    A lot of times while studying Korean I start thinking that English is easy, but then I remember that there are still native speakers who don’t know the difference between your, you’re, their, there, they're, too, and to.

    11. Find your true purpose for learning Korean. Keep asking yourself why you want to study until you get a solid reason. When you don't feel like studying, you'll remember your reason, and you'll hopefully carry on. This is my number 1 tip.

      Seoul Ting YES. No more "to read BTS vids" or "to understand my oppas" or "to watch kdrama". Sure it's a decent basis reason, but you can't sustain on that. I know people can learn for the reason they want, but I don't like seeing all these people act determined and give up within a month because their motivation was weak.

    I've seen lots of people saying "Korean is really easy." They are totally misguiding. But you are not!
    You are giving the right tricks and tips. If I want to add one more tip ...
    Trick 11. Be patient... You cannot learn Korean in one year or two... it will take you much more time, patience, and efforts. But it will be rewarding!

    • @GoBillyKorean
      @GoBillyKorean  8 лет назад +9

      +Kim Thomas That's another good tip. I think if someone studies Korean every day for several hours really hard (such as while living in Korea), they could become conversational in 1 year, but definitely not fluent.

      @GoBillyKorean  8 лет назад +7

      What websites say that?

    • @HomoSiliconiens
      @HomoSiliconiens 8 лет назад +13

      I do not know GO! Billy in person, but I believe he is guiding Korean learning method the right way. If your mother tongue is one of the Indo-European languages, learning 1-2 hours a day is not effective at all. Instead 5 ~ 8 hour-long a day for 6 to 12 months is much more efficient and effective than two-hour long a day 10 to 20 years.
      Most human beings, if not very dull or bad memory, he/she can catch and understand the grammar of a totally different language from his/her mother tongue, with in-depth full-time 6 to 12 months of study. Once he/she got the grammar, they can improve their foreign language very fast and efficiently. Without understanding the grammar, it's totally out of sense, or it would take way too long.
      Some Korean American says on the RUclips that the Korean language is really simple and easy, such that most people can learn it within a couple of hours or days.
      I understand he is trying to encourage people to learn the Korean language, but it is totally stupid idea if he is trying to encourage people this wrong way.
      I am native Korean and my kids are born, raised, and educated in Korea for last 18 years, even that they have been taking 3 ~ 4 Korean classes a week from their elementary to high schools, even that Korean is a still difficult language for them.
      Korean is not a simple primitive language, it is as advanced as any other full-blown human languages, and it's been used for tens of thousands years by Koreans. How he can say that it can be learned just by watching RUclips videos and singing along KPOP or just by watching K-dramas.
      I've never met GO Billy, but I can tell you he, GO Billy, must have spent unimaginably many hours and has been pouring all his efforts and energies to learn Korean language, and I believe he is still actively learning Korean, even though he already speaks pretty well.
      =============
      Whenever I see some foreigners who speak Korean every well, I can see how much efforts, time and energy they have been spending just to lean a foreign language. I admire them. I know a few of them actually have talent in language learning, but majority of them learned his or her foreign language through countless days, so many sleepless nights, reading, thinking, trying to understand, practicing, speaking even to him or herself, murmuring and/or mumbling his/her new phrases to him/herself on his/her way to school or work. Even dream many nights in Korean.
      Those who did not learn a foreign language are apt to believe (or make believe) that they have the talent, but which they themselves not.
      I watched a few youtube videos who really speak Korean well. He said he watched the same Korean movie over 20 times to learn colloquial Korean expressions, which they can hardly learn from books.
      Those who are speaking Korean well or those who command foreign languages, not because they have a talent in it, but because they paid the due price for it.
      I believe GO Billy paid his price and won what he wanted, and wants to share his experience with others, but some cannot see the right way even if the experienced try to show it to them, instead they choose the easy or seemingly rosy one that never lead to the right path or trail.

    • @HomoSiliconiens
      @HomoSiliconiens 8 лет назад +9

      Learning or improving vocabulary is life long process..., so is grammar, but if you have grammar, learning becomes much more efficient and effective, and a lot fun.
      You cannot speak Korean at all even if you already have Korean grammar. Then why grammar is so important? Grammar is not all, but it is just a part of this learning process.
      Even if you have memorized 10,000 Korean words, they are still useless unless you do have grammar.
      Grammar is like gun, vocabulary like ammo.

    • @HomoSiliconiens
      @HomoSiliconiens 8 лет назад +6

      I am not saying grammar is all that is required to learn a foreign language. It is definitely not all, but a vital part of language learning process. Don't try to understand it all just within a few days or weeks... Grammar should be practiced through reading, writing, and speaking, again and again until you can speak correct Korean without thinking much of its presence, unconsciously. You may not think about English grammar when you read or speak in English. That's like you lived in the air too long such that you forgot its presence at all, but once you dive into water, you will badly miss it.
      So is grammar to foreign language learning process. It's a life long process.

    For everyone that says they have no Korean friends in the surrounding area there is an app called hello talk where you can chat and ask native Koreans questions amd get your sentences and mistakes corrected. And in exchange you teach and correct the language they want to learn such as English. Also it's free but I'm not sure if iphones would have it in their app store I know android carries it.

