actors have a job to do and it takes a certain kind of personality. All actors in Hollywood are adversarial unless they are very good friends and they all talk shit about each other constantly. I liked Bill, he's a decent fellow. He always came to our little cheese shop for a salad and always tipped well. I don't believe any bullshit gossip about him.

I have only heard good things from him and Nimoy by his fans.
The two were the best character persons to get fandom. They seemed to really enjoy both make fun of it and revel in it in good ways.
Better them than a lot of us... I don't know if I would like that type of attention... but then again I'm an introvert. I would die a little inside having people notice me, even if they didn't bug me for an autograph or anything.
These guys seemed to use it to live longer and make others feel better.
Good decent people who found reveled and one still does in their lives.

Thank you for sharing this! Day to day regular interactions with people tell the truth of anyone’s character. One appalling so-called “Hollywood celebrity” example: Ellen Degeneres unleashed unjustified anger to a waitress for having the audacity of letting Ellen’s eyeballs see her nail polish that was chipped from working too hard! The waitress lost her job over Ellen’s complaint to the restaurant’s manager! Everyone is human. No one is perfect. So just be TRULY decent and nonjudgmental to all you meet.

It's likely that Nimoy cut himself off from people, including Shatner, simple because he didn't want his friends remembering him as frail and sick. It's a reaction that many people with a lingering illness have.

Nimoy cut him off because Shatner was doing a documentary on "The Captains" (of the Enterprise) and wanted Nimoy to be apart of it. Nimoy was getting ill and didn't want to be filmed. Shatner kept trying to talk him into it, and then secretly filmed him without his permission. When Nimoy found out, he was pissed and that was that; or at least that what I heard.

Not only did it capture the grief losing a lifelong friend, it also exemplifies respect & true friendship across differences. When Scotty started playing Amazing Grace with his bagpipes.....

I like Shatner. I don't see arrogance now. I see a man trying to reconcile with many people, trying to find out what he's done to cause grief, and he is 85 and tireless. Appears at many functions and charities. Keeps busy and looks healthy.
I don't think he had a falling out with Nimoy. The COPD overtook Nimoy. My husband also had COPD. The disease is terrible when the complications arise. We try to protect our husbands so that the rest of the world does not see them in this weakened state. My hubby, who was also an entertainer passed away from the same thing as Nimoy only a couple of weeks later. He was unable to speak to many of his friends the last year of his life. Many people came to the funeral and there were a few who should have been there but if there was a commitment of course they could not attend. Shatner committed to appear at an important event but did his best to have someone at Nimoy's funeral to represent him. I truly believe they were good friends and now as Shatner is in his mid 80s, I applaud him for truly reaching out to not only continue to entertain us but to try to leave behind a legacy as a good person. I think we know more about Shatner's life that we do of our own friends around us. So what if he has an ego.

Shatner only allowed Nimoy to stand with him on stage. The co stars always mentioned about Shatners arrogance. And also that Shatner was very controlling on the Star Trek series. @@anthonylogiudice9215 He doesn't tend to talk about any political material either, to his credit. He's not interested in stuff like that. According to Shatner and a few people, the alleged fallout happened after Shatner did The Captains documentary. Nimoy didn't want to be involved with it at all, for whatever reason, and asked Shatner to keep him out of it. Shatner went behind his back and had Nimoy go through what Nimoy believed to be an interview but it was actually material that they knew they were going to use for The Captains. That was the alleged breaking point where Nimoy allegedly said he had had enough of Shatner's antics and their relationship fell apart.
Now what Shatner did was kind of shitty. To his credit, he has acknowledged that he didn't handle that situation the best way, and he regrets that their relationship fell apart in Nimoy's final years. Shatner wanted to be there for Nimoy. I don't think he truly understood why Nimoy was so upset and he wanted to talk about it and figure out a way to make amends for it. Shatner tried to reach out to him several times, but Nimoy never contacted him again.
You can tell that it is one of Bill's biggest regrets to where it still hurts him that their relationship fell apart in Nimoy's final years. He clearly misses Nimoy a great deal and he wishes he could still see Nimoy again. You can tell just talking it about it on this video is bringing him to tears. This is not a man who didn't care that Nimoy died. I think he just handled it his own way: going to the funeral was just something that was going to break him, he would have to accept that Nimoy is gone and he clearly still hasn't accepted that fact (can't blame him) and he wanted to do something good and do something in Nimoy's honor in his own way. So anyone saying that Shatner doesn't care about Nimoy is clearly wrong. That is something that no matter how flawed Shatner is, you can't question how much he truly loves Nimoy.

