I grew up in a house without heating or hot water, and that's something I hope not many people who read this share. It's absolute misery to wake up in January with ice on the inside of your bedroom window, wash in a cold bath with a kettle and a few pans of hot water and dry yourself in front of a tiny shitty gas fire. That was the only heating we had and while it more or less took the chill out of the front room the rest of the house was still icy cold. No one should live like that.

They put me with my father who was a drunk we had no hot water no heating because it didnt work my bedroom window never shut there was never any food in the house the only time I got a proper hot meal was when every Tuesday my social worker would pick me up and take me to McDonald's, my father owned a off licence it was robbed everyday because my dad would pass out drunk and they knew it eventually it went bust. At 14 I decided I had enough I went to work cleaning cars earning £100 a week I clothed myself bought my own uniform and pens and pencils i then lied about my age to work for a company that packed clothers for matiland earning 300 pound cash in hand no questions asked in all the summer hoildays I saved all my money moved out to a bed sit at 16 then a flat and now a have my own house a son and partner I work a good job and moved 300 miles away from were I used live the government was suppose to be looking after me being on a care order I got no support and lived in poverty .

But did they do everything society expects them to do? Did they take advantage of their free education and put in an effort to complete all offered courses to the best of their abilities? Did they go on to learn a marketable skill? Did they make certain they could feed, house and clothe a child on their own before they had one? Did they have a plan to provide for themselves and their families in the long term? These are just a few of the things that “society” expects of its members. If they failed to do any of them, it’s no one’s fault but their own. The “system” works just fine for the majority of people. If it’s not working for you, then you need to ask yourself why. Is it society’s failure, or is it yours? Denying the truth doesn’t make it any less a reality.

This documentary also points out that many people in work are very poor!

It’s expensive to be poor. I’m watching this remembering what it was like growing up in the UK.. I’m an expat. Living in California. We escaped England’s poverty. We grew up in the London Over-Spill. Lumbertubs. Northampton. The British government should help encourage the entrepreneurial spirit. Over regulation makes it extremely difficult to fathom being a business owner. My dad opened a shop in the 80’s. Only for it to shut down because he forgot to file a piece of paperwork. The local council fined him out of business and seized the business. We didn’t make a penny. The county council had the audacity to send over Balifs to pick up items from our house. They didn’t take anything. There was nothing worth them taking. We were poor. Thankfully, my grandmother in the USA rallied the family and got the funds to send us to America. I find that people in the UK are job dependent. Not Independent.

When I was at school there was the home economics and family planning, you got your job, where either married or in a relationship, you rented or bought suitable accomodation and then you thought about starting a family. Now people don't do this, it's child after child, mum lives in one house with the kids dad lives somewhere else, two social homes for one "family" and people wonder why theres a housing crisis.

Sorry but people with mold really need to learn how to treat mold, I used to get mold in a flat I rented privately it wasn't severe but the landlord told me it had been before I'd moved in and had been removed and treated. I read up about mold and realised me drying clothes indoors on radiators was the worst thing ever for mold, plus not opening the windows enough, and not heating the house sufficiently I understand heating costs money but ventilation with windows doesn't, and a hot bucket of soapy water with some bleach and a rag doesn't cost anything either (very little cost bleach 50p, scented one will help with the smell of mold) Clean the mold thoroughly as soon as a small amount appears and it will never get to this point. I don't know how anyone could let that child sleep in that moldy room when. Cleaning it off and painting over it is an option, use. Mold resistant paint and yes eventually it may come back but then clean it again straight away. The flat I'm in now gets moldy in winter but I mean slight mold around the windows and I clean it off straight away don't just leave mold people it's bad for you and your family!!!

I think you will find this is many first world countries. People think they are poor simply because they cannot spend money how they wish. I am technically "poverty" according to the government of the U.S. based on what my husband makes, but we have more than many people. We do not go hungry, because we do not have expensive tastes and always have basics in the house (potatoes, rice, milk, butter, eggs). We go a step further and grow food on our front porch so we have fresh food. I honestly get that you cannot do that in certain places, but that isn't poverty. Going without food is poverty. Living in a dirt home with no toilet is poverty. Having a cell phone, a television, a game system, or using the internet is not signs of poverty. It is a sign that you want more and more and are not happy until you have it.

