This felt like a therapy session with Emperor Palpatine. Trying to analyze Vader’s feelings towards Obi Wan “You seem agitated” “I wonder if your thoughts are clear” “Perhaps your feelings for your old master have left you weakened” “If your past cannot be overcome.”
This is Vader's true weakness (feeling) and Palpatine knew it from this scene & from the start, ironically he missed it in eps 6, and that's what killed him.
Palpatine missed it because he heard Vader comment on how they would turn Leia if Luke wouldn't fall to the dark side. Palpatine thought, wrongly, that Vader's new plan was to turn Leia to the dark side, and that disposing of Luke was okay because they had Leia. Vader, however, didn't intend to lose either of his kids. I think the only reason Palpatine entertained the idea of turning Luke at all was because he understood Vader's unbreakable connection to Anakin Skywalker. I like to think Palpatine was wise enough to know that Anakin wasn't completely dead, yet, during their discussions in ESB and that he couldn't trust Vader to outright kill him.
@@WestAirAviation Palpatine wanted Luke to join him because he had the same potential Anakin had and was already as powerful as Vader. The duel in ROTJ is basically the same situation Dooku/Anakin had in ROTS. A young Skywalker, who had been previously defeated and mutilated, returns and defeats the sith apprentice, only that Luke refuses to kill, while Anakin did.
@@juanlaise1059 That was a part of it too. Like many (all?) of Palpatines plans, he had multiple contingencies running concurrently. Having Luke replace Vader was certainly Plan A. Leia was Plan B, but no matter what happened, Papa Sheev outright killing both, or telling Vader to kill both, was never gonna fly unless Anakin was truly dead - which I like to think Palpatine knew was not yet the case.
Well he’s the only person that’s played him in Live action, so that’s to be expected lol I’m sure another actor out there could give a great performance/ different take on the character
This helps line up with his first appearance in Rebels more. In The Siege of Lothal when Vader says hunting Ahsoka could help them find Kenobi, Palpatine sounds dismissive. If you listen to Ian’s read of the line from the digital release, he sounds genuinely irritated. With this scene confirming Palpatine has lectured Vader about his vendetta more than once, it comes across as Palpatine getting pissed that Vader is still at it.
This is a quite subtle and complex scene. Vader saying “he will not evade me again” implies he did not tell the Emperor of his defeat by Kenobi (i.e. there was no evasion). In turn the Emperor was disturbed by the effect Kenobi had on Vader, not out of compassion for him but rather out of alarm that If Vader continues this obsessive quest it could loosen the Emperor’s hold on him, because some tiny dormant seed of Anakin may remain and awaken. Vader suddenly and immediately recognized the not-so-subtle threat in the Emperor’s words and like flipping a switch he abandoned his quest and reaffirmed absolute fealty for his Master. This of course explains why in the ensuing years he never engaged with Kenobi until Kenobi came to him, on the Death Star.
I love this line here 1:01 That’s why Vader lost. He was far too obsessed. He let a group of Jedi sympathisers go for Obi-Wan and he has a need for victory. And obi-wan said about his need to prove himself, “Until you overcome it, a padawan, you will still be” he meant it. And it was true. This gives new context to the “I was but the learner now I am the master.” Also 1:31 they held off using the imperial march and saved it. They had one chance to use it appropriately and they absolutely did. Perfect timing. It hit me like a brick.
His theme in the series fit his personal vendetta more. The imperial march fits when he's actually serving the Empire. Now let's see Paul Allen's theme
We’ve never seen Vader speak this aggressively in front of the emperor. He’s normally way more respectful and deferential This definitely was a younger and more reckless version of Vader
But see how quickly Vader backed down from his aggressive posture as the Emperor subtly threatened him. Even in his young and reckless state, he knew better than to provoke Palpatine's displeasure.
Sidious shutting down Vader for wanting to destroy everything in his path searching for Obi-Wan is even more meaningful if you read the comics. In one scene; Sidious stops Vader from force choking a subordinate to death and essentially tells him to stop being so kill-crazy otherwise there won't be anything left to exercise power over. Darth Sidious: "I do not wish to rule over a galaxy of the dead."
I love how in both this and the comics, Palpatine's role half the time is being the Sith equivalent of an angry Police Chief to Vader's Loose Cannon Detective. It's a dynamic I didn't really know I wanted.
I absolutely love that Palpatine was the one to tell Vader to stop looking for Kenobi. Palpatine knew that Obi-Wan beat Vader twice and knew that Vader’s emotions clouds his judgement. Even in 45 seconds, Palpatine is the most intelligent character in the saga.
After his fight, we see how Vader still wants his old Master and when Palpatine is on here. Vader keeps Kenobi out of his thoughts completely. And l9ok at Palpatine with that smile!!!
@dflowers30 when did he say that? and Im still thinking that Vader he’s not is slave, just a broken apprentice I don’t think that you talk about “slaves” when it comes to other apprentice like darth tryannus or darth maul
@@bryanmack7463 Indeed, but his voice felt off, especially when he said, "As I once fell, so falls the last Skywalker", as if he ought to have really cleared his throat.
I don't think so. He didn't tell the Emperor that Kenobi kicked his ass. "He will not evade me again" means he created an illusion that there was no confrontation at all and prey just escaped from predator. IMO it can be boiled down to "Get over your meaningless obsession 'cause it makes you distracted and weak or I'll replace you with someone more reliable".
Love the subtle head movement Vader makes, like he just realized the situation and stopped himself from rambling on. Definitely the beginning of him being the more disciplined character we see in the years leading up to the OT.
To paraphrase Shakespeare, this Lord doth protest too much. Anakin's relationships meant the world to him, so this ongoing love for/attachment to Obi-Wan makes perfect sense and indicates that a part of Anakin is still alive within the depths of Vader.
Vader has always been the most emotional person in all of Star Wars. He let Ahsoka live because he loved her as a daughter. He let Luke live because he was his son. He let SABE live because she looked like Padme. AND NOW, he lets Kenobi live because he's HIS BROTHER, ANAKIN!!!!
That’s also why he lost. Palpatine said your feelings for your old master has weakened you. It makes no sense how Vader would lose after training all this time and this show perfectly showed that he still deep down is anakin
@@stevom1850 I felt like you could see bits of Anakin come to the surface after he has his mask shattered for a while, especially the "I am not your failure" line before Vader fully takes control again when he says "I did"

