Since 2017, Greater Manchester's Mayor Andy Burnham vowed to eradicate homelessness from the streets of the city.
4 years on, several housing schemes have been put in place to help those in desperate needs. However, people are still seemingly being left behind...
As COVID-19 swept the UK, I took to the streets of Manchester, to see what life is really like for those sleeping rough through the heights of a pandemic.

Exactly rite theyv hardly built a social house in 40 years ,country's a haven of dear private housing out of reach and even dearer rents were people can't afford to pay bills,everything's set up for the rich to get richer at any cost or misery .

Never mind COVID being a pandemic. This right here, homelessness is a pandemic that's been around far longer. This breaks my heart 💔. Never have I been more grateful for a roof over my head and a safe, warm place to lay my head 🙏🏻

Having worked with the homeless it’s very complicated . Many of the individuals that I have tried to place have complained about a small clean room because they don’t want to share a bathroom- yet went back to a filthy street where they were peeing in bottles or behind a wall. Others were given studio flats,but only stayed a few days before gong back to the street without telling anyone- leaving the property empty and unavailable to the next person until it’s been discovers to be empty.
The best success I’ve had is travelling around the streets on nights with awful weather to scoop street dwellers up and get them settled in our church hall overnight . As it’s so temporary and they don’t get checked for alcohol or drugs for one night many seemed to prefer it. Problem is the hall can take days to get clean and sorted so that we can do it again - we’ve had people urinating and defaecating in the church hall even though there is a perfectly nice clean modern bathroom yards from where they are sleeping.
You do great work for humanity, thank you it seems that some can’t be helped especially the not using the toilet part and instead going where you sleep I just don’t understand that
they like to shit in public places.theyre js markin their territory. the next homeless dude that came in probably smelled the.scent then went and covered it with their own crap. great people!! they like being homeless
Well done for helping, however you cannot help some people, ifthey had any respect for those helping then they would not act in that manner, absolutely disgraceful & some don't deserve to be helped again!

After a spiral of depression in my 50's I ended up in debt and homeless, sleeping rough on the streets.
I was taken in by a charity and totally understand what you are saying.
There were others in the shelter that had been offered accomodation and turned it down, The charity ( St Mungoes ) offered me a place 300 miles from anywhere and anyone I knew. I took it ) just to get my life back on track.
I'm lucky in that I'm quite resilient, but I did find a lot of the people in the hostel that were just taking the piss.
Yes, there are a lot that have mental and drug problems, I've used Mind for support.
Anyway, next week am starting a course and also got a job interview,
Not every homeless person can be helped due to severe mental health and trauma. I work part time at a homeless shelter, which has rules to follow. Some people don't like to follow these rules and they don't like being told off by staff, so they end up going back to the streets telling everyone they meet that homeless shelters is worst than jail.
Housing is also another issue, those lucky enough to get into public/government housing sometimes trash the police, use it as a drug den or just party and drink with friends. They end up going back to the streets and blame the government for not giving them a home.
Amazing how this great government has housed 70k migrants in hotels and private accommodation with spending money to boot.

I spent 8 years on the streets of the uk...mainly in Glasgow, Nottingham, Newcastle, Liverpool,Coventry,Manchester, and many small towns...i was with a partner...i couldn't call it a boyfreind/ girlfriend partnership....we looked out for each other with absoult conviction..yes we had a love for each other...but we went each others own way in the end so we could move on...and upwards...not onl being together keep each other alive on the streets...if we had stayed together it would have also been the ending probably in death...2 wrongs don't make a right 🤷♀️....its since the day we went our own ways that I since been off the streets for over 15 years..doing very well and now a good mother to my children...yes you can become institutionalised to living on the streets...the fast pace, excitement,no commitments...but it can also get you, you know up there mentally, its the long cold days, the days when you dont have the drugs that help with the reality of the situation you are really in..when your not comforted by drugs warm quilt...and the cold shivering shock of reality hits you, has you gather your cardboard for your bed,and when the late street cleaners go by on their machines,( untill they wake you in the early cold morning) all the shoppers and last lot of ppl getting home to the warmth...while you look for your usual spot only to find someone has used that doorway for a piss...so you look for the next best quiet dry place...do i miss it...yeah sometimes if im honest...but omg am i so bloody gratefull...im one of the lucky ones, who got out of the vicious circle of homelessness...and made it work with the huge amount of support from many many different agencies...i walk through Glasgow city center ..16 odd years later and see my old pitch...i also see 1 or 2 ppl who i know/ knew still there...i think has i look at them and then to my 12 year old daughter holding my hand....OMG there for the grace of god go i....but really this wasnt from gods help, this was from a lot of hard work i did on myself....my daughter knows my past..i show her and tell her has we walk through the city ....shes not ashamed of me.. she is proud of me...and that alone is what keeps me going everyday.

