For anyone who has difficulty bending or leaning over to pick things up, the long "grabber" thingies are not just for people with back pain. They are like next level Laundry Tongs!

Do you have a brand recommendation? Grandma had several over the years that couldn't really pick hardly anything up, but I broke my foot last week, and my only mode of transportation is a stool I'm wheeling around on, but then I'm not able to reach the floor to move stuff out of my way without putting weight on the foot.

@@GoingGreenMomoh gosh so sorry to hear about your foot. I broke mine years ago and it’s quite the process to heal. For the grabber, I just got a random one on Amazon that had decent reviews.

To the person who has overwhelming gift givers in her family: ask for help with classes and leisure activities that otherwise you couldn't necessarily afford. My daughter got dance classes like that for years, along with the shoes and costume as a "wrappable" gift. I couldn't have payed for them, but granny was delighted. And we didn't have an excess of unwanted toys in her small bedroom. I made sure to regularly tell my daughter that her classes were granny's gift, and she knows and appreciates that. Much better long term memories than a cluttered bedroom would be.
Similar solutions can be found for adults. Stuff you would like to do, but can't, either financially, or for lack of a babysitter, or... Whatever.

To JD Murph, about the have full trash bags: I use smaller bags when I know I'm likely to get interrupted, or just have a little bit of time. Don't know about US trash bag sizes, but I have 30 litre bags that are really quite easy to fill. I have 100 litre bags for when I'm going for some serious decluttering and know I'll probably not be interrupted. Sometimes, when I'm really only filling some awkward pause, I just look for any trash can that's already half full. I fill it up, and then take out the trash and put in a new liner.

I agree, it is complex. At the same time, it is also the way most of us deal with procrastic clutter. I'm a cricket (from the Clutterbug channel by Cas), so I have beautiful piles of clutter at home. Organizing piles was my thing, until I came across Dana's channel 2 years ago, which has helped me a lot, especially with the concept of decluttering at the speed of life. I couldn't stop my routine in order to declutter, I had to do it on the go.

Another idea for the person overwhelmed by gifts from family and friends - Make a wish list or drop hints for things that are consumable. Some lovely gifts are things like a refill of your favorite lotion or cosmetic, a box with all the ingredients for a family recipe, a case of your favorite beer, a gift card to your favorite restaurant. Things like that.

I’ve been using my decluttering skilks(thank you Dana!)to help my 84 year old mother who can no longer use her basement. We recently decluttered her linen closet and she was pleased with the outcome . But she was really pleased this week when at 11:00 pm she had to change her sheets because of something her cat did. She said it was so nice to find the closet so neat and easy to find exactly the sheets she needed without having to pull everything out and figure out what was what. That was so wonderful to hear. I’m really considering taking your course Dana, because I have reached my clutter threshold and am just itching to help others!

44:31 Where can we see if there are coaches near us?
44:35 I heard that if it’s not an immediate yes, get rid of it. I ended up regretting and then buying a lot of things back again. What would be a better quick-clutter question?

Wow, thank you so much for sharing the math concept, it all makes sense to me now! I've realized I've been mostly clutter shifting and not much is leaving the house.
I'm a mathematician, but for some reason, I've never thought of my house, rooms, closets and drawers as finite containers. Therefore, they can only contain a finite amount of stuff inside of them.
My mind has always said to keep it if I might use it cause there is still space on the next drawer or closet. But I SHOULD be removing something else and taking it OUT of the house instead of putting it somewhere else because otherwise there will be no improvement!

    1. Trash
    2. Duh clutter - an easy donation
    3. Easy stuff - take it there now (if no room, remove something and put it in 1 or 2)
    4. If I needed this where **would** I look for it first and take it there now
    5. 😂 I have no idea what the answer is but just doing first 4 steps is making massive progress in my home and **I have no mess**

      @staciecarrel4492 5 месяцев назад +6

I could be very wrong as I’ve only seen a few of her videos where she discusses step 5, but I think #5 is a two part question for all the random stuff that’s left over after the first 4 that you don’t know what to do with. First: If I needed this item, would I even remember I had it to go look for it? If the answer is no, then get rid of it because if you keep it (and you buy new every time) you will eventually end up with 10 of them. The second part is “If I needed this item does the cost to replace it, and how often I use it make it worth the space it takes up?” If the answer to that is no, then get rid of it because it is not worth keeping. If the answer to both is a yes, then you have to go back to #4 and really figure out where it’s home will be.