Yet you can see by the comments of some here that they think it can't happen to them, it can and its going to because without a 'working class' those who now think they're middle class are next on the list to be thinned out, so its coming folks and no-one is there to help.

I grew up in a lower middle class family, without a lot of money, but I never considered my family to be impoverished. I agree with a lot of the program, but I also think that their definition of poverty is a little overboard. Not having a dishwasher means you are impoverished? Thats a bit ridiculous. Also, we grew up almost entirely with second hand clothing, and yet new clothing is on the list as a necessity. I also don't think television, a mobile phone (unless its necessary for a job) or even the internet/computer as a necessity, since you can usually use a computer at your local library, or at school. My mom cut our hair as a kid, and we sometimes had to make our own curtains and things. I believe in basics like warmth, decent clothing (which can be second hand), food, etc. but it sounds a bit entitled to say that television, new clothing, a week's vacation, and a dishwasher are a necessity. They are nice, but not a necessity.

A phone and internet and a computer are 100% a necessity. You need a phone to communicate with the outside world and for people to know you're safe. Kids need internet and a computer to do their homework, in the same way parents need it for work or for job hunting. Clothes are obviously a necessity because how are you meant to dress yourself? You're not working class so you're clearly too far removed from our reality.

You need a phone and a computer and the internet to communicate with most companies these days. They don't except walk in customers now. Alot of local branches have closed down and they run out of call centers. You need to apply for most jobs now on line with a CV. You can't apply over the phone. In fact you can't do much at all to improve your situation without them. I classify them a necessity.

They did that to poor blacks back in the sixties and seventies (in the US). A single mother with children qualified for benefits while a family with a father present did not, leading to black fathers moving away from their families for financial reasons. The end result was the almost complete destruction of the black family unit, the consequences of which are still negatively effecting the black community as a whole.

garybsg You say it rewards hard work? No. Carers are paid peanuts. And before you say get a better job there is a real need for more carers and vulnerable people are now going without help. 400 libraries closed down around Britain and mental health services have been cut to the point that there's no help for many. The system is designed to keep people down.

It would have been better if we hadn't kept letting people into the country.. British welfare system is on its knees and won't get any better as we keep letting more in as Britain is over populated now .. We are a very small island and there is just not enough money and space, so if things don't change very soon there is no hope for Britain and things will just get worse..

Single mum with 4 kids and none of the dads are paying a thing.. 🙄 Irresponsible breeding is lucrative in the UK
Unemployed couple with 4 sons.. why doesn't one of them move to find work? That's why we have so many people coming to our country..to work and earn for family back home. I used to work on a ship and all the crew were from Asia and they were thankful for a job to send money back home. We just expect everything to come to us here.

I had the good fortune to work with two qualified chefs, working all their lives , being able to stop work, and pick it back up when ever they chose or felt like they needed a break, as the split shifts are very hard, and anti social, but crucially they both had employment no matter what the economic climate, or Government of the time .
One left home at 17, travelled from Cornwall to Kent to live in, and learn his trade from the very bottom.
He sold his mini car on arrival, so he had some money for anything he may need immediately, uniform , knives etc.
He had provided for himself, by making this decision, suitable accommodation, plus the freshest food , and some money at the end of each week, whilst still learning a skill, and gaining experience.
In his time, he travelled around the World 3 times, during his times off work.
He had so many tips on how to achieve this,
like walking into a hire car office in Australia, and volunteering to drive an auto sleeper back to its original depot on the other side of the continent, and get paid €12 a day for doing it.He has lived.
The other man, was even higher skilled, it became his passion, he too travels the World, and is rich both in money and experience. It is a privilege to have worked with them.

Poor little children ,one would almost think that one was in a third world country absolutly appalling. !!! shame on you Britain.