Trust me you might not think you got trough this all by yourself God was with you all the way sometimes he has to let us suffer a little to let us really understand and respect when he knows it's our time he knew you wasn't ready that time but trust and believe he was with you trough it all , remember he gave his only divine son for us ,so always give God the glory he truly should be given because without him we can do nothing
It’s terrible there in the UK economic migrants that wash up on the shores are taking straight to five-star accommodation when we have our own citizens sleeping rough when will the UK government stop worrying about international scroungers and start putting all those tens of millions into short-term accommodation so the homeless can get back on their feet?

Too right. I live in Glasgow which has a horrendous homeless problem. But seems economic migrants and illegals get the red carpet treatment , being put up in hotels, money, lawyers etc all the help going it’s a fucking disgrace. Start helping our own citizens that have nothing not illegal scrounging bastards.

You can't imagine the anxiety, the fear, if they didn't they may take their own lives. It's that they're drug dependent - if they had insurance they'd be given klonpin, xanax, pain killers as most are suffering in pain from the hard life. Until you've been homeless...plus oftentimes they're cold and it warms them up, numbs the sad hopelessness that they know when they wake up it will start all over again and again. The emotional toll it takes on you makes you feel like you're less than nothing. Less than trash because at least one person's trash is another's treasure, but that only applies to objects - when it comes to human beings - they're less than trash. And to boot they have to watch immigrants be put into hotels while the citizens are left outside in the cold, starving and scared. That has to be psychologically soul destroying. Be well and take care. :)
Better feeling heat from a drug or some pain killer alcohol that feeling that big freeze.
The dinghy divers coming over the channel in this country illegally and getting the red carpet treatment and our own are like this

I lived on the streets. for a while. I didn't do drugs. I lived with someone who used to attack me everytime we had an argument and then she would tell people I attacked her even though I never laid a finger on her. One time the police got called and even they could tell she was lying. She had made sure everything was in her name so I had no legal rights to stay in the property and the police recommended I leave the property for my own safety.When I went to my family some they offered me a place to stay but they wanted to control my life. When I went to the council, they said because I was on my own, no family or health issues I was a low priority. I'me off the streets now, but I think in total out of the 42 years of my life I have spent about 10 years of it homeless.
People in prison are cared for more than someone who's homeless and in poverty.

When I was in UK. I saw empty boarded up streets under a constant grey sky, litter everywhere.
Homeless people sleeping in doorways. Opioid addicts out of their mind and women so drunk they urinated on the streets. It's a sad declined country

Last Christmas no one remembered me two Christmas ago no one remembered me.this Christmas when I woke up some one left a plate of popcorn next to me, this was my greatest Christmas gift ever :-)

Not me l CHOSE to get an education and make a decent wage. And my savings account is enough to keep me going for quite a fair amount of time. I don't drink, smoke or do drugs so that's how l can afford it. If people choose to have more kids than they can afford, or become addicts or criminals that's on them. Why should people who are doing the making the right choices in life be responsible for those that are not!They are offers shelter's but it's not good enough for them. They don't want to go into them because they can't drink or do drugs that's the real reason!

Either way, thank God, you're so happy and fulfilled. Try not to judge others as not everybody is the same and you'll probably find you appreciate what. You have even more🙏

@@dylskyh4439 My child hood was NO Little HOUSE ON The Prairie but any stretch. And l have a chronic disease that has me in and out of hospital on a fairly regular basis the only thing l am grateful for is l can afford to do it in a private hospital so it's a little more comfortable. But l had to push myself very hard to get the job l have now. I just saw a lot of entitlement in those people they interviewed in the video. They don't want to go to a hostel they want their own flat. Yes ABSOLUTELY we all want that but the VAST MAJORITY has to work very hard to achieve this. We don't just magically expect them to land in our hands. The REAL reason they don't want to go to a shelter or hostel is because there are rules there stopping them from conning in st all hours and doing drugs or drinking alcohol. My st of them seemed quite l entitled.!?!?
This is a problem that has been going on for too long. Everyone should have a home in 2022 ! xx

I saw an American documentary where a homeless man said some homeless people only want to get better at being homeless. The man in question said he’d made poor decisions but was working on getting back to a normality, he didn’t have drug or alcohol problems. So sad seeing people who only feel comfortable on the streets
The outreach help, & voluntary services in Manchester, when I was homeless, were unbelievable. Plenty of great food every night etc. But getting a bed for the night was difficult, & the night shelter's could be very lively, & dangerous places, when they were open!