This is Obiwan Kenobi Episode 6, It's great to see Ian reprising his role as Palpatine. This scene was a perfect reflection of the Emperor's throne room from the 2nd Death Star in Episode 6 ROTJ.
One of the brilliant understated things about Ian McDiarmid's portrayal of palpatine is the way he positions his hands. It's almost like he's ready to pounce and strangle you with them. It's very subtly threatening.
@@andyanderson3776 Palpatine's fecund mind would ensure that it never gets to a duel, (probably unless he knows he can ragdoll his opponents the way he did to Maul).

Also appreciated how his voice changed and he also subtly threatened to replace Vader if he can’t stop obsessing over Obi Wan. Also my favorite look of his since ROTJ, he doesn’t look so overly evil and like demonic in ROTS/TROS and more the aged creepy wizard he was then in 1983.
I had no idea that Ian McDiarmid was in this show. I was nerdgasming at this scene. He looked just like he did in Return Of The Jedi. It was great seeing Qui Gon too, but I expected it due to leaks and the whole season was hinting at it. Palpy was a total surprise!
Hands down this was no doubt the best Star Wars Disney + series yet. It’s so chilling how the Imperial March plays just right after Vader speaks with Palpatine.
Wtf no, just no. There were some lazy writing in some episodes like Obi-Wan knowing Anakin is alive in 10 years, 10 fudging years like he should've known this then in months or even a year after Episode 3 like what Legends did when Obi-Wan in the cantina noticed that some of the civilians spoke something about Darth Vader and was surprised, then panicked but he asked the guy if he could tell more about him when the guy said to him that he slaughtered wookies on Kasshyk including fighting Jedi there which should've been what would happen in this series. Episode 4 (including 3) in this show has cringe writing. Some of the episodes have utter but cringe lazy writing. *Best scene* but not *best show* if you understand how Star Wars lore and how the franchise works.
They did a great job with his makeup. I feel as though he was “swelled” in ROTS because it was a fresh wound. Now he’s settled into his ghostly Return of the Jedi look.
Like imagine if we only got a portion, but it was like 10 minutes of his ranting and raving to Palpatine about Kenobi, just going off about it and Palps is like "What...? You called me for this?" He looks so disturbed by the way Vader went off the rails lol.
Such a dope ending for the Season Finale, I'm very glad that we got to see these two speak in the show along with the Imperial March. Without a doubt, the best episode of the season, I really hope that we get a 2nd one!
The darker and more sinister voice he used to say "Are clear on this, Lord Vader.." and Vader literally backed-down and reiterated that he is only loyal to him, shows the Emperor's absolute authority. Vader might seem to be this sinister force in the galaxy, but even him would not dare to challenge Darth Sidious. Then that subtle smirk he had in the end!!! AHH *chef's kiss* Sir Ian truly is the embodiment of the Emperor, so thankful that he is still playing this character, marvelously.
I love how here the Emperor is still technically playing politics by showing that he has to still appear as Palpaltine more to the Senate since in New Hope we learned that there the Senate is dismantled and eradicated to place complete authority on the Emperor. As he speaks with Vader he presents himself as scarred Palpaltine, but then he switches subtlety to Darth Sidious to remind Vader of his allegiance.
Deborah Chow is an absolute genius for saving the Imperial March until this scene; this series may have been about Obi-Wan overcoming his grief and trauma, but it was also about Vader letting go of his obsession with Anakin’s baggage. The “Kenobi means nothing” line is Vader, albeit reluctantly, finally letting go of his obsession with Obi-Wan, he no longer matters, and in letting that obsession go he’s just become the Vader everyone knows from the original trilogy - less outwardly aggressive and letting his emotions get the better of him, more coldly calculating, patient and honestly even more laidback. It only makes sense that the Imperial March would finally signal this change.
Whoever did the makeup on the emperor did an amazing job! He looks really close to how he looked in return of the jedi even the contact lenses that Ian's wearing looks pretty much identical to how the emperors eyes looked in jedi!
