10 STUNNING Upright Philodendron Varieties | Self-Heading Philodendron | Terrestrial Philodendron

  • Aloha! Join me as we take a look at 10 gorgeous upright Philodendron varieties! These plants are all terrestrial Philodendron and are what is known scientifically as self-heading Philodendron. Unlike the Philodendron we looked at in my Climber vs Crawlers video, these are non-vining Philodendron varieties meaning that these Philodendron are bushy in appearance and take up even more horizontal space than the crawlers. But that also makes them serious show stoppers and excellent plant centerpieces for a room!

    The first thing I learned in my plant journey many many moons ago was that plants eventually mature! I learned this lesson with a Monstera large form that is now 30 years old and has claimed a good portion of a room we once referred to as our reading room but currently is referred to as the Monstera room! LOL

    I love my Philodendron Prince of Orange. And, typical of me (being behind in the trends!) I've only just got myself a Philodendron birkin 😂 It took me a while to fall in love with the birkin, but I'm looking forward to watching it grow. Thank you for this wonderful video. I enjoyed it very much.

    Thank you so much for this list. Sadly when you purchase plants many will just say philodendron without name. Serenity Collection includes Imperial Red dating back 6 years. Amor eterno. Also Imperial Green, Moonlight, Prince of Orange, Black Cardinal. Heartache when comes the time too big. Even if you only have one year together, it's worth the adventure.

      @@AlohaPlantLife In the intro you mention not covering them because they aren't the same growth habits as the philodendrons you're covering here. Thanks for the link and watching now! Took me a while to notice and mitigate a disease among my all my philodendron types (including a xanadu), so want to give them all the best chances possible.

    Hi Drea. I think that I have the Moonlight (I bought it with no name on it). But I can’t seem to keep it happy, probably it’s the watering I can’t seem to get right. The leaves roll inwards, get limp, and dies. Do you have any tips? I have both Pink Princess, Birkin and (I think) Prince of Orange and I’m not struggling with those varieties.

    • @AlohaPlantLife
      @AlohaPlantLife  6 месяцев назад

      Care should be pretty much identical to the prince of orange so definitely odd that it’s giving you trouble. Have you checked to make sure the roots are still healthy?

      Those are two arborescent types that I mentioned at the start of the video have been moved from the philodendron genus to the thaumatophyllum genus. I think I’m going to do a future video just on those that are now in thaumatophyllum since the growth pattern is quite different. I love my thaumatophyllum hope I own!💚

    I was wondering what is the best way to propagate these self-heders.

    • @AlohaPlantLife
      @AlohaPlantLife  5 месяцев назад +1

      Honestly, they can be a bit tricky. Most of them grow so tightly together in terms of their nodes that it can be really hard to get in there and successfully cut between nodes. But that’s how you do it. Once you’ve cut between a node just take that part of the plant and you cut off and either water propagate it or go direct to soil. I personally find water easier but that’s just me.💚

      I actually decided to put a tiny moss-pole behind it, (made out of strip of plastic sheet,- I sacrificed a placemat, cut a 2-3" strip, bent in semicircle, held with long twisty ties, stuffed with moss. The birkin's roots are attaching to it. I hydrate it every day. I am essentially "air layering" it, though the stem is not cut. Since I "tour" my plants every day, it's no big deal to hydrate daily.
