@@mikekazz5353 Exactly, what they are doing is cropping off the top and bottom of the image in order to change a square 4:3 image into a 16:9 rectangle image, and then taking that reduced frame and zooming it in to fill the screen. The Wire is a great example of a show that was made in 4:3 and later converted to 1080p 16:9 properly. They worked very closely with the original team to make sure that everything went over properly. I wish more studios actually cared about the properties that they put out into the world.
I've never even watched Buffy and I'm absolutely floored by how utterly bastardized this is. I can't even believe this was released. I've seen anime localizations from the 90s done with more care and understanding of the source material than this.
Treating a masterpiece like a piece of commercial fodder. There should be some kind of copyright law that can strip a copyright holder if they show total disregard for the care of the art work. In the absence of that, please try to create as loud a stink as possible against Fox. Not that they care. But, while I have been craving a HD release, I will not pay for a botched job. The Wire set an artistic precedent on creative control. All Fox have to do is follow it. But they're just jerks in suits.
I'm still hoping they bring Buffy to Blu-Ray, but they had better correct this first. I've watched Buffy ever since it's original air date, and own the original book style DVD's. I couldn't watch it like this, it's ruined. Please fix it Fox/Pivot!
Good god... I thought the Master being visible in that Prophecy Girl scene was going to be the worst error but the entire camera crew being visible on the rooftop in Graduation Day is pretty much unforgivable. It's clear there was no one doing Quality Control on this remaster but now I'm starting to think the team behind it was actively TRYING to fuck up as much as possible.
So... lemmie get this straight-- they went to remaster the Buffy episodes.. and they play around re-doing some of the F/X... but they can't bother to get *basic* stuff right like making sure the crew doesn't appear in wide shots? smdh.
Buffy and Angel are the archetypes for nearly all good geek-related tv shows today. They came first, and did it best (sorry superfans of The Flash), so why in God's name would they even attempt this if they weren't gonna do it right? And Whedon's comments aside, why the hell have these shows not had a blu ray release, with the best ppl in the world on the job?? It's blasphemy.
I wish they'd do with BtVS what was done with Twin Peaks: update to HD, but keep the original format. Twin Peaks' Blu-ray boxset is so good. Buffy deserves just the same.
Philippe Parle Peu There is a key difference between the two though, and that's the fact David Lynch was heavily involved in the remastering process for Twin Peaks.
Good to know. I wish i knew that sooner so I could;ve seen X-Files in 4x6. Although "The Truth Is Out There" was always left out on netflix for some reason until they went HD with X-Files
Don't worry guys! There isn't really a problem with the filters. We can just say Angel is suddenly immune to the sun because he prematurely discovered the Gem of Amara. Totes makes sense. :P Seriously though, this is ridiculous. As a die-hard Buffy-fan I remain loyal to the original (not messed up) version.
Is that what happens in angel? I tried to watch it properly but I was so bored after the first three episodes that me and my buffy binge buddy just skipped straight to the first episode Spike appears in (wich at least for us was a good decision, as it was instantly more entertaining). But theres SO many instances of Angel standing in bright sunlight in his office that I was like: 'Did he stop...being a vampire or something...?'
He got the Gem of Amara in the middle of season 1, but destroyed it shortly after (I'm not sure if that was the same episode or the next one) because he was afraid that he become too human and forget that his duty is to fight demons in the night.
He got the gem in the third ep of season 1. In season 5 he (and the gang) take over Wolfram and Hart (which is essentially the overarching big bad for the entire series) and that building has windows that allow vampires to stand in sunlight without getting burned. The very first episode (of the series) pretty much makes that clear when Angel pushes a vamp through one of the windows. Also, if you haven't watched the first 4 seasons I'd recommend you check it out. It's pretty good, action packed and develops a lot of Angel backstory. I mean I like it anyway. Hope I could help.
This is just the WORST. And Netflix is the worst for streaming this shitty ass version of BtVS- the essence of the show is completely lost in many scenes by the color shifts and cropping. Arm-chair editors, get some talent, leave it to the original masters.