Great video, thanks for this. I work as Homeless Prevention Officer for a local authority, I can tell you there are two main issues that we as a service and those who are homeless face. Firstly, often the problem stems far beyond just not having a roof over your head. The causes of homelessness are not tackeld such as mental health, enough social housing, precarious 0 Hour contracts, addiction issues and on. I often see in my work, that we rehouse the same characters time and time again only for them to come right back around as homeless. This is often due to their problems not being dealt with, proving that just having shelter is not the winning formula. There has to be more funding for our mental health services, strengthened employee rights legislation etc. This feeds into the second concern and the most important, government funding and the building of more social housing. I can tell you that most local authorities are cash-strapped and cannot help even those in priority need in a timely manner. This is simply down to government funding. Being short staffed and having little money to work with. Central government need to do more.

@@dannysouthendutdramsay1212 exactly beit probably unknowingly we went back and back back again. i was homeless for 5 yrs. and in Alabama the police dont let u sleep in streets or even in the public sight. not even in wal mart parking lot so they have it super hard down here. it took me actually doin a year and a day in jail then to a 1 yr half way house to at least get a hold of the route cause of my drug problem once I finally quit and was quit for good I went straight into a small apartment after the half way found a job and I'm in a 3br 2 bath home I'm paying for I actually was financed because of my job. so i got lucky there really. but home over yr head and a place to sleep isnt the answer its only part of it. I have tried to help with a place since I can help now but they go back to the drugs

@@johnedwards466 I’ve worked with enough homeless charities, homeless people through my job and actually have had homeless family members to know that most homeless people choose to be homeless through various ways. Particularly the long term homeless.
Those who are homeless due to actual unforeseen hardship are usually homeless for a very short time as they actively try to stop being homeless and make use of the safeguard and schemes in place. Most will never even become homeless in the first place because sober brains tend to be able to plan ahead during times of hardship to prevent homelessness
Be careful with that truth you speak, 2021. Most can't handle it. It's far too easy to get the daily mail, read richard littledick and say "bluddy forinners" than understand homelessness. Cracking down on drug dealers would be good idea.
Problem is this. They get a council flat and most of the time dealers start a county line / turn it into a drink den, cause grief distress and misery to the residents that sometimes have lived there for years n years. Its not fair - and its not nice to have your peace messed up by junkies. DO A DOCUMENTARY ON THE PEOPLE ( SOME HAVE BAD ILNESSES THAT FORCE THEM INTO SOCIAL HOUSING) THAT HAVE SUFFERD FROM JUNKIES LIVING NEXT TO THEM WITH NO SAY IN THE MATTER.

Every drug addict I’ve ever known to be put into social housing just ends up with it being a drug den- don’t pay rent, leave the property uninhabitable (human faeces, needles etc). Make it a living hell for the communities they are placed in. And then because the government as made evictions from council houses so difficult it can take years of someone not paying their rent to remove them!

I was homeless for a time, i spent one night on the streets and I don't know how anyone copes. One night almost destroyed me, I found temporary accommodation in the end. No way I could have spent any more nights on the streets scared, not knowing who I might encounter.

As someone who was homeless for 2 years at 19 to 21 years old, I really do understand how they must feel. Sleeping in my car and night shelters that don't even stay open all year round, hotels that can only do so much for so much time. You get involved in the wrong crowds because you're vulnerable. Commit crime to eat or drink. Wanting to be arrested so you can just have a roof over your head for the night. I would not wish this upon my worst enemy. Especially as a woman too. It is utterly disgusting that the government just aren't targeting situations like this but instead spending their money on useless things. This country needs to get its priorities straight like funding the councils, so they have more options to help vulnerable people like this

Just came back from a visit to Louisville, KY. I was shocked to see so many homeless under the bridges in tents with evidence of drug use in the open & trash everywhere. So sad. It's a different city from pre covid yrs.

