    They should make a show called Slayer. Each season or two depicts a different slayer. A slayer from 1920's Chicago. A slayer from 1890's London. A slayer from 1977 New York. One of the best parts of Buffy were the amazing death scenes. Now you get to kill off a slayer every year or two.

  • @Dudeamis17

    I would do a revival, with the backstory being that the slayers have been greatly diminished in numbers, and that the spell that created all the slayers, reduced the number of potentials so that each generation is slowly reducing the number of slayers to the point that either the slayer will be gone or it will return to the one slayer in every generation. Currently there's only a few slayers left on Earth, let's say 7, including Buffy. But the show isn't about her, it's about a young teenage slayer living in a town with a newly discovered Hellmouth. We can bring in someone like Michelle Tratchenburg as her watcher to link the series

    I mean, I think show creators today are just writing characters that aren't all that likeable, but they feel justified because a lot of younger audiences have grown up watching reality TV, which lives by the mantra drama over dignity. Euphoria and Succession are prime examples. And while I enjoy Succession, I watch it waiting for character redemption arcs to come around.... and most of the time I'm left waiting.

    I believe a *very underestimated* problem a new"Buffy"in _any_ form would have is _time._ Not(only)in the sense of time _period_ the show has to be settled in,but the time you use _to watch it._ A big reason why"Buffy"is so complex and memorable is that we get the _time_ to explore every character very deeply. And why we are able to do that?Because each season(apart from the 1st)has *22 episodes!* Modern shows I've been watching,like"The Wilds"or"Wednesday"barely have 10...they're *shorter* than Buffy's shortest(and most underrated)season!!HOW can you expect to have the same complexity and depth with such little time?!?And also...in the '90s/early 2000s we took _the time_ to _wait_ and _process_ things between 1 episode and the next.AND WE DIDN'T GET ANY SPOILERS IN THE MEANTIME!!!Nowadays everyone wants to binge everything and if you,say,need to wait for the show to be dubbed in your language or you wanna watch 1 ep each week like in the good old '90s *you will get surrounded by spoilers in no time!!!* 😵 And I know this for sure because it's happening to me with"Wednesday"!! I have watched 1 ep each Wednesday since it came out which means I'm at ep 6 and yet I already know at least(counts)10 things I'm not supposed to know yet...maybe I even forgot some(I wrote 6 and then I kept changing the number because I remembered more and more things). Imagine a world in which you get Joyce's death or the S5 finale or Dawn's identity or Tara's death being spoiled to you!How HORRIFIC would that be?!?X-((( *Leave"Buffy"alone in the wonderful '90s where she belongs,please!!!* 🙏

      @Nicamon 2 года назад

      @@Heather_in_Kansas I thought there might have been that risk,but I assumed whoever watches a video about"Buffy"already knows the show otherwise..the video itself technically would spoil a lot of things. Fun fact...I also watched"Buffy"when it aired,but...probably starting by ep 3x04 so _I myself_ got a lot of things"spoiled",like what Angel and Oz were,for example,and when I went back to watch S1 I had *no idea* Willow had been in love with Xander her whole life and that Oz wasn't even a part of the"core"gang...such a shock it was!!😱

    As much as I love Buffy I think the only addition to the franchise I’d accept would be a prequel series that follows Spike & Dru. Mostly cus I’ve recently gotten into the 60s/70s era and I loved the little mentions by Spike in btvs. I would definitely love to see Spike getting high off hippie blood 😂 I would also love to see more of Robin’s mom she had a really cool look. I mean a slayer in a leather trench coat what’s not to love?
    Plus since Buffy doesn’t become the slayer until the late 90s that gives us 20 years between Nikki’s death and Spike’s arrival at Sunnyvale for more stories.
    My main issue with a new series featuring a Buffy successor is the thought of not having Buffy.

  • @BrennaUrbangirl
    @BrennaUrbangirl 2 года назад +8

    You said Buffy is the 90s. And your right. I've read some of the Buffy comics that Boom Studios put out. It was set more contemporary (in the 2010s) While the stories were okay, there was one glaring thing that I immediately had a problem with. It was Willow's clothes. In BTVS Willow was very reserved when it came to her clothing choices, and this was even mentioned in the season 2 episode Halloween where Willow says, "I don't get wild. Wild on me equals 'spaz.'" Yet in the Boom Studios comic they have Willow showing more skin than she did in the series. When I saw the first panel of Willow in the comic she was wearing a miniskirt and fishnet stockings and I was like really, Willow would never have worn a miniskirt and fishnet stockings.
    I'm all for a continuation set twenty years after the end of BTVS. But an out and out reboot would need some major retooling to take it out of that 90s setting. I'm not saying it couldn't be good but it definitely won't be as good as BTVS is.

    As far as Willow goes, Joss has said that he wanted Willow to be bi in the original series, but the network would barely let him make her gay, and definitely would not let him make her bi. If a new series was doing justice to her character at all, it would remedy the bi-erasure.