The crew shot the show for a 4:3 frame. This was the artistic intention, and this is the way it is supposed to be viewed to get the most out of the shots. 16:9 will only add more scenery, which is bound to ruin at least a few scenes, even if the cameras and crew were digitally edited out. Colour balancing is usually also intentional, so unless it doesn't look right, and the original crew agree it should be edited, don't touch it. Otherwise, I'd be happy with a 'remastered for HD' version with better special effects than the 90's could give us. It's just that it takes a lot more than just going back to the film and processing it again. The original crews need to be on board to point out what was intentional and what wasn't, the screen format needs to stay untouched, and the remaster needs to be faithful. Unless Joss & Co work on it, I don't see any way in which it won't be a crap job.
That is why Joss Whedon should talk with Warner Bros Entertainment in buying the Buffy franchise from 20th Century Fox. At least Warner Bros will make it right
Fuk You Studios don't just buy (or, for that matter, sell) valuable properties like that, especially if those properties are a tv show that ended more than 10 years ago. They don't sell because they have value and they don't buy because it's too expensive and most of the profit was already made. They would never get to a deal about who should keep what and it's not really worth the effort. Also, I don't know why you'd think WB would treat it better.
While not in HD, Netflix retains the episode recaps. This is especially exciting for me because I love the episode recap that opens up 'The Gift" just because it's a great summary of the entire series at that point.
Julie James Well Fox (US) started to include the recaps on their shows right after Buffy s7 came out. Angel S5 had the recaps, so did Roswell, The Pretender...etc No reason to believe they wouldn't be included on Blu-Ray ;)
Julie James The reason you didn't get the recaps in the re-releases is because they've been using the same discs (same content) since the first release. They didn't create new discs, just copied the same old ones. A Blu-Ray release would be totally different, and I would be extremely surprised if they didn't include the recaps. But we should insist on that, just in case :)
+DegrassiInstantStar Netflix doesn't have Buffy in HD, and the widescreen version is the same as the European dvds. But I made comparisons and Netflix UK definitely has the best SD version I've ever seen (better than the dvds because less compressed), the later seasons almost look like HD sometimes (Netflix US doesn't look as good, and doesn't offer widescreen).
SunnydaleArchives The US Netflix used to offer 16:9 ratio episodes of "Buffy", as I've watched them, and they looked better than what Pivot has been offering, though I much prefer a 4:3 ratio.
And whatever company Fox is using, they're still screwing things up with season 4 and 5. They got better at fixing the goofs, but the rest is still a mess.
they did a great job remastering Star Trek TOS, and Next Generation for Blu ray. I wish there would be a Buffy blu , as it's another of my favourite shows. But remastered properly. Not like this. By people who actually are passionate about the show
That's the thing. I love the whole 'dark and mysterious' vibe of the whole show which was possible because of the original filters( I'm sure everyone does). Buffy is supposed to be dark. Not all clear and visible in the light! That said, some of the effects don't look so bad in HD...fix this FOX
Thanks, that's very nice. If you want to know more about seasons 4-7: facebook.com/notes/buffy-the-vampire-slayer-hd-blu-ray/whats-wrong-with-buffys-hd-part-2-october-2016-update/678161978952760/
Why is there a need to remaster it anyway? This series is from the '90s. It doesn't make sense when the old content looks all shiny and new. It is like knights of the medival ages running around with laser swords. There will always be the feeling that something doesn't fit.
I'm so sad to realize that only now when I have only season 7 to watch to finish the show, I watched this video!! I was watching the remastered this entire time without realizing how bad it was... Just makes me feel like I lost the whole "vibe" of the show :( But thank you very much for the video! It made me wanna rewatch everything again when I'm done
I noticed that they cut stuff out when they switched it to the HD on Netflix, I watched Once More With Feeling and I noticed lyrics to some songs were cut out. I don't get why the hell they did that.
On the first time OMWF aired (where they went several minutes over), at the end of "Under your spell", they cut the scene mid word on "You make me com(plete)". But in the CD, DVD, etc. version of the song, they cut it after the full "complete" - losing a great bit of wordplay.
Glad to see somebody gets it right when pointing out actual mistakes. Although there should be no shortage of editors who'd love to work on a remaster of Buffy and care enough to get it right. I'd rather point the finger at FOX's budgetary constraints making for rediculous deadlines and therefore not enough time to give it the love and attention it deserves.
Ngl, i find the Angel HD remaster on Disney+ even worse. Some transition effects literally only cover the 4:3 part of the scene with the sides not being obscured, sometimes a frequently reused establishing shot will be cropped to 16:9, pillarboxed or stretched (there's no consistency). Much of it looks badly upscaled from sd all the way through. At times it feels like they hit a hypothetical "export to 16:9" button and didn't actually check every episode for errors. At least with Buffy HD it's a bit more subtle. I wish they'd give us the option to choose like they did with the Simpsons (although granted, that show was just cropped to widescreen iirc).
