  • Do you give money to beggars? Presenter Reya El-Salahi doesn't know who she can trust and who she can't when it comes to handing over her pound. She's looking at the issue of begging on London streets, as she tries to work out who are the con artists and who are in genuine need. Reya spends time in a shelter to figure out what help is out there for those who have hit on hard times, as well as meeting ex- beggars who have turned their life around. Reya also explores the issue of begging gangs with human trafficking expert Bernie Gravett. Determined to find out how easy is it to make money out of Londoners, Reya hits the streets and has a go at begging herself.
London Live's exclusive new documentary strand getting under the skin of our city.

I learned from a homeless guy in Los Angeles to just give them what they really want to help them make it through.
I took a guy to a nearby sandwich shop & offered to buy him anything he wanted. It was obvious he didn't really want food.
I said, "look man, here's 10 bucks to get yourself drugs or whatever YOU need".
When I see homeless folk I tell 'em, "let's be honest, here's some money for drugs to blot this shit out for a while". Other people can get so preachy & sanctimonious.

Thank you for this. This is why it is so important to talk to the person, and to pray for discernment, when giving money to beggars. You can easily tell which ones are on drugs from just a brief conversation. Yes, sometimes your money will be used badly, but that is no excuse not to give. Exchanging a few words, asking about their life/family, is usually enough to know which ones are genuine. The genuine ones value a conversation more than a few dollars.

I've lived in London for 30 years. When I arrived, begging and homelessness was at an epic level. The whole of Lincoln's Inn Fields had been colonised and turned into a "bash" village. I was shocked and gave without question. My job as a courier meant that I worked on the street and was never a few steps away from a beggar almost every day. Being begged from was as routine as making deliveries. I had to become selective. If I say that I was begged from each day - sometimes more than once - it would be no exaggeration. After 30 years that would generally enable me to claim that I've been begged from thousands of times. Never once in all those times, has anyone begged me for work. They all wanted to miss that step out and get straight to the reward that I was working between 50-60hours to earn...Over the years, I've learnt quite a lot about the begging business, now I donate to "Crisis". And that's all.

I stopped giving change to homeless and beggars, ive learned that they only spend it on drugs and drink, so im basically helping fuel their addictions and thats solving nothing. Now i buy them a sandwich or when they ask i tell them - "i can buy you something to eat" and some of them have said no thanks.

      Other things are more needed.
      1)shelter 2) access to a shower 3)Money for laundry 4) Cigarettes 5) Clothes 6) toiletries , deodorant 7) Bus fare etc...

One more thing, in Birmingham im seeing many old shops empty because of the newer, more stylish locations like the revamped Bullring. Now why doesnt the Government take some of the money we pay in tax, and use that on these empty shops as basic accommodation for the homeless? Especially in Winter-time. They wouldnt even have to turn it into anything (for risk of drug-takers abusing and ruining it), but atleast use it to allow the homeless to camp out in so they have some shelter.

Certainly there are bad/rip off charities... however... there are also good, well run charities, headed by honest altruistic human beings.
The person who donates has a certain responsibility to do their own 'homework' to find out those who are worthy of their contribution.
After doing much research I have found that two worthy groups are *Save The Children* and also * The *Prasad Project*.. which passes along 95 cents out of every dollar by keeping expenses extremely low.
Some charities which totally flunked my 'sniff' test were the Red Cross and the Jimmy Fund... where a ridiculous amount went to the CEOs.
The honest, hard working charities who do real good in the world should not have to suffer because of the greedy, mismanaged ones. So... Give Responsibly.

Appointing a pop-music video commenting-style presenter to deliver what seems to be some brief and sensationalist field-research, is problematic. An issue as complex as inner city street-begging demands more thorough explanation, particularly over key phrases it raises like 'organised crime' amongst beggars. This video shows learned viewers nothing new insofar as reminding us that alcoholism and drug addiction does not always equate to having backwards morals. The whole operation of this mini-flick begs more explanation. Instead of doing good, it risks heightening mainstream paranoia and suspicion surrounding begging, homelessness and addiction. Irresponsibly, it is not thorough in any attempt to build bridges between an earning and housed public and a begging lesser housed or un-housed public. Let's note their presenter's failure to realise how London's homeless are in fact Londoners too.
Another cack-handedly unelaborated moment is the presenter's comment regarding public charity towards the homeless, as they adopt a snide tone, describing it as "actually, the real reason's to make themselves feel better". This pop-style, would-be documentary scratches the basic surface, but leaves very crucial socio-political issues left hanging in the air, and open to dangerous misinterpretation and misunderstanding. Somehow, this doesn't strike me as the type of high-brow documentary to have intended to ask such questions on purpose and then leave a lingering impact somehow. It's simply crass through it's inexperience in documentary-making. More statistics and less whimsical opinion would have made this worth watching for an adult audience who wished to learn more than they already speculate about. Nonetheless, crass voyeurism can be an entry-level towards awakening public empathy. Merely because of this; I would only recommend showing this to forward-thinking young children or adolescents who might be vaguely interested in learning about inner city poverty or how to solve it.