I know COPD can leave its victims very incapacitated, literally gasping for air as they depend on a constant flow from an oxygen tank. Nimoy's last appearances in the new series of Star Trek films required much computer effects to digitally erase the breathing tubes from his face and recreate his mouth movements to match his prerecorded, foleyed-in dialog. And that was when he was more than a year from the end. Some COPD patients are initially mobile (with help from a power chair) but eventually most become bedridden. It's an embarrassing end, totally lacking in dignity. I have heard Nimoy withdrew from many friends in the last months of his illness because of his feeble state and appearance. Johnny Carson (who also died from COPD) backed off from all but his closest family in a similar manner.

In cases like that, actually sitting down to discuss it would likely cause friction rather than resolve anything. Leonard Nimoy also spent a lot of his final months (last couple of years) primarily in his home, due to his failing health, not going out or seeing really anyone but family. I believe it was his widow who said this, she even elaborated that they stopped going to their cabin further north (Tahoe?) because it was at a higher elevation and Nimoy found it difficult to breathe, so they'd go to their cabin and he'd be stuck inside on oxygen. He really suffered greatly in his final years. Maybe it's easier for Shatner to say he doesn't really know - maybe he actually doesn't, as Nimoy never told him directly, he just ghosted him. Either way it's unfortunate. Love is funny, you don't always have to like each other, but perhaps Nimoy still loved him, he just had other priorities.

Thing with shows like Star Trek is it will revolve and evolve around a very select set of individuals. Both Shatner and Nimoy were really the two main arcs of the show, with the rest obviously being in supporting roles. Again I would think Shatner would have a bigger role as opposed to Nimoy simply because Bill was Capt Kirk. Kirk was in charge of the Enterprise and so that was the premise of the show. I would go as far to say, the Enterprise was a bigger “ star “ than some of the supporting cast members. It would probably stand that there may have been a little jealousy at play from the minor leagues and over time it’s just manifested into rumour and dislike of Shatner for no real reason. Reality is if your a Trekkie, you know who the stars are, you know their name and who played whom. I would imagine that possibly eight times in ten, if you had the chance to meet one of the stars, you would go for Shatner or Nimoy. That’s no disrespect to the rest of the cast. It’s simply an observation. Live long and proper people 🖖

It is possible that he was told not to go to the funeral. I have seen that happen on several occasions within my own family and friends. It's an unfortunate final middle finger to the person receiving the message, but it absolutely does happen.
If that happened, I can understand why he wouldn't want to publicize that (perhaps as much out of respect for Nimoy as for the light it would cast him in personally).
Perhaps he was simply honouring Nimoy's final wishes by not attending?

Remember, shatner is the good guy... As long as you ignore pretty much everyone he worked with on Star Trek. Even on his own show, Walter calls him out for being a brute. Nichols has called him out, Takei, and eventually Nimoy wanted nothing to do with him.

It seems sad, but this happens more often than people might think. Old friends, even siblings, will just stop communicating because of various different reasons, they might simply change with age and lose common interests, have a disagreement, or something small might have offended one unknown to the other; who knows? But then they grow apart as time passes until one dies. The best thing to do then is reflect and celebrate all the good memories and the happy times that they did share in life.

And as for George, when I met him near London, 12 or 13 years ago, he was in a pantomime, and giving away autographs for free, and Shatners worth many many times more. I met him in 2005 at an autograph show, he signed 5 autographs, with no one else around, and didn’t even look up. Well I had just spent £150 on autographs, and was not having it, so I said “thanks William” quite loudly, too which he looked up, and said “thank you” what a prick.