Buffy is not meant to be in HD, and as much as i love it i really hope it doesnt come out on blu ray as it would only be more ruined, unless they get the original team back in to do it leave it as it is as its perfect already
I don't understand why these companies do this to older shows and movies, it never makes it look better. These HD hatchet jobs take all the texture and depth of colour out of scenes and ironically makes them look more dated because the lightness and smoothness makes the CGI more obvious. I'm so glad I bought the DVD boxset years ago.
The original version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is 100% much better than HD why do people mess with good stuff, just leave them the way they are which is perfect.
never really watched the show, nor did I heard of a HD remastered, but even a non-fan like me know the HD team f*ck up a show in many ways by watching this Video and the (understandably) angry comments.
These editing mistakes are idiotic. I have no idea about any of this, but even I wouldn't make it wide screen if that would mean cameras, lights and people that shouldn't be in the shot were in the shot as a result. The fuck are they doing???
omg, they totally blown it. The funny thing is they have spend it a lot of money to create this hd version which at the end it is something you need to drop to the trash.
What a shame they ruined it... the dusting looks horrible, the editing mistakes are amateurish, ... the lighting effects ruin it... wow... horrible butcher job! I would buy a proper version on Bluray but not a rekt version.... :(
I never watched any episode of this show, but what the team has done to remaster it is very terrible. Changing the aspect ratio was an enormous mistake, and it's just obvious that they didn't even try to match the original scenes
Yes, I'm sure this is the worst TV remaster ever. Can I ask you how did you find our video? There has been a lot of views since last week and we don't know why.
I found it through my suggestions, i watch a lot of videos about CGI and Cinema so that might be linked... I also watched comparison videos of different versions of the star wars original trilogy lately
FOX went with whoever gave them the lowest bid for the re-master and whoever took the job did not understand the size of the task. Not one of these episodes should have gotten past a QC department.
They should have left it the way it was.Joss Whedon had it that way for a reason.I feel bad for new people who begin to watch the show in the remaster because it might turn them off seeing all those things that shouldn't be seen in it.Like camera crew and all the other stuff they changed when they should have just left it the hell alone >_
Pivot's HD version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a total disgrace! I very sincerely hope that when the time comes for it to go to Blu-Ray that FOX brings in Joss Whedon to advise the remastering team what was intended and what wasn't! BTW...I am in favour of keeping 4x3! #buffythevampireslayer #buffy
Julie James Well said by you too! Here's hoping that FOX and Joss pull it together and get the *ultimate* and *true* vision of Buffy released on to Blu-Ray in the near future!
The issue with the color grading is they clearly didn't hire a DIT for the remastering job. Digital imaging technicians are responsible for keeping the color consistent using color lookup tables, as well as for grading the color to achieve the desired look/feel/tone. Without this training, (or even checking the final source for matching) the editor was guessing and consistency goes out the window. The changes that were made in the final HD versions have all the earmarks of someone playing with color correction without knowing what they are doing. By and large, just being really heavy handed with the changes, and applying them en mass instead of considering each shot.
Thank you for posting this. As a huge Buffy fan from the time I was 9 or 10 years old I cannot believe how much was changed. The "remastered" version is awful! Why change the brightness? Everything in Buffy from the brightness of the scene, the way it was filmed, to the props in the shot had a point. I also don't understand why they felt the need to crop or make it wide screen. It was not the way Joss Whedon envisioned it! I'm really happy that I got the dvd's about 10 years ago so I can see it the way it was originally done. If they want to have a "remastered" version just leave the episodes alone and give us tons of special features like interviews and behind the scenes videos!
I would love to see a re-do of this hd remaster but for them to really take there time. I would rather wait an extra year than watch a really good show full of editing mistakes.
They should ask Paramount about the HD remastering of Star Trek: The Next Generation. I gather they put a lot of effort into that, involved original teams where possible, and generally did a good job.
This is completely degrading and unacceptable by FOX for doing a shitty job of "upgrading" Buffy for newer HD TVs. Definitely need to fix these mistakes and make sure that Joss and any of the original team are supervising! Also, when/if they ever decide to release a blu-ray version of Buffy in the future, I think they should include the "previously on Buffy the Vampire Slayer" recaps as well as the unaired 1996 Buffy Pilot as an extra.