      @oneslikeme 2 года назад +6

      @@jacobrogers2906 Dude fucking stop. I do think she was bi, don't read into my statement something I didn't say. Joss Whedon says she was not and Willow herself says she's gay and frequently denied being attracted to men anymore, going as far as attempting to cast a spell to turn a boy into a girl. When I had discussions in forums at the beginning of the decade about Willow being bi, I was met with vehement arguments stating she was gay and how dare we try to take away from the progressiveness of the show by diluting her gayness with bi-ness, essentially bi-erasure.
      Of course I don't need a steamy scene, why on earth would I need that. I need Willow to state, "Bi now!" with the same energy she stated, "Gay now!"

    Any production company wanting to reboot Buffy has clearly never watched Buffy, and will only be doing it for a lame cage grab, and ANY effort in that direction would be a catastrophic disaster of epic proportions.
    The ONLY way something could be done would be to set the show at some point in either the distant future or the distant past, with a completely different slayer who is NOT named “Buffy”.
    I would prefer something in the distant future, with some explanation of how the army of slayers was wiped out, some kind of unforeseen side effect of the magic, or a governmental conspiracy, a slayer plague, a mass demon invasion that manages to slaughter them all, who knows?
    But a distant past storyline could also be fun, changing slayers and time frames from season to season, a la American Horror Story.
    Unfortunately, no one in hollywood has the talent or the soul to craft something anywhere near the quality of writing, or acting, that Buffy and Angel had.
    Sooo, no. I agree that there should never be any attempt at a Buffy remake/reboot/revival. At least not in my lifetime, please.

    Honestly Hollywood wouldn't know a good script if it bit them in the ass these days, let alone able to find a capable director and writing team and letting them have full autonomy in the creation process it would turn into a cheap imitation of what made the show great. And while it has fantastic messaging and progressive themes throughout it was first and foremost a character driven series, you could watch the entire cast sit on a bench waiting for a bus and it would still be some of the best TV to air.
    So I'm happy you highlighted that as one of your first points!
    Josh Weedon absolutely knows how to write, he would frequently do re-writes and edits of scripts for episodes to polish them up (how he started in the industry in fact). The problem though is he loves to slide in or undercut dramatic moments with a joke, and they thankfully they usually land in Buffy. However it's been copied so often by franchisees from Marvel that I think its going to just be a cliche if they go that route with the humor.
    Personally give me a series in the same universe but with new characters, as much as I loved the original cast I don't think a reboot of the series will do anything but constrain and limit the writers. It should take place after the events of Buffy/Angel which lore wise it also makes a lot of sense after the events in Buffy's last season as the line of slayers has been massively expanded.
    This also helps prevent people from comparing the characters/episodes/series directly to Buffy and lets it stand on its own merits.
    That said for those wanting for an awesome review of the Angel/Buffy series in a psudo book club format I'd check out the Passion of the Nerd's channel its a brilliant series.

      Even if everything had gone her way in the last 2 seasons, I doubt she would have wanted to stay longer. No actor/actress wants to be associated with only one role throughout their entire career. She made a good choice.

    For the whole Buffy and Angel relationship thing, they could make it so that Angel wasn't in his twenties when he was turned. I heard that that was what Boom was going for in their first Buffy comic reboot, before it got canceled. Granted, that doesn't fix everything, of course, but it's still better than what the show did, tbh. Like, if Angel was turned when he was a teenager or something, somewhere around Buffy's age, at least he isn't really physically older than she is (or mentally, older if you buy into that vampire lore that a lot of vampire media tries to spout: that a vampire is frozen as the age they were turned, like even mentally and maturity level-wise), even if he's lived two-hundred fifty years or whatever.
    Though I still don't think they should reboot Buffy, as you said and many others have. And I don't think they really would. It WOULD probably be a revival. In fact, I think that was the original plan for the new show (though the showrunner's words were confusing. She seemed to go back and forth on them a lot). But now it seems to be entirely off the table, with the Joss Whedon cancelling and the planned showrunner now working on the Percy Jackson show instead (that I AM elated about, don't get me wrong). :( Oh, well. We can just dream about what a show about a new Slayer would be like, perhaps. And at least there are the books by Kendare Blake coming out. "In Every Generation" was pretty good.
    I'm also looking forward to what you might have to say about AtS, coming up.
    And oh, man! You're the person who made that video about Zack Fair's voice? Amazing! I'm also excited about the Advent Children video that you hinted at, at the end of this video! Keep the cool things coming:)

  • @MattanzaMafiaFedora

    Thanks for doing this, Jayniac!
    There's also the conflation over whether or not this is meant to be a real "reboot" or a sequel series. They seem to be using those terms synonymously... Why? Just why?
    If it were a sequel series, I wouldn't mind it all that much, and I'd actually love to see Zendaya in the franchise. But a reboot is completely unworkable for all the reasons you've listed in this video.
    ALSO: We _need_ a new Buffy game! I'm thinking of something in the same style as Assasin's Creed, the Arkham Games or the recent Spider-Man ones.