    I've been learning korean naturally through the dramas for a while and have just recently started studying it seriously. I agree with all of these but I think you should add the tip of immersion. whether it's watching dramas, listening to korean music or actually living in Korea, being able to hear korean spoken aloud on a daily basis is extremely helpful with figuring out pronunciation as well as picking up new vocabulary.

      Remember everyone, a koreaboo is someone who completely disowns their ethnicity/nationality/race in order to “become” Korean. It’s not a learner of the Korean language or Korean culture. If a Korean person wanted to meet, let’s say, Beyoncé, they wouldn’t be considered a “westernaboo” just for wanting to know a little bit of English in order to communicate better with her.

    I think that learning Hanja considerably boosts up your korean and especially your vocabulary, even though a lot of people interested in east asian culture and languages choose korean instead of japanese or chinese only because of their "lack" of chinese characters, those chinese characters actually make the language considerably easier to learn, I know about 200-300 Hanja's along with their meaning and pronunciation, and now most of the time when I read or hear a new korean word I can easily make un educated guess about it's meaning based on context and the Hanja readings.

    Learning hangeul is a must if you want to learn korean, because the romanizations can be confusing. Also, hangeul is a very easy alphabet and it takes a week or 2 to figure out all 24 basic vowels and consonants. To learn the double consonants, the rest of the vowels and batchim, you need a little more time, because the pronouncation can be a bit tricky sometimes.

I always have some sort of Korean practice during the day even if it is trying to memorize a song or small parts of it. Naver translator app and HelloTalk also help a ton. And now that I've discovered this channel, this will be yet another tool.

    Number 9 is so true. Don't compare yourself to others. There will always be someone who can speak better Korean than you. That applies do other things too, like playing instruments or sports. Don't let that discourage you! Just focus on yourself and your own process. Don't disregard your efforts. You're doing great!

  • @hatchimitsuchai

    It's better to build vocabulary before grammar. No one cares about perfect grammar. Hint: They know you are a foreigner and will try their best for you even at the bank! Most of the time any intelligent person will be able to decipher your "cute" grammar. In fact funny grammar makes for awesome ice-breakers and kids are especially good at this intuitive process. I can say "drink" and someone will know I want a drink. Heck I don't even need that. I could just gesture it. I did an experiment with my gf in Japan. We had dinner purely by gestures and had a blast. Hilarious.
    In any language vocab is king. How do I know? I have been living in Asia (mostly Japan and China) for 10 years and speak and read Mandarin, Japanese and Thai very well. I learned to read and speak Mandarin in weeks since I had a huge base of Chinese hanzi vocab thanks to Japanese kanji vocab.
    Korean is new for me but sentence structure is similar to Japanese and the methods to study Hangul are similar to Thai so Korean seems pretty straight forward for me.
    Vocab basically means adjectives and verbs so study those first.

      Rosemarie Yu I've heard from so many people that that shouldn't be a reason to learn the language seriously apparently you grow out of k pop and such and you're left without a reason

    • @GoBillyKorean
      @GoBillyKorean  8 лет назад +8

      I don't think it matters so much *why* someone learns a language, as long as they have *a* reason to learn it. Someone might start learning a language for a small reason, and develop new reasons to keep learning it later on.
      For example, I started learning Japanese originally as a joke with a friend, just so we could talk to each other during class, and ended up studying for about 3 years and visiting Japan several times. I no longer contact that friend, but I have dozens of Japanese friends who I still contact on a regular basis, and I would've never even started without that reason.
      Some people might learn Korean just to talk with a boyfriend or girlfriend, and then quit when they break up. Others might start for the same reason, but make friends and keep going, or discover other reasons to keep going.
      The important thing in my opinion isn't why you start, but how you keep going. If you've lost your reason, then perhaps take a look around and see if there isn't another one already next to you.

    I study korean for a minium of 2-3 hours a day just when I wake up because I love it. I use a text book called 'Elementary Korean' and I look up for some videos on RUclips. So yes, in the book the subject and topic particles were kinda confusing so I watched your video about that lesson and I understood now how they work. I'm a beginner though, I started learning this beautiful language a week ago and I find it more fascinating everyday!

      Learn Korean with GO! Billy Korean I thought that one must have a big reason to study a language that is only spoken in one country ~
      And I have gone through some courses here in youtube like ttmik, seemile, but mostly HuyngSeok Song's chanel and website(amazing btw)+ pdf grammar guides etc. Practicing is writing random useless stuff everyday, though when I try to say or even write what I actually want, all the info in my head explodes and all i can say in the end is "meow"... :(

    • @GoBillyKorean
      @GoBillyKorean  7 лет назад

      I think your practice might need a bit of tuning. Practicing should be using the language in real situations as much as possible - or using it in controlled situations together with a tutor/penpal. Instead of writing "random useless stuff," I think it'd be better if you could find several pen pals to practice with. Without meeting you personally or hearing you talk or seeing your writing, I can't judge your level, but it's possible that you know a lot of Korean but are only able to use a little bit of it. This is due to the way that you are practicing. I think if you can do that, and keep it up for several months, talking with penpals every day in Korean while you go about your day, you'll notice a substantial improvement.
