  • My stock Icom 706 MKIIG ran way to hot for my comfort. It would get so hot you almost couldn't touch it after transmitting for awhile. I did this simple little fix over 5 years back and the radio has never gotten that hot again.

I made a simpler cure to my IC-706 radios. Opened up the top and saw that there was a hefty fan to cool the radio. In the same chamber was the internal speaker. The input grill for the fan was in the top plate and the speaker was mounted to the top plate. To help the fan I removed the interal speaker and its mount which left the speaker mount area open in the chamber doubling the intake volume for the cooling fan. In an all day test the IC706 barely got warm. I did not need to modify the fan control wiring. I always run the IC706 on an external speaker so removing the internal one had no effect on my operation and really helped the cooling. Try it and see if it fixes you problem,

Having a continuously running fan on this model is always a good idea because the Icom 706 in any variety seems to run a bit warm even in receive-only. There are just some radio models that tend to run "warm" in receive mode, but in the case of the Icom 706 there is a lot going on even when just receiving.
I think this is a very good idea for all 706 users :)

There is also a cheap fan for sale on eBay. It uses the power from the tuner circuit. It will run all the time too, but it is easily removed and u don't have to open the rig. Good job tho. De W5JDA

There is a mod somewhere that has the fan come on in a slow mode when you turn it on and has it running faster when transmitting. ANyone know where that mod is?

although I like this mod and it's a good idea if you put this in your car, mobile, it's going to be draining your battery while your sleeping. If done I would suggest a simple on/off rocker in line with the positive wire to prevent battery drain for mobile use. Of course base use wouldn't matter cause you would just turn off the power supply, but these radios do run very hot.

Greetings dear friend. Could you help me to be in the SET MODE ADJUSTMENT of the Icom IC-706 MKIIG? I don't know the type and configuration of the Plug that is connected to the REMOTE to access its Service Menu.

No. That's beyond my skills. I haven't owned that radio in 10 years.
