Megaman 2 is one of those that’s become damned by its own praise, because it doesn’t seem like it could possibly be that good, but it lives up to everything put on its shoulders.
I grew up on MMX and MM as a kid and I just love the movement and rpg elements in the X games. The original MM games always felt too stiff so I never played them much. I will agree that the later X games are real rotten though
I knew this was going to go over well! Super Mario Bros. 3 was out the same year and these games had such artistic maturity compared to their predecessors, it would be several years before a breakthrough like that again.
I know its just so over said, but damn that Mega Man 2 soundtrack is just the best. As for the robot master designs, 1 did have cool designs, but you cant tell me Heat Man being a Zippo lighter isnt cool as hell. Wood Man being a tree trunk pretty neat too, and weird. A wooden robot, crazy! Just a game that lots of people love, and for good reason. Keep rockin Jeff, this series is just the best. Science Rules.
Where does the quote "I can't move" come from? I've heard you say it sometimes and it just makes me think of Lion-O saying it in an episode of thundercats my brothers and I have quoted for like 30 years.
Was trying to think of an analogy and arrived at Jeff's X trashing maybe feels like an original Star Trek fan trashing TNG based on commercials before it aired Also MM2 is Big Black, MMX is Shellac (RIP Albini) Or maybe Minor Threat / Fugazi ?
When Jeff would begin an insane quest to categorize all games in the past, there was a lot of comedy in watching a mortal crash against the impossibility of the task. Now that he's in cyberspace, with the lack of friction to slow him down.. he may actually do it. God save us all.
34:53 They have a Mega Man energy drink. It's made by G-Fuel and comes in two styles carbonated Can and dry Powder. I like it and it does taste blue. Should have one for whenever Mega Man 3 (4 or 5 or 6) is reviewed here!
I would assume this Tengen label Temple of Doom game is based on the Atari-made arcade game. I'm kind of surprised Jeff isn't familiar with that, and seemed lost.
Very curious to see how future MegaMan titles will place after this because all things considered, while MM2 is the most casual of the series, and I mean that it is the most palatable for new comers, it is not the best MegaMan game. It actually has quite a lot of flaws when stacked up against its successors. For me, 3 is the best on the NES, followed closely by 4. However, I do not expect 4 to come close to the top of the list. 3 on the other hand, derserves a spot near, or at the top, that is a near flawless title. Anyways, glad to see the Blue Bomber place so high, I loves me some Megaman
Honestly when I replayed them all a few years ago, 2 and 6 were the standouts on NES to me. 3 and 4 had that "this is getting old" feeling slip in for me, 5 is just rough all around, but 6 felt more polished and added stuff like multiple routes and the Rush suits to spice things up again.
Honestly, when Mega Man 1 ranked as highly as it did, I had good feeling Mega Man 2 could go the distance since it's a massive improvement in every way. That's not to say Mega Man 1 is bad, it's just that 2 does it all better. Technically it does fall off with some rough level design in the fortress stages so it helped it to quit where Jeff did, but obviously nobody has the time to literally beat every game on the list to rank them.
It's one of the few games I consider to be as perfect as a video game can be. I've been playing it regularly since 1988 and it's a joy every time. There was a time in my 20s I could consistently beat this game in 36:30. And that soundtrack. Better than most grammy winning artists.
There are a handful of games on the NES that when you played them when they came out, you could tell that video games had just gotten way better, Mega Man 2 is one of those games.
I'm really hoping The Science pulls through for Mega Man 3 when its time comes. The only thing 3 doesn't do better than 2, and even this point is arguable, is the music. It has more stages, you get to fight all the Mega Man 2 bosses again, AND the slide mechanic adds a movement option that makes maneuverability breezier. Plus Mega Man 3 doesn't have a Metal Blade-esque weapon that marginalizes enemies for the rest of the game and it doesn't have any whack-ass bosses like the Boobeam Trap, which you can automatically fail for not having enough ammo for a certain weapon. But even if that wasn't enough, 3 also introduces Proto Man. I contend it's a universal truth that introducing an antagonistic rival with a mysterious connection to your main character is cool as hell.
I had no idea that there was more than one version of NES Barbie until now. The one Jeff played had some annoyingly grating tracks! I remember a much more cozy theme song for levels 1 and 2. Apparently they brought people in to add more music in revisions.
ahh finally robodemons. I rented that one as a child and... was baffled. Went back later with an emulator and recorded myself beating it but I guess I deleted the video for some reason. It's not actually that hard of a game TBH you just gotta abuse the rapid fire when you directly hit an enemy, its mostly about knowing the good routes thru the stages (when you get to ones that arent completely linear). Final boss is predictably satan or some version of him