      3. Duh Donations
      4. If I was looking for this item, where would I look for it first? That becomes its home and you take it there now. If the answer is I don't know, the 2nd question is Would I even think to look for this item? No, it goes into donate, yes, then you go back to where would I look for this first and take it there now.
      5. Put like with like in the space you are working on and then you can pare down large quantities of duplicates or containerize (think pen cup in a cabinet, not going to a store and buying a bunch of stuff) as needed so that everything is easy to access and get-to-able.

For the person with half full trash bags, if Im just doing small spaces, I grab a grocery bag. We still get plastic bags occasionally, and I figure reusingbis better than just tossing, so I will fill grocery bags with trash and then its more manageable to toss every time, or if it is more recyclable type stuff, I use a paper grocery bag. If I don't happen to have a box for donate, I will use those and then transfer to a box before it goes to the donation bin too. Doesnt happen often that I dont have a box, but Im going through a lot of boxes in the garden right now.

Today I went through for trash from a little of the divorce paperwork from the last few years. I didn’t plan to do it (so I didn’t dwell on it), just picked up a ziploc bag and sat down with the scissors, bin and recycle bin. I went quickly through the receipts and tried not to dwell on the emotional screams in my brain. I stopped when I’d had enough (about 5-10mins) and took a breath quickly putting the papers where they belonged. I didn’t get distracted. No mess method allowed me not to make more work for myself, thanks Dana.

21:23 How would you make your rules accessible to people with mobility challenges? (I have POTS). Can you make this work for people like me?
25:13 Announcement about participating in online conference. "How to Declutter with Limited Time and Without Making a Mess.”
26:19 My husband & I are moving my elderly parents into our home this summer. They haven't moved in 40 years & have a lot of storage/clutter & downsizing stuff is hard. Advice or suggestions?
29:45 I sometimes grab a big black garbage bag, only to fill it a little because life happens. I then find myself w/ a half full trash bag living on my floor. What do you do with supplies in between?
30:52 This may be too specific, but what are your thoughts on Air Fryers? I’m worried about buying a “gadget” that will take up space but it seems like there may be enough benefits to make it worth it.
32:26 I have all your books. I’ve read and love “Giving God The Worst of Me,” which book would you recommend I read next?
33:10 Visiting my aunt across the country in a few weeks-will be helping her to declutter to downsize. Her home is neat and tidy-basement and closets full. What can she do ahead to get ready?
36:16 I have decluttered some clothes that I don’t want or like anymore. However, my mom wants me to keep them in my home for her to wear when she comes to visit me. What are your thoughts? I do have the space to keep them in another closet in the guest room she stays in. But, I feel like it is stuff shifting. She has indicated that she is not going to be able to visit me this year. Should I just store them for an entire year?
38:32 How long did it take you to get your house under control, once you figured out the system you use now? My problem is when I start making progress, life happening stops me from working on clutter.
40:41 I wanted to thank you, Dana. My best friend’s mother passed away and thanks to your method I could help her with cleaning out the flat when she was not only grieving but totally overwhelmed.
41:48 Would love for more folks to join Dana’s crew of Decluttering Coaches. None in my area. I’d pay for help w/ my limitations that only get worse as I get older.
42:29 Where do we see if there are decluttering coaches in our area? I’ve had friends offer to help but that is too embarrassing.
43:34 Sorry if you have answered this before. But, after the all day declutter on Saturday, I realized that I cannot handle those super big storage totes anymore. I was wondering if I should declutter them and buy smaller, more manageable ones that I can handle without help from my husband or son to help me. Thoughts?
44:31 Where can we see if there are coaches near us?
44:35 I heard that if it’s not an immediate yes, get rid of it. I ended up regretting and then buying a lot of things back again. What would be a better quick-clutter question?
46:38 I think I’d like to be a declutter coach, but I’m still in the process of decluttering myself.
49:41 There is no [declutter coach] in Wisconsin.
50:16 help letting go of the “I must sell everything to recoup cash, because I’m poor” mind set?? Especially here in the UK, we’ve new app for selling-I’m still a single parent w/ limited time. Help!!
52:32 Maybe just me but I find myself fixated on areas that have been a mess for years, only to remember, thanks to you they are already done (!). So then I have a hard time shifting to another area.
53:39 After reading some of your books, I’m still not sure what to do with the sentimental items and ancestor photos that I don’t want to necessarily display but I can’t get rid of yet.
55:07 Dana, I would love you to explain your term the “head explosion” here.
56:22 Not a question-but wanted to let you know that I love all your books and am rereading them all again. Sometimes I need a reminder of all the nuggets of knowledge that you have shared with us. Thank you so much! You just get it. Not a lot of people understand the struggle. I feel like I have ADHD, because I need the info given to me all the time or I forget. Hope I’m not the only one who needs to keep rereading these books at times!
57:10 Saturday I ran into two boxes of my Dad’s WWII stuff that will be a big project. How do you approach a box that really needs to be emptied so you can see everything that there is to deal with?