Put blue tint where there was never any, remove it in the one scene it was used.
Classic.

the dvdset or the show?
Treating a masterpiece like a piece of commercial fodder. There should be some kind of copyright law that can strip a copyright holder if they show total disregard for the care of the art work. In the absence of that, please try to create as loud a stink as possible against Fox. Not that they care. But, while I have been craving a HD release, I will not pay for a botched job. The Wire set an artistic precedent on creative control. All Fox have to do is follow it. But they're just jerks in suits.
Star trek Shitscovery. Hold my progressives.
I'm still hoping they bring Buffy to Blu-Ray, but they had better correct this first. I've watched Buffy ever since it's original air date, and own the original book style DVD's. I couldn't watch it like this, it's ruined. Please fix it Fox/Pivot!
...did they get film school kids to edit these for class credit? WTF Fox!
Probably. What ever keeps the costs low I guess.
@Brendan Milburn hell yes we would have!
So... lemmie get this straight-- they went to remaster the Buffy episodes.. and they play around re-doing some of the F/X... but they can't bother to get *basic* stuff right like making sure the crew doesn't appear in wide shots? smdh.
It was aggressively lazy and incompetent.
Cropping=Sin
And this HD editon=MEGA SIN!
+daAmazin FatB0y You meant cropping right? Although the job Fox did IS CRAP.
SunnydaleArchives lol yb it was a typo.
The atmosphere is absolutely ruined. Everything is so painfully bright now.
Back here and livid again because Netflix are now using these "remastered" versions. I can't believe it's come to this.
I know right!!! I freaking hate that
They are? I'm re watching it currently and I don't seem to see the changes.
You can use Netflix live chat to complain about the problems. They have already fixed a few issues
Good to know. I wish i knew that sooner so I could;ve seen X-Files in 4x6. Although "The Truth Is Out There" was always left out on netflix for some reason until they went HD with X-Files
And they have the edited version of Once more with Feeling......
I am. So pressed. About this.
whoa whoa david is that u?! how did i not know one of my favorite youtubers likes buffy
Don't worry guys! There isn't really a problem with the filters. We can just say Angel is suddenly immune to the sun because he prematurely discovered the Gem of Amara. Totes makes sense. :P Seriously though, this is ridiculous. As a die-hard Buffy-fan I remain loyal to the original (not messed up) version.
that's why I'm glad I have the original dvd box sets I can watch them any time and don't have to deal with this crap.
we are happy that we own all of the DVDs of Buffy the vampire slayer!
You got The Passion of the Nerd Guy!
Yes he's GREAT!
Buffy HD yes he is. AVE IT NERD!
urrgghhh bluish filter.... reminds me of Fucking Twilight shit -___________- are they trying to twi-shit-light Buffy?
This is just the WORST. And Netflix is the worst for streaming this shitty ass version of BtVS- the essence of the show is completely lost in many scenes by the color shifts and cropping. Arm-chair editors, get some talent, leave it to the original masters.
normally i'm not nit-picky about stuff like this.... but this is awful....
That's the guy from The Passion of the Nerd.
Ruining BTVS = To me crying, ripping my hair out and wanting to kill the people who ruined it!
I love the show and it should not be ruined by idiots!!
The new dusting FX looks awful, nothing like what we know and love about vamp dusting.
That is why Joss Whedon should talk with Warner Bros Entertainment in buying the Buffy franchise from 20th Century Fox. At least Warner Bros will make it right
Doesn't work that way.
TheRLification Why not?
Fuk You
Studios don't just buy (or, for that matter, sell) valuable properties like that, especially if those properties are a tv show that ended more than 10 years ago. They don't sell because they have value and they don't buy because it's too expensive and most of the profit was already made. They would never get to a deal about who should keep what and it's not really worth the effort. Also, I don't know why you'd think WB would treat it better.
TheRLification Certain times studios loan out their properties in a deal such as Paramount did with Warner Bros. for Friday The 13th on Blu.
Fuk You
Don't really have the time to research it, but I believe you. I just think it isn't very common and in this case it is very unlikely.
+Tony DeCaro Netflix also did a better job at making the show HD and in 16:9 ratio.
This still depresses me.