One of the main issues at shelters and something that nobody wishes to talk about is the culture clash between the homeless British and the migrants
Often migrants are in family groups and small groups of friends, many if not most British homeless are on their own and often targeted and feel very outnumbered
This is a good documentary but as usual, steers very far away from this topic, until we can have an honest calm discussion about this the issue will never be properly addressed

Reality there should be no hungry or homeless people most of us don't realise how simple it is to end up in that situation through violence loss of earnings and to many other reasons but unfortunately the majority of people through whatever reason don't take time to talk to or try and help these people and the comfortable wel of just generally don't want to know its the western world syndrome of im all right have been to many countries and trust me the poorer people take care of each other and share what little they have but admittedly they are not taking drugs it would be good to see more people just stopping to talk and you would be surprised the difference it could make

I feel these people’s pain. I wish them the best. No one in my opinion deserves to live that kind of lifestyle.

Next time I’m in Manchester and I see the homeless sleeping in the sidewalks, I will wake them up and say, “You’re acknowledged; Go back to sleep.” Why is it’s the public’s responsibility to acknowledge a homeless person who is wanting money from me?

Chris, it's not just that there are 'wrongdoings', but as I said in my comment, it's the loss of control in our own lives, (I'm homeless), over time we will have built up a routine,we will have established our 'patch' and, being taken out of the cycle of things for the sake of a bed and a shower sometimes isn't what we need or want.
Our ability to live our own lives without being told what time we must be up, or back inside, when we can eat, having to eat what we are given, someone dictating to us, that is stripping us of our own self worth, and, add to this the fact that there may well be others that would prey on us, threaten and bully or steal our possessions, well, it makes you wonder if it is worth it.
Most times, shelter isn't long term, so do you give up your freedom for a few days of what? Basic food, a shower, if you are lucky and a bed that someone else has slept in?
Ok, I'm lucky, I live out of town, so my homelessness is more like an extended camping holiday and, the day that I understood what was happening, I decided to embrace the challenge rather than let it define me. All the same, at times it has been hard
Up until June this year I had almost achieved my goal, I had been raising and training a bull to become my horse so that I could be mobile,then, after it was stolen (a long story) I am back at square one, needing to get another animal, one that it had taken me years to achieve previously and one that puts me back another four or five years unless I am lucky enough to be able to raise the money needed.
I could curse the world, but it won't change anything, so, I just add it to my list of challenges and prepare for the coming winter in a static camp.
But this isn't about me. The authorities need too understand what homeless people need, and, instead of wasting resources trying to hide or remove the problem, they should do something pro-active.

Some homeless people spent that much time on the streets they cannot adapt to live in a property. they are under too much pressure because the last thing you want when you've got an illness is more pressure of having a property what I also don't understand is why do we find hotels for people that come here from other countries yet we can't find a place for our own

Those 2 only one was a Mancunian. You can see these 2 were beyond help. Some people don't want to be helped, its a real shame but true.
Everyone can be helped Mike. It’s just about patience, time & the correct help. Oh and of course, funding.

The housing affordability crisis is the real issue. If homes weren't so ridiculously and artificially overpriced then people wouldn't need much money to live.
Solutions:
1. Massive rent control and regulations on the realestate industry.
2. Huge taxation on empty properties and unused land to fund housing benefit for those who need it.
3. Ban foreign realestate speculation.
4. Limit now many homes someone can own.
5. Build more public housing with rents proportionate to income.
Homes shouldn't be a mere commodity or an investment, or used for money laundering and tax avoidance.

Should be more programs like this I was homeless in Lincolnshire and I fell through every little loophole and couldn't be rehoused or anything homeless in the UK is a lot worse than people think nice one for doing this and to anyone who reads this comment if passing someone on the streets just spend 5 minutes asking how they are or even say hello it goes further than you think 🤔

I’m from Toronto🇨🇦, and have worked with with marginalized ppl for over 20 yrs
( survivors of abuse, ppl with mental health and or addiction and ppl who are chronically homeless)
It’s bad here too and in all the USA cities I’ve visited in the last 10 yrs
We can’t depend on the government to fix this , the problems are to BIG!!!

So true, just recently helped a homeless guy. My son was with me, I want my toddler to look down and see if other humans around need help rather look up and just past by like they don't exist. Bless them all no one deserves such life.