    RE: the aunt question...
As someone who's helped a friend declutter, I highly recommend that the aunt watch Dana's videos and/or read Decluttering at the Speed of Life. It's very helpful if the homeowner and helper are on the same page in terms of decluttering process.

Thanks for the "Go hard on the entryway" comment! I'm decluttering well but stuff is packing up in the entrance. Time to take it all out and get it to donation location and unload. My home entrance is not the donation center.

Thank you! I'm rooting for you to finish strong Erica 🎉 and to become a coach in your area. I'm also rooting for you Kit Kat up in KS. Let's do this. 💪 Just remember our memories are NOT attached to STUFF. So let's not go there. Do we use it? Do we need it? Nope. So then determine if it needs trashed or donated. Sounds easy. 😒 Just have to get started. 🙏

38 mins in... I just realised how I need to redefine couple of areas at home. "Storage in the guest room."
Had it in my head also about stuff shifting, I will used to contain a concept to compartmentalise, different guests needs, e.g. sets of grandchildren/ their parents. (going to keep the toys up there and bring them down when they visit!)
Space for visiting family is the space I have up there.
I Would like to finally now I'm an empty nest. I have a living room purely most of the time working and functioning as a comfortable, relaxing space for the household to currently reside here. Without my living room accommodating toys that are in part-time-use
on a month or bi monthly basis.(as the grandchildren grow out of the age-appropriate toys
I intend to donate good condition toys
    to my local toy library.)

I need to add here from my last comment a few belongings that are useful for "Guest- relatives,"...made their way "temporarily into the hallway cupboard! "
I can free up my hallway cupboard "for the family who reside here to add things we require on a weekly basis"
( as we are entering leaving the home.ideal parking spot gloves /hats /umbrellas/ alternative-shoes on the shelves👍)

For Sarah’s air fryer question- I didn’t care for the air fryer but my son got me a Ninja oven. It air fries, toasts, bakes and more. I love it and it replaces 3 things- toaster. Toaster oven. Air fryer. Very versatile 🥰. My 2 cents. lol

a lot of times I'll go around and just empty the garbage cans in the rest of the house, or change the cat litter early. t gives me a jump ahead on garbage day and then I just put it in the outside bin. May not work for everyone, but thought I'd share.

I'd suggest if you're going to a loved ones home that asking for your help. Besides what you said, would be to ask them to read books, videos or podcasts that would help them get into the declutter mindset. Cause they've kept those items it probably means they might need to nudge their thinking to be ready to let go of things.