Selling the Big Issue is better than begging. By the way I know that guy Chester. He used to work in the music industry. But I haven't seen him for years now. The last time I saw him was about three years ago when he was sleeping in Oxford Street. By the way to get into a homeless hostel you have to be able to claim benefits. Which you can only do if you have got identification documents. And when people go into a hostel they cannot afford to work because the rents for hostels are so very high. Like 200 to 250 pounds a week. And it is harder than ever to get work now because employers require people to provide inditification documents like photo ID, proof of address and proof of national insurance number. I know because I was homeless or in squats for 22 years from 1996 to 2018. This documentary is also wrong because a lot of homeless people like I was do not drink alcohol or take drugs. I used to sell the Big Issue and used to use my money to buy warm waterproof clothing. An extra warm sleeping bag. Tents and luggage bags. And to by bicycles to travel about on. When I was homeless I used mostly camp in woodland and then cycle to my Big Issue pitch and then cycle a homeless daycentre to meet up with other homeless friends. The Big Issue also helped me to get passport to use as identification. That helped me to get off the streets. I stayed with a homeless organisation called Emmaus where homeless people have to work ful ltime in return for food, shelter and a very small wage. Then eventually got a part time cleaning job.

If they're hungry there are benefits, food banks and many other charities that can help them. This is a rich country, no one needs to beg on the streets. @Dub Tzar I will continue to do what i can to help homeless people by giving them food and water. As for "choice" i work to earn my "money" and i pay taxes to politicians in a Government who use most of that money to fuel their rich, lavish lifestyles with bonuses each and every year.
I do not have a "choice" as to where exactly the tax i pay goes, but the Government do have a choice, and (as i stated already) they could use the tax hard work people (like myself) pay to open up many of the empty shops along high streets, to be used as shelters for homeless people.

    Hi very nice informative video.
    But it males me wonder.
    1. Why do we GIVE these people money?
Is it because we GIVE it to help them out to buy a coffee, a tea may be a breakfast or lunch..
2, These are the things we are giving to help.
3, so we are giving to help them. Yes.
4, but as they say in the video we shouldn't give because they spend it on drugs. Yes.
5, AND IF we stop giving because of the drug use., what will happen then ? Where will they fund the addiction from..
6, they might start breaking in people's homes, they might start ROBBING old age pensioners, or women, or children, it could be anything bad.
7, so I think if my loose change stops all these bad things from happening then it's better to give.
    8. We are giving to help in the first place, so what difference does it make to the giver. They are doing a good deed either way. If it's not a coffee, tea or lunch, it's stopping crime. .
If drug addiction was normal like coffee, tea or lunch, then I don't think they would hide it from the givers.
They still have some shame to not openly say what they going to buy.
End of the day helping someone for something they need is what matters,
GOD knows the giver gave to help ,and he will be rewarded for the good deed.
    I believe in karma..
Life works in mysterious ways..we are tested in every way possible.
    Thanks for your time.
    Bless you all.😊

Nice documentary. Despite the presenter going through all that, her conclusion was a pretty ignorant. The beggar was spot on when he said that people give because they want to feel good about themselves, a selfish, jerking off of the ego, and not to genuinely help. If you want to genuinely help go out there yourself and work with the communities, work with the charities and volunteer.

To demonstrate, lets say she looks a passerby in the eye and asks,
"Sir can you spare anything, I need money for a place to stay"
The passerby can respond in three ways:
      1. Keep on walking and ignore
      2. say "I don't have any money"..(lol everybody has money.)
      3. Feel guilty about doing 1) or 2) so goes ahead and gives ( but would have kept walking if she didn't ask)

its a private transaction; giving to beggars. who to trust? no trust is needed. if you give freely, then you don't need to rely upon your own idea of acceptable transaction. It does not need justification. there is no right or wrong, or if someone is making thousands of pounds a week, it doesn't make them ungenuine. they ask for money genuinely, money is either given or not.
A beggar in Edinburgh told me he was making very good money near st Giles, very good money, 50 per cent more than the average annual pre tax salary.
nevertheless, it is a tough wicket and there has to be a cost subjecting oneself like that. we all beg in socially acceptable ways. we want help, attention, listen to me, love me, help me, kiss me, fund me and so on. this is merely the sharper end.