When I was young Squatting was Legal in the UK and we had 'Squatters Rights,' We would fix up abandoned houses, which kept rats and mice away from neighbours properties. We would get the gas and electric turned on and paid the bills. We painted them inside , none of us took drugs - we didn't even drink. But we did WORK And paid our Taxes. Honestly this is the answer , as Councils can't cope with the amount of homeslessness and the Government couldn't care less about building more low - rent places to live. Were we wrong to turn abandoned houses , left to rot, to turn them into very nice living accomdation , paid for with our own money ? In my opimion, we need to make Squatting of derelict houses Legal again.
I really feel bad for the people who became homeless but a lot brought on themselves to get on in life you have to work earn money to improve your lifestyle not spending on drink and drugs and expect to provided for homeless people lay on the street Asking that people like me and you work hard for we pay our taxes to keep the economy going so why shouldn't they .....what a lot of them need is a place to live help to get jobs and take their place back in society not handouts that's not helping its enabling

I was homeless many times. It's no joke. I steer away from alcohol and drugs though when in such situations. Back on my feet again.
Not everyone that is living on the streets is on drugs.

For some people, if they didn't have bad luck they'd have no luck, so for those who are struck now by illness, bereavement and fall onto the street it is horrible, BUT, way too many homeless are in the position they are because of drink, drugs and a sense of entitlement, thinking their wellbeing is the states problem. I was born very working class and simply put, the person responsible for what happens to us is staring back at us in the mirror! Life is fucking hard but you keep going and self respect should mean you want to get as far as you can in life off your own back, no handouts and no excuses. Just come from watching a documentary about the US and people working multiple jobs and living in their cars, those people I can get behind, but I struggle to relate in any way to those who want to be strung out on drink/drugs.

This is pathetic . I know everyone in Britain would give money to get our homeless indoors. It's not right on any level for someone to sleep on the street with problems or not. Can someone start a go fund me for all the homeless in Britain.

The issue isn’t money.
Pretty much everyone interviewed was on drugs or alcohol. If you give them more money they will just buy more drugs and alcohol- possibly killing them.
Giving homeless people money is more likely to cause their death then actually help.
The government didn’t put drugs in your veins, stop being silly, people are homeless for a reason, just ask some ,, homeless people rather be homeless
Even when they are offered housing, they rather stay on the streets,, just let them be

This is true. Those that actually don’t want to be homeless either don’t ever actually end up homeless or if they do they aren’t for very long.

Homelessness has been the bane of human existence sine the beginning of time and will sadly be with us forever. However we can greatly reduce the numbers and that we have failed miserably.
Spent 10 years in and out hostels and all they are is prison extensions I've seen horrendous stabbings deaths they even go into the breakfast room poking multiple holes in a person for whatever the reason all done in front of canteen staff, when it's just the night staff it's free for all time so aye it actually is safer on the streets. Also when a single male is offered a property it is often in some of the worst run down estates no safer either hence you see folk murdered in their own home (especially single males)

Until the hostels understand these are addicts and are not gonna stick to being clean just because you’ve put a roof over there head. It was the same when I was homeless 26yrs ago so times haven’t moved on at all.
only in this day and age a homeless Person has better clobber than a working man LOL ,,, FYI some of these people are not homless u cna make £80-£350 a day sat there

Hostels might not be perfect, but they give the homeless food and shelter and help with individuals various issues. Obviously there will be some residents with mental health issues who might be violent or abusive, but they are dealt with as best they can. Surely it’s better than sleeping outside, esp in winter.

Chronic homelessness is a symptom of addictions and mental health. Housing is only part of the solution. Supportive housing is needed. I’ve seen repeatedly as a copper the same individuals been given housing and ending back on the streets.
I’ve always said to my self if I end up homeless I wouldn’t be able to do it and I’ll end up dead or in jail for the rest of my life

No they didn't do whats needed which is social housing and flats , and like a rough sleeper said here wouldn't go in a hostel these can be dangerous places I knew someone that worked in one ,nobodies got a chance till they build proper amounts of social housing ,heal the harm Thatcher did to this country and people .

@@mickharrison9004 I also think there were some great stores from everyone I'm, O know hostels aren't ideal for everyone but some people saw huge changes to their lives which was a silver lining of covid.

Go to LA or Vancouver to see real homeless hell. A bit of a cake walk in the UK in comparison.
Here's a story, in LA, they rent out a tent for $50 a month in the homeless area-- by "they", I mean other homeless, not charity workers. An old guy I knew rented it and was given a blanket. Some woman came and tried to rob the blanket. The old guy didn't let her take it, so she tried to set fire to him and the tent. He left.
This imho is unacceptible in a country with such cold damp weather