Especially now Buffy’s HD version is on ‘Facebook Watch’
And now Disney+ 😢
Fox just add to the reasons why I hate them day by day. I'm glad the Simpsons used to mercilessly mock them in the early seasons. Garbage corporation.
they did a great job remastering Star Trek TOS, and Next Generation for Blu ray.
Fantastic analysis. This made me appreciate the original even more, particularly the color, lighting, and filters, and the moods they evoke.
Just makes me feel like I lost the whole "vibe" of the show :(
But thank you very much for the video! It made me wanna rewatch everything again when I'm done
It's amazing how lighting can make such a huge difference.
it ruins everything, specially the sunset part with Bangel and all the daylight scenes who were supposed to be at night!!
If they fix all those issues for a Bluray release, I'd definitely buy it. Otherwise, I'll stay with the good old version.
It´s like a computer program decided the changes for the "HD" version (which is probably even the case!)....
I noticed that they cut stuff out when they switched it to the HD on Netflix, I watched Once More With Feeling and I noticed lyrics to some songs were cut out. I don't get why the hell they did that.
It's the syndicated version. But the full HD version was broadcasted on 6ter channel so... I don't know why Netflix only got the short version.
Netflix used to have the original version until they uploaded this garbage.
Hulu has the original version.
On the first time OMWF aired (where they went several minutes over), at the end of "Under your spell", they cut the scene mid word on "You make me com(plete)". But in the CD, DVD, etc. version of the song, they cut it after the full "complete" - losing a great bit of wordplay.
Tom Leonard When I watched it on Netflix a few years ago they cut it in the middle of the word. Of course now it isn't even on Netflix at all.
Joss must be rolling over in his grave. You say he's not dead? You're wrong, watching the HD version killed him............
All we can hope is that the remastering being broadcasted on Pivot is a draft, and that the Blu-Ray will be the definitive version.
Why do these teams consistently mess up HD remasters?! "You had one job!" the world cries...
Watching this Right now .. I’m great full for my original Buffy DVD’s ♥️
thats like removing smoking in old movies - STOP doing the revisionist mindfuck thing dammit! Leave the stuff alone!
These editing mistakes are idiotic. I have no idea about any of this, but even I wouldn't make it wide screen if that would mean cameras, lights and people that shouldn't be in the shot were in the shot as a result. The fuck are they doing???
I have signed the petition!!!!
wow really great breakdown and comparison. This really makes it very clear what should be done.
omg, they totally blown it.
I'll stick with my original 4 by 3 DVD version thank you very much!!!!
Oh ok thank you!
Yes, the original trilogy of "Star Wars" is a mess too. But we can't blame the studio in this case, only George Lucas.
even Spike thinks buffy's hd remaster came back wrong :)
Yeah, FOX totally butchered it. 😡
I thought this was going to be dumb crap only film geeks would notice, but yikes.
FOX went with whoever gave them the lowest bid for the re-master and whoever took the job did not understand the size of the task. Not one of these episodes should have gotten past a QC department.
They can't just change a show!!!
Do publishers rewrite book without the authors permission as well? No!
This is astoundingly amateurish.
I'm guessing the people who edited the new HD version WEREN'T fans of the show
Wow, they really made Inca Mummy Girl look stupid..she just stares at her hand for no reason.
Wow this is so fucking ridiculous....
"applying them en mass instead of considering each shot." meaning some bean counter said get it done quick, i dont care if it is done right.
They tried to enhance a masterpiece technically and butchered it totally. :-p
The brightness issues are the biggest fuck up of the lot in my opinion.
And this is why I watch Buffy on Hulu. They don't use the crap remaster.
Awesome video!
In short they fracked up
fun fact. at 2:07 the clock reads 1134, if you flip it upside down it spells hell.
I would love to see a re-do of this hd remaster but for them to really take there time. I would rather wait an extra year than watch a really good show full of editing mistakes.
As a true fan of Buffy the vampire slayer my heard just broke in half 💔 but at least I'll always have the old fashioned DVDs to watch
wow that is bad
y'all are my people. I get furious about stuff like this
They should ask Paramount about the HD remastering of Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Also, when/if they ever decide to release a blu-ray version of Buffy in the future, I think they should include the "previously on Buffy the Vampire Slayer" recaps as well as the unaired 1996 Buffy Pilot as an extra.
and once again, Fox ruins everything it touches
