  • Welcome to Brighton where at the end of the rainbow the streets are paved with gold - or are they? For too many the reality falls far short. What do you think of civilisation in the UK? I think it would be a very good idea! And that is surely proved as the rich pontificate on TV while the poor freeze and die in our streets!

I feel so sorry for these guys. I really do. No fault of their own, things can go wrong even if you are earning £50,000 a year, something can go wrong and you lose everything. Always a worry for me. I am a single working mum, with a mortgage, I only work part time and rely on my credit card so in debt. I pray I dont end up like these guys. Bless them. They seem lovely, really nice guys.

I'me about tell a story about one time when I spent 2 days on the street. It was the worst 2 days of my life. I was living with someone who had a nasty temper at the time. One day everything seemed to go wrong and no matter what I did I couldn't do anything right and she started an argument. It actually got to the point where she had started hitting me on the side of the head. This wasn't the first time she had physically attacked me. Everytime she attacked me she would tell all our neighbours I had attacked her. My family was in another part of the country. I was on Jobseekers at the time and they were sending me to this place once a week which was supposed to help me get back into work. Anyway back to her attacking me. Usually after a few minutes she would stop but she didn't this time. I said if she didn't I would ring the police and she started taunting me saying I didn't have the guts to ring the police and she continued hitting me. In the end I realised she wasn't going to stop. So I managed to get away and go ring the police in the lounge. But as the phone connected to the woman on the other end of the line I couldn't bring myself to have her arrested, so I put the phone down. She then came into the room and started taunting me again, when the phone rang. She answered it and it was the police operator who had answered, ringing back to make sure everything was alright. She started making up a story about how I had attacked her how I did this, how i did that. The operator then asked to speak to me and got my side of the story. 3 police officers turned up. 2 started questioning me and 1 her. Her story involved her just saying he did this, he did that. I told them what happened from the start right up to when they turned up. They soon realised I was telling the truth. After a bit they said maybe I should leave the property for my own safety. I agreed and packed somethings in a back pack. I knew I would be getting money soon. They tried to find out where I could go for a place to sleep but in the end I just said I could sort something out. For the first night everything went fine, i slept on the beach front in a shelter. Then on the second day a group of people had realised I was homeless and sleeping on the streets and they harassed me for a few hours and I got scared they were going to attack me. But after a couple of hours they grew tired and left me alone, but the incident left me shaken and scared and just looking forward to when I got my money so I could move back to where my family was. Then I realised I had left a letter at the address for my next meeting with the people who were supposed to be helping me get a job I thought it was the following week, but it turned out to be the day before and I realised my money would have been stopped by the jobcentre. I managed to ring the place up and explain why I hadn't turned up and they told me I would have to go to the jobcentre and see them. I went to the jobcentre and broke down and told the woman everything. She put it on the computer. But then she told me where I could actually go to get help so I went their and a very nice woman from the local councils homeless department came and saw me. I told her everything and she said she would sort me out with a room to stay in. I said I would only need it till I could get my money and get a ticket back to where my family lived as they would help me. She then turned around and said she could arrange a coach ticket to where my family lived that day if I wanted it and I said yes. She said she needed to speak to my family to confirm I could go their and they confirmed it. The woman arranged a coach ticket and she bought me some lunch in the local cafe. By the end of the day I was back with my family. If it wasn't for the woman in the Jobcentre I would have had to continue sleeping on the streets scared for my life, till I got some money together to bye a coach ticket.

@James Burton I guess the housing crisis is similar with the fat epidemic, you either are going to go with the unlikely theory that obesity and homelessness is up 20x or 100x in the last 50 years because of 100x poor personal choices, 100x bad individual attitudes etc, people who eat, eat, eat without exercising, or you will try to be reasonable, facts based etc and see that it is a "system". Essential elements of this system is that, for example, your hardworking uncle/cousin/daughter/bff does not have the extra room they might have had 50 years ago, your better half is 100x more likely to break up with you and kick you out than to work with you or tolerate you, the council is not in the process of building another 1000 affordable units this year, and so on and so on. If you care and, let's face it, the average James Burton does not care, you will work against this system. Now, it is true once somebody enters a "lifestyle" for a few months or certainly a few years, they become trapped in an even worse system/pattern, and a lot of those people need a detox from that lifestyle even if they are not substance abusers. They are so many that it will require a detox system, something that to the best of my knowledge does not exist anywhere in the world, so it is a system that will have to be built.