She was in so much pain and didn’t want to take morphine or other drugs because she wanted to be herself as long as possible.
I believe that it was probably Leonard Nimoy who pulled back (without realizing the effect it had on his friend) due to his health problems and lack of energy to be a friend like before. Nobody’s fault. It’s just the way some people deal with sickness. Maybe his wife protected LM too from things too. I’m also a firm believer that true friendship will prevail in the end. They didn't "all hate him". There were some who were very good friends like Kelly and Nimoy while others were not as friendly like Takei and Doohan. By the way Takei was known to be very jealous and always wanted a bigger role on ST. He was jealous not only of Bill Shatner but even Walter Koenig when he first arrived on ST. He was pushing to get his own command of a starship which he eventually did in the final ST movies but failed to realize it would only be a sideshow because the main action would be on the Enterprise.

@@LA_Commander Takei is a whiny, limited talent bigot, intolerant of opinions other than his own. I put zero stock in anything he says. That said, yes Kelly and Nimoy got along with Shatner, but they were established actors by then, had guest starred and in effect had made their mark, albeit very small successes at that point. I reference what the great TV character actor Richard Herd told me at a Chillerthon while signing autographs and we chatted. I told him "you worked with Shatner, who has the reputation of being the biggest jerk in show business". He said "Yes and that reputation is well-earned". Wow. But then he followed up with "Well, I shouldn't knock him, he was OK to me on T.J. Hooker for 4 years.". That's the point, Shatner wanted the spotlight and would only cede it to those he felt were "worthy" I guess. But, for the record I think I'd put up Shatner's career, both before and after Star Trek way, way over Takei's. Takei has done nothing other than cash in on his feud with Bill and coming out of the closet.

The kings and queens of old who brought their people to war or famine or to other ilk would say the same thing.
Republics from the Dutch to America would say they were doing things for needs of the many... while screwing over the few or the many too.
Most tyrants or group of tyrants ruling together did not do so proclaiming to serve a few or themselves. Ever.
Because nobody would follow such lunacy.
Was always for the "greater good" for all types of tyrannical or inequitable reigns under all political systems and/or economic systems.
It is for the masses and each of us individually to discern the genuineness and reasonableness of various leaders' or representatives' causes. To be brave and speak out and/or fight against deceptions and charlatans and not pretend with them when it is apparent that it is not for the greater good but exploitation, coercion, blackmail, bribery, thuggery, manipulation, etc. and has little to nothing to do with the greater good.
Democracy isn't mob rule. Mob rule is when a thug or group of thugs can convince or scare the people into submission, perhaps inducing an apathy or impotence that in turn invokes a type of Stockholm syndrome, a delusion that the thugs or thug is really a representation of your own thoughts and needs even when it's utterly at variance.
Otherwise, why even have elections? Why even have representative republics? Why even both feigning rights with a constitution that is supposedly comes from not just a simple democratic majority, but a required larger super majority?
And why would anyone want to satisfy the needs of a few when the needs of the many are held in contempt?
Do not confuse the pretends of dictators for the results of democracies.