Love the fact that Palpatine was right. Everytime Vader meets someone from his past (Obi-Wan, Ahsoka, and eventually Luke), he becomes emotionally compromised, which led to the Empire's downfall
@@Peer165 Funny, it's actually far superior to the quality of the OT, and I grew up with those in the 80s. You're the type that cannot be satisfied with anything.
"Look, Vader, my boy, my guy, my man, I know I'm all about that giving into you anger kinda thing, but... it's kinda cringe seeing you so mad like that. Why don't you chill a bit?"
Well now we know why Vader became so obsessed with Luke. If Obi Wan could defeat him so easily, then he’d truly lost any chance to defeat Palpatine by himself. His loss on Mustafar costed Vader all the power he once craved and everything he once loved (or so he thought). Of course from the comics we learn that once Vader learned of Luke, he dreamed of taking over the Empire once again, still lost in the darkness that made him who he was. If not for Luke’s love for his evil dad, Anakin would never once reappear. I also loved how Vader with the broken mask showed his deformed burnt face to Kenobi. It was a tragic goodbye for the two former brothers. If anything Vader showed a tad bit of light I believe, when he absolved Obi Wan of any guilt he had for his fall to the Dark Side. And that it was Vader who “killed” Anakin, not Kenobi. That was really touching I thought, before Vader’s renewed hatred again sprang up like it always had. Now we know why Kenobi only referred to Anakin as Darth in ANH, a bit of acceptance that his old Apprentice was gone seemingly forever.
Remember this around 10 years before said fight, Vader became way more powerful since then. His obsession with Luke was more so as a result of the fact that that was his son more than anything else. If Vader had overcome his conflict and killed Luke in episode 6, he would’ve been drawn so deep into the dark side that it absolutely is a possibility he would’ve destroyed Palpatine. His issue was always his conflict between light and dark.
@@aaronmiles2802 Palpatine was always stronger than him. Luke also matched his father in ROTJ. Jedi vs Sith guide(2016) aswell as the canon comic retelling ROTJ confirm that "Father and Son were now equally powerful in the Force and equally skilled with their lightsabers". Both warriors didn't want to kill the other. Vader wanted to turn Luke and Luke wanted to save his father.
Yeah that's what I think, Vader *did* get really close to Palpatine's level right after ROTS (he could ragdoll him with the force) but then Sidious always was a step futher than him afterwards. Many people think that prime Vader > prime Palpatine because of how narrow the gap was in ROTS while completely ignoring that Palpatine could've just grown in power. @@exaggeratedswaggerofablackteen Prime Vader was never superior to Prime Palpatine. He could have become this but he didn't. Though every time they did clash, Vader did MUCH better than pretty much anyone else.
Palpatine didn't finish the sentence when he said "If your past cannot be overcome..." because the rest of it was a threat. A chilling scene, Ian is always brilliant.
I love how Palpatine is seeing into Vader and hints to him what Vader fears: Is his obsession with Kenobi worth throwing away his future as a Sith apprentice? Just like his grandson: “He means nothing to me.” Sidious was always anxious to replace Vader.
Great to see Palpatines manipulations at work. He notices that him being confronted with his past had him unbalanced, the conflict in him aflame. He sees Vaders connection to Obi Wan is a threat and isolates him again, just like he did it in the PT. He has to be the only thing Vader has left, so he can keep him trapped in his dark emotions and tied to himself as the only place to go.
I absolutely loved that they only used the Imperial March once, right at the end as an authoritative Vader looms over his world. Anakin Skywalker is fully dead in that moment until Luke comes along.
I think the theme he had over the course of the series fit for his character arc since he was still bound by his past and hatred for Obi Wan. With him saying “Kenobi means nothing” he’s finally putting that part of his past behind him finally becoming the Vader of the OT which was why we finally heard the Imperial March