You are correct Maria G. been homeless, had to also car-camp multiple tmes over the years between rentals (either short of money, or limited affordable rentals, etc). Until you understand what it is like, how fragile the support network can be, how over the years bit by bit government has up the taxation but cut the services, and males especially ones with mental health problems and over 45, are lowest priority on the list. woman and children first, and even now, that is limited. Last time i "car camped" i noticed a young woman and her young child doing the same. She worked every day, they slept in their car, she taught him to be very quiet at night so not to attract attention, as she saved for money to get a place while paying off debts. yup.. homeless with a job is quite common, that means, few people are getting paid a "living" wage .. its all starvation wages and debt. Watch out for the credit trap when your on the low end, usually you cannot keep up with it and the bills for living. Fortunately there is a 10 cent per can /bottle scheme here, which helped me get the money i needed at the time to get the money to get a place again (once you have a place you can then claim benefits here) and that got me back into a job..

What upsets me the most seeing people being forced to suffer in this situation is the fact that no western country should have one homeless person. The UK is the 5th richest western country. There is absolutely no excuse how any civilized country this day in age can sit back and allow this to happen. The Government could end homelessness very easily, and the fact the Torries not only do nothing but have made the problem worse with welfare reforms, the bedroom tax, the roll out of Universal Credit which is clearly unfit for purpose, forcing the most vulnerable people in society to wait 5 weeks or more without any money, attacking the disabled with assessments and employing liars that ensure that the disabled lose their benefits and have to fight for months, sometimes a year or more to get them back through tribunals only to have to go through the whole thing all over again. Sanctions for the most minor of infractions, loans while people wait for their first UC payment that put the poorest in debt, allowing companies to get away with paying employees a pittance and zero hours contracts which are little more than legalized slavery, councils refusing to build new affordable housing while estates built in the 50's and 60's are being torn down instead of repaired, sold off to developers and luxury flats built in their place with maybe a small percentage being set aside for a few social housing units. It is absolutely disgusting how the British Government is treating the people that need help the most and on top of it, instead of owning up to the mistakes they have made they continue to falsely claim that UC is working and that the unemployment rate is going down just to save face. It makes me sick to my stomach.

The benefits offered to UK citizens are still not really enough but more than that and they do get offered the housing first but there just isn't enough. We need to build more social housing and stop tax avoidance and then there would be plenty to go around.

The spokeswoman knows how to talk sweetly to the press, but the police deal a lot differently with homeless than she's describing. It shouldn't be a crime to be homeless, therefore don't treat them like criminals. I understand that homeless people cannot just sleep anywhere they want, but surely they could set up a tent city on some wasteland with washing facilities and electricity like they have in America? Or even an old warehouse with volunteer work could be transformed into a safe shelter.

Brighton helps the homeless more than other areas and the Green dominated council does not persecute them as much as other areas and as a consequence the homeless flock to Brighton and as I write this there are tents on the roads in the city centre, outside the shops and restaurants and they are not moved on as they are not considered to be causing an obstruction. Brighton as a result is sinking under a tide of homeless.

1 Labours open door policy which allowed approx 6 MILLION people to come and live here without anything like that number of new houses being built
2 Alcohol has never been cheaper than it is today at the likes of bargain booze
3 Drugs have never been more widely used than they are today

Look at the job market right now and see just how hard it is to get a full time long term job. Most places now want part time and zero hour jobs. So sad how the streets have aged these people. And he was correct most people are a paycheck away from being homeless. Back when the gov shut down for a month even though we got backpay the next month if you had no savings that month was so hard. I had fellow employees with eviction notices when the gov came back on. It was horrible. Idk what I would have done without my lil savings and family and I have no kids only responsible for me. So bless these people. May they get back on their feet.

But these people had no excuse, you had the foresight to put a bit aside every month, why didn't they?

"It could happen to you tomorrow" that's why I bought an air rifle, a fire starting kit and an insulated tent with pots and pans. Live in the woods, hunt for food. Better then sleeping on concrete.

Wish the two guys on the bench, lived here, I could give them temporary jobs, just working around my house. (But the one guy needs to do something about his cough first.) I would pay them well. If they did very
good work, I would keep them on a while. As it stands for them now, just a few days wages would suit them. Each 50 USD a day each, I don't think they would knock back. The work here is not hard, for young guys like them, but jobs impossible for me these days.

Okay. For starters, $50 a day isn’t even national minimum wage. Secondly, we once offered a homeless guy $200 plus lunch and dinner for a days help with some yard work. He said, “Nah. Just give me what cash ya got on ya.” Aw, nope. First and last time we ever did that. His sign said: Out Of Work. Anything Helps. But all he wanted was a handout. Never again.

Some harsh criticism of the Council here for not helping. Just wonder how many homeless have come from outside Brighton but the Council are still expected to house them and provide support services even though this is being funded by local people through Council Tax? Bearing in mind that the Council have to find money to protect vulnerable adults and children, pay for care for the elderly, and so on. Plenty of tough choices to be made.