    Mr. William Bill Shatner,
Hi Bill! I am 67 years old and have watched you most of my life throughout your career. Although I was never a Star trek fan I saw you perform in Twilight Zone's "Creature at 20,000 Feet", also your Rocket Man solo (fabulous) and most recently on an American pickers episode about decorating your office and the house with the millstone! Of course you were a class act working with George Foreman, Henry Winkler and nasty Terry Bradshaw on "Better Late Than Never", a wonderful show in 2016.
My wife and I both enjoyed Better Late Than Never although Bradshaw's nasty ways probably got it cancelled! Winkler too! Only you and old George where the class acts.
I have been meaning to write to you for a very long time. My wife and I met when we were 15 years old. We married at eighteen and recently celebrated our 49th anniversary. She is still my best friend. We were talking this morning and your name came up. My wife Madelyn said, "it is time for you to write to Bill Shatner". My wife and I are both Christians.
We know you are not religious Bill but that you view yourself as an Animist. Animists believe in a supernatural power that organizes and animates the material universe - the attribution of a soul to plants and inanimate objects.
Christians often feel those things too, but add their faith in a "creator of all things" and the reality and Faith of personally knowing Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. I have believed in Jesus since I was 12 years old, my wife since she was 18.
During the 49 years of our marriage we have experienced many unexplained things and events. Nothing less than miracles. So many in fact that I cannot begin to tell them here. These events cemented our faith in Jesus.
When I was 16 I went through a phase where it was hard for me to believe most of the Bible. I doubted the stories of "The Parting of the Red Sea" and "Noah's Ark" to name a couple. In fact I became weak in my faith all-together until I studied Bible prophecy! I was led to this study after reading the "Late Great Planet Earth" by Hal Lindsey. I strongly urge you to read Hal's book.
Much of the Bible's prophecies have already occurred. All have taken place exactly as written, in many cases hundreds of years after being written.
If someone told you that one day you would be on a TV show with George Foreman traveling the world - back when you were filming "The Twilight Zone" you would have been shocked when it's so a accurately came to pass. You would wake up and become very intrigued indeed! Well I must say that Bible prophecy is even more profound than that Bill.
The Bible says that the Jews are God's chosen people. However did you know that the Bible accurately predicted that all the Jews would be driven from their land, that they would become despised and rejected and scattered over every corner of the Earth. This occurred exactly as written.
Consider what Hitler attempted to do to all of the Jews when he attempted to extinguish them.
Next the Bible says that the Jews would regain Israel and that the Jews would return in mass! Now the Jews are returning to Israel so fast, from so many places globally, that over 100 languages are spoken in Israel today.
The Bible next predicts that Jerusalem will become a "cup of trembling" to the whole world! Armageddon will come. A huge war unlike the world has ever seen or experienced.
The Bible also warns that Satan is roaming the Earth seeking whom he might devour. Satan knows his time is short. Soon he will impose his "666 mark" on everyone - that no man may "buy or sell" unless he takes the mark. But God warns us to not accept the Mark or we will lose our place with Him and be eternally damned.
Bill, the Bible says only a fool says there is no God. The Bible says that we only need to look out into the universe to know that God is real!
In the book of Romans, chapter 1, verses 18, 19 and 20 it says: for the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God has shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and godhead; so they are without excuse.
In John 3:16 it is written "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life".
Bill, when we acknowledge our faith in Jesus before men and participate in believer's baptism (as an adult) the Bible tells us we will also receive the Holy Spirit as our comforter. Why should we do this? Because God says we are all evil, sinfull and as "filthy rags". That no one is righteous, no not one.
Just as animals were slaughtered at the altar in the old testament - Jesus was slaughtered on the cross that we may be forgiven our sins and trespasses. Jesus became God's sacrifice for us, for our sins. Not just sins in our past but every day until we die.
The Bible tells us that Jesus will return to Earth two more times. Soon he will come without warning to call His Christians home. Jesus will show up in the twinkling of an eye. First the dead believers will rise from their graves to meet him in the air, followed next by all Christians still living - who will be given new bodies that are not corruptible. This event will be followed by 7 years of great trouble on the earth for mankind.
Finally, Armageddon will ensue and Jesus will return a final time to stop Israel from being wiped out. Jesus will then judge the entire world.
    It is easy to become a Christian Bill. All someone needs to do is acknowledge faith in Jesus Christ as their Redeemer. To do that just say this simple prayer;
"Jesus I believe in you and I accept you. I know that I am a sinner. Please forgive me of my sins and my trespasses. I will follow You and do my best to be like you. I will never be ashamed to acknowledge you and will tell others of my decision to accept you. In your name I pray, amen."
If you prayed this prayer Bill then you will be saved. At your first opportunity seek believer's baptism in order to receive the Holy Spirit.
Please give thought to my letter Bill, we hate to lose you.
    Sincerely, Guy

It's just in the Star Trek universe that some folks had problems with him (but not until the movies). Leonard Nimoy's son said that Shatner and his dad were like brothers. Writers, crew members and bit actors on Star Trek tos have come forward to say how hardworking and fun he was on set and he did kind things for them. This nastiness about him has become an industry of ugliness. He has an ego that sometimes gets in the way of his better angels, yes. It could stem from deep insecurities. But, more so, he is very up front and to the point person and that is uncomfortable for some. I used to work for him and he usually said what he meant, but he also showed a warm and caring side. And, he is magnanimous human being with a mission to raise awareness about caring for the Earth and each other, through his environmental and charity work. And, from his past statements, I believe Mr. Shatner is more of a Progressive than any sort of supporter of Trump - he tries to bridge the gap and find the humanity in everyone.