@@WestAirAviation
Palpatine wanted Luke to join him because he had the same potential Anakin had and was already as powerful as Vader.
But isn't sith stronger the more they feel anger? And all Vader felt for Kenobi was anger, or am I missing something?

This helps line up with his first appearance in Rebels more. In The Siege of Lothal when Vader says hunting Ahsoka could help them find Kenobi, Palpatine sounds dismissive. If you listen to Ian’s read of the line from the digital release, he sounds genuinely irritated. With this scene confirming Palpatine has lectured Vader about his vendetta more than once, it comes across as Palpatine getting pissed that Vader is still at it.
But isn't it weird that Vader said that he is over Kenobi here, but he still wants to find him in Rebels?

I love how he’s introduced just staring at Vader. No big reveal, no dramatic entrance. It’s like he just woke up to Vader bitching about Kenobi.
I love this line here 1:01
That’s why Vader lost. He was far too obsessed. He let a group of Jedi sympathisers go for Obi-Wan and he has a need for victory. And obi-wan said about his need to prove himself, “Until you overcome it, a padawan, you will still be” he meant it. And it was true.
This gives new context to the “I was but the learner now I am the master.”

But doesn't sith get fueled and more powerful by their hatred? All Vader felt for Kenobi was hate, or am I missing something?
We’ve never seen Vader speak this aggressively in front of the emperor. He’s normally way more respectful and deferential
This definitely was a younger and more reckless version of Vader
And hes not even bowing either

“You wish to be a Moff, Lord Vader?”
“No, why would I…?”
“Then stop killing my Moffs!”

The way Palpatine just stares. Like, "This kid has lost the plot."
It’s so bizarre for Palpatine to come off as sincere and slightly intimidating at the same time
Palpatine knew that, even though Vader would flatly deny outright, Anakin still loved Obi Wan

Palpatine was freaking gentle here for Vader. I was a bit shocked that he didn’t say something like „You will be punished for your obsession”
Vader: Rants
Palatine: You mad bro?
You forget that Palpatine became more powerful too in those 10 years

Luke also matched his father in ROTJ.

0:52 the subtle change from his fatherly chancellor voice to Sidious' is perfect
I absolutely loved that they only used the Imperial March once, right at the end as an authoritative Vader looms over his world. Anakin Skywalker is fully dead in that moment until Luke comes along.
The new version of Vaders theme sounded so cool. Imagine if it was used a little more throughout the show.
I think the theme he had over the course of the series fit for his character arc since he was still bound by his past and hatred for Obi Wan.