    They should make a small onscreen reunion, maybe 1 - 3 episodes with 45 +/-3 minutes runtime each. A kind of an annual family meeting in the middle of nowhere, no internet, no phone. They should ignore the comics for the most time (have the first two season 8 books and besides the cool sidelines in popculture references and 1on1-talks they are not a plausible continuation of the s7-finale). Since Buffys content is still relevant, there is not so much new stuff to add to fill a whole season. For the aging problem of Spike and Angel: Well, we know at least two ways in universe to turn them back into humans, so if this happend years ago, they could save money for deepfaking them (and since Buffy is more like Sarah for a normal life instead one full of adventures, i expect her ending up with Angel and havin' kids).

    I 💯 agree! This show would be a pile crap if rebooted. Yes... The romantic relationships were unhealthy to say the least. But I think that was to illustrate how most of us don't know what we're doing as teenagers and young adults. Just fumbling through life, having to learn from our own mistakes and decisions. However, I do appreciate that Buffy was never less than her serious boyfriends. They always had an equal dynamic. Even in strength and intellect. Angel, Riley and Spike... She may have been physically stronger than Riley. Plus he probably treated her the best.
    I like Angel too... The spin-off. There was some weirdness I thought unnecessary in the later seasons. But overall I enjoyed it.

    I enjoyed the video, and very much agree with you on the Buffy and Angel relationship - a 240 year old falling in love at first sight with a barely 15 year old girl sucking on a lollipop is a little too Lolita for my taste.
    I disagree with you on Drusilla and Spike though - if anything it was Drusilla taking advantage of Spike. I love Drusilla as a character and have so much empathy given what Angel did to her, but Drusilla was the one who sired Spike (which gives her power over him) and she sired him to create a companion, someone to adore her, entertain her, and take care of her when Angel and Darla didn't want to be bothered.
    I do think she cares about Spike as much as she is capable of, but she definitely views him as a possession, and is willing to toss him aside whenever anything else captures her attention, be it The Immortal, a Fungus demon, or especially her "Daddy" - Angel/Angelus.

    • @GreyDeathVaccine
      @GreyDeathVaccine Год назад

      I think you missed why Buffy's recruitment didn't appear until the end of season two. The creators knew they had built an unhealthy relationship. That's why they specifically gave Buffy a lollipop to signal 'Lolita vibes', that they were aware of it.
      Either way, I think these flashbacks in the finale of the second season are very weak, and apparently the creators do too, because in the Angel spin-off there was a total retcon of Angel's story.

  • @KaLionVsTheWorld

    Buffy and Angel’s romance could be rewritten as a platonic relationship evolving into a “will they they/won’t they”pairing in the reboot’s the third season, but then again, it would kill the potential for another Angelus heel turn and that’s something many Buffy fans would ant. The best way to reboot is if they do a 50/50 - keep certain storylines, while mixing them with original ones, so it doesn’t feel like a complete rehash of the show. I don’t see the need for a reboot, I’d very much prefer an animated limited series continuation so we can have Angel and Spike in, without having to deage them into uncanny valley monstrosities, akin to what they did with that weird Jack Lord cameo in the Hawaii 5-0 reboot.
    Also, I can definitely see most of the cast agreeing to an animated feature rather than a live action one, for various reasons.

    Buffy is my all time favorite show. I watch every Buffy reactor on RUclips but there is no way I would watch a Buffy reboot. Maybe a show about previous slayers before Buffy but anything post original Buffyverse characters would ruin perfection. I don't want to see a "woke" version and we can't pick it up years later with the same characters because of the vampires never aging thing. They should've gone with Ripper as they were talking about years ago. Other than that, I vote no on a reboot.

    It wasnt just the 90s. Has some older gothic horror themes too. Power corrupts, magic is a dark art and isn't free / nothing is, sex and relationships are special while treating them otherwise is a sign of a pathology, and much more. But that all started to break down in season six and seven. A reboot would probably pick up there and be a different world. A modern... stupid and lame one that wouldn't appeal to me... And probably not other original fans even if they don't articulate why.

    Inappropriate relationships happen all the time when you fiction. Not just between vampires and humans but also vampires and vampires. Some vampires are thousands of years older than the vampires that they are with. There's no need to change that part.
    In Seinfeld nobody really likes Newman but he sticks around because he's their neighbor and I think landlord at one point. And I think they do like Anya just not all the time.
    Also Drusilla sired Spike. He fell for her while she was a vampire and she turned him just because she was kind of an invalid doesn't mean he took advantage of her.
    Also in the comics and several books they mentioned how the cellular line continues after the show ends.

    Buffy was about it’s time, the culture that is now, and the journey for Buffy to become an independent, strong, emotionally intelligent, and understanding of real love woman. That can never be duplicated. It’s 20 years later and there were hundreds of Slayers awakened. The vile Watchers Council was eliminated , Buffy is 42/43, , new government officials are now in charge…. there’s much for a new story to carry on a modern version but it makes no sense…. None… to start Buffy over.Buffy could be an advisor to Slayers but she was done. Once Dawn was grown , Willow and Giles had found their peace… no more stories.Xander is not a compelling person to be at the center, Angel and Spike more than likely went down fighting, and Sunnydale is a tourist attraction for hikers to visit, like Pompeii.
